Program Information

Classes that do not reach sufficient enrollment by May 15 will be canceled. Please register before this date to ensure classes run.

What is College for Kids and Teens? College for Kids and Teens (CFK/CFT), through the School of Continuing Education (SCE), is a hands-on enrichment program for students entering grades K5-12 who have high academic potential, motivation and talent. Now in its 36th year, the program consists of one- and two-week classes in Creative Arts, Humanities/Social Sciences, Languages & Cultures, Math & Computers, and Science. Taught by UW system faculty or highly qualified and experienced instructors, all programs provide an “academic edge,” and class sizes are limited to 16 students unless otherwise noted. PLEASE NOTE • Kindergartners must be five years old by June 10, and must have prior five-days-a-week school experience to participate in our program. This rule will be strictly enforced and children who do not meet this requirement will be subject to immediate withdrawal with no refund given. • When registering for CFK and CFT, use next fall grade levels.

• Some classes are designed for a broader range of students (e.g. grades 6-12), and others are more specifically targeted – look for grade levels listed next to each program number. • Select courses have a $5-25 computer lab or material fee included in the price.

When and Where?

How Do I Register?

Classes are held Mon.-Fri., June 20-Aug. 12 on the UWM campus, unless otherwise noted. Specific class dates/times are included in course descriptions.

Registration opens each year on Jan. 15. Call, fax in your registration, or go online to uwm.edu/sce-kids to enroll.

Registration Policy Once your child or teen is registered there are no refunds or transfers. Refunds are made only for classes cancelled by CFK/CFT.

Confirmation of Registration

(Note: Mailed registrations add several days to the registration process and lessen the likelihood of availability in your desired class.)

Discount Code If registering for six or more classes, please call (414) 227-3360 or email [email protected] to receive a one-time discount code.

Your receipt and parental permission forms will be emailed to you for completion and return. If you do not provide an email address, you will receive them by mail. You may also visit uwm.edu/sce-kids to download permission forms right away. All participants are encouraged to have their own health insurance, as only limited secondary accident insurance is provided by the University.

To make things easier for students and parents, we offer supervised care in the Union Terrace Room before and after the program day, for a minimal charge. Chaperoning children to or from class is included in the fee. Come early or stay late. You must sign up for the full week.

College for Kids/Teens’ (CFK/T) partnership with the UWM Writing Project results in offering student writers a chance to work with three professionally and academically trained TCs per class! These instructors utilize materials from the Writing Project to shape a classroom of supportive learning.

The UWM Writing Project – Young Writers’ Academy

The UWM Writing Project - Introductory Teen Writing Academy

The UW-Milwaukee Writing Project’s (UWMWP) camp for aspiring writers entering grades 6 through 8 is back by popular demand. Meet each day in writing groups facilitated by experienced writers and teachers whose goal is to inspire imagination and have fun! Write daily in a creative, supportive environment. Students of all writing abilities are welcome, although this camp will focus on a broad range of introductory writing:

Sponsored by the UW-Milwaukee Writing Project, this writing class is designed specifically for teens who are interested in practicing writing across three genres: fiction, poetry, and non-fiction/essay. These classes are facilitated by experienced writers and teachers who will introduce writing activities that are fun, helpful, and inspiring to the imagination! Student writers will:

• Explore a variety of genres, including poetry, short stories, essays and more. • Receive individual instruction and feedback in small groups from UWMWP Teacher-Consultants. • Learn introductory and foundational writing techniques used by professional writers. • Meet and share writing with young writers from throughout the county. • Engage in the full writing process: brainstorming, drafting, revising, and editing.

Because this writing academy is sponsored by the UWM Writing Project, we utilize a strong curriculum anchored by low teacher-tostudent ratios (1 instructor for every 5 or 6 students). This allows the opportunity to learn more about and help writers individually! The Young Writers’ Academy culminates in a celebration of writing at the end of the week, where students are encouraged to share your favorite pieces! New and returning participants are welcomed to attend! Fee: $189 Peter Brooks Discovery Camp 1, 9am-1:30pm Gr. 6-8, Prog. No. 8410-0437 Please Note: There is a 30-minute, supervised lunch break every day. Please bring a bag lunch or, if you have permission to leave unattended, you can purchase lunch at the Student Union.

* Classes for grades 6-12

• Explore concepts from three genres including poetry, fiction/short stories, and creative non-fiction/essay. • Choose two genres and produce polished writing pieces. • Learn writing techniques used by professional writers. • Receive individual instruction and response in small groups. • Cultivate an initial writing process: brainstorming, free writing, drafting, and revising. • Celebrate writing with a culminating community event designed to share our writing with parents, teachers and peers.

Since this is a writing academy sponsored by the UWM Writing Project, we utilize a strong curriculum anchored by low teacher to student ratios (1 instructor for every 5 or 6 students). This allows us the opportunity to know writers as individuals! This is open to all students who are interested in writing even if they have not participated in other writing programs (some background in writing is welcomed and encouraged but not mandatory). Students can bring previous work but will spend the week focused on new writing projects that fit within our three genre areas. Fee: $189 Peter Brooks Discovery Camp 2, 9am-1:30pm Gr. 9-12, Prog. No. 8440-4016 Please Note: There is a 30-minute, supervised lunch break every day. Please bring a bag lunch or, if you have permission to leave unattended, you can purchase lunch at the Student Union.

The Sky’s the Limit

Meet Rube Goldberg

Fly into the wild blue yonder as we learn about the basics of aeronautics and Bernoulli’s principle. Build complex paper airplanes, a balsa wood glider and test our planes in a wind tunnel. Become an aerospace engineer and design a parachute system that will safely land a raw egg from a fall of 50 feet! The final class project will include building hot air balloons with your classmates.

Make the most amazing and wacky machine possible by combining science and your imagination. As you begin to understand the laws of physics, you will be able to use them in ways that will both startle and amuse you. Who says science isn’t fun (or funny)? Build away with Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, sculptor and author, Rube Goldberg, as your inspiration!

Wristbands are given out on the first day of a session, and are to be worn every day. If your child is enrolled in more than one session, he/ she can receive a new band at the beginning of each session. Please bring the old wristband back in order to get a new one. It is your responsibility to make sure your child wears the wristband every day. The colors indicate to our staff what privileges each child has, such as leaving campus unattended or not being included in pictures. Children are not allowed to participate in class unless they are wearing a wristband to verify that they are enrolled. The cost to replace the wristbands is $20 for the orange and $3 for all others. (If you need to take it off for any reason, please bring it back and it will be replaced for free.)
