COLLEGE OF EDUCATION ALUM N I N OT E S American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Recognizes COE's Best Practices The East Carolina University (ECU) College of Education (COE) will be honored with the Best Practices Award for Collaboration with Community Colleges from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) during their 59th Annual Conference held in New York this February. The centerpiece of this recognition is Wachovia Partnership East (WPE). In 2002, with the support of the Wachovia Foundation, the College of Education established WPE, a university center model consisting of consortium partnerships with 18 community colleges, one private two year college, one community technology center, one Air Force Base, and 34 public school systems within the university’s service region. The 18 community colleges represent onethird of the community colleges in North Carolina and the 34 public school systems represents one-fourth of the public school partners in North Carolina. Wachovia Partnership East is a significant step toward reducing the teacher shortage in eastern North Carolina. This university center model allows students an opportunity to complete their first two years of a four year degree at a North Carolina community college and the final two years through

one of the consortia hub sites. Forty-six students have completed their education degree through this partnership. Three geographically based and one Virtual consortia currently have over 230 students enrolled in either Elementary Education or Special Education-General Curriculum. The Virtual Consortium is designed to serve students that transfer from any North Carolina community college by providing the final two years of the four year degree through online delivery. Students at the other consortia sites receive the final two years of the four year degree through face to face instruction on the hub site community college campus, through online delivery, or blended methods including tele-conferencing. A fourth geographically based hub site will begin serving students in 2008. In addition to increased degree access, this opportunity is more affordable for students since it is a distance education program and there are scholarship …continued on page 8

NCATE Reaccredits College of Education A NCATE/SDPI (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) and (State Department of Public Instruction) accreditation team visited The College of Education in February to examine our professional education programs. The College met NCATE’s six professional development standards and was approved for national accreditation. “Our success is due to the wonderful collaboration within the university and with our external partners.” said Dr. Vivian Covington, Director of Teacher Education.   NCATE helps establish high quality teacher preparation programs through the process of professional accreditation. There are six NCATE standards for professional development schools. These standards were established to support improvement in schools and universities. They include: Standard 1: Candidate Knowledge, Skills and Dispositions; Standard 2: Assessment System and Unit Evaluation; Standard 3: Field Experiences and Clinical Practice; Standard 4: Diversity; Standard 5: Faculty Qualifications, Performance and Development; Standard 6: Unit Governance and Resources. ECU’s professional education programs passed all 6 of these standards. In addition to meeting the six NCATE professional development standards, the

Message from the Dean Dear Alumni, What a year! The articles in this alumni newsletter remind me of why we are proud about the College of Education and the exciting things taking place. There is so much to tell. I encourage you to read this newsletter and to visit our website at www.coe.ecu.edu to keep up-to-date with College of Education news and events. As many of you have heard, the College of Education changed leadership this past summer. In July, Dr. Marilyn Sheerer left the College to serve East Carolina as Vice Chancellor for Student Life. A national search for a new dean is underway. Although, our College’s leadership has changed, our momentum has not been altered. As you will see in this year’s edition of Education Notes, we continue to have exciting information to share about our ongoing initiatives and programs. This fall, we welcomed the first nine Freshman Maynard Scholars to campus.  The Maynard Scholarships were established thanks to the generosity of ECU alumni James and Connie Maynard.  Based on the Teaching Fellows Scholarship Program, Maynard Scholars must work for four years in one of 40 counties in eastern North Carolina to repay the award.  They will participate along with the Teaching Fellows in all activities, committees, seminars with the exception of state-sponsored programs.  The College also introduced two additional opportunities this fall for students to earn a teaching degree through Wachovia Partnership East (WPE). WPE opened a new hub site location known as the Northeast Consortium housed at Beaufort County Community College (BCCC) and a Virtual Consortium housed at Pitt Community College (PCC). Elementary education classes will be taught by ECU faculty at BCCC, online, or through blended delivery models utilizing tele-conferencing beginning in August 2008. Students interested in special education-general curriculum and middle grades education will be able to participate in the WPE Virtual Consortium at PCC. In addition, Project STEPP (Supporting Transition and Education through Planning and Partnerships) welcomed its first students to ECU this fall. Project STEPP is a collaborative program that partners ECU’s College of Education with other colleges and schools on campus, area high schools, and community resources. This partnership offers comprehensive academic, social, and lifeskills to a select number of students with significant learning disabilities who show potential to succeed in college. Students in the program are given help transitioning into college life and as they approach graduation they are assisted through real-world internship experiences. As you can see, the College of Education continues to extend our programs and initiatives to prepare the very best professional educators for our State. We have a strong reputation for developing programs and partnerships with businesses and our communities to better prepare our students for the classroom. In order to continue making opportunities available to students on campus and in rural areas through distance education we need your continued support. As alumni, your contributions to the College of Education help us meet the growing demand for educators. Lifelong Dream Realized Through Wachovia Partnership East A partnership between East Carolina University’s College of Education and local community colleges was established four years ago to alleviate teacher shortage in eastern North Carolina. This partnership now known as Wachovia Partnership East (WPE) enables students desiring to become educators the opportunity to earn their degree close to home. WPE currently offers four-year degrees in Elementary Education or Special Education. Students complete their first two years at their local community colleges and continue their remaining two years through ECU at one of the three hub sites (Craven Community College, Wayne Community College, and Nash Community College). ECU faculty travel to teach at each of the three hub sites and some courses are available online. WPE students are provided course work materials online or delivered directly to their door. In August 2002, sixteen graduates started out as teacher education candidates enrolled in a new College of Education initiative at Craven Community College known as Partnership East. The partnership expanded and now includes 18 community colleges, one private college, a U.S. Air Force Base, and 29 public school partners across three hub sites located at Craven Community College, Wayne Community College and the Rocky Mount campus of Edgecombe Community College. There are now 214 students in 13 cohorts/groups. Interest in the model and the potential to impact the rural communities of eastern North Carolina led to financial support and a name change. In March 2004 the Wachovia Corporation made a gift of $1.25 million; the majority of the gift goes directly to student scholarships. In addition to Wachovia’s gift, a federal grant of $800,000.00 was awarded for the recruitment of special education teachers. The Golden Leaf Educational Consortium also provided funds for the establishment of Teacher Resource Centers and other local groups have created scholarships designed specifically for WPE students.

