AN IMPORTANT ACTOR IN ECONOMIC LIFE The CNRS develops productive relationships with industry, helps laboratories enhance their research and transfers technology to the business world I The CNRS has entered into 25 framework agreements with large industrial groups. It has set up 84 associated research laboratories with businesses. I With a portfolio of 4,535 patent families, the CNRS is among France’s top 10 patent filers. I More than 1,000 start-ups have been launched, stemming from research carried out in CNRS laboratories since 1999. I The CNRS plays an active role in France’s 14 technology transfer companies (SATT) and is a member of France’s 46 competitiveness clusters (out of 70). 6

5 TYPES OF CNRS INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIVE TOOLS

I PRC- Joint research projects with joint call for proposals funding of travel and living costs for joint research projects for 1 to 3 years, 3 to 10 k€, calls launched every year with specific countries – non renewable I PICS - Projects for International Scientific Cooperation: funding for travel and subsistence, meetings, small equipment for joint research projects for 3 years based on previous collaborations, up to 6 k€ per year – non renewable I LIA - International Associated Laboratories: virtual joint research laboratory for 4 years based on a common research program, up to 15 k€ per year – renewable I GDRI - International Research Networks: several associated laboratories in 2 or more countries for coordination of a research field; funding for mobility, exchange of information, seminars and workshops, up to 20 k€ per year for 4 years – renewable I UMI - International Joint Research Units: laboratory located at a single site overseas or in France, co-directed by CNRS & a foreign organization, associates researchers and necessary means provided by the 2 partners to conduct a scientific program for a duration of 4 years – renewable 13
