Coins for the Journey

This is the story behind Coins for the Journey.

Several years ago my daughter asked me, “How have you been able to walk with the Lord for nearly 40 years?” I really did not have an answer, I had never thought about that. A few months later I was on an airplane flying from Warsaw to Sofia, Bulgaria and the question returned in my mind. I began to ponder what would be the right answer. Then it came to me, it was the people who spoke God’s word into my life that had made the difference and I began to write as fast as I could the names of the men and women (pastors, teachers, mentors and conference speakers). When I stopped writing I counted the number of names and it totaled 36 and I thought why not 40? So within a few minutes four more names came to mind. Then I thought, what were the messages that these men and women brought to me? Then I began to write the names of the messages, books, sermons or series that had made an indelible impact on my life. At this point the basic research had been done. Now as a legacy gift I would begin the process of finding, creating or obtaining digital copies of these resources so that I could pass them on to my children and grandchildren, so that if anyone asked how did grandfather walk with Jesus there would be a roadmap through the various men and women who guided me along the way. What would this project be called? I was on a journey and I remembered that American Express, in their commercials, challenged us to “not leave home without it”, so it became clear to me that in order to take a journey we need currency or credit card. Over the next two years my focus became collecting these messages, and along the way I met two retired U.S. Army officers for whom I provided input, advice or training and each of them handed me a commemorative challenge coin which described their journey through the U.S. Army. When Gen. Vernon B Lewis handed me his coin I thought this was his coin for his journey and maybe I should find a way to take what I had learned, in what was now 42 years, and put it on a coin. So that’s where it all began. It took about six months to design the coin and have the initial run produced. When the coins arrived, I opened the box and put a few in my pocket and carried them for a week thinking about how I would use these and who would receive them from me. Then it happened, one Friday afternoon I was in the film studio of a very high profile media individual who had just made possible a meaningful gift to a friend of mine and I thought, he just gave a wonderful gift and I should give him two gifts, two coins, for his journey in life. I reached in my pocket and pulled out two coins gave him a quick overview of the symbolism and explained that this was 42 years in the making and that it contained almost everything I had learned in 42 years of walking with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Immediately, he asked, “Where can I read about this and better understand what you are saying in this coin?” I said that nothing was written at this point to which he replied will you come back to my office for lunch and teach me everything that is on this coin. Of course, yes was my answer, and then I realized that this coin might be used like the Isaiah scroll and the “chance” meeting on the road between Philip and the Ethiopian who asked him to explain the scroll which he had purchased in Jerusalem. Philip explained the Isaiah message and the gospel then spread to North Africa and then throughout the continent. So the journey continues and I trust that you will find great value in this coin and that it will be a forever reminder of the truth in God’s word for your life. Coins for the Journey!! J. Coin Side 1:

Christ Died For You Cross copy: CHRIST DIED FOR YOU

Cross center image: The Crucifixion in 33 AD The cross is the hinge of history that changed the world. (day 1 of 3)

Verse in the outer circle: Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love towards us in that while we were sinners, Christ died for us.

Image Sections of the Cross: Presence (upper left): Where – From the garden to the temple. All through history God has desired to have his people in His presence. We see this in the garden, then the tabernacle and then in the temple. God wants to be in relationship with man and that required boundaries.

Law of S & D (upper right): Why - The Law of Sin and Death - Rom 8:1 God set forth the boundaries in the Law that was given to Moses. The image of the Torah and the Ten Commandments represent the Law. This law is like the natural law of gravity and pulls us down. It is a natural operating system.

2 Cups (lower left): When – The cups represent the choice and consequence in that day.

There are 2 cups from which every man will drink. The cup of Wrath, which he deserves; or the cup of Life, which is a grace gift from God, not earned and not deserved.

Gifts (lower right): Who – Natural gifts of God are for each person with responsibility for good use. God has given all men a set of gifts: body, soul and spirit, life, choice, consequence, love, forgiveness, law and His presence This is not an exhaustive list but is a starting point. © 2016 Coins For the Journey, J. Coin Side 2:

Christ Lives In You Cross copy: CHRIST LIVES IN YOU

Cross center image: The Resurrection/The Empty Tomb in 33 AD is the hinge of history (day 3 of 3).

Verse in the outer circle: 2 Corinthians 5:17 If anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation, old things pass away and behold all things become new.

Image Sections of the Cross: Presence (upper left): Where – In each believer as the temple of the Holy Spirit. For those “In Christ” the great mystery of the ages.... is Christ in you, the Hope of Glory (Col 1:27) The Resurrection Spirit of Christ lives in you....the promised comforter and our advocate the paraclete.

