CHAPTER III DISCUSSION A. History of CV Tunas Muda CV. Tunas Muda was founded when Mr. Tumin began his first time pioneering business from zero. At that time, he only sold an ice cream (in Indonesia, we call “es dung-dung”) then he opened small travel agency business by renting a car or mini bus for tour to Bali. After several years it was developed quickly and then he started to expand his business which is catering service. CV. Tunas Muda is a travel agency business which gives service in transportation and culinary. This agency provides kinds of travel package, for private or group. This company considers the satisfaction of the costumer, the facility and the service. Besides that, CV. Tunas Muda tour and travel agency gives the chance to student to do trip. This draws costumers’ interest from junior high school to senior high school. This company has also purpose to sell service product which is offered to all categories and considers that satisfaction as more important. In 2002, CV. Tunas Muda with Mr. Tumin as the owner was assisted by his colleague and the members of his family. CV. Tunas Muda has become member of ASITA (Association of the Indonesian Tour and Travel Agencies). CV. Tunas Muda is located at Jl. Kutilang Putukrejo (North Perumnas Palur)

F. Job Training Activities in CV. Tunas Muda I have successfully done the job training in CV. Tunas Muda from 30th March 2015 to 27th April 2015, approximately four weeks or more than 100 hours. This training program was aimed at increasing my knowledge about Tour Leader and fulfill the requirement of graduating from the English Diploma Program Sebelas Maret University. When conducting the job training in CV. Tunas Muda, I was assigned as Tour Leader. It was so enjoyable when I was trained and took a part as a Tour Leader in CV. Tunas Muda. There were several activities that I did during the job. 1. First Meeting The beginning of the task when I had job training in CV. Tunas Muda was to attend at offices and to meet the owner, the staff, and the students who had job training in CV. Tunas Muda. Then the owner of CV. Tunas Muda and the staff described the changeover of CV. Tunas Muda to make job training participants be able to carry out their duties. 2. Second Meeting In the second meeting, the owner and the staffs described about itinerary to Bali with SMP 1 Muhammadiyah Surakarta from 4th April 2015 to 8th April, SMP 9 Surakarta from 11th April 2015 to 15th April 2015, and the English Education Department, Slamet Riyadi University from 18th April 2015 to 22nd April 2015. I was given a schedule to join the tour to Bali under the guidance of Tour Leader in

CV. Tunas Muda from 4th April 2015 to 8th April 2015 and from 11th April 2015 to 15th April 2015.

3. Participating in trip to Bali The first trip begun from 4th April 2015 to 8th April 2015 with SMP 1 Muhammadiyah Surakarta as participants, Professional Tour Leaders from CV. Tunas Muda handled each bus containing 36 participants accompanied by two teachers from a total of 180 participants. My duty was to observe what the Professional Tour Leader did during his job as tour leader and to pay attention to the participants. The Second Trip begun from 11th April 2015 to 15th April 2015. On this tour, I got responsibility to handle the participants from SMP 9 Surakarta in a bus contained 40 participants accompanied by 2 teachers from a total of 187 participants. But, it was still under the supervision of a Professional Tour Leader

G. The Duties of Tour Leader in CV. Tunas Muda CV. Tunas Muda conducted many efforts to make costumers satisfied with the service in transportation and culinary. There are many duties that have been conducted by Tour Leader in CV. Tunas Muda, especially when touring to Bali. The duties are:

1. Introducing to the participants The first duty is introducing to the participants. Tour Leader gives a detailed information to the participants about the Tour Agency and the information that relate to the trip. The information are a. Profile of Tour Leader. b. Travel agency that handles this tour. c. The transportation facilities. d. Profile of driver and co-driver. These are basic standard of the CV Tunas Muda’s Services for the participants to know the travel agency that is serving their trip. 2. Checking and Praying with participants The Tour Leader in CV Tunas Muda should organize all the participants along with their luggage loaded in bus trunk. After everything had been ready, the next duty was to check all the participants in accordance with the list of name that have been prepared. In this situation, the tour leader was expected to memorize the faces of the participants. Then the Tour Leader invited the teachers to lead the prayer.

3. Providing first aid kits Tour Leader duties are leading, guiding, and escorting trips. As Tour Leader in CV. Tunas Muda, I paid attention to the participants

and prevented participants who were unhealthy. The Tour Leader cooperated with the teachers to prepare medicines. When there were participants complaining about serious illness. The Tour Leader of CV. Tunas Muda responded rapidly to contact the head of the Tour Leaders and to bring the participant to the nearest hospital.

4. Guiding and Interacting with participants The Tour Leaders of CV. Tunas Muda should be able to notice the situation to keep communication with the participants. On the trip there was a point of interest sites, so the Tour leader was expected to have wide knowledge of the destinations that were passed. When I was on tour to Bali, on the trip I explained the following: a) Royal history of Majapahit in Mojokerto. b) Paiton Power Plant in Probolinggo. c) explaining the religion in Bali. d) explaining regency names in Bali. e) explaining the daily language in Bali. The activities would make the participants gain experience and interesting information during the trip.

5. Coordinating and Cooperating

The main duties that had to be handled by the Tour leaders of CV. Tunas Muda were coordinating and cooperating with the teams of CV. Tunas Muda. The teams were: a. The Head of the Tour Leaders of CV. Tunas Muda. b. The Group Leader of the institution. c. The Transportation services. d. The owner of restaurants, hotels, and tourist destinations. e. Local Guide in Bali who knows the tourist attractions to be visited. The Tour Leaders also cooperated with the participants to coordinate their groups when stopped at restaurants, gas stations, and ports. So that no participants would be left behind.

H. The Problems I Faced as the Tour Leader in CV. Tunas Muda and the Solution In conducting the duties, I faced many problems and found solution to solve it when I became the Tour Leader in CV. Tunas Muda. 1. Lack of confidence The confidence is one of personality aspects that is very important in life. It is also important because the Tour Leaders are expected to be communicative with the participants. The problems faced as inexperienced tour leader is lack of confidence. It was one of the

obstacles I often faced when the Senior Tour Leader asked me to interact with the participants. The situation made me quite nervous. Thus, the participants were not interested to hear my explanation. Then I found a solution to solve this problem by practicing and learning how to speak confidently in front of the participants from Professional Tour leader in the CV Tunas Muda. By having confidence, I had courage to speak in front of them. 2. Lack of experiences Experience is something happened in the past that can be a lesson in the future. Being an experienced tour leader is very important thing when facing the problems. The common problem for the Tour Leaders the lack of experience in their experience. It also become a problem for me since it was my first time of being a Tour Leader. The problems are: a. the participants are unhealthy or unconscious. b. lack of coordination makes the participants careless with the rules that cause new problems. c. feeling confused when being asked by the participants about the schedule. d. the participants complained about the trip facilities. By working under Professional Tour Leader’s guidance. I get the solution to solve problems when facing the situation above.

3. Limited knowledge The Tour Leader’s duties are leading, guiding, and escorting trips. The Tour Leaders must have wide knowledge when explaining the tourist sites. Unfortunately, I could not explain the tourist sites in detail and confused when the participants asked me about the tourist sites due to my limited knowledge. Professional Tour leader from CV Tunas Muda told me to keep learning and studying about the information regarding the tourist sites. 4. Working under pressures Working under pressure is a common thing, especially working in a travel agency because the tour agency always prioritizes customer satisfaction. I am not accustomed to work under pressure because this job needs cleverness and accuracy. Then Professional Tour Leaders of CV. Tunas Muda gave support to me to keep on working hard and patiently, so that I could work well under pressure.
