Signage Applications

Channel Letters Channel letter signs range in size and depth from a few inches to several feet. Channel letters utilize custom bent metal or plastic to fashion channels in the shape of a letter. The channel is covered with a translucent plastic face, often a colored acrylic, which is typically backlit by LEDs or neon sources mounted to the back of the channel.

Halo Signs Halo signs are channel letter signs that project light behind them, causing the light to reflect off of the sign's mounting surface creating a silhouette of the letter, or a "halo" of light. The construction of a halo letter is very similar to that of a channel letter, but the light emitted from the channel is thrown back towards the wall instead of forward through an acrylic. Halo letters may also have a backlit acrylic face in addition to the halo effect.

Box Sign Frequently free-standing and double-sided, box signs, also known as cabinet signs, exist in a variety of shapes and sizes. The face of a box sign is made of a translucent plastic and often displays colored graphics and designs made from vinyl or paint. The face is supported only by the walls of the box sign and is illuminated from behind by a light source mounted at the rear wall of the cabinet.

Point of Purchase In an environment where manufacturers are trying to differentiate themselves, a point of purchase sign is a great way to highlight products, draw attention and drive sales. In almost any retail establishment these signs are abundant, and can be found in various sizes, shapes and styles. Point of purchase signs most often utilize some form of back lighting, but occasionally utilize other forms of illumination.

Border Lighting Long, linear runs of acrylic-faced channels are often used as an architectural enhancement for many different types of border lighting. Border lighting is usually colored and typically back lit by neon, fluorescent, or LED light sources. The width and depth of the channel can vary greatly. Some border lighting use only neon tubing without being enclosed in a channel, exposed directly to the surrounding environment.

Edge Lit Edge lit signs are made of a translucent material which is illuminated by a light source placed adjacent to one or more of the edges of the sign. The light travels through the sign material and the sign lights up as the light escapes from the front, back, and sides. Edge lit signs can employ the use of colored vinyl and graphics, or can be translucent or clear with the sign message engraved in the sign material, which shines as the light is scattered when it strikes the engraving from the inside of the material.

BACKlight 2nd Generation Modules

BACKlight LED modules are ideally suited to fit the typical contours and curves used in signage. Currently, there are four versions of BACKlight available: BACKlight 2nd Generation (BL02 and BL04) and BACKlight 2nd Generation Protect (BL02 and BL04). They provide uniform illumination of diffusing materials used in signage.

LINEARlight FLEX“ Modules The LINEARlight FLEX modules offer exciting new possibilities for signage applications and for optimal solutions requiring precise backlighting of complex contours. There are currently three versions of the LINEARlight FLEX modules, TOPLED“, SIDELED“ and POWER FLEX. The TOPLED and POWER FLEX modules offer direct lighting that emits from the top of the module. The SIDELED module emits light from the side which is best suited for illuminating signage with indirect lighting. The end result is an attractive gleam of light that is seen around the contour of the sign, usually referred to as the “Corona Effect” or Halo lighting.

Beauty and efficiency. Illuminated advertising in the Yorkdale signage application. The signage at the Yorkdale Shopping Center in Toronto showcases the impressive performance of LED technology. SYLVANIA BACKlight modules provide even illumination, a pleasant light effect, and a reduction in energy consumption by 74%..

Before: The Yorkdale sign using cold cathode lamps on the front of nearly 60 foot glass atrium. Lamp failure was a persistent problem.

The 120º beam angle of the BACKlight modules allows the modules to be positioned close to the cover. This ensures uniform illumination and a thinner contour for the sign.

Approximately 1,000 BACKlight LED modules and 120 10.5Vdc 50W OPTOTRONIC® units were installed.

After: The Yorkdale sign illuminated with the LED lighting solution from SYLVANIA. Energy consumption was reduced by 74% and, equally important, the overall look was now much more attractive.
