FRIARS CARSE

Classic Hotels

This original ‘Frierskerse’ was established as a friary back in the 13th century, close to the present-day ‘Friars Carse’. The property became home to the Riddell family and named ‘Glenriddell’, with Robert Burns, the celebrated Scottish poet, as a regular house guest.

Set in a 45 acre estate including woodland extending to the banks of the River Nith, the hotel, with its elegant staircase, offers guests a warm welcome with a well-furnished spacious lounge with views over the garden and river, and a comfortable bar. There is also a lift to all floors.

The property passed through many hands before becoming home to Dr James Crichton (better known as the ‘Admirable Crichton’) in 1809. Re-modelled in 1873, the house was once more named ‘Friars Carse’ in 1895, and established as a hotel in 1938.

The 21 en suite bedrooms have remote control colour television with Freeview and radio, direct dial telephone, WiFi internet access, hairdryer and hospitality tray.

WATERHEAD

Classic Hotels

In its early days, the Waterhead frequently welcomed the illustrious Victorian artist and social critic, John Ruskin, as a guest. Ruskin’s home, Brantwood, lies just across the lake and many of his visitors (including Charles Darwin) would stay as guests at the Waterhead. Coniston has a long association with notable figures: Tennyson spent his honeymoon here, Turner painted the mountains, Arthur Ransome used Coniston Water as the setting for Swallows and Amazons and Donald Campbell died while attempting the world water speed record.

Leisure The Lake District is a favourite spot for those who enjoy the outdoors, with activities including walking, climbing, waterskiing, sailing and cycling. Coniston Water, with the ‘Old Man’ towering above

at 803m, offers a variety of lake activities and the area offers excellent walking to suit all abilities. For those who prefer a gentler pace, there are lake cruises and a wealth of historic houses to visit such as Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount at nearby Grasmere, both former homes of Wordsworth, and Beatrix Potter’s home at Sawrey, inspiration for many of the characters in her enchanting children’s books. At Brantwood, John Ruskin’s home, above Coniston Water, offers you an insight into the life of this influential writer.
