History of Camrose The area around Camrose was first settled about 1900. Prior to this, a mission and trading post had been established by Father Bellevaire along the Battle River about six miles south of Camrose in an area known as Duhamel. The trading post was located on the North West Mounted Police Trail from Edmonton to Regina. The original Mission Church built in 1893 has been restored and preserved as a historical site. The City of Camrose began originally as the Hamlet of Sparling, so named after the Reverend Dr. Sparling of Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was incorporated as the Village of Sparling on May 4, 1905. Because the name Sparling was often confused with the towns of Sparling and Stirling in Western Canada, the Village Council, in 1906, changed the name to Camrose. The village was incorporated as the town of Camrose in December of 1906, and to the status of a city on January 1, 1955. The original townsite was located on the SW ¼ of Section 2, Township 47, Range 20, west of the 4th meridian. Stoney Creek flowed through this quarter section of land and the natural woodland on the banks of the creek are now the centre of the city and have been developed into beautiful parks and recreation areas for the use and enjoyment of the citizens of the city and surrounding area. In the original survey of the townsite, the main street of 100-foot width came into being largely through the farsighted planning of the pioneer citizen Francois Adam, generally referred to today as the “Father of Camrose.” His foresight is such in evidence today, as the main street of Camrose is a great source of pride to the local citizenry. Its “uncluttered” look due to its width, combined with the orderly development throughout the city, has resulted in Camrose earning the enviable reputation of being one of the cleanest cities in western Canada. In June 1905, the Canadian Pacific Railway grade was completed, linking Edmonton and Winnipeg, via Camrose. Today the city is fortunate in having both major railways, the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific, providing excellent rail facilities to business and industry.

Camrose and District Centennial Museum Take a trip back in time and visit Camrose and District Centennial Museum. Officially opened on July 1, 1967, it has since been a favorite destination for visitors and residents. Centrally located two blocks south of Highway 13 (48 Avenue) on 53 Street (opposite St. Mary’s Hospital), this museum is the home of thousands of artifacts displayed in a variety of settings. Buildings such as the Fire Hall, The Canadian (the local newspaper), R.C.M.P. Machine Building, the Blacksmith Shop, Oldtimers’ Hut, Mona Sparling Building, Likeness School, St. Dunstan’s Church, and the Pioneer Home are proudly on display within the museum grounds and are open to the public. Canada Day (July 1) and Machinery Day (the third Sunday in September) are annual events at the museum with lots to see and do for the whole family.

Camrose Railway Station and Park From Saturday of the long weekend in May until Saturday of the long weekend in September, enjoy Camrose Railway Station and Park. The station and historic site buildings and gardens are open Monday through Saturday. The tea room can be booked for group lunches. All donations and food sales profits go directly into the station and site maintenance, restoration and historic programming.

Performing Arts A Performing Arts Centre in Camrose

Our Vision

The Camrose area has a long history of participation in – and support for – the performing arts. From piano recitals at the turn of the century and vaudeville shows at the Bailey Theatre in the 1920s, all the way to the live theatre for children and large scale dance productions of the present, the residents of Camrose and the surrounding area have loved performing – and have appreciated – the arts.

Our vision is of a home for the performing arts in the Camrose region. Each partner has signed a firm commitment that the facility will be available to the entire community: school groups, community members, university faculty and students, as well as visitors to the area, will be welcome. With this vision comes the need for support from others who are committed to the arts, to the area’s growth and development, and to the benefits that an artistic experience brings to both performer and observer.

This long-time love affair with drama, art, music and dance has resulted in a multitude of Camrose spaces used as venues. These offer various options for both arts groups and audiences, but none were designed to accommodate full-stage performances. In fact, Camrose and Wetaskiwin community groups have had to travel to Leduc in order to perform for families and friends.

The Performing g Arts Centre will add to the quality q y and vitality of the community experience. Within n Camrose and across the surrounding region, n, it will help attract people and investments, nvestments, contributing to the e area’s reputation as an exciting citing and dynamic mic place to live, work and raise a family. ily.

A Partnership for the Performing Arts The Government of Alberta, the City of Camrose, Camrose County and the University of Alberta have a joint vision for the Camrose Performing Arts Centre. It will be a state-of-theart facility where local citizens, students, and faculty will come together, not only as audience members, but as artists and performers. The magnificent building will complement existing arts facilities within the City. As part of the agreement, it will be available to community groups, visiting performers and students for both classes and performance space. The Camrose Performing Arts Centre will be a monument to the importance of culture in community stability and growth, specifically in rural Alberta.

The Great Camrose Outdoors

Swan Program Th Cit The City off C Camrose is i considered id d by b many as one of the most beautiful cities on the prairies, boasting an exceptional quality of life for both citizens and visitors. Our community takes pride in our exceptional surroundings and extensive outdoor spaces and trails. Camrose is fortunate to have tremendous natural spaces throughout our beautiful city. A variety of developed green space areas are thoughtfully placed throughout the community, allowing residents and visitors of all ages to enjoy many exciting activities during all four seasons. Natural corridors provide a picturesque backdrop for the city’s Urban Park System, over 30 km of interconnected, paved multi-use trails and many other shale passages for running or walking your dog. The area offers the opportunity to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature as the trails offer an outstanding natural setting for hikers and mountain bikers. A variety of wildlife species inhabit the area and some areas of the Park System offer the opportunity to observe the habitat and lifestyle of the beaver. Playgrounds connected to the trail system provide play spaces and structures for families at all stages and ages throughout various neighbourhoods in the City. An off-leash area provides space for dog owners to allow their pets to move about freely for exercise and socialization with other dogs and people.

In 1962, the first swans made their way to Camrose – a pair of graceful Polish Mutes affectionately known as “Hal” and “Faxi” were donated by the City of Halifax and made their home on Mirror Lake for many years. Five decades later, Camrose is still very well-known for its beautiful landscapes, complimented by picturesque swans on local waters. Camrose continues to maintain close relationships with both the Canadian Wildlife Service and Friends of Elk Island Park Society, participating in various swan education and conservation initiatives over the past several years. The City of Camrose often assists conservation efforts by welcoming orphan or injured birds to stay snug in our winter facilities. On warm summer days, families can be seen admiring the swans from the lakeshore and countless school children have done papers and created artwork about this topic. The citizens of Camrose take great pride and delight in their stewardship of these beautiful creatures that make their home on our waters. The City’s treasured birds, both Trumpeter and Mute swan varieties, are cared for year-round by dedicated City staff. The birds spend the winter in a state of the art indoor facility, during the months when ice is present on City waters.

Camrose Ski Club Camrose is fortunate to have some of the best cross country ski trails in Alberta, often used by the elite athletes of Canada’s national cross country and biathlon teams for training. Several members of the Camrose Ski Club and Augustana Vikings ski teams have gone on to compete at top levels, including the Olympic Games, world championships and World University Games. Camrose Ski Club provides a complete range of programming in cross country skiing, biathlon, snowboarding and luge. Camrose Ski Club hosts a number of events each year, from its annual Ole Uffda Loppett, to Alberta Cup provincial competitions. Camrose Ski Club owns and maintains equipment worth several hundred thousands of dollars from snowmobiles and grooming equipment, to biathlon targets and skiing equipment rented to participants in programs.