The first cohort graduated in December 2005. Many of the graduates from the first cohort have already spent time teaching. One of these students is Jodi Randall, a 5th grade teacher at Graham Barden Elementary School in Craven County. WPE helped her achieve her lifelong dream. “I have wanted to teach for as long as I can remember.” Jodi is married with Dr. John Swope (right) and BCCC President, Dr. David McLawhorn (left), sign new WPE hubsite agreement. two children ages 14 and 11. WPE also gave me more time to work, be with my family, and I was able to study at home. The three years went by really fast.” Jodi says going back to college was a family event. Her children and husband saw how hard she worked and supported her along they way. “I think I only slept five hours a night for three years. I did my homework every night after everyone went to bed. I was dedicated to achieving my dream of becoming a teacher.” Jodi’s husband and children attended the College of Education’s Graduate Recognition Ceremony at ECU to watch Jodi take her walk across the stage in December 2005. She says her children saw how her hard work and dedication paid off. Jodi laughs saying, “I tell them get your education the easy way, before you get married.” Jodi appreciates her career more because she had to work hard for it. “I look forward to being in the classroom everyday. I know I am doing what I am meant to do. Wachovia Partnership East is invaluable to adult learners whether you are single and

Wachovia Partnership East Expands In response to the need for more teachers, East Carolina University College of Education is offering two additional ways for students to earn a teaching degree through Wachovia Partnership East (WPE). WPE is opening a new hub site location known as the Northeast Consortium and offering degree opportunities online through a Virtual Consortium. WPE is designed to allow students to complete their general education course work at one of the partnering community colleges and then transfer into the ECU program to complete their junior and senior years of the teaching degree in elementary education, special education – general curriculum, or middle grades education with concentrations in mathematics and science concentrations. WPE’s Northeast Consortium hub site is located at Beaufort County Community College. Elementary education classes will be taught by ECU faculty via face to face

New Teacher Support Network Goes Live The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education at East Carolina University is pleased to announce the New Teacher Support Network (NTSN). NTSN is an innovative website designed to offer support and resources for initially licensed teachers in the Latham Clinical Schools Network. The Latham Clinical Schools Network is a partnership between East Carolina University and 26 school districts in eastern North Carolina.  The school systems include: Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Edgecombe, Greene, Halifax, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash/Rocky Mount, Onslow, Pamlico, Pitt, Wayne and Wilson. Within the network, there are approximately 285 schools with 167,000 students and over 1,500 trained clinical teachers who participate in partnership efforts.  The NTSN offers support in two ways. One area of support includes an external resources section which is a list of links to websites outside ECU that may be of interest and help to new teachers. These sites include resources on lesson planning, classroom management, motivation, and a host of other issues pertinent to education and to new teachers in particular. Perhaps the most exciting component of the website is the Ask-an-Expert page. At this page, new teachers may submit a question to an expert at ECU. For a complete list of areas of expertise available, please visit the website at http://www.ecu.edu/cs-educ/ntsn/Index. cfm. Alternately, this site can be located by going to the College of Education homepage and scrolling down to the Resources section. You will see the New Teacher Support Network listed there. ■

Exchange Agreement Signed with Japan A Japanese delegation visited three North Carolina universities July 2-6, 2006. The visit provided the delegation an opportunity to tour each institution and meet faculty and administration before signing the Japan – United States Sister University Academic Exchange Accord. The accord is among three University Consortium in Japan (Osaka Kyoiku University, Hiroshima University, and Naruto Kyoiku University) and three University Consortium in the United States (East Carolina University, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and Western Carolina University). On July 7th, all six universities were present for the signing of the formal agreement at the Center for School Leadership on the University of North Carolina’s campus. The purpose of the accord is to promote friendship, mutual understanding, scholarship and educational cooperation. “ECU’s College of Education has had many faculty, student, and public school exchanges between Japan and North Carolina. However, this agreement allows for greater opportunities for exchange in the future.” says Dr.

Project STEPP Increases College Access Project STEPP is a collaborative program that partners a variety of East Carolina University’s colleges and campus resources with area high schools, and community opportunities.  The program offers comprehensive academic, social, and life-skills

All six universities agreed to facilitate the exchange of qualified teachers and students, the exchange of research publications and publications, and the exchange in cultural activities. The Japan – United States Sister University Academic Exchange Accord became effective on July 7, 2006 and remains effective for three years. The continuation of the agreement will be renewed automatically for the next three years unless either side gives notice a year in advance. ■

