Club Chronicle  March | April 2015 

From the Desk of... R. Bradley Barden General Manager, Chief Operating Officer

Dear Members,

Every year during the months of February and March, the Club goes through a “changing of the guard” with its Board of Directors. For all of you that are preferred stockholders (fully paid or not), you have already received your 2014 financial summary of club activities and your ballot to vote for new directors. This year your slate includes 8 names to fill 5 positions on the board and it is extremely important that you cast your vote and be accounted for. We struggle each year to meet the minimum requirements of obtaining a majority vote (greater than 50%) in order to execute this vital component of the Club’s bylaws; we have been averaging around 52% over the past 15 years. Please cast your vote by selecting 5 candidates, sign your ballot and return it to us in the self-addressed stamped envelope we provided and thank you in advance for participating. This year we have two directors departing the board after completing 6 full years of service. Many thanks to Mary Byrd Denham, President/ CEO and Skip Kughn, Treasurer for their personal commitment and dedication to the club and for providing incredible leadership during these past “tough” years since 2008. Both of them were highly involved from the beginning to the end with the club’s largest single project, our indoor tennis facility and the ladies cottage renovation. Countless hours were served on many different committees in order for the club to make this dream come true and Mary Byrd and Skip deserve a big round of applause for their efforts. In addition, we thank departing director, Natalie Langley for her 3 years of service

on the board and with her help on the membership, decorating and pool committees.

With spring fast approaching, the Club has many special events breaking during the next two months. These events are highlighted throughout this newsletter and we hope that you will find a fun and exciting program to get involved with in tennis, golf or dining. The Palm Sunday Easter Egg Roll and Easter Sunday fill up quickly so please make your reservation as early as possible to ensure your family a table for these two big days. Other significant events include the opening of men’s golf with the Bourbon and Branchwater tournament on March 21st, Demo Day on April 10th and the Boonsboro Fire and Rescue squad’s annual charity tournament on April 20th. Tennis USTA leagues get heated up as our club teams set forth to retain some of the championship trophies and we host the Sara K. Buckley Ladies Pink Invitational on April 23rd. I would like to conclude by offering a very special thanks to all of the members, past and present who have made my first 17 years here at the Club so rewarding. I start my 18th year as your manager on April 2nd and could not be happier with the continued support from our own Boonsboro Country Club family. Penny and I have certainly enjoyed our time in Lynchburg and cherish all of the wonderful memories and friendships we have made with so many people. This is truly a very special place. Best Regards, Brad Barden, CCM

To our Boonsboro Country Club members, as we continue to face the rise in food cost, we are determined to maintain the quality of ingredients for our daily menu production. We will maintain our pricing structure. As you all may have already seen in many food publications, there’s a push for sustainable seafood, poultry and meats which are mainstays of our society today. Thanks to our millennials, we have decided to make a push in taking a closer look at our vendors for antibiotic free, hormone free, no preservatives, pesticide free, and other manmade chemicals, that are sometimes found in proteins we consume in our daily diet.

This has become a big concern for many chefs, like myself, around the country. We’re taking the initiative to demand better results in the different proteins we buy for our recipes. One of our biggest approaches that we have taken so far is buying ABF (Antibiotic Free) chickens; we have been working these into our buffet selections and also our Two for Tuesday specials within the last month and half. We are planning on having ABF chicken tenders and chicken breast incorporated into our menu within the Clubhouse and Poolside deli snack shop. I have been working on getting top quality sustainable seafood for our Friday night seafood specials, and have had great success with the approach to focus on maintaining quality to a premium.

our members like you. This comes down to timing and making sure the product is here for service. Our next project is to be able to have sustainable beef and pork with various cuts that are from our local farmers that believes in grass feeding their cattle and following strict guidelines. I believe our food should be pure and with getting better nutritional results, we will help you in keeping healthy lifestyle habits. We will continue to carefully source these ingredients in today’s tough market. We thank you for your continued support and as always I am here to help with your dietary concerns and food allergies. Sincerely, Andre Ellis, C..E.C.

