He formerly was Senio r Editor of the University Medical Magazine in 1891 and 1892, an d edited the "Life of D . Hayes Agnew," published in 1892 . I n recent years has contributed numerous magazine articles to th e Century, Harper's, Leslie's Weekly and Monthly, North America n Review, Era, Cosmopolitan, Godey ' s, and Peterson ' s . He was appointe d Assistant Demonstrator of Anatomy in the Medical Departmen t of the University of Pennsylvania, and was also Quiz Master o n general Anatomy and Osteology in the Medical Institute o f Philadelphia in 1893, and in 1895 was Quiz Master on Applie d and Surgical Anatomy in the same institute . He is a membe r of the Philadelphia Medical Emergency Corps, one of the Polic e Surgeons, as well as Honorary Member of the Police Pensio n Fund Association of Philadelphia . In addition to membership in the local medical associations he has been President of th e Northwest Medical Society . He is Medical Director of a Mexican life insurance company and Chief Medical Examiner for the Ne w York Life-Insurance Company at the present time . Is Assistan t Surgeon to the National Railway of Mexico . He states that he lives in the most charming climate in the world, among ma gnifcet scenery and in a progressive country, and he would be glad to have his classmates come to spend a summer's vacatio n in the City of Mexico, where he guarantees them a good time . FRENCH gave up the practice of medicine shortl y after graduation and has been engaged in business of one kin d or another since that time . As far as can be ascertained the total weight of the 81 men a t graduation was 11,660 pounds . This has now been run up to 12 ,935 pounds, a gain of 1275 pounds, or a little over half a ton . At graduation Hileman was our lightest weight, 105, while h e now tips the beam at 108 and still remains the lightest weigh t heard from . Rawlins was probably the heaviest man in the clas s at graduation ; he now refuses to state exactly what his weigh t was at that time . Kulp was probably a close second at 194, yet at the present time Umsted is the heavy weight of the class , tipping the beam at 215 pounds . The man who has gained most in weight since graduation is C . L . Miller, of Lebanon, who ha s jumped from 116 to 184 pounds . Miller, however, has not bee n leading the strenuous life of the practising physician, but ha s 43

engaged in business . George G . E . Neuber, however, pushes hi m pretty hard, for he has gained or pounds, weighing at graduatio n 123 pounds, while he now weighs 184 . Quantity of Hair . Twenty-eight of the men acknowledge that they are bald, mor e or less ; 15 have beards ; 55 wear mustaches only ; while 11 ar e clean shaven . Means of Transportation. Thirty-three men walk ; 36 drive ; 15 use automobiles ; and 3 utilize the bicycle to see their patients . Kulp states that he doe s "everything but fly ." Some few of the class utilize a combination of methods, such as horses and bicycle, or automobile and horses . Insurance. Fifty-nine men are insured, mainly for the protection of thei r families . Hobbies . Nineteen of the men either state they have not a hobby or fai l to answer this question . There is a remarkable diversity of sentiment among the rest, as the following figures will show : Hunting and fishing is preferred by 6 ; music and photography by 5, each ; 5 delight in horses ; reading, 3 ; the flowers, the "woods and fields," "sleeping," farming, travelling, mechanics, whist, and theatres, each 2 ; the following hobbies are ridden by but one man : sailorizing, yachting, poker, fruit growing, "forgetting medicine, " wheat growing, camping, automobiling, American archaeology , real estate, writing, smoking, ping-pong, drug business, "hi s baby," biology, and "the inside . " Exercise . The exercise indulged in is almost as variegated as the hobbies ridden . Twenty-two men prefer walking ; 13 horseback ; 10 tak e no exercise ; 6 prefer golf and tennis respectively ; 4 bicycling ; 3 gymnastics ; bowling, 2 ; while billiards, base-ball, canoeing , farming, driving, sparring, swimming, rowing, squash tennis, an d swoboda each have one devotee . of exercise are also mentioned : " reading," " thinking," "sleeping, " "rest," "running up stairs," 1 each. Are Physicians Contented with their Lot ? Notwithstanding its responsibilities, cares, and anxieties 59 me n state that they are satisfied with their profession ; 14 of them are doubtful about it ; while 3 bluntly acknowledge that they are no t at all satisfied with their lot in life . Post-Graduate Work. Thirty-nine of the men have done post-graduate work of one kind or another ; 40 have not . Fifty-eight of the class have returne d at some time since graduation to the University ; 17 have not visited their Alma Mater, while 5 have made no reply to thi s question . Criticisms on Teaching, Past and Present . But few critical remarks are made . Three or four men stil l have a feeling of rancor in their hearts toward Pop Wormley an d say they had too much of him . Several men complain bitterly of the poor ventilation, etc ., during the lecture hours in the old Medical Hall, and one man suggests that money and not brain s is the requisite for a chair in the present faculty . The rest co the present methods of teaching — mainly clinical and clasnsider s room, with the minimum of didactic lecturing — a distinct advanc e over the teaching in '89 . A large proportion of the class, 66 in fact, either had no criticisms to make or did not reply to thi s question . Who Wrote the Letter ? The guessing contest resulted as follows : No guess, 49 ; Scott , 14 ; Posey, 4 ; Stengel, 3 ; Tunis, Toulmin, Adams, and Carpenter, 2 each ; Kneass, Boger, and Tyson, 1 each . The letter was originally drafted by J . Howe Adams and som e few minor corrections and suggestions were made by the Co mite in general . The questions were suggested by J . A . BROOKE, BENJAMIN . Born at Radnor, Delaware Co ., Pa ., October 17, 1866. Died October 18, 1900 .

