We will talk with the manager who will discuss with us the farming practices, crop rotation, fertilization and herbicide management, commercial and financial aspects of the operation. We will of course have some time to inspect the crops. Visit Alejandro’s Calderon machinery shed in town, to get an idea of the type of technology which is used in the area, where most farmers don’t own large equipment, but hire heavy labor. Continue with lunch at the show grounds of the Sociedad Rural Argentina. After lunch, we make a short stop at a local grain elevator. The Gallos are a typical example of a family owned operation which has gotten smaller by sub-division of land through inheritance, and are now struggling to keep the farm in the family. They are doing this through diversification with crops typical of the area, such as corn and soybeans, a small pedigree sheep operation, some poultry, and also lease some land. Lunch at the farm. We later depart to Villa Mercedes, in the province of San Luis, crossing the province of Cordoba, and also moving out of the main areas of the Pampas. Check into your hotel later that evening.
