Chairman’s Report - AGM 2016 2016 has been a year of change for the Voice. This time last year Michael Kaye was still with us as Treasurer and things seemed to be on a more or less settled course. However, fate dictated otherwise and he passed away after a short illness last February. Soon after this blow, Catrina told us that she would have to stop being our copy editor because of other commitments. Luckily she told us that she had a successor in mind and we were able to welcome Lynne McGowan who, in her turn, was able to suggest Mel McFadden as a treasurer to succeed Michael. Barbara and Paul Prettyman retired as distributors of the Voice at last year’s AGM. They had worked steadfastly on this aspect of the Voice’s existence for some years and we are all grateful to them for their efforts. We are also very glad that, in Alistair Scrymgeour, they picked a colleague and successor who was already fully in command of the subject. This brings to mind our debt to the Voiceteers as the people who take the newsletter to the readership. Thank you Voiceteers! Mel McFadden signed on as treasurer on a temporary footing, which some of us forgot quickly in the hope that she would stay, but it was not to be. Happily one of our pleas for help in ‘The Voice’ turned up Jan George as a successor. Welcome to you, Jan! There came a time in the year when it seemed that certain members of the old team had almost receded to the back benches. Luckily this turned out not to be the case and it was with a great sense of relief to me that Derek and Pamela returned to activity after what I saw as a period of mourning for Derek’s brother-in-law and Pamela’s uncle, Michael. For some time it has been apparent that we need back up. Apart from young Pamela we are, if not actually old, getting on in that direction, so it was with that in mind that we felt we must try to recruit people to provide back up in case of illness, or absence from the district for whatever reason. This reminds me that Pamela was dealing with correspondence about advertising while on holiday recently. We decided that we must run a recruitment campaign and thought that this meeting should be the start of it. AGMs are not normally a suitable moment for discussing plans, as I understand it, but this is a small start - a firing of the gun as it were. Today I received an email from Ann Hooper who has retired from working as a teacher in London and come with her husband to live in Alyth. Ann has offered her services to us and I am looking forward to seeing where she would fit in most happily. Thank you to all of you in the Voice team, to all those who made donations to ‘The Voice’, to our advertisers, and a special thank you to everybody who has turned out tonight. to offer their support. Your support will allow the voice to continue for hopefully many years to come. We are so lucky to have such outstandingly talented people in our town. Watch this space for information on our bigger fuller team. Well, folks, it's onward and upward into 2017! Paul Ramsay

EDITORS LETTER HAVE YOU SEEN A WILD BOAR?

