The Royal Library Address Søren Kierkegaards Plads 1 DK-1219 Copenhagen Denmark http://www.kb.dk

.

The Royal Library is with its clean-cut lines and glittering polished surfaces one of the most significant architectural landmarks on the Copenhagen waterfront. Clad in black granite, the extension to the Royal Library is known as The Black Diamond. Situated in the historic heart of Copenhagen, the extension marks a radical shift from traditional library structure and accommodates a range of cultural facilities. Open and essentially democratic, the building includes scientific and literary institutions, exhibition rooms, a bookshop, a café and a restaurant, as well as a roof terrace and a hall for concerts, theatrical performances and conferences. The new library has seven storeys plus a basement. The solid black cube is divided in two by a vast glazed atrium housing the majority of public functions. This central space, affording panoramic views over the waterfront, also serves as a significant source of daylight which is dispersed throughout the building.

Opera House Address Ekvipagemestervej 10 DK - 1438 Copenhagen Denmark http://www.operaen.dk

.

Danish shipping magnate Mærsk McKinney Møller donated in 2004 personally the new Opera House, used by the Royal Theater, to the Danish state. The house is built at Holmen opposite Amalienborg Palace. At the front it is visually integrated in the harbor space. A 35 meter wide Arrival Plaza, covered by the 32 meter long cantilevered roof, welcomes the audience approaching by boat or from the wide harbor promenade. New 17 meter wide canals have been dug on both sides of the building to create an island for the Opera itself. The back of the building, designed as a lower building block, relates to the new apartment buildings in the area. The main entrance to the Opera House Foyer will be through revolving doors. The Main Stage, heart of the building, is concealed behind a golden maple shell, which appears to float in the Foyer. Balconies and walkways (aswell as the restaurant and terrace on the top) offer a sensational view of the harbour and the city.

Danish Jewish Museum Address Proviantpassagen 6 DK-1218 Copenhagen Denmark http://www.jewmus.dk/

.

The Jewish concept Mitzvah, "a good deed", is of central significance to Daniel Libeskind's architecture for the museum. The Hebrew word Mitzvah is literally stamped in the building: the letters in gigantic sizes form the walking area of the museum, in which the visitors move. Danish Jews were saved through the effort of their compatriots and neighbors during the tragic years of the war. In this way the Danish Jewish Museum differs from other European Jewish Museums, the history is manifested in the form, structure and light. The museum is located in the Royal Boat House built by King Christian IV, transformed into the Royal Library, and now shared with the Jewish Museum. The entrance lies in the courtyard, and is marked with ‘conversation spaces’, stones that appear to be lying around, random placed. The interior has a very Libeskind-like structure, in this case a theatre like décor for all material the museum collects, which can document significant aspects of Jewish life in Denmark.

Danish Architecture Centre Address Strandgade 27B 1401 Copenhagen Denmark http://www.dac.dk

.

Danish Architecture Centre was established in 1985 and since then it has been housed in this old renovated warehouse in Christianshavn. Danish Architecture Centre disseminates knowledge and visions about the architecture and building of the future. Through exhibitions, professional projects, seminars and conferences and various cultural events, we are not only an eye-opener to what architecture is, but we also participate in pushing the limits for what architecture can do. On a daily basis, approximately 40 employees work in DAC within four different teams: national and international projects, exhibitions, Copenhagen, and communications. Additionally, DAC has its own bookshop, café and conference centre.

Nykredit Headquarters Address Kalvebod Brygge 20 1780 Copenhagen Denmark

.

Nykredit's head office is one of the largest corporate buildings in Copenhagen and occupies an unparalleled location on the city's central waterfront. Across nine of its ten storeys, the complex is divided into two svelte office wings, separated by a spacious atrium. The structure is one large cubic volume of glass, steel and granite and stands as a gateway between water and city. The entrance level extends across the entire complex and incorporates the reception, art installations, lecture hall and a broad main staircase that leads up to the atrium, the building's heart. With its suspended meeting boxes and glazed lifts as well as transverse walkways and balcony floors, the space offers an aesthetically stimulating and inspirational working environment. The building's generically urban design relates to the promenade and neighbouring buildings and mediates the transition between city and harbour.

CPH LIVING Address Langebrogade Kaj 570 1411 Copenhagen Denmark http://www.cphliving.com

.

In the innermost part of the Port of Copenhagen, close to Kalvebod Bastion and the Langebro Bridge, is Copenhagen's first floating hotel. A former transport barge has been transformed into an exclusive hotel with twelve rooms, all of which benefit from the soft background music of lapping waves and fantastic views of the harbour and the city. CPH LIVING is the name of the hotel, which is also extremely sustainable in terms of energy consumption, as it uses energy from the water in the harbour to heat the hotel facilities. It is a fully automatic hotel, which in practice means that guests book and pay for rooms online and then receive a PIN code to use for checking in and out of the hotel. In other words, apart from cleaning staff, there is no one to disturb the guests. Breakfast is provided by the LIVA restaurant ship that is very conveniently berthed next to CPH LIVING. The barge hotel is the first of its kind in Copenhagen.

Tivoli Concert Hall Address Vesterbrogade 3 1630 Copenhagen Denmark http://www.tivoli.dk/composite-5772.htm

.

3XN won the prestigious competition for the renovation of Tivoli's concert hall. In a partnering process with contractor NCC and engineers Birch & Kropgboe, 3XN has restored the former glory of the concert hall and has created new buildings in the old garden. Focal point of the project is a new circular three-storey foyer with lounge, bar and outdoor café which gives a view of Tivoli. The foyer is light, transparent and modern, yet it keeps the 'Tivoli-spirit'. White lacquered, twisted alu strings create a joyful façade that catches and reflects the sun and Tivoli's many lamps at night. The 700 m2 pavilion is the new main entrance to the concert hall as well.