Teaching Fellows and Maynard Scholars on the Move The 2006-2007 academic year started off with a boom (pirate lingo for “bang”). We welcomed 57 Teaching Fellows and nine Maynard Scholars for a freshmen class high of 66. Their semester started with the annual trek to the Eastern 4-H Conference Center for team building exercises and a ropes course. The new additions to our office this year are the Maynard Scholars. James Maynard, co-founder of Golden Corral Restaurants, and wife Connie donated $1 million to the College of Education. Their request was for the funds to be used as scholarships for students in eastern North Carolina. Additionally, the scholarship was to be designed just as the N.C. Teaching Fellows Scholarship was. With the exception of the first year which has nine students, ECU will welcome ten Maynard Scholars every year. Maynard Scholars and Teaching Fellows will reside in the same dorm and participate in all activities with the exception of state funded activities. Welcome Maynard Scholars! Speaking of the freshmen residence hall, our freshmen classes now reside in Umstead Hall along with Honors, EC Scholars and International Students. This new living and learning community provides many opportunities for all students to interact in a culturally enriched environment. Collaborative STEM Project Supports Teachers Year-Round The Center for Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education (CSMTE) offers year-round support for teachers and schools. Although summer is the busy time for faceto-face workshops and institutes, many of those efforts extend into the school year. On-line courses are particularly valuable in that respect. A menu of offerings is available on the Center website (www.coe.ecu. edu/csmte) and additional on-line offerings in science, mathematics, and technology are in constant development. The CSMTE is a member of the NC Mathematics and Science Education Network and collaborates with its 10 sister Centers on statewide programs, often in collaboration with the NC Department of Public Instruction. Current statewide projects include: Advanced Functions and

The Center for Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education (CSMTE) announces the introduction of the North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network (NC-MSEN) Pre-College Program at ECU. This university initiative is an exciting new outreach effort targeting students in grades 6-12. The official kick-off for the Pre-College Program was conducted at the Center for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education Advisory Council meeting held October 10, 2006. As a component of NC-MSEN, the PreCollege Program is designed to broaden the pool of students preparing to pursue college majors and careers in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology. The NCMSEN Pre-College Program, in existence on some campuses since 1986, is funded by the UNC General Administration. With the addition of new programs this year at ECU and Western Carolina University, there are currently nine Pre-College sites including NC State University; UNC Chapel Hill; UNC Charlotte; Elizabeth City State University; Fayetteville State University; Winston-Salem State University; and a joint program between NC A&T State University and UNC-Greensboro.

In order to achieve its primary purpose, the NC-MSEN Pre-College Program offers rigorous science and mathematics-based academic enrichment classes to traditionally underserved students in grades 6-12. These activities are integrated into the core curriculum and include career awareness programs, leadership training, academic advising and tutoring, academic competitions, and laboratory experiences in mathematics, science, and technology. Over the past several years of the PreCollege Program’s existence, it has amassed a significant collection of data from its participants. Approximately 98% of the program’s graduates enroll in college or university. Of those, 85% pursue majors and careers in science, mathematics, technology, or engineering. During their high school years, the African-American Pre-College students score significantly higher on end-of-course tests than other African-American students in North Carolina’s schools, an important achievement in the statewide effort to close the achievement gap. In general, graduates of the NC-MSEN Pre-College Program attend North Carolina colleges and universities and choose careers within the state. Students who move through the Pre-College program into science, mathematics, engineering, and technology majors and careers will fill an enormous need generated by a growing high-tech industrial base in eastern North Carolina. Mentors from those industries will play important roles in the program as they educate students about opportunities and encourage them in their academic endeavors.

A $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation has been awarded to East Carolina University in support a three-year program called TechMath to link businesses and higher education with underserved high school students and their teachers in rural northeastern North Carolina. TechMath supports teacher preparation and student workforce development through experiences with real-world science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) business problems. Typical classroom instruction provides students with knowledge and skills in mathematics and information technology, but often does not provide students with sufficient applications linked to the workforce, nor with information about the range of STEM career options available. TechMath is designed to bridge this gap. Built on the premise that secondary students want to learn material that will empower them for higher education and the workforce, TechMath will produce

sions included a review of the new North Carolina School Executive Standards and a summary of the North Carolina Report on Quality School Leaders. Additionally, during 2006-07, faculty will provide coaching and support for a pilot group of our graduates who are new principals. These selected new principals will be visited regularly by LEED faculty who will assist them in their first year’s challenges. In the spring, the department has planned a series of drive-in conferences and other opportunities to address the needs of our graduates across the region. We continue to provide a variety of preparation programs for school leaders at the masters, educational specialist, and doctoral levels and have both first year and second year cohorts in the Principal Fellows Program. More than 80 MSA students are engaged in the full-time, year-long, internship in 18 districts. While we continue to have a large number of MSA students completing their coursework on campus, we have several cohorts of MSA students in locations throughout the region. We continue to rotate the locations of these cohorts to serve school systems throughout the region. Our online EDS program allows practicing school leaders the opportunity to earn Level II licensure without attending classes on campus. While students often note that they miss the face-to-face contact with professors and other students, they appreciate the flexibility as well as the opportunity to use the course activities to strengthen their performance as school leaders. We are also excited about the contributions made by