Perth & Kinross Council and Scottish Natural Heritage are asking people in and around Alyth to report any sightings or signs of wild boar or similar feral or wild pigs. There have been some sightings on Alyth Hill but information about the distribution of these animals is limited and the Council and SNH want to learn whether they are moving into new territory, and to estimate how many animals are at large. Members of the public are asked to notify any sightings to Animal Welfare staff at Perth & Kinross Council by calling their general enquiry line 01738 476476. Alternatively you can submit records through the iRecord website: http://www.brc.ac.uk/irecord/ Or use the Mammal Tracker app, available from app stores for either Android or Apple devices. As well as sightings of the animals themselves, they would also like to know where signs of rooting and ground damage appear. Earlier in the year Forest Enterprise who manage land at Alyth Hill put up signs to inform walkers of the presence of wild pigs and believe that they currently have a population of between 20 and 40 animals. Others have been seen outside their fence and possibly several miles away. It is also thought that some wild pigs are being shot by farmers or gamekeepers. Any wild pigs that have been shot should be tested for the presence of the parasite Trichinella. Although the parasite can be killed by thoroughly cooking meat products it is recommended that carcasses are tested in accordance with the Food Standards Agency guidance. http://www.foodstandards.gov.scot/sites/default/files/trichinellatestingwildboar.pdf http://www.foodstandards.gov.scot/sites/default/files/Scotland%20Revised%20Guidance%20-%20September%202015.pdf Various agencies including SNH, Forest Enterprise and Perth & Kinross Council will soon be meeting with farmer and landowner representatives and other local interests to try and find an agreed approach to managing wild pigs in the area. Alyth Youth Partnership It’s been all go at AYP with lots of activities going on, and lots more in the pipeline. Firstly, a massive thank you to everyone who contributed to our coffee morning - we raised a fantastic £686.90, which has allowed us to continue providing activities for the young people, and buy equipment for the clubs. The Youth Club, having enjoyed the series of drama workshops with Perth Youth Theatre, made 2 trips to Perth Concert Hall to turn their drama piece into a film which was shown at the youth theatre showcase in November. Their focus is now on Christmas of course, and they've been enjoying arts and crafts with Anna lately. The Girls Group enjoyed their trip to the Ice Disco in Forfar, and we have to say a big thank you to Chis McLaren for helping with the driving - he’ll be called in to action again soon I’m sure! Eilidh McLauchlan has been helping out at our clubs, and teaching the kids some great dance moves. These will be on show when we hold our next event - Alyth’s Got Talent! Details to follow in the next copy of the Voice! In January, the Hubsters will start working with Marian Bruce on the Storybox Project which will culminate in May with a brilliant asset to the community. Talking of community assets, Marian, Clare and the Development Trust team have more great ideas which we are really excited to be part of. Before all that, a team of young people have agreed to assist me in putting on a Christmas Concert in the Town Hall on December 11th, and they will be selling refreshments and raffle tickets. The proceeds will be shared between AYP and Perthshire Brass. This winter we will be resurrecting the Snow Patrol when young people will be out and about helping clear paths for those not able to do so themselves. Should we get a big dump of snow, as a matter of course we plan to clear the Burnside Court area and as many routes to local amenities as possible. If you would like us to add your address to our rounds please give me a call on 07702 780489, or drop in to the Hub and let us know. As Christmas approaches, we would like to take a moment to thank everyone in the community for the tremendous support we have received this year. We have had some great times, made lasting memorise, and 2017 is shaping up to be a cracker too - it makes our work so much more enjoyable when we feel like we have the community behind us, and we certainly do. Congratulations to the Voice Team for the continued production of such a high quality newsletter - we will do our best to support this in 2017.

Guides sleepover! This was our first sleepover in the new hut. We had lots of fun at the sleepover. First, we came in and got into our groups, Italy, France and Mexico. Our theme for the weekend was ‘Around the World.’ Next we made badges of our countries and then each made our own pizza for tea. We waited for it to get dark then did a treasure hunt in the garden with our torches. It was amazing! After we had finished the treasure hunt we went back inside and played bingo! We had hot chocolate and toast and then went to bed. On Sunday morning, we had breakfast at 8am with eggy bread, toast or cereal. We then played games and had some time to chill before lunch. We had lunch and then sang some songs before it was time to go home. We had the best time. Rachael, Lily, Charley and Lucy. 1st Alyth Guides meet every Wednesday at 6.30pm-8.00pm in the Guide Hut for girls aged 10-14, new starts welcome!

ALYTH GOLF CLUB TAKE OVER 9 HOLE COURSE FROM GLENISLA "We have agreed to take over the back 9 holes, which I feel are the better 9, and this will open up significant golfing opportunities to existing members of Alyth Golf Club, whilst offering a lifeline to the Glenisla members. We will be offering our normal packages at Alyth plus a 9 hole membership at Glenisla, and more excitingly a 27 holes membership for both courses which will operate out of the Alyth clubhouse, using the old 15th tee opposite the car park as the 1st hole for the Glenisla course.. For Alyth as a town this is great news, it keeps up the golfing choices, and currently there is a major drive to introduce 9 hole golf competitions by Scottish Golf. What better way to offer this. which is being highlighted by various golfing bodies as the way ahead, as busy people can readily fit in 9 holes, when 18 is sometimes too long a window. It also brings a bit of employment to the area whilst retaining leisure facilities in the green belt around the town. Along with our new driving bays which will be in place during the winter months, plus our tie in with Forfar Golf Club, the 27 holes will give the members of Alyth and visitors a fantastic package, one to be proud of, and which will take the club up to the next level. It will open doors to people wanting to get into golf, whether juniors, seniors or anyone in between. The less intimidating nature of a 9 hole facility, will assist people taking their early steps as a golfer. Its just an initial one year lease but we hope this is a success and keeps golfers on the track for generations. A fantastic opportunity." Dave Barclay Marketing Convener Alyth Golf Club

