Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 60:1-6 w 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 w John 1:29-24

From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners, This Monday we will celebrate, as a nation, Martin Luther King Day and also end the work-week on Friday with the inauguration of a new president, Donald Trump. It is a safe bet to say that if you are reading this you know that Mr. Trump’s campaign slogan was “Make America Great Again.” Yet, if you are like me, you have scratched your head these past months asking, when was it that our nation was really great? The “again” seems to imply that there was a sort of golden age in America’s past. Really? I suspect we can all agree that it was not during those all too many years in which slavery was the economic engine that generated wealth for a privileged few in our nation, nor when the nonviolent civil rights protesters confronted armed police, water hoses and those angry mobs defending segregation. So, when exactly were we great? Isn’t it true that the U.S. – like all other human institutions – has always been a mixed bag with some great and not so great moments, even occurring simultaneously? Perhaps, for instance, amidst all the forceful resistance to the civil rights movement we glimpsed greatness in the struggle for civil rights itself, in the non-violent, peaceful protests where we saw courageous women and men presenting themselves in their fight for freedom and justice as “sheep to be slaughtered”[Psalm 44:22; Romans 8:36]. Perhaps we will glimpse such greatness again, if we as church and parish community, even though ourselves among the “mixed bag” of human institutions, consistently and without fear stand up in the years ahead for the poor, the exploited, the marginalized, and the unborn, if we support and care for victims of domestic violence and sex trafficking, for those who may loose health care, for those who may be deported, and for those who find no welcome from Lady Liberty. In short, if we become a voice for all the voiceless. Today, we hear in our first reading from the prophet Isaiah that God seeks a people to be a light to the nations, so that God’s very salvation may reach to the ends of the earth. I often thought, perhaps with a bit too much arrogance and jingoism, that we here in the U.S. were to one day become that light. With each passing year, I am less and less sure. But I do have hope. I particularly hope that you will help and encourage me, so that we may grow as a parish community to do what we can to become an ever brighter light to the nations. With hope in the Lord, Fr. Joe

2/Second Sunday Ordinary Time

How should we respond to this reality? Firstly, we need to become aware that the phenomenon of migration is not unrelated to salvation history, but rather a part of that history. One of God’s commandments is connected to it: “You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Ex 22:21); “Love the sojourner therefore; for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt” (Deut 10:19). This phenomenon constitutes a sign of the times, a sign which speaks of the providential work of God in history and in the human community, with a view to universal communion. -Pope Francis' message for World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2017

You can do it! Energy and enthusiasm are the only requirements -- no prior construction experience necessary. Spend the day working to “build hope by building homes” in partnership with low-income families in need of decent housing. To sign up, e-mail Anton Finelli at [email protected] or Sister Diane at [email protected].

Music Ministry A Fond Farewell to Michelle Abadia It is with some sadness, but more so with great appreciation, that we announce the departure of Michelle Abadia from our roster of cantors. Michelle’s voice has brought peace, joy and consolation to so many of us; we will miss her song leading at our weekend liturgies. Michelle has decided to explore new musical opportunities that will preclude her from continuing at St. Ignatius on a regular basis, but we look forward to her participation in special ways going forward. We send our prayers and best wishes for her future success, and so we will take the opportunity to celebrate with her after the Noon Liturgy on Sunday January 15th downstairs in the Friary Room. Please join us in expressing our gratitude for her many years of ministry at our parish.

Liturgy Commission The Liturgy Commission invites you for an afternoon of discussion and reflection on the upcoming Lenten and Easter seasons on Sunday January 29th, 2:00 p.m.-3:30p.m. Choir Media Room Thomas Burke, Ph.D. in Systematic Theology and cantor at St. Ignatius, will provide the theological background to jumpstart our discussion and reflection for this Lent and Easter. We hope the discussion and insight will be instrumental for the Liturgy Commissions liturgical planning for Lent and Easter. All are welcome to participate, so save the date!

Book Discussion Sunday, January 22th at 11:15a.m. Parish Office You are invited to a discussion of Spiritual Ecology: A Guide to Reconnecting with Nature by Jim Nollman. One reviewer notes "Spiritual Ecology will shock, provoke, and reawaken all readers to the marvels of our natural world. Written in the philosophical tradition of ecologists John Muir, Rachel Carson, and Henry David Thoreau, poetic and prophetic, this book helps us to see our earth better: through the soul of our living planet.” Come to the parish office and learn, as Pope Francis advises us, to care for our common home.
