The Chamber continues to make advocacy and education top priorities. We are working to stay abreast of the economic climate of our area and the states we call home. Further, The Chamber is keeping a constant eye on the situation in western North Dakota and how growth in the energy sector will affect our region and benefit our members. We are also monitoring how the newly upheld health care law will impact local businesses. WHITNEY

Your Chamber is dedicated to fighting for our National Guard base here in Fargo Moorhead in the wake of looming cuts to our nation’s Defense budget. Further, we are seeking to look out for the best interests of our business community. We worked hard to defeat Measure 2 this past year and now will concentrate on working with the state legislature in order to pursue tax relief and comprehensive reform of our entire tax system. We will work tirelessly to ensure that issues which affect our region are thoroughly vetted and brought to the attention of the business community and our members. And when necessary, we will take a stand on the tough issues, like we did with Measure 2. Yet we could not do all this and more without the fantastic men and women who make up the full time staff at The Chamber. Further, so much of our work is done by a force of over 300 volunteers, all from our terrific member firms. Special thanks are in order to our Board of Directors, a 16-person team of talented community leaders who are ready to help your Chamber promote economic development, prosperity and growth for our region through advocacy, education and engagement. Thanks for your membership,

Craig Whitney President/CEO The Chamber

The Technology Boom in North Dakota

It’s a different kind of “boom.” While the western side of the state is embracing the oil boom, the eastern side is going through a technology boom. On September 6, more than 300 participants discussed the future of North Dakota during the State of Technology: The Next Generation of Jobs in North Dakota. “The theme of today is energy. I don’t mean energy from the earth, but energy extracted from the human mind,” said North Dakota State University President Dean Bresciani. The State of Technology Summit featured half a day packed with panels and keynote speakers discussing the future of technology in N.D. as it affects business opportunities, education and job creation. Senator John Hoeven kicked off the afternoon with a short welcome and overview of the day. In an earlier press conference, Hoeven shared a few statistics about the state. “Right now there are 16,000 jobs in North Dakota and 60% of them are outside the oil and gas industry,” Hoeven said. “Many are in technology.” Luncheon keynote Doug Burgum, entrepreneur and venture philanthropist, spoke about the ways technology is changing how we work, live and learn. In the sphere of work, Burgum stressed that our typical definitions of a work-week aren’t necessarily valid. Many people now work as independent contractors for multiple companies. “If you’re not challenging every assumption then you’re not embracing the impact technology will have on the way we live,” Burgum said. Burgum also heralded education change. Classrooms will become more collaboration based with an emphasis on knowledge transfer versus “speaking on a stage.” Education was a key theme throughout the day with panelists. Caroline McEnnis, director of design engineering for the Teaching Institute for Excellence in STEM spoke about the ways STEM is working to change the education system. STEM advocates for an education system where students understand the material, rather than simply “passing.” “There’s a changing dynamic in the way youth interact with technology,” McEnnis explained. Don Morton, senior director at Microsoft, explained the ties of “sensible immigration” and education, using local university as an example. The region is able to attract students from all over the world to attend school but they leave as soon as they are done. Morton would like to see changes in immigration laws to help keep those intelligent students in the area after graduation. Jeff Davis, manager of enterprise evangelism at Google, talked about three significant technology trends in business: cloud computing, mobile and social. Davis explained how these technologies will change the working environment, crossing geographic and time boundaries that once limited a business’ capabilities to collaborate. Davis described it as, “Any team. Any place. Any time. Any device.” The final panel of the day looked at the way technology is driving jobs in agriculture, bio-tech, healthcare and IT. Barry Batchellor, CEO of Appareo Systems, LLC, moderated the panel. “We’re not only starting companies here, we’re expanding companies here. We may have a problem finding the talent at first, but once we find them, we keep them,” said Tom Budan, general manager of John Deere Electronic Solutions, when he was asked why the region is a great place to do business. “Build a culture of continuous improvement. Reward innovation and let people fail,” explained Michael Chambers, president/CEO of Aldeveron. Jim Traynor, director of client/channel management at Intelligent InSites, Inc. talked about the importance of a collaborative approach to recruiting seasoned talent, utilizing other businesses, the state and schools. Joel Jorgenson, CEO of Packet Digital LLC, said the key to finding talent is working locally, “the best of the best are starting from here.”