Thrifty One

From the Community, for the Community Opening times: 10am—4pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday Phone: Anne 07592 338449.(speak or leave a message) Facebook message on our page: Thrifty One Email: [email protected] For those of you who use social media , you can find us as Thrifty One. Please like & share us with your friends. The more folk who know about us, the more funds we can raise. Thanks! Well we can hardly believe it, (so much so that we forgot to include it in the last newsletter), but we have been open just over a year now! The volunteers decided to celebrate by offering a free raffle ticket with every purchase & donation. The window has been decked with balloons, bunting and prizes. Thank you to everyone who has helped to bring Thrifty One from a tentative start to where we are now, a thriving little community shop. Alyth people have filled the shelves with their generous and hugely varied donations. Alyth people have become our valued regular customers. A team of Alyth people give of their time, energy and enthusiasm to run the shop. In return Thrifty One has been able to support a variety of local groups and causes, either in funds, raffle prizes, or goods. Please do come forward if you have an idea of how or whom we can help. The volunteers have decided to give the last £250 donation of the year to Alyth Senior Citizens’ Lunch & Socialising club. One of our success stories is a personalised finding service. A quick look at our back shop wall would show a list of items, names and phone numbers. We keep one gentleman supplied in 100% wool jumpers! We are on the lookout for a typewriter for another customer. There are several authors we keep an eye open for. Generally with time we are able to fulfil most requests. It is satisfying to be able to make that phone call to say the wished for item has appeared amongst our donations! As I write this it is snowing outside (just a sprinkle), winter is all but upon us. Time to decorate our windows for the festive season! The brief Anne has set us all is to use only items from our stock, recycled or upcycled items. So the ‘tree’ was made by Andy from pre-used timber;. The star came from SCRAPantics in Dundee (a social enterprise committed to recycling industry excess into art & design materials) having had a previous life in the window of one of the big Dundee stores. The rag wreaths were made using donated fabrics or clothing. And all the Christmas decorations you have donated over the last year will be brought up from the cellar and put to good use! We will be closing for two weeks over Christmas and the New Year. Our last working day before Christmas will be Friday 23 rd December. We reopen on Monday 9th January 2017. Thrifty One sends a Merry Christmas to you all & the Very Best wishes for the New Year.

ALYTH CREATES... a new venture intended to promote Alyth as a visitor and tourist destination. Alyth has always had a strong community spirit and friendliness. ‘Alyth Creates’... will be a three day community event which aims to showcase the creative talent in the area, its rich heritage, and the beauty of the natural environment. It is hoped this will increase visitor numbers and have the knock-on effect of creating new business and employment opportunities making for a more vibrant town. A place to be! Alyth Arts and Crafts Guild are initiating this event to take place the 26th-28th May 2017, mainly in the Town Hall, but with extended events around the town such as music, film, arts trail and food events. The Town Hall would be given over mainly for the selling of Arts and Crafts with demonstrations and workshops by local artists and crafts people, with other venues around the town for fringe activities such as music, film and food. These would be dependent on the interest and support of the local community, businesses and organisations and we hope that you like the idea. If you are a local artist, craft worker, group, club, organisation or business and would like to know more or be interested in taking part in this event, please contact Ron McGill on T: 01828 634114; M: 07762 061384 or E: [email protected] or Lesley Garside on M: 07739 463594; E: [email protected]

MUSICAL NOTES

Hannah Oosterhoorn introduces two new members to the production team of Colin Grant, Musical Director and Gemma Pride, Producer. Hannah took a major part in Alyth Musical Society’s 2015 Production of Blitz. The two young men, both local are James Atkinson from Alyth on the left and Alex Tosh, New Alyth on the right. Whisky Galore is proving to be a very funny Musical as rehearsals continue to go well. Auditions have been held and most of the parts are now allocated, so everyone will know what they are doing. We are still looking for more people, so if you find yourself with a free Monday night, please come along to the Ogilvie Rooms at 7.30pm. Our Beetle Drive was a great night with lots of laughs and fun. Very funny to watch adults becoming so animated, but it took the children to show them how it's done! Thanks to all who attended the evening. May we take this opportunity to wish you all a Very Happy Christmas. 10

