Margaret Ursula Mee

Her Life: • Born on May 22, 1909 in England • Family of artists and naturalists • Attended classes at St. Martin's School of Art in London • Worked briefly as an art teacher in Liverpool

Beginning of Her Adventure: • 1952 Margaret and her husband Greville Mee made a permanent move to São Paulo, Brazil • Margaret began taking notes and painting botanical species • 15 expeditions – harsh environments, challenges, obstacles • Artwork presents deep details, accuracy and precision

Margaret’s response to the commercial exploitation of the forest was to publish a book with her artwork and discoveries showing the beauty and importance of the Amazonian forest.

She discovered the rarest of plant species, many new to science, some of them now extinct as a result of deforestation. Several have been named after her, including Aechmea meeana E. Pereira & Reitz,Nidularium meeanum Leme , Wand. & Mollo and Neoregelia margaretaeL.B. Sm.

Inspirational… …unique

“Her conservationist attitude was mirrored in her illustrations, as she began to include the natural habitat in the background of the paintings, her hope being that by including the natural habitat, this would emphasize the interdependency between plant and environment”.

Tillandsia tenuifolia var. surinamensis(Bromeliaceae) Collection

Vriesea billbergioides (Bromeliaceae ) Collection

Vriesea incurvata (Bromeliaceae) Collection

“By torchlight, she captured the whole life-cycle of the scented white flowers, from opening bud to withered petals. It was to be her last project, for later that year she was killed - not in the rainforest but in a car accident in England”

“I know my death will not be the end of my work. Wherever I go I will try to influence those who are destroying our planet, so the earth will have a chance to survive” – Margaret Mee