Department of Counselor and Adult Education Update The Department of Counselor & Adult Education supports the continuing professional development of both graduates and current students through a variety of programs offered throughout the academic year. This fall, two conferences were co-sponsored by the department and coordinated by departmental faculty.   On November 3, 2006, the COAD Department Adult Education faculty hosted the 11th Annual Adult Education Research & Practice Colloquium, focused this year on Human Resource Management, Organizational Development, and Training. The Colloquium workshop featured three recognized scholars in HRD/OD and training – Dr. Maria Cseh, of George Washington University, Dr. Steven W. Schmidt (COAD), and Dr. C. Steve Duncan (ECU Office of Military Programs). Following the panel presentations by these three faculty, Adult Education graduate students led participants in roundtable discussions on a variety of issues related to HRD/OD and training. Dr. Cseh delivered the luncheon keynote address. The workshop was be coordinated by Dr. Steven W. Schmidt and co-sponsored by the Department of Counselor & Adult Education and the Eastern NC Chapter of the American Society for Training & Development. The November 3rd workshop was held in Mendenhall Student Center.   On Friday, September 15, 2006, the North Carolina Association for Assessment in Counseling Conference was held at the Brownstone Hotel in Raleigh. This conference was coordinated by Dr. Joseph Ciechalski, President of the NC Association for Assessment in Counseling, and featured Dr. Lou Fabrizio, Director of Accountability Services, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. The title of the workshop was, “Issues in North

Carolina Testing and Accountability.’” Dr. Fabrizio oversees the ABCs accountability program and the statewide testing program and serves as the Chair of the National Standing Task Force on Assessment of the Council of Chief State School Officers’ (CCSSO) Education Information Management Advisory Consortium. Drs. James W. Pinkney and Florence Weaver assisted Dr. Joseph C. Ciechalski in coordinating this workshop. School counselors attending this conference were provided with up-to-date information about current classroom testing issues in North Carolina and enjoyed ample opportunity to dialogue with Dr. Fabrizio and department faculty about state testing and other testing issues. ■

MLS Program Achieves 1st Step in ALA Accreditation The Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology (LSIT) began the application process for ALA (American Library Association) accreditation for the

Master of Library Science (MLS) in 2005 in order to meet student and employer requirements for an ALA-accredited degree. The application process to receive ALA accreditation consists of three parts: precandidacy, candidacy, and accreditation and usually takes several years to complete successfully. Based on a thorough self-study of the MLS program presented to the ALA Committee on Accreditation (COA) in March 2006, the program was granted precandidacy status toward ALA accreditation in April 2006. The next step in the accreditation process is to send an annual progress report on how well the MLS program is meeting the goals and objectives outlined in the pre-candidacy self-study, along with a request for the MLS program to be considered for candidacy status. Once granted candidacy status in early 2007, it will take approximately two years to develop and present a formal program presentation to ALA COA on the readiness of the MLS program for accreditation approval and host an onsite visit of the ALA COA external review team. If all accreditation process timelines and requirements are successfully met, the LSIT’s MLS program would be granted ALA accreditation sometime in the 2008/09 academic year. According to ALA COA guidelines, graduates from the MLS program within two years prior to LSIT’s gaining full ALA accreditation will be grandfathered in. The Northeast Consortium will serve students from Beaufort County Community College, Martin Community College, RoanokeChowan Community College, and Windows on the World; as well as the local school systems in Beaufort, Bertie, Dare, EdentonChowan, Hertford, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties. Classes for elementary majors will begin at the Northeast Consortium hub site in August 2008. In addition, the WPE Virtual Consortium will enhance the existing partnership by providing this educational opportunity to students across North Carolina.  The goal of WPE will continue to be providing educational opportunities close to home. The WPE Virtual Consortium Coordinator is housed on the campus of Pitt Community College and will serve students that complete their general education coursework at any North Carolina community college. Virtual Consortium classes will begin in January 2007 for special education-general curriculum majors; May 2007 for middle grades math/science education majors; and August 2007 for elementary majors. ■

George Holston, Project Manager, Teleeducation and Visiting Lecturer Office of the Dean and Business Career and Technical Education In January 2006 , Lions Clubs International President’s Certificate of Appreciation was presented by Lions Past International Director Dr. Wing-Kun Tam from Hong Kong, China, to George Holston for his service to the blind and those in need in eastern North Carolina. Holston is currently serving as Lions Vice-District Governor for NC Lions 31-H.  He has received 100 Percent President Award three times while serving as president of the Cape Fear Lions Club (two terms) and the Wrightsville Beach Lions Club.  Holston will serve as District Governor for NC Lions 31-H in 20062007 after being inducted on July 5, 2006 at the Lions International Convention to be held in Boston, Massachusetts.