The Isla Parishes (SC031461) The Harvest Thanksgiving and Remembrance Sunday Services were conducted by elders and members of the congregation and the fact both services were led by our "ain" folk with respect and dignity for the church building was really lovely. Coffee morning at Airlie Street Hall, Alyth It was all hands on deck in the run up to the coffee morning in Alyth on 29th October. The support received was amazing, with cake bakers, coffee pourers, those who manning the stalls and gifts of raffle prizes, books and tombola prizes by the score. £917.15 was raised for banking, and with a very generous donation, the final total was over £1,000 - a really fabulous figure and a reflection of the enormous amount of work that everyone put in. It was very hectic and busy and everybody worked very, very hard, but it was also great fun and there was much laughter. A huge thank you to all involved especially the people of Alyth who were so supportive to us. Our Family Ceilidh will be in Glenisla Hall on Friday 25th November with Jim Brown's Band. Tickets are priced at £6.00 for adults and £3.00 for primary school children to include a light supper are available from Hazel Thom on 01828 632562 or Jenny.Ralston 01575 560250 or on the door. Christmas Tree Exhibition After the success of last year exhibition, there will be a similar event this year and will be held in the Isla Parishes Church, Kilry on Friday 9th December 2016 between 7pm and 9pm and on Saturday, 10th December 2016 between 12 noon and 4pm. Local organisations and businesses will be displaying Christmas trees in all sorts of shapes, sizes and forms. The general public viewing the trees will have the opportunity to vote on their favourite exhbit taking account of: decorative effect, originality, ingenuity and reflecting the exhibitor’s particular interests. There is a small fun prize for the winners. There will be a donations box for our chosen charities, mentioned below in dates for your diary. The “T Junction” Café will be open for refreshments in Kilry Hall at the same times as the church is open.

Cateran’s Common Wealth

celebrating and sustaining the things that belong to all of us 2017 sees the launch of Cateran’s Common Wealth, a programme of arts, cultural & heritage activities & events around the Cateran Trail aimed at celebrating and sustaining our common wealth – the things that belong to all of us. Four years in the making, fundraising has now been secured for a first phase of three projects, all of which have been designed to engage local people and visitors and tie in with the 2017 Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology. In this first of two articles for the Voice, Alyth residents Marian Bruce and Clare Cooper, co-producers of the projects explain the background to two of them.

The Story Box The Story Box project aims to capture the history and spirit of Alyth by recording the stories, songs, poems and everyday sounds of the town. Recordings of local people sharing their memories from the past as well as current stories about people who live and work here will be collected into an oral history archive of the town. Already more than 100 stories have been offered for the project from people living in Alyth and we are looking for more. Do you have an interesting memory of your childhood or school days or a story form your workplace or about the shops in Alyth? We are looking for the everyday stories, the ones that wouldn’t always be reported in The Voice but tell the real life of the town. Maybe you remember something strange or spooky happening or have a silly story about your family that you could share? We would love to hear stories from anyone who does (or has in the past) lived in Alyth so please get in touch to share and record your memories. We are also running sound workshops for the young people of the town to help them record their ideas about what the Alyth of the future might be like and write new songs that will be recorded for the project. Working with digital artists from NEoN in Dundee and the Ceilidhmakers from Kirriemuir, young people at Alyth Primary School and Alyth Youth Partnership will get the chance to learn how to write songs, learn about sound and how to digitally record and mix it to create the sound-scape of the future. Once the stories have been recorded they will be available to hear in a red phone box in Alyth Market Square. Just like entering Dr Who’s tardis you will be able to move backwards in time, hearing stories from different times in the town’s history – you will even be able to go forwards in time and enter Alyth of the future as imagined by our young people. We box will be launched with the first stories in the Market Square in May 2017 but we will be adding new stories over the 2 coming years. The oral history content from the project will be archived in Perth and Kinross Museums and with the Scottish Archives at the Library of Scotland, so that our Alyth will be preserved for future generations. If you would like to be involved please get in touch on 01828 632816 or 07917 430200.

PHOTOGRAPHY Send us your photographs. We would like to have a “Your Photos” page each month. Make sure you give us the title of your photo, location and date it was taken and who it was taken by. We reserve the right not to publish any material that may be offensive to other readers.

