In early November, Daniel Tiger and his friends at WOSU Public Media were invited to celebrate babies’ “First Birthday” on a Saturday afternoon at United Methodist Church - Community Development for All People (CD4AP) on Parsons Avenue. Over 120 people came to this celebration. The celebration was part of a series of quarterly events developed to support families and babies living in the South Side and echo CD4AP’s promise that “every baby born in our community will be welcomed and celebrated, surrounded by a supportive family, receive loving care and thrive in the years beyond!” The initiative is part of a serious effort to lower the 13.1% infant mortality rate in the South Side. WOSU’s Ready To Learn Service participated in this First Birthday and is partnering with CD4AP to promote the values and themes of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and the critical need to stimulate brain growth in the first years of life. Ready To Learn will continue to be involved in the effort throughout the year. Jan Pollard will facilitate First Birthday Alumni Coffee Sessions with parents who have celebrated their children’s first birthday. The sessions are for families with children ages 12 months to 5 years old. Jan will demonstrate to parents how to tap into on-air and online resources from Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and “brain building” materials by Vroom, a parenting resource focused on boosting early learning. With support from the Fred Rogers Company, the outreach project will culminate with a Daniel Tiger “Be My Neighbor Day” on June 17, 2017.