This endeavor has been very challenging with the inclement weather being a roller coaster. However, we still didn’t let the weather stop us from getting the premium products we desire for

Chip Shots John Comninaki PGA Professional, Director of Golf

This is the most exciting time of the year for the golf shop staff. We have spent the last two months preparing for the upcoming season. The staff has been evaluating and fine tuning successful tournaments and events from the previous year and creating new programs for the upcoming season. A wide range of programs will be offered this year, programs that will benefit players from young to old and beginner to expert. Communication is a critical element in the success of any undertaking and this is true of the golf operation as well. We will continue to use electronic media to keep the members up to date about upcoming events and specific details about those events. E-mail will be but one tool that will be used. The Boonsboro Country Club website will be the most complete source of your event information and details. Not only will you be able to learn of the events but you will be able to register for those events on line! Please “friend” the Boonsboro Country Club Facebook page as all our most recent and upcoming events will be posted on the site.

Thanks to help from PGA National Staff some new ideas will be incorporated into our junior programming as well as new instruction ideas for adults. Our Nine Hole League which was a great success last season should only get larger this year. The re-invented Match Play Tournament should continue to grow as well. A reminder that you should post a score for handicap anytime you play 7 holes or more. The handicap system will hold a nine hole score until you add an additional nine hole score. It doesn’t matter if you play the same nine twice, each nine has its own course and slope rating to make the proper calculation. It is your duty to post your scores. Congratulations to Jess Crumbley who scored his career 6th hole in one recently on the 143 yard 5th hole. Take heart all you golfers, Jess did not make his first hole in one until nearly 60 years of age! John Comninaki

The Junior Golf Season kicks off on Sunday, March 22. This year our kick-off event will feature a club fitting session to make sure your junior golfer or golfer to be has the proper equipment to play. Golf’s biggest thrill is “smashing” a drive. Like a big serve for an ace in tennis, or a slam dunk in basketball, it’s not the whole game but WOW it’s a great sensation! It’s important for juniors to get this sensation early and it’s critical that their golf clubs are the appropriate weight and length. Cutting down adult clubs for juniors mean the clubs will be too heavy and slow down the speed they are able to swing the club. Lighter clubs at the proper length will allow young players to swing with “Tour Tempo” and really increase their “smash” factor. US Kids Golf does a great job of providing the right equipment. Our trained professional staff will be there to get it right! We will review the upcoming program for the 2015 season, including the Boonsboro Junior Golf Association. The Junior Golf Association will continue its most successful programs with “Boonsboro Bucks”, a new team approach and “Parent Ride Along” privileges. The fee for BJGA membership is $35.00 for the first child and $15.00 for each additional child in the family. BJGA membership is for junior golfers age 9 -17. The Parent Ride Along Program will allow the junior player to ride with a parent or guardian at no charge for the use of the cart. The kickoff event will also highlight the PGA Junior League, one our most successful junior concepts ever! We ask the parents to attend as well as the juniors. Interested children age 5 and over are encouraged to attend. Please call the golf shop to register your attendance.

Junior Lesson Packages for 2015 US Kids Top 50 Golf Instructor John Comninaki, PGA will be offering lesson packages for the 2015 golf season. Five lessons will be offered for the price of four and can be split among multiple players to create a clinic environment. Each Friday beginning March 27th there will be a Drop in Clinic for children ages 5-8 and Junior Team Play for children 9-13. The Clinics and Junior Team play will be 45 minutes long. Space is very limited on our practice areas so it is critical that we know how many will be attending each clinic session. Please call by noon to let us know your child/children will be attending. Clinic Dates and Team Day ● March 27 ● April 3, 17, 24 ● May 8, 15, 22 ● June 5, 12, 19, 26 ● July 3, 17, 24, 31 ● August 21, 28 ● September 4, 11, 18 Juniors between the ages of 9-13 will be divided into teams of 3-4 players. Each week the teams will play against one another in a fun and low pressure captain’s choice format. Teams will receive special team “uniforms” and get to select their team names.

