NoDa Spotlight: Mel Gale

as interviewed by DJ Rankin with blurr-tography by Lauren Schalburg It’s undeniable that NoDa embraces tattoo culture. In fact, it seems like everyone you know has a tattoo. With two tattoo shops on our block, our neighborhood is a prime destination for those seeking some fresh ink. The artists live a glamorous lifestyle of pool parties, global jet-setting, and strippers (Chippendales, mainly). But ever wonder who is actually doing all the work at the shop while these idiots are off gallivanting around town? Well, we stopped in at Fu’s Custom Tattoo and had a few words with shop manager Mel Gale. We told her it was off the record, but we’re printing it anyway (we lie a lot). DJ: Tell us about your first tattoo. MG: My first tattoo??! [….hesitation....] I was seventeen. It was an image of a lion that I liked. LS interrupts: Where is it? MG: It’s gone! DJ: What’s the craziest tattoo story here at Fu’s? MG: Taddeo’s balls. It was a PBR Friday the 13th event. LS interrupts: I bet that hurt! MG: Yeah. You have to stretch it. Same as the shaft. Luckily, I wasn’t here, but I heard all about it. DJ: Wow. That’s nuts. What other exciting things have happened at Fu’s? MG: Christmas parties are always fun. Joey’s wedding. His bachelor party had a huge white stretched Hummer, Hangover 3 t-shirts … and blow-up sheep and ladies involved. Neither have returned.

tom Tattoo for 16 years. We’ve been living in Salisbury for the last 7. We have wild turkey in our yard. LS interrupts: The animal or the bottle? MG: The animal. We also have deer. People ask to hunt, but Tommy lets them know that I would shoot them first. DJ: What’s your favorite thing about NoDa? MG: I love how everybody knows everybody and we’re all friends. I’ve been known to leave work at my shop to go to the other shop just to hang out. I also visit Bruce (the dog) at Custom. DJ: You’re so beautiful. What’s your secret? MG: Stay out of the sun! Everyone loves the sun, but I hate it. I’ve had sun-poisoning twice. Also, at the end of your shower, rinse in cool water before you get out … and always dry in an upward motion. DJ: What kind of music are you into? MG: I love old music: Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye. I like the sound of actual records. DJ: What do you like to do when you are not at work? MG: I take care of dogs. I love to paint. I had a piece in the Black Sheep Show at Twenty-Two. So far, she sounded too good to be true. Just to make sure she wasn’t frontin’, I asked Hans Drost to give me some dirt on Mel. He said, “She’s the best, absolutely the best, hands down the best, she’s the cat’s ass.”

DJ: I hear you are into dogs. MG: I work with pitbull rescue. I’m down to three that live with me full-time now: Oni, Bali, and Bubba. People just show up with puppies that need homes, but I’ve been told that if I come home with one more dog, I’ll be looking for another place to live.

So much for the dirt, I guess Mel really is as awesome as she seems. I promised her plenty of stalkers as a result of this article, so don’t make a liar out of me (again). Stop by Fu’s today and check her out. Make sure to bring her a pitbull puppy so she’ll love you forever. (Don’t actually do that!)

DJ: Speaking of looking for another home, how’s your personal life? MG: I’ve been with Lil’ Tommy from Ace Cus-

Offering Event Space in NoDa by Paula Bartlett Craft beer…Check. Unique, twisted cuisine...Check. Wedding Reception space. Say what? Heist Brewery has been a part of the NoDa neighborhood for over a year now and this start up microbrewery/restaurant is beginning to make its mark in event planning not only in our community but in Charlotte as a whole. Heist is home to the shared plate, casual atmosphere of a brewery and that has been established over their year in business, but Heist is also planning and hosting events almost every day of the week in their 6,800 square foot remodeled former mill.

You may have noticed a bunch of new faces on the front of Neighborhood Theatre since September 9th. This mural is part of a global participatory art initiative called Inside Out. Over 120,000 people from more than 108 countries have participated to date. The concept, developed by artist JR and partially funded by the TED prize, pays tribute to the power and dignity of individuals and their untold stories by displaying their portraits in public spaces around the world.