USS North Dakota (SSN-784) Crest Design Selected The crest of the USS North Dakota was unveiled at a ceremony in the Great Hall of the North Dakota capitol on August 24. Nearly 100 designs were submitted to the USS North Dakota committee for consideration, of which five were forwarded to the U.S. Navy. The final product incorporated the major themes from submissions. The ship’s motto, “Strength from the Soil, Reapers of the Deep” appropriately connects the state’s farm heritage of reapers, which cut grain in the field to the fighting spirit of the submarine. The green ribbon under the motto represents the agricultural community as well as the colors of North Dakota State University and University of North Dakota. The shape of crest is of an Indian arrowhead, representing the American Indian heritage of North Dakota. These are a few examples of a well thought out design for North Dakota’s world-class warship. Visit www.ussnd.com to learn more about the crest and find out what you can do to support the boat.

The Chamber Supports Greater Minnesota Initiatives Our Public Affairs committee recently reconfirmed The Chambers commitment to protecting and advancing programs that support a vibrant great Minnesota.

Protect Local Government Aid The value of the Local Government Aid (LGA) program to Minnesota communities and businesses has long been recognized by The Chamber as a vital source of funding. LGA builds the city’s capacity to provide the municipal services Chamber members expect while maintaining a competitive property tax rate. As preparations are made for Minnesota’s 2013 legislative session, The Chamber is committed to supporting the following: „ „

„

Continued funding for the LGA program at its current level or greater; A new or revised LGA formula that evaluates all communities based on their needs relative to their available property tax base to meet those needs. A new or revised LGA formula which continues to reduce rather than increase disparities amongst communities and which helps greater Minnesota businesses grow and thrive.

Grow Economic Development Opportunities Population shifts, property taxes and other demographic variables between greater Minnesota and the Twin Cities metro area calls for a fresh look at economic development policies targeted to the needs of greater Minnesota communities. Therefore, The Chamber supports legislative proposals focused on addressing greater Minnesota economic development needs that: „ „ „

„

Continue the Greater Minnesota Business Development Infrastructure Grant Program and increases funding above current levels; Invests in transportation infrastructure that facilitates economic development; Targets workforce training and development efforts in greater Minnesota through encouraging companies to hire interns and which assists with the cost of training new employees; Increases greater Minnesota companies’ access to capital and ensures funding from state programs such as the Angel Investment Tax Credit are spread throughout the whole state and not concentrated predominately in the metro area.

Business Training Providing “Wow” Customer Service to Each Generation I was recently at a family dinner at a restaurant where the five generations of our family were present. There were the great-grandparents of the veteran generation, the boomer grandparents, us Xers (my husband and I), my Gen Y sister-in-law, and my “yet to be named” generation daughter. The “Greats” are in their upper 80s and early 90s, the “Grands” are in their 50s and 60’s, we are in our mid-30s, the “Auntie” is in her 20s, and our baby is 18 months old.

GOODYEAR

As each generation is unique and defined by the defining events of their time, the interaction was what could be expected. The “Greats” boxed up their extra food, the “Grands” paid for the dinner, we Xers felt uncomfortable with the non-independence of paying for our meal, the Yer spent some time texting, and the baby ruled us all.

