Mrs Pearce, Miss Wardrop and I visited St Mary's School Tove in Ghana last year. St John's School has been supporting the children at this school for 9 years. Mrs Zimmerman, our new head teacher from September started the fundraising in 1993.

FUNDRAISING FOR GHANA St John’s Church and St John’s School have been fundraising for an area of Ghana since 2004. The school specifically raised money for the building of a new school. The children at St John the Evangelist have raised more than £6000 since we began the project. Building was slow initially. The rainy seasons make roads impassable. Eventually the children moved into the classrooms and they no longer have to go home during the middle of the day when it rains.

On our visit in February 2009 Mrs Pearce and I received a warm and noisy welcome from the parents and children. The welcome from the parents and children at the school in Tove was magnificent.

Between us we were able to share very special occasions with Bishop Matthias and his family - a family wedding, christening and the ordination of some priests. We were warmly welcomed into his home and treated like VIPs .

Tove 2010 Much work is still to be done and in 2010 our gift went someway to provide uniforms for the children at St Mary’s Tove. Sixty uniforms were presented to the children ready for going back to school in September 2010 .

February 2011 On our second visit to Ghana, Mrs Pearce and I had more adventures. On this occasion Miss Wardrop came with us. It was a very busy time with long hot days but also an amazing experience. On this trip, we were welcomed as part of Bishop Matthias family enjoying the Bishop's 50th birthday celebrations, a visit to the salt pans, the Volta lake and a number of church services. We also attended a funeral. Some of the things we saw were amazing- each day bringing new and unknown experiences and images which will stay with us for ever.I have added some photographs which the children have all seen.

Christmas 2012/2013 The gifts from our children were well received and the school teachers sent their messages of appreciation. The school role at St Mary's in Tove is rising again with well over a hundred children between 4 - 11. The support for the children at St Mary's School is an ongoing project. We do not fundraise too often but as new children and families come to St John's School we like to start again. I am hoping to visit Ghana again in the near future and transfer more funds to support the children's education. I hope that all new parents will support us in this important link with another global community. We will be working with our children to introduce them to our friends. Citizenship is a very important part of the curriculum. We want our children to be aware of their place in the local and global community. We hope to bring two groups of children closer together and develop a shared understanding of how we can reach out to other parts of our world.

Please support the children over the half term holiday with their sponsorship activities.
