The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time El Tercer Domingo de Tiempo Ordinario January 22nd, 2017

Come after me . . .

Sígueme . . .

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time / January 21st - 22nd, 2017 Isaiah 8:23 - 9:3 w 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17 w Matthew 4:12-23 From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners, You may remember that in my October 16th bulletin letter from Rome I spoke about my kidney stone attack. I also mentioned in that letter that I was privileged the night before the attack to be a part of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of The Anglican Centre in Rome. Their mission is “to build new bridges between Roman Catholics and Anglicans.” Fifty years earlier, during what was the very first meeting since the Reformation of the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury and a Pope, the reigning pope, Paul VI, gave a symbolic gift to the reigning Archbishop, Michael Ramsey. The Pope gave the Archbishop the ring he was wearing. It was the ring that the people of Milan gave him when he became Archbishop there in 1954. Archbishop Ramsey wore this ring up until his death in 1988. During this past year’s visit in October, Pope Francis also gave the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Weby, a symbolic gift: a replica of Pope Gregory's crozier. Archbishop Welby in turn gave Pope Francis a symbolic gift: his own pectoral cross. Made of nails taken from the roof of Coventry Cathedral that was bombed during the Second World War, this cross was meant to symbolize reconciliation between peoples. Reconciliation is actually the theme of this year’s annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity: Reconciliation – The Love of Christ Compels Us (cf. 2 Cor 5:14-20). Our shared theme is particularly fitting this year as we mark the 500th Anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, when on October 31st, 1517, an Augustinian priest and scholar, Martin Luther, nailed his 95 theses on the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. This weekend finds us in the middle of that octave of prayer. Yet, our prayers for reconciliation between all Christian Churches, all peoples, and with one another really must continue in some way all year long, year after year, until genuine unity becomes a reality. After all, Jesus’ prayer for us is rather simple: “that they all may be one” (John 17:21). This is truly a goal for our prayer and work each and every day. As the title of the Life and Mission Decree of the 36th General Congregation, in which I was privileged while in Rome to play some small part, suggests, we must be “Companions in a Mission of Reconciliation and Justice.” So, let us commit ourselves to that decree’s closing paragraph to “pray for the courage and the freedom ‘to dare the audacity of the improbable’” (Homily of Rev. Bruno Cadoré, O.P. at the opening of GC 36) – for sometimes reconciliation does seem quite improbable. Yet, the love of Christ compels us. With hope for unity in the Lord, Fr. Joe

2/Third Sunday Ordinary Time

This annual collection is being taken up this weekend. In the past, this collection has taken place in November, so if you contributed through your envelope already, know that your donation has been kept aside to add to this collection. Your donation assists communities of women religious in the Archdiocese of Boston with the overwhelming costs of health care for their older Sisters. Like many American families, religious communities face the monumental challenge of funding eldercare. Currently, the average annual cost of care for women religious past age 70 is $41,214 per person. Skilled care can reach more than $63,000. The total cost of care for senior women religious in the United States has been close to $1 billion annually for each of the last eight years.

JANUARY 18 - 25 God of all, we pray as one, that we may be one, just as the Lord Jesus prayed we may be one in Him. Your son Jesus compels us to be reconciled to one another, May our spirits be joined to your Holy Spirit, that we may witness to the visible unity of your Church. May we all recognize that we are truly one with you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit and grow together in peace. We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.