Why were these events expected? As multiple sources will tell us, the defining events from each generation give us an insight into how they act and perceive the world. While these findings are generalities, which may not apply to each generational member, certain assumptions can be made. Veteran Generation Members of the veteran (or often called “silent”) generation grew up during or soon after WWII. This generation dealt with the effects of the stock market crash of 1929, ransom stamps, victory gardens, and doing with less to forward the war effort. Their generation grew up with the “hide your money under the mattress” mindset and a RHIP (Rank Has Its Privileges) manner of business that was to be followed. Boomer Generation The members of this generation were the first to experience “town life” and “money at will.” This generation was able to spend time (at first) dancing to Bill Clark and later promoting “Woodstock” to their friends. This was a generation of free will and free love; now a generation of teamwork. Boomers believe in team work and hold meetings with team members to provide ideas. Gen Xers The members of this generation are pretty self-reliant. They were the first generation to experience multi-working families and, as such, became known as the “Latch-Key Kids.” As a member of this generation, I identify with the working dual family working parents and the “figure it out” and “REALLY” explanations when you screwed up. Our Boomer working parents were gone a lot, but held the high expectations of the previous generation. Gen Yers/Millenials This generation is often called the generation of the “parachute parents.” They are often kids of the late boomers or early Xers, who have been a part of the “soccer mom” revolution. Characteristics of this generation include team dependencies, group think, and amazing problem solving skills. This is a generation that has been engulfed since current technology has been adopted, and has adapted to it at razor speed. This group won’t ask “why are we doing this” but instead “why aren’t we doing this faster.” Wow Customer Service At the September Chamber Business Training Panel on customer service, one speaker commented that every organization claims to give good customer service, but not many do. While this is true, my question was “We all want to provide great customer service, so why do we miss the mark?” In my October 3rd session, we will explore this question and look specifically at how understanding generational diversity can help to provide the “wow” in customer service. We will also focus on answering the following questions: „ What can we do to support our internal and external customers based upon their generational expectations? „ How can we get all employees engaged in learning and using their generational diversity knowledge to create better customer experiences? „ Who is my target demographic and what are their needs? The session will be both interactive and (I hope) fun. Register at FMWFChamber.com or call 218.233.1100. PATH: The Need for Foster Families in North Dakota PATH ND, Inc., a private nonprofit child and family services agency, works to “help kids and families achieve lifelong successes,” according to Chris Martin, MSSW, LICSW, social work supervisor for PATH. The organization achieves this through a model based around a family centered approach to treatment. The ultimate goal of PATH is to find a permanent home for foster children. Choices may be reunification with family, adoption, aging out of care, etc. In 2010, PATH provided services to 1,056 youth and families in North Dakota. There are currently 360 treatment level foster families in the state of North Dakota and 130 in Region 5 (Fargo and surrounding area). In order to keep foster children in the state, PATH has set a goal to increase the total number of foster families in Region 5 by 20. To achieve this goal, they will need 40 to 45 new families to join the program, as there are typically 20 or more families who drop from the program every year due to retirement, adoption, moving out of the region, etc. Martin points out, “Anyone can consider becoming a foster parent from a professional to a stay at home mom to a home daycare provider; people who are single, married or in a committed relationship. They can live in a house or an apartment.” To qualify, participants need to minimally: „ „ „ „ „

Be at least 21 years old. Live in ND. Have adequate space in your home for an additional child. Complete the necessary licensing process and mandatory PATH training (32 hours per year.) Enjoy children or as Martin says “find satisfaction in helping [children] heal and grow.”

PATH requires more training than is required in regular foster care. This is because PATH is considered treatment level where children require the help of trained foster parents to help them cope with difficult circumstances. PATH helps to coordinate the required trainings as well as working with both the foster parents and birth parents to help orchestrate the permanency plan. Due to the higher levels of training and care required by PATH, the per diem allotment for foster parents is $42 per day, per child to help with living expenses and required care. PATH foster parents also choose the children they bring into their home through an extensive matching process. There is a “critical need” according to Martin for qualified foster parents in the area.

2012 ChamberChoice Small Not-for-Profit of the Year: Originally printed in the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead’s ChamberChoice special insert Freedom Resource Center for Independent Living, Inc. wants to be the bridge to people’s independence, and since 1989, they’ve been doing just that. As part of a disability rights organization that serves people with any disability at any age, Freedom’s staffers are on a mission to make life more accessible for people of all abilities. Since 1989, they have been working toward gaining equality and inclusion for people with disabilities through programs of empowerment, community education and systems change. Freedom has been a Chamber member for 16 years and appreciates the networking opportunities available through The Chamber. Executive Director Nate Aalgaard says he appreciates the recognition of being named the 2012 ChamberChoice Small Not-for-Profit of the Year. He says it’s great that an organization like Freedom that is a bit “under the radar” is getting recognized and getting its name out in the community. Aalgaard says that what sets his organization apart is that it is people with disabilities helping other people with disabilities to live their best lives. One important service Freedom provides is peer mentoring. A person who is newly disabled is paired with someone “who has been around the block a few times and gotten used to living with a disability” to share information and “help through the rough spots.” There is no charge for Freedom’s services, and they are willing to help any person of any age with any disability. In 2011, 574 people received direct support through Freedom’s services in North Dakota and Minnesota, but their doors are open to anyone in the community who might have a disability-related question.
