Eliot started painting when he started architecture school in 1955. In the beginning, architecture informed much of his painting. Five years ago, Eliot joined a group that met every week at Greg McHuron’s studio to draw from a live model. He has also been attending life drawing sessions at the Art Association. Ink-wash has become Eliot’s preferred drawing medium because it’s “unchangeable once down on paper; when diluted it provides a very wide range of values from almost imperceptible to impressively black; it flows; it can be very tight or very loose. All of this brings tremendous pleasure to the user and hopefully also the viewer,” he notes. This collection of three dozen drawings was chosen from more than 200 that he has saved in recent years.

Jean Laughton My Ranching Life

Artspace Loft Gallery June 3 – July 29, 2011 Opening Reception | Friday, June 3 | 5:30 – 7:30pm This ongoing photographic series offers an insider’s cinematic view from the saddle of Western South Dakota ranch life. In 2003, Jean Laughton left New York City, moving back home to the tiny Badlands town of Interior, South Dakota. What started as a photography project turned into an adventure when she began working on the Quarter Circle XL Ranch - learning all aspects of the cowboy lifestyle while photographing it from horseback. The resulting large-scale panoramic photographs are a document of present day cowboy life and her life ‘inside the photograph’.

These characters are childhood memories of the ultimate man – the dad every boy wants, the man every boy wants to grow up to be. Mark Newport’s hand-knit acrylic re-creations of these heroes’ costumes combine their heroic, protective, ultra masculine, yet vulnerable personas with the protective gestures of his mother. The costumes are life-size, wearable objects that hang limply on hangers challenging the standard muscular form of the hero and offering the space for the viewer to imagine themselves wearing the costume, becoming the hero. Artist and educator Mark Newport is the Artist-in-Residence and Head of Fiber at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

These images are a personal and quiet observation of daily life at this factory. www.taylorglennphoto.com

David Klaren and Amy Unfried Orchestrated Line

Artspace Theater Gallery August 5 – September 12, 2011 Closing Reception Palettes and Palates | September 9 | 5:30 – 7:30pm The sticks that Amy chooses for her tree sculptures are carefully and specifically considered. Her sculptures have a theatrical, vignette quality to them. In David Klaren’s drawings, the scribbled lines at first seem chaotic and random, but the randomness coalesces, forming a powerful and recognizable reverse silhouette image. In both of their works, the seeming randomness of the lines is orchestrated to meet their specific ideas and concepts.

Kathryn Mapes Turner The valley of Jackson Hole is indeed inspiring, but the dramatic landscape can also be a lot for an artist to take on. Learn from award-winning native painter and Western Visions artist, Kathryn Mapes Turner, a proven approach to painting this unique landscape. In this day-long plein air workshop you will learn how to select your composition, block in general masses and paint values that capture the fleeting light. Turner will share tips that make outdoor painting a joyful and satisfying experience. www.turnerfineart.com

‘Let’s Play’ is based on the idea of having fun painting, of getting rid of the anxiety and fear we can have about our performance as artists. We all worry about whether our paintings will turn out or not. I find that when we try our best but do not worry about making a masterpiece, that we can experiment and play, and surprise surprise, our paintings have a much better chance of success. The worst that can happen is we wipe the painting off. Day 1: We will walk to a location and make a study. Day 2: First thing we will have a critique of yesterday’s paintings, what works, what could be better. We will walk to a different location and make two more studies. Students will need to have painting equipment and be prepared for a short hike during this 2-day workshop at Lee’s home. All interested painters are welcome to work in watercolor or oil. Beginners are encouraged to join this class and may bring drawing supplies instead of paint. Learn about the plein air process and what type of gear is needed for painting. www.leeriddell.com

Portrait of an Art Association Member:

Brigit Derosa

Although she will always be a self proclaimed “east coast city girl” at heart, Brigit Derosa first visited Jackson in 2009 and has never left. During the summer of 2010 she began teaching Art Association summer camps. Since then she has started teaching the youth and outreach programs as a full time instructor. Having earned her BFA in Fibers at the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2005, Brigit has brought a fresh new feel to the Art Association education. Her passion for weaving and art is influenced by her closeknit connection with her family in Georgia. She is truly a unique individual who has become a new member to The Art Association family. Her newly found passion for working at the Art Association and pARTners has made Jackson her home away from home. How has The Art Association affected you or your family’s artistic development? The ArtSpot

is Located on Hwy 89 in front of JH Whitewater and seen by an average of 30,000 people everyday. The ArtSpot, brainchild of Bland Hoke III, is a kinetic sculpture created from a repurposed chairlift tower donated by the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Designs reflective of Jackson’s natural environment are torch-cut into the steel. The structure pivots horizontally to enable artists to install site-specific installations safely from the ground.

Jackson’s Center of Wonder is handing off its ArtSpot to the Art Association on May 1st. The Art Association will be administrating the artwork proposal process, the selection committee and artwork installation.
