Welcome to the

2015

Twyford Christmas & New Year Programme Hi everyone – well the festive season is nearly here again, and Twyford Village Partnership(TVP) has been working very hard on events and activities for you all to enjoy again. The centre-piece is the FAYRE on Friday 4th December, with stalls selling seasonal goodies and raising money for local organisations – for more details see pages 4 & 5. We are also featuring our LIVING ADVENT CALENDAR again for the 3rd year – with twenty four events leading up to the Carol Service at St Mary’s on Christmas Eve. We have businesses, community groups, the schools and churches all working closely together to get you into the “Village Christmas Spirit” – see pages 12 & 13 for the details of each event. TVP relies heavily on our 100 business members for support for all we do – they fund the Fayre, sponsor events like the Village Fun Run, buy advertising in this great magazine, which not only covers the costs – but actually makes money which we use at the Fayre! We are staging TWYFEST again next year (27th May - 4st June) and this would be impossible without business support and

money. So my message to you all this year is “SPEND IT IN TWYFORD” – if you buy locally not only will you save time, but you will be amazed at how competitive local businesses are!! They are all run by their owners, who really care about value and quality, so before getting the car think “can I get it in the village?” as you may be positively surprised by the value compared to national brands. So have look at pages 10 & 11 for lots of ideas for local Christmas Presents. Finally we will be lighting up the village again and will be switching on the big tree on Sunday 29th November at 5.30pm, and a big thank you to Round & About Magazine for producing this program and Bridge House for their generous sponsroship of the FAYRE. So please enjoy all the village has to offer and have a wonderful Christmas. Happy Christmas! Daniel Taylor, Chairman

Christmas Fayre Come and join the festivities It’s my pleasure to once again invite you all to the 2015 Christmas Fayre, taking place on December 4th. This friendly event has now established itself as a Twyford tradition, supported by local businesses, donations and of course, the many thousands of villagers who attend each year. We rely upon donations to make the event possible, and two in particular warrant mentions. Bridge House, who as our main sponsor provide us with the majority of the funds we require each year. And the Louis Bayliss Trust, who have been long term, and much appreciated, supporters. Their help means over 20 charities can take stalls at the Fayre and raise many thousands of pounds for local causes.

who help setup and take down the Fayre each year before retiring back to their grotto (or more often, the Duke)

Neil Cartwright Fayre Co-ordinator

We’d like to thank Waitrose, for both the use of the area outside their shop and their car park! Plus our gratitude for the assistance of Berkshire Lowland Rescue who provide our fantastic marshals. Finally, a huge thank you to Santa’s Elves (OK, I’ll let you in to a secret - it’s actually the Xmas Fayre Committee)

Lighting up the Village Hi everyone, well it is now the 5th year of lighting up the big tree in the centre of the village!! Wow doesn’t time fly – it doesn’t seem like 12 months since Kevin Windows bought the village the lovely decorated tree that we all enjoyed so much last Christmas. Remember Theresa May switching it on with all the kids watching – a great evening.

We still have all the decorations from last year, and Nick Barnes – owner of Treetop Landscapes Ltd. of Ruscombe is organising this year’s tree and putting it up. He has then promised to look after it for us, and then take it down to be recycled. We are sure it will be as good as last year and we hope that the weather will be good to us too. Twyford Village Partnership are also supplying about 15 smaller trees on the shops again, so we plan to have the village looking lovely again this year for the festive season. We are switching on the lights, kindly powered by Parkers, on Sunday 29th November at 5.30pm – so we do hope you will pop along, and we have James Puxley, Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire, to switch them on. Some of the shops at Bell Corner will be open. Parkers, who will doing drinks and nibbles beforehand – will also be displaying all the Christmas trees drawn by children, from the Polehampton Christmas Competition. The winners will help switch on the lights.

This marks the start of our Living Advent Calendar – 24 great events in December – see page 12/13 for more info. See you all on 29th , enjoy Christmas.

The David Brownlow Charitable Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives and wellbeing of those in the community, and is delighted to support a number of charitable activities in Twyford.

The David Brownlow Charitable Foundation is a UK registered charity, number 1144254.