February 2006 David  Gabbard, Professor Curriculum & Instruction Gabbard was invited to be the keynote speaker at a conference on education and globalization_at the University of Texas – San Antonio on March 30-31, 2006.  The conference borrowed in name from the title of Gabbard’s book: Knowledge and Power in the Global Economy, (Erlbaum, 2000) which he is developing into a second edition with a new subtitle: The Effects of School Reform in a Neoliberal / Neoconservative Age. The day after the keynote, Gabbard plans to lead an afternoon seminar with students in UTSA’s doctoral program in Educational Policy Studies on themes related to the conference. Robin L. Rider, Assistant Professor Mathematics & Science Education On January 6, 2006 and January 9, 2006 Dr. Robin Rider presented at research session entitled Video Conferencing Technology: The Future of Distance Education, International Collaboration, and Professional Development with Michael J. Dr. Harold Griffin, Associate Professor Curriculum & Instruction Dr. Griffin is receiving the Felix S. Barker Award at the North Carolina Council for Exceptional Children Conference in March 2006.  This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated long-term leadership and significant lifetime contributions to the field of special education in North Carolina. Jane C. Manner, Associate Professor of Education Curriculum & Instruction On February 22, 2006 Dr. Manner received the Teacher Educator Standards Commission Award from the Association of Teacher Educators at the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) 2006 Annual Meeting in Atlanta (along with the other charter members of the Teacher Educator Standards Cohort (TESC) from various universities throughout the United States). The Cohort was established in 2005 by the ATE Commission on Teacher Educator Standards, and was charged with addressing the seven standards, (as well as attendant indicators and evidences), through an ePortfolio development process hosted by TaskStream.  During both face-to-face meetings in Chicago, Bismarck, and Atlanta over the course of a year, as well as through electronic communications via TaskStream software, cohort members have examined the standards and the reflective, professional ePortfolio-creation process.  Ongoing peer review has supported the activities of the cohort, and their work has been reported in multiple presentations at the ATE Annual Meeting in Atlanta, February 18-22, 2006. TESC members and the Commission will now apply the findings of the group to possible revisions of the Teacher Educator Standards. They will also act as mentors to those interested in joining the project. Dr. Sarah Williams, Associate Professor Curriculum & Instruction Dr. Williams is the recipient of the 2006 College of Education ScholarTeacher Award.  The Faculty Recognition Subcommittee recognized Williams for effectively and consistently demonstrating excellence in teaching, producing an outstanding record of scholarly accomplishments (research), integrating her research with classroom teaching, and mentoring students and junior faculty. Mr. Tarrick C. Cox, Director Legislators’ School for Youth Leadership Development Rural Education Institute On February 20, 2006 Mr. Cox was the featured speaker for the J. H. Rose High School Future Teachers of America Club meeting. He spoke to students, showing an interest in teaching, the steps to becoming a teacher and the benefits of being a teacher. James W. Pinkney, Professor Counselor and Adult Education On February 23, 2006, Pinkney presented a program at the annual conference of the North Carolina Counseling Association in Durham, NC with Drs. Joseph C. Ciechalski and Florence S. Weaver.  The program title was “The LPC:  What it is; what it isn’t; and how to get it.” The Licensed Professional Counselor

Dr. Kristen Cuthrell, Assistant Professor Curriculum and Instruction On October 22, 2005, Dr, Cuthrell made a presentation at Delaware Association for the Education of Young Children Annual Conference, Newark, DE entitled “Science for Children”. On February 10, 2006, Dr. Cuthrell made a presentation at Mary Louis Stanton Reading/Language Arts Conference, Greenville, NC entitled “Image Making: Storytelling with Watercolors”. On February 22, 2006, Dr. Cuthrell gave a presentation at North Carolina Council for Social Studies Conference; Greensboro, NC entitled “Project Centered Learning at its Best!”. Debbie Metcalf, Visiting Lecturer Curriculum and Instruction Metcalf was a featured speaker at the AFCEC (Alabama Federation of the Council for Exceptional Children)-Super Conference 2006.  Metcalf is the 2004 CEC (Council for Exceptional Children) Clarissa Hug Teacher of the Year.  She offered two “make and take” sessions focusing on strategies to help all students access the general curriculum.  In addition, she put emphasis on creating multisensory learning tools that participants could take back to their schools and use right away. Larry Nash White, Assistant Professor Department: Library Science & Instructional Technology August 23, 2006 Invited peer reviewed paper and presentation at the Management and Marketing Section Program of the International Federation of Library Associations Annual Conference, Seoul, South Korea in August 2006. The program theme is “Strategic Planning Tools for the Tomorrow People – Library and Information Professionals of the 21st Century.” The paper/presentation is entitled, “Using the L.E.A 3.D. Technique to Turn Your Competition into an Emergent Strategic Tool.” and the paper/presentation focuses on the use of environmental scanning, strategic marketing, and competitive intelligence practices to benefit strategically from outside competition. Dr. White is the only U.S. invited presenter for the program. Invited peer reviewed paper and presentation at the Knowledge Management and Statistics and Evaluation Section Program of the International Federation of Library Associations Annual Conference, Seoul, South Korea in August 2006. The program theme is “Statistical Evaluation as a Tool for Knowledge Management with an Emphasis on Evidence-based Knowledge Management.”  The paper/presentation is entitled, “Library Administrators Knowledge Management Practices and Perceptions When Conducting Organizational Performance Assessment,” and the focus is how library administrators’ perceptions and practices of knowledge management, leadership style, and performance evaluation shape organizational performance reporting and metrics value to organizational strategic decision making processes.  In February 2006 an White had an



electronic publication entitled,“Where Is Norman Rockwell When You Need Him? Appreciating the Results of Challenges.” Library Worklife. Published by the American Library Association. March 30-31, 2006, White will have a peer reviewed paper presentation entitled “Community Oriented Librarian Recruitment Scholarships (COLRS): Assessing the Needs for School Library Media Specialist in Rural School Districts” at the North Carolina Association for Research in Education (NCARE) Annual Meeting in Hickory, North Carolina. The paper’s focus is assessing the need and identifying alternative methods of recruiting library media specialist in rural school districts of North Carolina.

John B. Harer, Assistant Professor Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology On April 7, 2006 Dr. John B Harer presented a paper on “Defending Gay Positive Literature” to the Southeastern Library Association’s bi-ennial conference on Friday, April 7, 2006 in Memphis, TN. Dr. Harer’s paper examined the recent censorship of young adult teen novels with a gay theme or character and presented strategies for libraries to defend such titles against censorship.