The Crystal Address Puggaardsgade / Hambrosgade 1562 Copenhagen Denmark

.

The Crystal reads as a transparent, geometrical, glazed form which, resting only on a single point and a single line, floats as a visually light, crystalline structure above the plaza. The building is intermediate between the city and the harbour, and harmonises with neighbouring buildings. On the southern side, it rises and creates space for the main entrance. From one corner, there is passage under the building and a clear view out towards Nykredit’s head office building, called the Glass Cube, and the harbour. The interior layout of the building has been designed for optimum functionality, flexibility and efficiency. The typical floor plan is disposed in a Z-shape around two atria, which ensures that all workstations are well lit and enjoy a view. The building’s multi-faceted glass façade reflects both daylight and the immediate surroundings, but also features an integrated sunscreen that allows the building to adapt to changing light conditions.

Sølvgade School Address Sølvgade 16 1307 Copenhagen Denmark

.

Sølvgades School is being extended to enable it to become a two-track school. A new school building of approximately 2,400 m² is being constructed in the existing school courtyard, while the listed school building from 1847 is being extended. The new, six-storey school building inclines in order to accommodate the surrounding housing blocks: both the tall houses in Klerkegade and the lower ones in Sølvgade. The school area is surrounded by an old green border hedge which embraces the entire campus. This will be replaced by a new glass fence, which will also be integrated into the ground floor of the new building. The building has been constructed in compliance with the latest guidelines for environmentally-friendly development issued by Copenhagen Municipality. The project has achieved environmental classification as a 'low-energy class 2' building, which means that its energy consumption does not exceed 68 kWh/m²/year.

Green Lighthouse Address Tagensvej 16 DK 2200 Copenhagen Denmark

.

Green Lighthouse is Denmark's first CO2 neutral public building and home to the Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen. The building's circular shape and the adjustable louvres of the façade mirror the course of the sun. The sun being the predominant source of energy is the overriding design concept behind the new building. Green Lighthouse is based on a whole new experiment with an energy concept, consisting of a supply combination of district heating, photovoltaics, solar-heating, cooling and seasonal storage. 70% of the reduction of the energy consumption is the direct consequence of architectural design. To achieve carbon neutrality, many green design features were incorporated to reduce energy use and provide a holistic and healthy indoor environment for students and faculty. The building itself was oriented to maximize its solar resources.

NOMA Lab Address Strandgade 93 1401 Copenhagen Denmark http://www.noma.dk

.

3XNs interior for NOMA Restaurant’s food lab unites the creative worlds of gastronomy and architecture in a modern expression of the Nordic aesthetic. As the number one ranked restaurant for two years in a row, the expectations for creative innovation at NOMA are higher than ever before. Therein lay the need for an inspiring ‘experimentarium’ where chefs could continue to take their skills further in the evolution and development of Nordic cuisine. The NOMA Lab has been an opportunity to experiment with digital design methods. "For the project, we developed a ‘living software’ which made it possible to send drawings direct to fabrication from the computer. It’s kind of similar to printing a text one has just typed – but instead we are printing furniture pieces," In practice, it meant that the interior was delivered as a three dimensional puzzle of over 5000 pieces that were assembled without the help of any carpenters.

4B Address Stokhusgade 4B 1317 Copenhagen Denmark

.

4B is an infill built in 2008 in the heart of Copenhagen. The project 4B consists of a slim structure of glass, a plaster gable and a light cladding of Tombac. From the ground to the fourth floor the building is facing north and south. The struc-ture is extruded from the street to the courtyard taking a cue in height from the tall adjacent red brick house and forming a white plaster wall against the 3 storey neigh-bouring house. From the 4th to 7th floor the building opens towards west and the Østre Anlæg park. The band clad with Tombac flows over the facades from the main entrance to the courtyard, breaking the scale to the historic urban context.

Kulturhus Nordvest Address Rentemestervej 76 2400 Copenhagen Denmark https://bibliotek.kk.dk/biblioteker/rentemestervej

.

The northwest area in Copenhagen is located between the lively and diverse urban neighborhood of Nørrebro and the villa neighborhoods at the edge of the city. Many people live and work in this multiethnic area. Yet, since the area is located in the vicinity to numerous entry roads, most Copenhageners only use Nordvest as passage when going in and out of the city by car. The Culture House and Library tries to help improve the identity of the area. It is designed to create a landmark and to provide a meeting point for the local community. The new culture house consists of 4 functions, stacked on top of each other like a series of golden books. Each "book" is a world of its own with individual interiors and furnishment. The spaces between are open zones for flexible use. The foyer and zone between the existing building and the extension act as an urban passage for the neighborhood. The concert hall is placed on top of the building. A powerful object that seems to defy gravity.

Pharma Science Building Address Nørre Allé 71 2100 Copenhagen Denmark http://www.pharmaschool.ku.dk

.

The Pharma Science Building is a new, modern laboratory building for the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences as part of the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health Sciences at the North Campus. The building is located in the University Park, with new and existing buildings connected by an atrium and indoor walkways and footbridges. Interdisciplinary research and innovative collaborations between institutes is made possible by providing new state-of-the-art certified laboratories and shared facilities in an open learning and research environment. The compact volume is sculpted with a twisted floorplan, which creates a more spacious atrium and provides more facade length within a limited building zone. The facades are a continuous 'skin' of tombak panels in a rhomboid pattern. The reptilian rhomboid pattern is inspired by the work with animals in the laboratories, and it is a friendly salute to the surrounding buildings having this pattern as a part of their characteristic detailing.