One of our initiatives, the Into Mobility Project, has already helped a number of local residents become more mobile by supplying electric wheelchairs and scooters to those in need. We work closely with Twyford Village Partnership’s Health and Wellbeing Group to help us reach out to local residents who require support acquiring mobility equipment. Amongst others, one of the projects we were pleased to support this year was Happy Hours Pre-School by giving them a donation of £20,000. This donation has enabled them to continue providing excellent facilities for education and play for the pre-schoolers. If you believe there is a local charitable project that The David Brownlow Charitable Foundation may be able to support, please visit www.dbcf.com or email info@dbcf. com.

Spend it in Twyford TVPBF was formed in 2010, with about 25 local businesses who wanted to work together to help each other gain more business. The way we decided to do this was by organising more local events, explaining to local people about the real benefits of trading locally and providing opportunities to get each member’s name “OUT THERE” into the community. Since then the group has gone from strength to strength with almost 100 members now and a long list of actions and activities including 1. Organising the annual Fun Run at Piggott school, which so far has raised over £13,000 for local charities 2. Organising and supporting Twyford Charities Together – 6 local charities working together – for more details see page 8. 3. Helping organise the Living Advent calendar – again see pages 12 and 13 for more details. 4. Lighting up the centre of the village at Christmas, with trees on many of the shops – see page 7 for details of this year’s program 5. Helping people with mobility problems get help with the David Brownlow Charitable Foundation – see page 15 for more information

6. We are mentoring 54 students at Piggott School this year. 7. The businesses supported TWYFEST – with nearly 30 of our members directly involved on all 10 days. 8. We are currently working to make our Village Dementia Friendly, and also have programs to help the many Carers in the local community 9. Sponsoring most of the Comets football teams.

Most of all we have the Spend it in Twyford campaign – to remind you all that a thriving community needs thriving businesses to provide jobs, goods and services to our community - as well as making a significant contribution to those less well off in the area. We estimate that TVPBF has put back nearly the equivalent of £200,000 into community activities in just over five years. So help us to help you by “SPENDING IT IN TWYFORD”

Waiting, waiting for those test results, fearing the worst, hoping for the best. Waiting for just the right job in which all our potential will be realised. Waiting for our beloved to say “I will”, waiting for our child to be born, and waiting for our heart to heal after the loss of a loved one. When we wait we recognise that we are not in control. When we wait we are often hopeful of a better future and at the same time fearful that it may not be so. We can wait calmly, we can wait impatiently, but neither will affect the outcome! In the church Advent is celebrated as a season of waiting. Every year we all wait for Christmas in a burst of activity, which includes the delightful events in our Living Advent Calendar. The activities are part of the getting ready, part of the making of Christmas, and so is the waiting. For in Advent we wait for the birth of a child, and in that child we dare to see God coming towards us in love. In that love we and all creation receive our true purpose, our deepest healing, our certain hope.

ristmas Greeting

Christmas Message

from the Catholic Church of St Thomas More Twyford In this sceptical world, most people do not believe in miracles, everything has to be proved by science. Yet here we are celebrating the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ, born of the Virgin Mary. This is a day when we celebrate a miracle. Today God enters human history through the birth of His Son, he becomes our peace and our hope in a troubled world. There is a uniqueness about Christmas. People seek out their family and friends and there is an attempt to be kinder and sympathetic to others. This year, we will do well to remember those most in need, the homeless, those without work and those migrants who have fled

the hostilities in Syria and Iraq. We should support and help those charities who strive to make this world a better place. Out of our abundance, we should give to those most in need. We thank the TVP for their efforts, through the Advent Calendar, to bring about the true meaning of Christmas, especially to the elderly and housebound, in conjunction with various community groups within the village. We wish you all a very happy and joyful Christmas..

The Wizard The Twyford and Ruscombe Theatre Group are pleased to announce that their annual pantomime for 2016 will be The Wizard of Oz by Adrian Barradell. This is a pantomime version of the well known story by L Frank Baum.

OF OZ

greatly enjoyed our 50 years performing for the people of Twyford and the surrounding area and look forward to the next 50 years. Visit our website www.twyrusdrama.org. uk or follow us on Facebook.