Law of S of L (upper right): Why - The Law of Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus - Rom 8:1 This is a new Law that has the power to overcome the Law of Sin and Death (Gravity). This is a new operating system for the believer in Jesus Christ. As a follower of Christ, filled with the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, this new law is like aerodynamics it overcomes the power of gravity as long as there is power. Think of an airplane soaring, until it loses power and the law of gravity takes over. So in the Christian life, lived without the power and presence of Christ.

2 Cups (lower left): When – The cups represent the choice and consequence in that day. The believer has received the Cup of Life because Christ took the Cup of Wrath for us. We can now take the Cup of Remembrance (the Lords Supper/ Holy Communion) and the Bread representing that His Body was broken for us.

Gifts (lower right): Who – The spiritual gifts are given to every believer. Rom 12:3-8; 1 Cor. 12:8-10 and Eph. 4:11 All Believers the moment they come into relationship with Christ receive an additional set of gifts from God. The new creation is not just fixed up but made new. There are Spiritual Gifts to allow you to serve the King of Kings. 1 Peter 4:10-11 divides the gifts into two groups: 10 Speaking and 9 Serving. © 2016 Coins For the Journey, J. How to Use the Coin of Salvation The coin of salvation may be used either as an evangelistic tool for as an equipping tool for followers of Jesus Christ. Cross is the most recognizable Christian symbol, worn as jewelry, displayed in religious artwork and on top of Christian houses of worship. The ugly past of the cross is the cruel practice of crucifixion which was a common brutal practice from 500 BC to 380. When Spartacus fell over 6,000 people were crucified in one day. Around 300 A.D. Constantine outlawed the practice of crucifixion. Unfortunately the practice has been renewed and we see it exercised in Islamic terrorism as a way to demonstrate extreme cruelty and torture. 1. Begin with an overview of the crucifixion (center image) side of the coin of salvation and read the inscription on the cross, “Christ died for you” point out the crucifix in the center of cross read the verse in the outer circle from Romans 5:8 But God demonstrated His Love towards us.....Christ Died for us”. 2. Next, explain that this is but one side of the coin of salvation. Turning the coin over, read the inscription on the cross “Christ lives in you” point out that at the center of this cross is an image of the empty tomb and the three crosses on the hill above the tomb. Read the verse around the outer circle, 2Cor 5:17 “If anyone is IN CHRIST he is a new creation...all things become new”. At this point explain that believing that Christ died for our sins is sufficient for salvation but there is much more for the believer, like the abundant life that Christ promised in John 10:10. The Holy Spirit, the resurrection life of Jesus Christ indwells in the believer and can empower them to live the Christian life. It is important to note that if we try to live the Christian life in our own power we will fail and that it is only through living a Christ centered Christ filled, Christ empowered life that can we walk in the victory that has already been given to us. This was the promise that Christ made, that he would send the comforter (the Paraclete) who would be our advocate, our comfort and our strong tower. Understanding these two sides may be the most important thing you can learn after coming to faith in Christ. 3. Return to side 1 (Christ Died For You) and take them thru the 4 quadrants of the cross: The Presence, The Law, The Cups and the Gifts (see explainatory notes on the preceding two pages). 4. Turn the coin over to side 2 (Christ Lives In You) and take them thru the 4 quadrants of the cross: The Presence, The Law, The Cups and the Gifts (see explainatory notes on the preceding two pages). 5. Next, turn the top of the coin (side 2) down towards you and the edge copy will be ready for you to begin reading: 66 Books, 10 Doctrines, 10 Aspects, all in abreviated form. You do not need to know all of these but you can share the general idea that these are the foundational concepts and the bedrock for spiritual growth and living the Christ centered, faithful, victorious and abundant Christian life. 6. Close with this encouragement, that the Christian Life is a journey and this coin is an appropriate currency for the journey. Bless them, lead them to Christ and pray for them and their family. Ask if they want to meet again for discipleship and encouragement. © 2016 Coins For the Journey, J. Keet Lewis and www.CoinsFTJ.com