“NoDa has never seen anything like Heist before. Kurt Hogan (owner) and I knew that there was a need for something like this in Charlotte, and NoDa was the perfect setting to showcase our creativity and innovation when it comes to food, beer and architecture,” said Executive Chef Rob Masone. Masone came to Charlotte from Fayetteville with a large pedigree in catering. With the restaurant, he had the intention of bringing the catering world within four walls. He and his team are doing just that. On a weekly basis they are hosting alumni happy hours, corporate company plated dinners, wedding rehearsal dinners and corporate luncheons. There is rarely an occasion where you can pass by the gorgeous wood-stacked walls and not see some group having a party. Prime example, last week Heist was the official launch party site of Lyft (your friend with a car) in Charlotte, and this 400+ person party was a huge success. Simultaneously, Heist played host to Charlotte Green Drinks, a monthly meetup group of the city’s environmentally minded individuals, businesses and non-profits. Two totally different events in two different industries, but Heist is able to execute them both under the same roof. Beyond managing all of the events in house, Masone and team have ventured into the off-site catering world and are now booking jobs throughout the state. “The sky is truly the limit with our events. I’m inspired by clients who want to create something different for their guests,” noted Masone. “I always say I can hang food from the ceiling and really create a memory, you just have to say go.” For more information on booking events in-house or off-site visit the website at heistbrewery.com or contact Paula Bartlett, Events & Sales Coordinator, at [email protected].

SAVE THE DATE: October 26, 2013 Fall is upon us and that means one thing: NoDaWEEN is almost here. The NoDa Neighborhood & Business Association is proud to present the 4th annual neighborhood bash – NoDaWEEN. This year, the festivities include 4 events that will occur throughout the day in the historic arts district of NoDa, just north of Charlotte’s Center City. The celebration will begin at 2pm with the family-friendly KiDaWEEN, followed by Charlotte’s only twilight race, the Freaky 5K. At 7:30pm everyone is invited to the official kickoff party to the Halloween weekend, the NoDaWEEN party where the runner’s award ceremony, raffle prizes and pumpkin exhibition will occur. Later, all are welcome to “Do the Time Warp” with the greatest audience participation movie, The Rocky Horror Picture Show™, ending the night’s festivities. All information can be found at www. nodaween.com. A portion of the day’s proceeds will go towards Running Works, a non-profit running program that uses its funds to encourage the homeless community in the city of Charlotte one stride at a time.

Looking for something to do with your kids on Halloween? Look no further than the NoDa neighborhood favorite event KiDaWEEN! This FREE NoDa tradition is getting bigger and better every year, and this fall the family-friendly event occurs between 2-5pm in the space between JackBeagle’s and Solstice Tavern. Parents and kids can take part in a variety of activities including bouncing in a Sponge Bob Combo Bouncer and Monster Obstacle Course inflatable. Character drawings, a fun photo booth, face-painting by Fu’s Custom Tattoo, a chalk drawing area, cornhole, a spooky walkway, and other great activities will also be provided! Quality family time can be spent painting pumpkins and taking part in the Balloon Pop live art project.

The Queen City’s Twilight Costume Race is Back For the 4th year, NoDa is host to Charlotte’s only Twilight Costume Race. The Freaky 5K is kicking off at about 6:00pm and is sure to have the neighborhood filled with excitement. Hundreds of runners and revelers will race through the neighborhood in the Freaky 5k Twilight Race. Costumes are optional, but you better believe that they are encouraged. You will see everything from cartoon characters and super heroes to dragons and running beer cans! Every registered runner will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win $1,000 in cash sponsored by State Farm Insurance! “We are so thankful for Aprille Shaffer at State Farm for bringing the race to the whole ‘notha level this year,” said treasurer Lauren Schalburg. Advanced registration for the race is $30, and you can register online at http:// nodaweenfreaky5k.racesonline.com/. Start 2 Finish, this year’s timing company, includes electronic chip timing and a results tent with live scrolling results on TV monitors and on touch screen kiosks. Each entrant will receive a performance t-shirt, a bag full of goodies from our many generous sponsors, and a craft beer ticket for the after-party. All runners are invited to join the NoDa neighbors at the official after-party of the Freaky 5K. The NoDaWEEN Party will take place at the Highland Mills parking lot in front of Heist Brewery. Here, the $1,000 raffle winner will be announced as well as the top runners and best costumes (prizes given for both individual and group costumes). Start planning your costumes and get in the Halloween spirit! See you at the race!

Bring your sons and daughters in costume not only for Halloween spirit but for a chance to win a fun NoDa gift basket! A kid’s costume contest is being held and entries are accepted until 4:30pm. The most creative costume will take home the prize. Live music will also be provided by NoDa’s own JuiceBox! This high-energy, kid-friendly band loves singing songs about “veggie power,” counting, and healthy living. Check out some clips of this fun band at www.nodaween.com. “We try really hard to make sure that this is a FREE event for families. We have some fantastic sponsors who consistently support this event and allow us to provide new and exciting things each year,” said KiDaWEEN event coordinator Brett Rice. Of course, donations are always appreciated.