During a terrible storm, Dorothy and her pet Toto are whisked off to the strange land of Oz. Here they meet many different people and creatures including Munchkins, a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion. All have reason to find the mysterious Wizard who, they hope, can help them. They are pursued by the angry Wicked Witch of the West. Can they find the Wizard and outwit the Witch? The answer can only be found by coming along to our pantomime! Order a programme at the time of booking and get it free by entering code ADVENT. Offer available until December 25th. 2015 has been a celebratory year for the group. We have

Be A Santa to

a Senior,

Christmas Party….2015…let’s get Christmas started! For the third year in succession, TVP, Home Instead Senior Care, Age Concern, Hare Hatch Sheeplands Garden Centre and the David Brownlow Trust will host nearly 150 seniors from the Twyford’ area at a Christmas Tea Party to be held at Collerton School on the afternoon of 21 November. Entertainment will be provided and traditional Christmas Carols sung, with, we hope the help of the school chorister’s as well as the guests themselves. There will be lots of convivial chat, a glass or two of Fizz, some excellent fancies and the odd sausage role washed down with “lashings of ginger beer”…. ( well, Tea actually!). We can arrange transport to and from the venue but as you might expect space and places are limited so if you have received an invite and haven’t replied please do so. If you haven’t received an invite and live in the twyford area and are over 65…and you fancy a nice afternoon out, then contact Gordon Holmes at the Age Concern Day Centre on 0118 934 4040 or Paul Westgarth at Home Instead Senior Care on 01491 877132 or 01628 299097 and if there is space we will book you a place.

to your seat.

The good news is its free courtesy of the sponsors: TVP, Age Concern, Home Instead Senior Care, Hare Hatch Sheeplands and for the first time this year the David Brownlow trust who will be providing the high tea. So if you do want to get started on the annual Christmas festivities, please come along to celebrate the start of a month long calendar of events in and around Twyford.

Need some help as you get older, What are my options?

Sadly sometimes when older relatives arrive to stay for Christmas we notice that they have become a little frailer than we remember them. There comes a time in life when things are getting just a little bit too difficult to handle alone but what options are there for Senior Citizens who need support? The usual response is a residential home and for many that’s a perfect choice, with some excellent local facilities offering great surroundings, companionship and reassurance, but there are also other options for those who want to stay in their own homes.

with a chosen provider, the arrangement can over time develop into something more substantial up to and including 24 hour live in care. If in home care is your choice, then the key decision has to be based on the quality and reputation of the provider: Do they send the same person? Are they properly referenced, insured and trained? Do they arrive on time and when you Great news! want them to arrive? Do they do what has Free Christmas been agreed and, particularly’ importantly, hampers what do their clients and the Government regulator, the CQC, say about them? secured for

another year.

This can often start with downsizing to something a little more manageable but again that’s not an option that’s right for, or available to, everyone. Regardless of whether you downsize or not you may choose to engage care in your own home on either a part time or full time basis. It’s called domiciliary care in the jargon. People usually start with a couple of one hour visits a week to do the things that are getting a little too taxing or just for some companionship. Having established trust

If you qualify for state support you can choose to manage that funding yourself and choose the care provider that suits you rather than taking what is given …and top up if necessary.

So if you or a loved one needs a bit of help then make enquiries sooner rather than later. it’s one of those things best given consideration when you still have options rather than when a crisis arises. Call us on 01491 877132 or 01628 299097

Riverways Riverways farm was established in December 2011,and we now have 5,000 free range chickens and we sell our eggs from our farm gate shop to the public. We also have 12 Reindeer on the farm as well as , geese, ducks, pigs, guinea fowl and peacocks . Reindeer are magical creatures and are enormously popular with all ages; they have velvety antlers and love to be the centre of attention. Reindeer rentals is fairly unique with just a handful of people doing it in the country. Eight of our reindeer are visiting local events and Garden Centres for several weeks up to Christmas. They are appearing at the TWYFORD CHRISTMAS FAYRE on the 4th December for the second time – so don’t miss them. Mullie Estate Agents are sponsoring them again – THANKS MULLIE!

Taking the reindeer into schools is a huge part of the business, with morning or afternoon bookings. The visits are enormous fun, very educational and a lovely end to the Christmas term. Visits are mostly for infant, junior and special needs schools, and often schools link together or share a visit. We also use them for photo shoots, product launches, marketing events, Santa’s arrival, switching on Christmas