June 2006 Ryan Eash, Instructional Technology Consultant at the Center for Science, Mathematics, and Technology EducationDepartment of Mathematics and Science Education Dr. Linda James, Assistant Professor in Science Education-Department of Mathematics and Science Education Dr. Carol Brown Assistant Professor in Library Science and Instructional Technology-Department of Library Science Instructional Technology May 29 – June 2, 2006 - The Eta Chi Chapter received a Reading Is Fun (RIF) Grant this year from Kappa Delta Pi and partnered with two 3rd and 4th grade classrooms from Bethel School.  Students, using the science curriculum studied during the school year, wrote science content books.  Students typed their individual pages in a word processing template on a laptop computer and later inserted a scanned illustration created by each student.  Hardback books were published with the science content and each student was given their very own copy to keep.  Additional books were made and donated to the school library for other students and teachers to enjoy.  This exciting project was a huge success for all.    Dr. David J. Lee from NC State University.  Kevin Cherry, Visiting Instructor Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology On June 26, 2006, Kevin Cherry, a member of the Council of the American Library Association, was recently elected one of two state chapter representatives to serve on that governing body’s Planning and Budget Assembly.  ALA is the largest and oldest library association in the world with approximately 66,000 members. Johna Faulconer, Assistant Professor Department of Curriculum and Instruction On June 22-23, 2006, in Nashville, Dr. Faulconer presented three workshops to over 240 Tennessee mathematics teachers in a state Summit for Secondary Education.  These workshops were on the topics of Defining the Need for Reading/ Writing in Mathematics, Techniques to Increase Mathematical Understanding through Reading/Writing, and Assessing Mathematical Understanding through Reading/Writing.  She was assisted in these workshops by Dr. Bossé in the Department of Mathematics and Science Education. Dr. Vivian W. Mott, Chair Department of Counselor & Adult Education Department Dr. Mott recently successfully completed the inaugural class of the Pitt County Citizens Academy sponsored by the Pitt County Government. She and 20 participants of the academy were honored on Monday, November 20, 2006 during the Pitt County Commissioners meeting. The purpose of the Academy was to familiarize citizens to the functions of county government. During the 8-week sessions, participants met with County Commissioners, toured county offices and facilities such as the Solid Waste Center, ECVC Recycling, Detention Center, and Parks and Recreation, and heard presentations on economic development, social services, planning, and emergency management. Dr. Mott serves on the Pitt County Women’s Commission. Karen S. Sixty undergraduate, graduate, doctoral students, and students enrolled in on campus and distance education programs were awarded scholarships. Scholarship recipients were selected based on their academic performance, extracurricular activities, financialneed, and recommendations. The scholarships awarded ranged from $50 to $5000 with a total of $70,000 being awarded in 2006. This special ceremony recognizes and honors our donors while giving them the opportunity to meet the students they are supporting. In addition, the scholarship ceremony recognizes the recipients’ achievements while allowing them to personally meet and thank the donor(s) for their generosity.

taught one class a semester and served as Director of Student Teaching for 32 years at East Carolina University. Suzanne unexpectedly died in January of 1996. After her passing, her parents knew her legacy could continue making an impact. They established the Dr. Suzanne Wester scholarship in ECU’s College of Education. Suzanne said Jeff Wester. graduated high school at the young age of 16 and college by age 20. Suzanne’s father, William Wester, said it was not unusual to find her up early in the morning studying. “I would see her light on when I would get up for work. She wanted to master her work.” He added that Suzanne was a very good athlete. She played field hockey and was also a majorette in the band. “She liked spreading herself out and covering a lot of territory.” Suzanne later made a career as a physician practicing in the area of obstetrics and gynecology. Jeff Wester, Suzanne’s brother, says his sister always wanted to be a doctor. “It was her calling in life. Regardless of the circumstances Suzanne’s patients were always number one.” Jeff said when Suzanne was with you she was with you 100 percent. “She was a unique young lady. Many people don’t know that she had 400 sky dives from an airplane or that she had an interest in snakes. She kept and studied snakes in her late teens and early twenties.” said her uncle, Dr. Thomas Chambliss. Chambliss also remembers Suzanne having an interest and concern for young people. Her compassion was evident in her work. Perhaps her desire to make a difference in others lives came from her family. Suzanne’s mother and father were both teachers. Her aunt, Stella Chambliss, taught in the Pitt County School System for several years. And her uncle, Dr. Thomas Chambliss,

Jessica Beavans Grant demonstrated her commitment to education and continues to do so. She has been selected to be the recipient of the Dr. Suzanne Wester scholarship twice. Jessica has a love for learning and says she appreciates the value her parents instilled in her to get a good education. She said her parents told her the first day she stepped into her kindergarten class, “…an education was something that no one could take away.” From that day on, Jessica’s education has been her first priority. She came to East Carolina University to achieve her dream of becoming a teacher. She never dreamed of attending graduate school until she was encouraged by a professor. “No one in my family has ever gone to graduate school.” Her parents paid for her undergraduate tuition but she said knew she would be responsible for paying for graduate school and other expenses. Jessica applied for a scholarship and was apprehensive, “I applied for scholarships in high school but did not receive any. I knew I would be up against other students who were smarter or more deserving than me.” Jessica said she was prepared to get a student loan. However, much to her surprise she did receive a scholarship. And the one she received covered all of her expenses. “It has been an absolute blessing to me. I would not be where I am if it had not been for this scholarship.” said Jessica.

