SENTENCE Mark 10.15

‘Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.’

COLLECT

O God, who alone can probe the depths of the heart, you hear the prayer of the humble and justify the repentant sinner: grant us the gift of humility, that, seeing our own faults clearly, we may refrain from judging our neighbour but rely solely upon your saving grace. We make our prayer through your Son, our Saviour, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

FIRST Reading

Joel 2.23-32 O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the Lord your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before. The threshing floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.

You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other. And my people shall never again be put to shame. Then afterwards I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit. I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls. For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. At Solemn High Mass, the choir sings the psalm.

PSALM 65

1. 2.

You are to be praised, O God, in Zion: to you shall vows be paid, you that answer prayer. To you shall all flesh come to confess their sins: when our misdeeds prevail against us, you will purge them away.

CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Railway Square, Sydney

Mass Readings 3. Blessed are those whom you choose and take to yourself to dwell within your courts: we shall be filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple. 4. You will answer us in your righteousness with terrible deeds, O God our saviour: you that are the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the distant seas; 5. Who by your strength made fast the mountains: you that are girded with power; 6. Who stilled the raging of the seas, the roaring of the waves: and the tumult of the peoples. 7. Those who dwell at the ends of the earth are afraid at your wonders: the dawn and the evening sing your praises. 8. You tend the earth and water it: you make it rich and fertile. 9. The river of God is full of water: and so providing for the earth, you provide grain for us all. 10. You drench its furrows, you level the ridges between: you soften it with showers and bless its early growth. 11. You crown the year with your goodness: and the tracks where you have passed drip with fatness. 12. The pastures of the wilderness run over: and the hills are girded with joy. 13. The meadows are clothed with sheep: and the valleys stand so thick with corn, they shout for joy and sing.

Mass readings

Second reading

2 Timothy 4.6-8, 16-18 As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. At my first defence no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: ‘Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax-collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, “God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax-collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.” But the tax-collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all

who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

repertoire. This Mass in G minor is very spiritual in manner and reflects the influences of modal techniques and harmonies, which remind us of Renaissance Elizabethan, English composers, men such as Tallis and Byrd. Composed in October 1921 Vaughan Williams’s Mass in G minor is dedicated ‘To Gustav Holst and his Whitsuntide Singers’. This group and Sir Richard Runciman Terry’s Westminster Cathedral Choir, which specialized in ‘early’ choral music, were the inspiration for the work. The completed Mass was sent to Terry for comment—he was delighted by it—before its first performance by The City of Birmingham Choir conducted by Joseph Lewis on 6 December 1922. Terry gave the first liturgical performance of the work on 12 March 1923.

SUNDAY NOTICES Erasmus and his Greek Testament Solemn Evensong & Te Deum 30 October Desiderius Erasmus (Rotterdam 1466 – Basel 1536) was the most respected scholar of his age and combined his learning with wit and urbanity. Erasmus was a moderate reformer from within Catholicism whose voice was drowned as more extreme versions of reform and counter-reform clashed in the later part of his life. His edition of The New Testament appeared the year before Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses, and eleven years before Henry VIII first sought annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. The project began as a new edition of the Latin New Testament of St Jerome (the Vulgate), aiming to polish its late Latin into a more classical style. As Erasmus explained, ‘It is only fair that Paul should address the Romans in somewhat better Latin.’ Erasmus added a Greek version so that his readers could assess the accuracy of his Latin, but he was also catering to a demand to return to the original sources of Christian teaching. Meanwhile, a team of scholars outside Madrid had been working since 1502 on the Complutensian Polyglot Bible, an elaborate edition in Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, and Latin. Its New Testament had been completed and printed by 1514, but publication was not authorised until 1520 The first page of Erasmus’s Greek New Testament.