If you are reluctant to purchase clubs not knowing if your child will show an interest in the game, we can provide rental clubs that will properly fit your junior golfer for $25.00 per month. Rental fees can be applied to purchase of the rental sets. Lost or damaged clubs will be charged back to your account at the BCC member price.

Racquet Round Up Drew Robinson USPTA Professional, Director of Tennis

I hope everyone will take advantage of a new spring season to become motivated and excited about tennis, exercise and our wonderful club. Living an active lifestyle playing tennis, swimming or golf is a tremendous benefit to your health. Do not forget to enjoy a meal at the club after you play pickleball, tennis or TRX in the grille restaurant or let us order you a meal to go! The tennis shop or deck is always available for a meal as well. Once again, we have had a great indoor season with 53 adult contract blocks (equaling 275 adult players) and much walk on play. Behind the Greens Steve Vessells Greens Superintendent

This year’s Bourbon and Branchwater will be held on Saturday, March 21st. Hopefully we will have a great sunny and warm day. This is usually a great way to start the year out and have a good time and some good food. Sign up early and hopefully we will have some good weather before then, so that we can all get some rounds in and maybe even a little practice in before the 21st. Following the Bourbon and Branchwater, on Monday the 23rd and Tuesday the 24th we have scheduled our springtime greens aerification and top-dressing. We have decided to go a little earlier this year and not do it in May, like we have been doing for the last couple of years. Doing this earlier in the year keeps this operation out of the heart of the spring season. We will be using a medium sized tine, about ½ an inch, and will then come back with a healthy application of topdressing. The only negative is that it could take a while for the greens to heal. The weather will play a big role in the recovery, obviously the warmer the better. The BWGA will have their Golf Luncheon on Tuesday, March 17th and then things will really start to heat up in April. Clinics, Demo Days and club events begin to happen. Opening Day for the BWGA will be Thursday, April 2nd and the Ladies Nine Hole group will begin play on

Tuesday, April 7th. Masters Saturday will be the 11th and the Senior Men will host Wintergreen here on the 15th. If the weather cooperates we will be getting up to speed with our course conditioning. Our Greens management will once again be a combination of mowing and/or rolling six to seven days a week with a light topdressing or “dusting” when time and weather permit. Fairways, tees and approaches will be mowed two to three times per week depending on temperatures and rainfall. The majority of our rough will be mowed once per week with some high traffic and fast growing areas being mowed twice per week. Bunker raking and changing cups will be dictated by the weather and amount of play that we have. As a general rule, we completely rake the bunkers three to four times each week and we might spot rake trafficked areas more frequently. As we all know, April can be a great month to play golf and to work on the course. Golfers games start to come around from the winter layoff and the course generally gets better as the weeks go by and we are able to mow more often and groom the playing surfaces. I hope everybody comes out and enjoys the course and the practice facilities, weather you are a seasoned veteran or a beginner, Think Golf!

Steve Vessells

The picture on the left was taken in February. It doesn't look too bad for that time of year! However; knowing the picture on the right is what we will be looking at as soon as the course gets the ole golf juices flowing makes it hard to look at the left picture!

Calling all Blue Marlins! Now that we’ve had our fair share of wintry weather, it’s time to start thinking warm thoughts. Please make sure those thoughts include coming out for swim team this summer. We’re aiming for another great season, and we cannot do it without you! We are excited to have Patrick Frankfort back as head coach of our Blue Marlins. He has been busy again this winter as head coach of the E.C. Glass swim team. In addition to Patrick, we are fortunate to have an awesome group of assistant coaches. As always, we cannot make the swim meets happen without the help of our amazing parents. We are in need of some Referees and Stroke & Turn Judges. If you are interested in becoming certified in either, or if you have any questions, please let me know.