Jessica had the opportunity to meet and talk with the Wester and Chambliss families at the College of Education’s Scholarship Ceremonies in 2005 and 2006. “Stephanie Wester (Suzanne's mother) was so overwhelmed the first time I met her. I can’t imagine what she was thinking. They are such nice and warm people. They have taking me in, and told me to call them if I ever needed anything.” Dr. Thomas and Stella Chambliss say the opportunity the scholarship provides to students would have pleased Suzanne. Dr. Chambliss sits on the scholarship review committee. He says he is happy to take part in the selection process because he knows the kind of recipient his sister Stephanie and brother-in-law William would want. “Jessica is a very deserving, great young lady with lots of potential. She will be a tremendous addition to the teaching profession.” Jessica got married on May 27, 2006. In addition to covering her school expenses, the scholarship has also given her and her new husband one less financial burden as newlyweds, and motivated Jessica to make good grades. “I look at my course work at the beginning of each semester and tell myself I can do this work. I expect myself to get A’s in my classes. And my family is supportive of me because they know that is what I am in school to do.” Jessica wants to keep Suzanne’s legacy alive and honor her by being the best student she can be. She graduated in December 2006 and teaches in Raleigh. Dr. Suzanne Wester was connected to education through her own love of learning and by her family of teachers. Her connection will continue for years to come Dr. Suzanne Wester through the scholarship. Suzanne’s brother says it is good to know the scholarship will continue helping others recognize their dreams long after he and his family are gone. “Helping out students is a wonderful legacy to Suzanne.” ■

The Ledford Family Reconnects with College Becky Keith Ledford’s passion was teaching children. Now the Keith family’s joy is providing an opportunity for teachers to further their education. Becky, a Kinston native, attended East Carolina University for undergraduate school and graduate school. Her sister, Donna Keith, says Becky always wanted to be a teacher. Donna says her sister was a great student. “She loved her teachers and was always the teachers pet. She loved everything about school.” Becky was offered many scholarships from various colleges but her sister Donna said she chose to attend East Carolina because of its reputation of being a great teaching school. After graduating, Becky taught 4th grade at Pactolus Elementary School and at Wellcome Middle School in Pitt County. Becky had the desire to be the best teachBecky Keith Ledford er she could be. This is why she returned to ECU to further her education working towards receiving her Certificate in Reading Education. But tragically in 1981, Becky and her mother were killed in an automobile accident. A year later, her husband, Buzz Ledford, and family held a benefit concert to raise money to establish a scholarship in her memory at ECU. Over the years Becky’s family lost touch with the College of Education. In June 2006, the Keith family and the College of Education reconnected. Donna wanted to continue Becky’s legacy and made an additional $25,000 pledge. Donna says keeping the scholarship going is important to her family. “Teaching is important and finding good teachers is tough. Eastern Carolina needs them.” In March, the 2006 Becky Keith Ledford Scholarship was awarded to Kelly Lyn Phillips at the annual College of Education Scholarship Ceremony. Phillips is a teacher at Tarawa Terrace 1 Primary School on the Camp Lejeune Base in Jacksonville, NC. She is a reading/math support teacher for kindergarten and first grade students. 14

Phillips says she decided to further her education at ECU because she wanted to acquire additional strategies to help her students overcome reading problems while getting updated on the most current reading research. “Receiving the Becky Ledford Scholarship has been very inspirational and helpful for me. I was not even aware that the scholarship existed until Dr. Terry Atkinson, whom I have the utmost respect for, nominated me. She has had a positive impact on my learning experience at ECU and her coursework has caused me constantly to self-reflect and reevaluate everything I do with my students. In addition, the scholarship ceremony gave me the opportunity to meet Mrs. Ledford’s family who shared the importance of the scholarship with my family and me. After meeting them, I felt a stronger connection to the reason why the scholarship was created.” The scholarship not only provided a financial help to Phillips, it also gave her an opportunity to model to her own children how hard work and dedication helps you in life. “My children were able to attend the scholarship ceremony which sparked questions and they also enjoyed meeting Dr. Atkinson and Ms. Ledford’s family. I feel very fortunate and blessed to have been nominated for the scholarship.” Phillips says she hopes to continue helping children overcome reading problems and discover the joy of reading. She is also interested in family literacy and wants to educate families about the importance of promoting literacy habits from infancy into adulthood. Donna says Becky would have been ecstatic to know that there was a way for teachers in their careers to be able to further their knowledge through a scholarship in her name. Donna hopes the Becky Keith Ledford Scholarship will continue to enable teachers like Kelly Lyn Phillips to further their education while continuing to teach in Eastern North Carolina. ■

Dean Sheerer Asumes New Role Dr. Marilyn Sheerer, steps down as dean after serving nearly ten years in ECU’s College of Education. A year ago, Chancellor Steve Ballard asked Sheerer to step in as interim vice chancellor for advancement while the university conducted

a search. During that year, Sheerer also continued her role as dean for the College of Education. After a successful year of juggling both positions, Chancellor Ballard approached her a second time. This time Sheerer was asked to serve as interim vice chancellor for student life. Sheerer said after the second request, she felt like she needed to turn in her resignation allowing the search for a new dean to begin. Chancellor Ballard said, “She brings to this new position outstanding talent, leadership, energy and an unerring ability to do what is best for East Carolina.” Although Sheerer is known for her work in education, her masters degree is in student services. Before coming to ECU, she worked in student life positions at Temple University. Sheerer says after a career in teacher education, it seems that she is coming full circle to return to this area of university work.  “The past ten years in this College have been very rewarding to me personally.  I look forward to working with the Executive Council under Chancellor Ballard’s leadership to make this institution even better on behalf of our students.  I consider it a privilege to work here and be part of an institution that values its service mission.” said Sheerer. Dr. Sheerer’s new appointment as interim vice chancellor for student life became effective January 2007.  Dr. John Swope, associate dean for the College of Education, will serve as interim dean as a national search is conducted for a new dean.  Swope joined ECU in 1975, and he has served as associate dean since 1991.  He has been a department chair on three different occasions, including chair of Business, Career, and Technical Education for five years; interim chair of Foundations and Research for one year; and interim chair of the Department of Industrial Technology for one year.  His funded grants total more than $3 million, including Project HEART with Dr. Betty Beacham, and he has published more than two dozen articles and papers.  Swope’s new appointment was also effective July 1, 2006. ■

Margo Arnold Margo teaches 5th grade at Chicod Elementary.  She received her BS and MAEd in Special Education and completed licensure requirements for elementary at East Carolina University. Arnold was nominated by her students for the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year award. After being selected as a local Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year, she received $1000 for her classroom and a $100 award for her personal use.