Preliminary education received at Boys' High School, Sa n Francisco . Took Sophomore year at University of Californi a College of Chemistry. After graduation was Resident Physicia n at the Philadelphia Hospital and was appointed First Lieutenan t and Assistant Surgeon in the United States Army, May 4, 1891 . After passing his army examinations he was assigned to duty i n the West, where he saw five years of active service as Assistant Surgeon and Post Surgeon at several important forts . While stationed at Fort Canby at the mouth of the Columbia River, he contracted a severe cold as the result of rescuing a shipwrecke d crew and passengers . He developed pneumonia and this led to other complications in his health, which finally obliged him to retire from active service about two and a half years before hi s death, with the rank of Captain and Assistant Surgeon . He was unmarried . Brooke was an unusually pleasant, frank, and agreeable man . He was buried in the historic churchyard at Old St . David's Church, in Radnor Township, Pa ., where a number of his ance lie. stor CASHMAN, NATHANIEL A .

Graduated with our class and after receiving his diplom a entered into practice in Philadelphia . He paid some attention , it is reported, to nasal and throat work . He did not reply to the history blank sent out at our Tenth Reunion ; so we have no 47

definite statistics in regard to him . For various reasons, however , he made himself known from time to time to many of his clas in Philadelphia. His health became much broken ansmate d he finally died from the effects of tuberculosis . The date of hi s death is unknown ; he was married . CROSS, GEORGE DANIEL . Born at Antwerp, Jefferson Co ., N . Y ., June 3, 1852 . Died at Chester, Pa., August 8, 1903 .

Was educated at the public schools . After graduation engage d in the practice of ophthalmology in Philadelphia and Chester. For several years he did work at the Wills Eye and St . Clement Hospitals, Philadelphia, and was Ophthalmologist to the Cheste r Hospital . For a number of years before his death he suffere d from the effects of general arterial and aortic valvular disease . He married Rhoda Esther Howard, and is survived by his wife and three children . FOWLER, CHARLES C .

After graduation but little is known of Fowler . Through some source it has reached us that several years after leaving th e University he developed trouble with his lungs and went to Los Angeles, California, for the benefit of his health, and subsequentl y died there . GALLOWAY, ALBERT BOLLES . Born in Philadelphia, October 14, 1866 . Died in Philadelphia, April 14, 1891 .

