INTRODUCTION On Monday 7th September 2015, 40 brave men and women abseiled three of the City of London’s most iconic buildings; 30 St Mary Axe, The Leadenhall Building and 20 Fenchurch Street – otherwise known as The Gherkin, The Cheesegrater and The Walkie-Talkie. This ground-breaking challenge was held in aid of The Outward Bound Trust and The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, and was facilitated by the world renowned expertise of The Royal Marines. This record breaking event brought together some of The City’s biggest and most philanthropic individuals and organisations, joining forces to achieve something truly remarkable. It is with immense pride that we can now confirm that the total raised from the City Three Peaks is £2m - an absolutely transformational amount for both charities involved.

We are delighted to share how these invaluable funds will impact upon the ways the two beneficiary charities carry out their work, and the individuals it will support as a result.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in the event, and we do hope that you will enjoy reading about the fantastic legacy of the City Three Peaks.

THE BUILDINGS 180M

160M

30 St Mary Axe

30 St Mary Axe, widely known as ‘The Gherkin’ is situated on the former site of the Baltic Exchange. Whilst The Gherkin isn’t the tallest structure in the City at 180m (4th tallest in the City of London) it stands for significance as an iconic landmark which is synonymous with London and its skyline. Originally owned by Swiss Re, the building was purchased by Safra in 2014, and is run by CBRE.

20 Fenchurch Street

20 Fenchurch Street, or ‘The WalkieTalkie’, was jointly developed by Land Securities and Canary Wharf Group, and stands at just over 160m tall. Designed by architect Rafael Vinoly, the building spectacularly flares outward from a narrow base, and is home to the hugely popular Sky Garden restaurant and bars, offering some of the best skyline views in London.

224M

The Leadenhall Building

The Leadenhall Building, which at 224m is the tallest building in the City of London, was developed by British Land and Oxford Properties, and is often referred to as “The Cheesegrater”. The building has fast become a symbol of London, and an identifying mark on the London skyline, thanks to the world renowned architecture of Graham Stirk of Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners.

T H E I M PA C T The Outward Bound Trust The Outward Bound Trust is experiencing an incredibly exciting period of growth, having recently acquired a new centre in Wales, as well as undergoing a spectacular £3.4m development of our Ullswater centre in the Lake District. The funds raised by The City Three Peaks abseil will allow for our Ullswater development to finally be completed, catapulting The Trust to deliver the highest tier of outdoor education in the country.

The money raised from the abseil will also allow us to continue to grow as an organisation, enabling The Trust to invest in another new centre – helping us to reach more young people than we have ever been able to before. The support will also provide a greater level bursary funding to the most disadvantaged young people in the UK, to attend our life changing courses in the outdoors.

Our residential programmes really do make an impact: 90% of participants agreed that they now feel more confident in their abilities to reach the goals that they set for themselves. 80% of parents reported an increase in their child’s confidence, independence and maturity.

68% of teachers observed improved performance in the classroom just one month after the course.

Below is an unsolicited, handwritten letter that was handed to a teacher by one of our course participants, a few weeks after her Outward Bound course at our Aberdovey centre in Wales for 5 days with her school, a tough, innercity comprehensive in a urban area of East London. Crystal was so moved by the course and the experience had such an effect on her, that she felt compelled to write this - which we think speaks volumes about how powerful one of our residential experiences really is for the individuals who participate on our programmes.

There will be many more of these success stories, as a result of the bursary funding generated by the City Three Peaks. We are incredibly grateful to all of our participants, donors and generous supporters of the City Three Peaks, and to all those who allowed for this fantastic event to take place.

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity Robert Robson, CEO of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, said that the City Three Peaks fundraising will enable the charity to support adventurous training projects such as the British Services Medical Research Expedition to the Himalayas in 2016, led by the Royal Navy, and will contribute to the wider work it does to provide support to the serving and retired community. “We focus our giving to where it really matters, whether it’s to our men and women at sea or to put a smile on the faces of their families. This work is incredibly broad from supporting holiday activities for the children of serving families, to family social gatherings to make life that bit easier for our servicemen and women.” Robert Robson, CEO. The British Services’ Dhaulagiri Medical Research Expedition 2016 (BSDMRE), supported by The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, will see an adventurous tri-service climbing team, backed by City Three Peaks funding, attempting to scale the Dhaulagiri massif in Nepal, which at 8,167m is the world’s 7th highest mountain. The Joint Services’ Mountaineering Committee (JSMC), made up of 9 Royal Navy and Royal Marines, 9 Army and 6 RAF personnel, will take on the jaunt under testing conditions: in a lightweight style and without supplementary oxygen.

The aim is to develop personnel mentally and physically by operating at the extremes of physical possibility in the most austere of environments. Additional aims are to develop future military mountaineers with an ascent of Tukuche peak (6,920m), to involve injured Servicemen and women involved in the ‘battle back’ programme and to conduct research into aspects of lowlanders acclimatising to high altitude during a trek around the Dhaulagiri circuit. It follows the last quadrennial expedition, which took place in Antarctica in 2012, while 2008’s expedition saw the successful ascent of Makalu, the world’s 5th highest mountain.

“The City Three Peaks Challenge was an extraordinary day. Brave and generous people helped two charities really make a difference. We are immensely grateful to those who were inspired to take part.” Robert Robson, CEO.

Thank you so much

To all those who generously supported the City Three Peaks – an incredible, record breaking event, with an amazing outcome for two very deserving causes.