Beverly Watson Carroll Beverly retired as a school principal and now has gone back to work as a contracted exceptional children’s coordinator.

Sherwin Q. Ealy, II Sherwin graduated from ECU in 1994. He is currently a principal in the Cincinnati Public School system. His school has been recently recognized by the state of Ohio for improving academic performance.

Lauren Marie Fields Lauren graduated in May of 2005 and is loving her first year of teaching at Creekside Elementary in Winterville, NC. She is also engaged to be married very soon.

Cecil Earl Long Cecil is currently working for the Edgecombe County Board of Education. Cecil was honored as Principal of the Year for his work at Southwest Edgecombe High School and was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Edgecombe County shortly thereafter. He retired in June of 1987.

After graduating from East Carolina in 1970, Weldon was the High School counselor at Seeley Lake HS in Montana for 7 years before returning to being a pilot, which he did for the next 19 years. He wrote a 519 page book on his life and published it this past year – “My Downside Up Life”, published by Trafford Books in Canada.

Catherine Ryndock Tomon Catherine is currently the principal of Broad Creek Middle School in Newport, NC and is in her 2nd year of her Doctoral Program at ECU. She has recently received the “Power of One Award” for the impact she has had on her community. She was also the Wachovia Principal of the Year in Carteret County 20052006.

Fred Allen Trueblood Jr. Fred graduated in December 1995 with a BS in Middle Grades Education. He is married with a son, Tucker Allen, born in February 2005. He has been a state trooper with Wake County since 1997. He has used what he learned in the School of Education to train, evaluate and teach courses to other troopers.

The Ron Clark Story A made-for-TV movie starring former Friends actor, Matthew Perry, titled “The Ron Clark Story” details Ron Clark’s experiences in the classroom in both North Carolina and New York City. Clark graduated from the College of Education at ECU where he was a North Carolina Teaching Fellow. Clark has been a teacher since 1995. Clark’s work with disadvantaged students in both rural North Carolina and in innercity Harlem gained worldwide attention. He has been a guest to the White House three times and was honored by President and Mrs. Clinton. Clark was also named Disney’s American Teacher of the Year in 2001. Since receiving that distinction, he has been interviewed by Katie Couric on the Today Show, and has appeared twice on the

Oprah Winfrey Show. He was also featured in O Magazine where Oprah named him her first “Phenomenal Man!” Clark has two published books and also makes appearances speaking to teachers, PTA’s and school boards across the country. Vivian Covington, Director of Teacher Education in the College of Education at ECU, says, “Ron is an excellent motivator. He has a true passion for teaching that really comes across, it is just incredible.” Mary Beth Corbin, Director for the Teaching Fellows Program at ECU added, “Our program is obviously thrilled to watch his continued success.  The stories he continues to share about teaching can only serve as a positive catalyst for the education profession.” ■

Annual Educators Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony The annual induction ceremony into the Educators Hall of Fame was held on November 11, 2006 in Fletcher Recital Hall. This year’s speaker was Ann Holland, accomplished Latin teacher, photographer, and wife of ECU Athletics Director, Terry Holland. Ann’s mother, Katie Corbett Johnson, a 1931 graduate of East Carolina Teachers College (ECTC) was among the 28 honorees inducted. The ceremony was followed by a reception for inductees and their guests to view their plaques displayed on the Educators Hall of Fame wall located in the Speight Building. The Educators Hall of Fame recognizes and highlights the service of those whom East Carolina alumni and friends are most grateful. This permanent recognition was inaugurated in the fall of 1999, and is displayed prominently in the Speight Building on the ECU campus.

Also among this year’s inductees were three sisters who together taught a total of 124 years; Callaree Jarvis Horton, Mona Waddell Jarvis and Ada Lee Jarvis. Members inducted into the Educators Hall of Fame are university professors, teachers, counselors, school board members, or other persons whose service made an impact in the lives of those recognizing them through a donation gift. All gifts received go to the Hall of Fame Scholarship endowment. Annual interest from the $1 million endowment will fund merit-based scholarships for College of Education students. Educators Hall of Fame The College of Education’s Advancement Council presents a unique commemorative opportunity known as the Educators Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame recognizes and highlights the service of those educators and education advocates to whom East Carolina’s alumni and friends are most grateful. You may chose to honor a professor, teacher, counselor, community member, or anyone whose service to the education profession had a decisive impact upon your life and the lives of others. Inaugurated in the fall of 1999, the permanent recognition of Hall of Fame honorees is noted on personal., inscribed plaques which are prominently displayed on the Educators Wall of Fame located in the Speight Building. An online directory is

available in a special Hall of Fame section on the College of Education’s Web site, www.coe.ecu. edu. Your minimum gift of $1,000 ensures a plaque reserved for your honoree. The Educators Hall of Fame currently has 300 honorees, with membership limited to one thousand members. All gifts received go into the Educators Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund. This $1 million dollar endowment will fund merit-based scholarships for College of Education students, beginning with the 2007-08 academic year. These prestigious merit scholarships will help attract more of the best and brightest students to our College of Education. We welcome you in this recruitment effort and that of publicly recognizing influential educators and advocates of education.