Preliminary education at Central High School, Philadelphia. After graduation served as Resident Physician to the Philadelphi a Hospital . Subsequently was Physician on the Red Star Line . His health became impaired first by an acute laryngitis, and h e died, presumably from acute pneumonic phthisis, on the above date ; unmarried . GERLACH, E . RUDOLPH .

After graduation entered into general practice at Trenton, N . J . The date of his death is uncertain . He is stated to have died fro m the effects of a brain tumor. 48

HOWERTER, EMANUEL L . Born at Longswamp, Berks Co ., Pa ., July 15, 1863 . Died in March, 1904 .

Received degree of B .A . from Keystone State Normal School at Kutztown, Pa ., and studied the Languages and Sciences a t Campbell University in Kansas . After graduation engaged i n practice at Stony Run, Pa ., where he paid some special attention to diseases of the nervous system . Information received from hi s brother just as the history goes to press states that he died wit h lobar pneumonia about two months ago . MILNOR, WILLIAM S .

After graduation became Resident with other men in his clas s at the Philadelphia Hospital . During the first six months of hi s stay at the hospital he developed influenza, followed by a purulen t pericarditis . He was under the care of Dr . William Pepper an d was operated upon for the relief of pericardial effusion by Dr . John Deaver . He died shortly after the operation . PATRICK, WILLIAM S .

Nothing has been discovered regarding Patrick subsequent t o graduation . Neither the time nor the cause of his death hav e been ascertained . SNYDER, ELMER R .

But little is known with regard to Snyder subsequent to graduation . He came to Philadelphia some time before his death , which occurred on March 16, 1898, from dysentery, at the Un Hospital . iversty TAYLOR, HARRY BURNETT. Born in Philadelphia, May 14, 1850 .

Prepared for college at the Hancock Grammar School an d Henry D . Gregory's Classical School . Attended the College o f Pharmacy from 1867 to 1869, where he received his Ph .G . Gra duate with our class in 1889. He was Coroner's Physician of Philadelphia, was a member of the County Medical Society an d the D . Hayes Agnew Surgical Society. While serving as Coroner' s 49

Physician he received an infected wound, which caused his death . He died on December 17, 1901 ; unmarried . WEISS, GEORGE LIVINGSTON . Born at Schaefferstown, Pa., February 15, 1868 . Died February 2, 1 898 .

Received preliminary education at the Palatinate College , Myerstown, Pa . After graduation practised in Lebanon, Phi and subsequently at Schaefferstown . He married Laura ladephi, Miles and had one child . There has always been some mystery surrounding his death ; he was found unconscious in the roa d near Schaefferstown and died shortly after being brought to hi s home . There was a suspicion of foul play . WHALEY, BENTON H .

Nothing has been ascertained with regard to Whaley subsequen t to graduation . Neither the time nor the cause of his death ha s been discovered .

DECENNIAL REUNION . The Decennial Reunion of our class was held at the University Club, June 15, 1889, almost exactly five years ago to-day . Th e dinner began quietly and rapidly progressed with increasing nois e into a wild western cyclone, for which Small and Gillespie were especially responsible . Stengel presided as Toast Master an d his fluency was such that on the following day he had completel y lost all recollection of what he had said on the previous evening . Posey responded to the Toast of the University ; a History of the Class was read by Scott ; Stitt spoke for the Army and Navy ; Davis told bad stories about the specialists, and all the member s of the class he could pull in ; Adams responded for the class in Literature ; McFarlan for the Medical Faculty ; and Harry L a Motte for the Rough Riders. He also gave an imitation of ho w they sang "There Will be a Hot Time in the Old Town To-night " before Santiago . You may recall at that time that of the 128 men graduating, 101 responded to the circular letters distributed by the Committee . No responses were received from 11, while 8 of the men had died .
