Music Live@Lunch

I love this Chinese proverb. It reminds me that we human beings need beauty. To have a full belly and a roof over our heads is simply not enough. In a culture that tells us the arts are a superfluous luxury, we run the risk of becoming satisfied but soulless people.

If you are thumbing through this brochure, I suspect you also believe that beauty is essential to a meaningful life. Perhaps you are a concert-goer who connects with mystery through the elegance of Baroque cello playing, the timelessness of Arvo Pärt’s choral music, or the wild abandon of Rachmaninoff’s piano works. Perhaps you are a churchgoer who revels in the grandeur of the Anglican cathedral tradition, the haunting melodies of a Native American-inspired Eucharist, or the playful improvisation of a jazz mass. Whatever role music and the arts play in your life, we hope you will find throughout Christ Church Cathedral’s 2016-17 season experiences of beauty that enrich your life.

Services

This year I am particularly pleased to announce that the Cincinnati Symphony’s Chamber Players concert series will be held at the cathedral while Music Hall is under renovation. Between the performances offered by the CSO, those offered by our in-residence ensembles (the Cincinnati Men’s Chorus and Collegium Cincinnati), and an array of special concerts, the 2016-17 concert season will be as fulfilling as ever. Wishing you a life filled with beauty, Stephan Casurella Canon Precentor & Director of Music 2 |

Choirs Christ Church Cathedral Choir The Christ Church Cathedral Choir is an ensemble of professional and volunteer choristers who sing at weekly Sunday morning services, monthly services of Evensong, and other major liturgical observances in the church year. The choir offers a range of choral literature from the Anglican cathedral tradition, the folk tradition of African-Americans, newly written works, and idioms from other cultures. The choir is directed by Stephan Casurella. Choir auditions are held every summer.

High School Choral Scholars The cathedral’s choral scholars are high school students who participate as apprentices in all the duties of the Christ Church Cathedral Choir. They are trained in the art of fine choral singing and performing at a professional level. They sing a wide range of repertoire, such as works by Tallis, Brahms, and Howells, as well as spirituals and music of other cultures. They are compensated with a monthly stipend throughout the academic year. Auditions: To apply for a choral scholar position, students must complete an application packet before being invited to audition. Auditions are held every summer.

Christ Church Singers This non-auditioned ensemble is designed for those who love to sing but are not able to commit to the Christ Church Cathedral Choir’s rehearsal and performance schedule. Supported by a quartet from the Cathedral Choir, the Singers meet for a single rehearsal and service several times throughout the season.

Cathedral Choir of Children and Youth The Cathedral Choir of Children and Youth (CCCY) is a citywide choir program that fosters lifelong enjoyment and appreciation of music through the singing of sacred choral works. The program, which is based on the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Voice for Life curriculum, is open to children as young as grade two. No prior music experience is required. Choristers have the opportunity to develop music skills, make new friends, and explore faith. Directed by Christopher Wheeler, the choir performs once a month at Christ Church Cathedral and other churches and venues throughout Greater Cincinnati. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings, beginning September 7. While choristers are encouraged to join the choir at the beginning of the season, interested young people may be accepted at other times during the year. 14 |

Summer Choir Camp Monday, June 26 – Friday, June 30 The cathedral’s annual week-long summer choir camp combines fun and learning for children entering grades two and above. Children sing, play instruments, create art, and explore Christian faith. No prior music experience necessary.