The edge copy around the coin salvation is a complete theological education. This represents a lifetime of study and commitment to the spiritual disciplines of the Christian faith. God’s word, the Holy Bible, referred to here as the 66 Books, is our manual for life and a light for our journey. It is vital for us to know the structure and layout of the Bible. I encourage you to look at the table of contents in your Bible and with your pen mark-up that page, breaking it down into the various sections indicated herein. Knowing and using the table of contents and the concordance in the back of your Bible, as well as online or mobile apps will allow you to navigate and find passages which will contains words of help hope and comfort. It provides rest for our weary souls. A lamp to guide us in the night or when we travel down lonely poorly lit roads. Reading, meditating, studying, memorizing, teaching and living the 66 Books is the real life journey for the follower of Christ. Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of the soul and the spirit, and of the joints in the morrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and the intents of the heart.” 2 Timothy 2:15 “be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” Understanding the major doctrines of the Christian faith will provide you a grid through which you will be able to understand the world around you both physically and spiritually. I encourage you to study and have a working knowledge of each of these major doctrines as they will give you strength and perspective for the journey. Of all of the studies referred to in the edge copy, the study of the 10 Attributes of God is probably the most significant and life-changing study. Dr. Bill Bright taught this to me in the late 1970’s, when he told me that apart from coming to know Jesus Christ as Savior, the most important aspect of Christian life is knowing and applying the knowledge of God’s attributes to our daily lives. When we are fearful we are failing to trust in God’s sovereignty, omniscience and omnipotence. When we feel alone we are failing to trust in God’s omnipresence and his love. I urge you to learn his attributes, pray through his attributes, and apply them in your life every day, all through the day, in your counseling and encouragement of others. The 10 Aspects of the Cross is an exceedingly rich study in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Learn to pray through these aspects of the cross and you will grow deeper in your relationship with Christ and more appreciative of all that He did for you and for me. The last area of study around the edge of the coin is taken from a multipart Bible series taught by Dr. John Hunter in the 1970s. Dr. Hunter had a huge impact in my spiritual development and this is a classic John Hunter study. He urges us to walk in the Victory we have already received in Christ. To walk in the Indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. To live life with a Thankful heart knowing that God has given us Ability to do all that he has for us to do. He challenges us to be Merciful to live in the Inheritance that we have received and finally live as a New creation in Christ Jesus and experience all things new. These are spiritual vitamins. © 2016 Coins For the Journey, J. Keet Lewis and www.CoinsFTJ.com

What People Are Saying about “Coins for the Journey” If you were given a Coin for the Journey and were asked to consider how to best use this coin and reviewing this document, please write a short encouraging statement or endorsement and it will be printed here and on the eventual www.CoinsFTJ.com website. Please send me an email with your comments and or endorsement to [email protected] “At one point during His earthly ministry Jesus answered his questioners by directing their attention to a coin. Over the ages and across cultures coins have often been stamped with images and symbols of great significance and importance. Keet Lewis has taken this concept and sealed his coin with the greatest symbols of all – symbols related to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and its impact in his life. Allow him to explain it to you and it just might change your life” – David Rea “Keet Lewis has been a trusted and valued friend and colleague for over 25 years. He lost his father when he was 20, just a few years after trusting Christ as his Savior, his maturity in Christ came through God’s word, as he was inspired by various mentors who exposed him to messages, books, sermons, and other mentors that greatly impacted his life. These essential lessons he outlines on “Coins for the Journey” are not just a legacy to his children, and an answer to how he maintained his Christian walk over the last 40 plus years, but also a legacy that we can pass on to our children and others who need a guidepost or manual for “study and commitment” to the disciplines and essentials of the Christian faith. Many lives will be changed by sharing this coin and the lessons that have help shape and inform Keet’s Christian journey and kept him on the right path for all these years.” - Steve Ridley “When our friend Keet Lewis showed us the Coin for the Journey I loved it right away without even knowing all it really meant. After reading the brochure I was fascinated and so touched by it that I could not wait to go show it to my friends and family and anybody I would encounter to share with them and witness the whole Bible and its meaning through a coin. It is an unbelievable tool to reminds us every moment about our personal relationship with Jesus. The brochure itself could be a complete lifetime Theology class. I envision the Coin for the Journey distributed all over the world and the brochure translated in different languages.” - Julie “When Keet Lewis took me through the Coin For The Journey, this gold coin came alive with inspiration and passion to better know God and walk with Him moment by moment. The images and the brochure present a wealth of theological truth all in a coin. It is a seminary curriculum on a coin which I desire to share with my friends and associates that we may all grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord.....Thanks Keet, I am blessed that you are my friend.” – Doug De Groote “Keet Lewis has done a masterful job at summarizing the key doctrines of the faith in a summary and powerful fashion.” - Kelly Shackelford “When Jesus came to earth it was to make God’s message clear to people. Jesus taught simply about walking daily and reestablishing the Garden of Eden relationship of intimate interaction. Keet’s coin simplifies hundreds of pages of history, prophecy and teaching into symbols on this coin. Well done Keet. That simplicity is in the Spirit of Jesus himself and his mission-not to just know about God but to truly know Him as a person.” - Bob Sims © 2016 Coins For the Journey, J.