The First Annual Queen City Fringe Fest

by James Cartee

The Queen City Fringe Festival is set to start the first weekend of October (3rd-6th). It’s a celebration of neighborhoods and what they offer the arts community with a focus this year on NoDa, Plaza Midwood and Elizabeth. We are planning this as an annual fest that showcases and increases awareness of all disciplines of the arts, with an eye towards the large and growing art scenes throughout Charlotte. It’s... going to be fun. And big! We are presenting with the help of 42 venues available for over 100 acts during the four-day fest. There’s a planned parade, a vendor’s market, workshops, classes some provided by out-of-state companies like the first fringe theatre: Living Theatre NYC, with artists presenting work from every discipline of art among a slew of other events including our grand finale: the annual Metrolina Theatre Awards. Look us up online or buy tickets at qcfringe.com!

This October, leave the mercury poisoning to the post-apocalyptic horror flicks. Bring your spent CFL bulbs to the NoDa Neighborhood Association meeting on October 1st, and we’ll take them to a recycling facility for proper disposal. Posture is one of the most overlooked fitness flaws. Many people forget your posture makes a difference in how you project yourself to others, as well as how slim you look. Simply straightening up on your posture can take almost 10 pounds off your frame immediately, so it’s not something to forget to address. Let’s look at four quick tips to help you attain better posture: Open Up The Chest The very first thing that will instantly enhance your posture is to open up your chest. Squeeze your shoulder blades back and push your sternum forward. This will instantly make you stand up taller. Use The ‘String’ Technique With this technique, you’ll want to think like there’s a string attached to the top of your head pulling your body in the upwards direction. As it pulls upwards, your entire spinal column should move into a better alignment. Do this periodically throughout the day to help straighten up instantly.

Join forces for the Fall Adopt-A-Stream Clean Up Cordelia Park | 2100 N. Davidson Street | 10:00 am – 12:00pm Gloves, Waders, Trash Bags, Litter Grabbers, Coffee & Snacks provided. Thank You Brew at BirdSong after the Clean Up!

Squeeze Your Glutes Another quick technique you can use while standing in line as you wait anywhere is squeezing the glutes. Not only does this actually help to build strength in the glute muscles, but it’ll shift your hips in the upwards direction, repositioning your back so it’s in better alignment with your spine. It’s an instant change that can actually prevent lower back pain down the road. Breathe Upwards As you go about your breathing pattern, always think of breathing and expanding your chest upwards rather than just outward from the belly. Those who use belly breaths often find they will feel more fatigued by the end of the day than those who are breathing in deeply through the lungs and moving the body in the upwards direction rather than straight out. It’ll take a bit of time to get used to this movement pattern but if you use it often enough, you will see great benefits in terms of how you feel and the posture you’re using. So keep these quick tips in mind and you can ensure that you are maintaining proper posture and moving one step closer to the ideal physique you desire. To turbo-charge your rapid results towards your ideal physique come test drive our group personal training classes at www.heroicfitness.com (514 Est 15th Street).

Streetlight Stroll by Shannon Lynch

Do you like walking to our restaurants/shops, or say, going for an early morning run, yet feel uncomfortable or unsafe because some areas have no lighting? Come join us on Friday, October 11th at 6:30pm when the NoDa Vision Committee will be organizing/leading a walk starting from Salud Beer Shop (across from Dog Bar on N. Davidson St.). Depending on how many people (dogs and kids are welcome too) participate, we plan on breaking up into groups of 3-4 people each, with a NoDa Vision member heading up each team. Each group will get a map with their streets to walk. They will note where we need additional streetlights to be added to existing poles, then reconvene back at Salud at 9pm to turn in their maps. NoDa Vision will then take these maps to CDOT and get the process started for us to get more streetlights in our area. We are hoping for a great response and participation from our neighbors!! Our goal is to make NoDa safer than ever before. Every little thing we do to improve our area counts. So come on out, have a beer at Salud, get a little exercise and socializing time in with the neighbors and make a difference. It should be a good time, and the more folks that come out, the more ground we can cover in a shorter amount of time. Don’t just sit back - be a part of the process to help make our neighborhood more pedestrian friendly and safer for all of us. Contact [email protected] for more information.

The Window on NoDa: a 24-hour Storefront Viewing Experience

Burial grounds, baseball games & boarding houses make for a twisted tour this year. Have you seen the movie Carrie 2? Have you felt the eyes of little boys peeping through the fence on Alexander Street? Have you heard moaning coming from the Highland Mill? If so, you’re not alone. Through conversations, research and interviews we’ve discovered twelve ghosts and ten stories involving some of the characters in NoDa that you can’t see. Here’s your chance to meet the invisible and learn interesting historical tidbits and anecdotes about North Charlotte. As always, our tour is free, but we gladly accept donations to aid in advancing our mission to preserve the history of the neighborhood. We also love when locals add their own yarns to the mix. So bring your stories and your walking shoes to North Davidson Street October 18th.
