For more information on Catalyst 6500 series forwarding and switch fabric architecture, see the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Switch Data Sheet section titled: How Cisco Express Forwarding Works. Superior Traffic Management and Queuing Characteristics of Catalyst 6500 series 10 Gigabit Ethernet Modules The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series 10 Gigabit Ethernet modules support multiple queues per port for Quality of Service. Each port supports Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED) for congestion avoidance within each queue, and Weighted Round Robin (WRR) for scheduling between queues and a strict priority queue for voice traffic. Additionally, multiple thresholds can be configured to manage differentiated levels of service. Ideal for handling mission-critical, bursty, or low latency traffic such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) or voice applications, these interface modules, including the CEF720-based WS-X6704-10GE, scale network performance and intelligent services. These modules also feature transmit and receive packet buffers and a strict priority transmit queue. Additionally, the dCEF720-based WS-X6802-10GE offers deep packet buffers and granular queuing (16 queues/port using VLAN-Q or DSCP-Q) making it ideal for service provider deployments, particularly long-haul 10 gigabit Ethernet transmission. Cisco EtherChannel Technology - Increases Link Resiliency and provides scalable bandwidth aggregation The Catalyst 6500 can aggregate up to eight physical Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet or 10Gigabit Ethernet links into a single virtual link using Cisco's Port Aggregation Protocol (PAgP) or IEEE 802.3ad technology. This provides network managers a reliable high-speed solution for the campus network backbone. The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series also supports multimodule channeling technology, providing even greater resiliency by creating channels across ports on separate modules in the same chassis. As a result, connectivity is maintained even if one module (and corresponding ports) fails. This is ideal for deployments requiring scalable, flexible bandwidth within the network. An additional benefit of Cisco EtherChannel capabilities include automatic recovery and redistribution of loads across remaining links; easing management; and making the technology transparent to network applications.

Cisco Catalyst 6500 4 port 10 Gigabit Ethernet Interface Modules, CEF720 Designed for distribution to core and datacenter interconnections in networks, the 4-port CEF720-based 10 Gigabit Ethernet interface modules deliver highly scalable, high performance and flexible 10GbE forwarding capabilities with optional local acceleration and optional fully distributed forwarding. The WS-X6704-10GE provides higher system port density at an attractive price, encouraging the migration from Gigabit Etherchannel deployments to 10 Gigabit Ethernet. These modules provide the following operational advantages: Centralized forwarding architecture—The supervisor’s (CEF) engine performs all forwarding decisions; local acceleration and distributed forwarding options are supported as upgrades Forwarding performance—Forwards up to 30 Mpps per system (CEF) or when equipped with the optional dCEF daughter card for full local forwarding, can deliver up to 48 Mpps sustained throughput per slot with sustained system throughput of up to 400 Mpps. Available in the future, the optional aCEF daughter card will provide local packet acceleration at wire-rate, up to 48Mpps peak performance per slot or up to 400 Mpps peak per system. Note: When 2 of 4 ports (ports 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 or 2 and 3 or 1 and 4) are used on this interface module, equipped with the distributed forwarding card, non-blocking performance is achieved. When all 4 ports are active, these ports are up to 98% non-blocking. Distributed forwarding upgrade option—Increases system throughput by allowing all forwarding decisions to be locally distributed to the DFC-equipped interface module; requires a WS-F6700-DFC3and Cisco IOS native mode operation on the Supervisor 720. Accelerated forwarding upgrade (future availability)—Increases system throughput by allowing most forwarding decisions to be locally distributed (up to 16K flows per interface module) to the AFC-equipped interface module; requires a WS-F6700-AFC3 using Cisco Catalyst OS (CatOS) or Cisco IOS on the Supervisor Engine 720. Fabric connection—Connects through dual 20-Gbps serial-channel connections to fabric on Supervisor Engine 720 (40 Gbps total per slot) Supervisor engine—Requires the Supervisor Engine 720 Slot requirements—Can occupy any slot in any Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series chassis except the Cisco Catalyst 6513 chassis where they must be installed in slots 9 through 13 (the only slots on the chassis with dual fabric connections Optics—Supports hot-pluggable 10GBASE-LR long reach or 10GBASE-ER extended reach XENPAK optical modules) Table 3 dCEF720 10 Gigabit Ethernet Optical Interface Modules Product WS-X6704-10GE