“Lintrathen” 4.15pm on 24-11-16 by Gordon Kidd 23

A Story of the Cateran Trail in 100 Objects Inspired by Neil MacGregor’s superb ‘History of the World in 100 Objects’ in the British Museum, this project invites the people who live and work around the Cateran Trail and those who visit, to propose objects that tell an important part of the story of this part of Scotland across history and into the present day.

Typically, an object is a material thing that can be seen and touched, but we are broadening that definition to include places, landscapes and people as well as objects relating to them. You can go to the website: www.cateranstory.org.uk and suggest something or someone that you think tells an important part of the story of this part of Scotland by uploading a photograph and some text to explain why you think it is important. Your object might be anything from a tattie creel to your favourite view from the Cateran Trail, a place with an incredible story like Barry Hill or person that you think has played or is playing an important role in the area. In April 2017, a Community Panel, Chaired by one of the Founders of the Cateran Trail, Bob Ellis, will decide which objects will make the final 100 and in the summer there will be an Exhibition about the project in the Alyth Museum.

Who is involved Cateran’s Common Wealth is being developed collaboratively between Alyth’s very own Alyth Youth Partnership, Alyth Family History Project, Alyth Community Council, Perth & Kinross Countryside Trust, Perth & Kinross Heritage Trust, digital art specialists North East of North (NEoN) based in Dundee, Horsecross Arts from Perth and Company Chordelia, based in Glasgow. The original idea crystallised out of conversations between Alyth residents Clive Bowman, Clare Cooper and Marian Bruce and Perth & Kinross Countryside Trust back in 2013. Since then, a year long research and development period took place in 2014, which consulted with people from around the Cateran Trail about the kind of programme ideas that might be of interest. Since then, it has taken two hard years of fundraising to finance these first three projects. Dozens of applications and pitches were made over half of which were rejected, but those who have committed funding include the Heritage Lottery Fund, Gannochy Trust, Creative Scotland, LEADER, the Postcode Lottery Trust and Perth & Kinross Council. You can find out lots more about the background to the project at www.commonculture.org.uk

SCOUTS - BEAVERS - CUBS Following one of these infernal updates to my computer, it came as little surprise that I couldn’t find the photos I had just downloaded. They were eventually tracked down in some obscure folder, but my investigations found me trawling through previous photographs from 2016 amongst other files. The photos revealed such a vast range of activities at numerous locations and one of the common denominators were smiling faces throughout. It made me reflect on how many people were involved in making these events happen. To my fellow Leaders, of whom I am in awe at their creativity and dedication, the members of our committees who provide us with the resources, the community who support our fund raising and other events, the parents whose support is essential and all the others who willingly give their time and talents for the Movement. Above all are the young people we serve. Well done to them for the enthusiasm and dedication in engaging in the activities. Give yourself a pat on the back ….fairly low down! Yes , 2016 has turned out to be a belter!!! The Beavers and Cubs have been engaged with preparations for their Halloween parties. The Cubs took particular delight is manufacturing spider decorations which sacred the living daylights out of everyone. The parties passed with suitable dressing up and party games. Our poor minister Mike Erskine got the unenviable task of picking the best/worst/horrible character – a position fraught with contradictions and dangers The Young Leaders who are working with the Scouts ran a programme which included a similar theme , whereby the patrol had to dress up one of their members in fancy dress using only a limited amount of materials. I don’t know who looked worse, the guy they dressed up ….or the dressers – a close call ! This month had one of the brightest moons for 70 years and of course it rained the night of the wide game. We hastily relocated to the Haugh, and despite the overcast night, everyone managed to get covered in mud and got thoroughly soaked when the heavens opened up on our way back to the Scout Hut. At least that’s what happened to me , but I doubt if our charges noticed. The Young Leaders have their own training programme to follow, and I am delighted to note that James Atkinson has now completed his entire training and carried out his missions under the scheme. This will entitle him to wear a Young Leaders Belt and Badge which will be the first for our Group. Others are taking part and I hope they will have the drive to complete this as well. James will have a problem as not only will he be entitled to wear his Young Leaders Belt, he will also be shortly awarded his Explorer Belt along with the other Explorer Scouts who completed this in Germany. Didn’t I say it was a belter? From everyone in the Scout Group a very big thank you for 2016 and we can’t wait for 2017 !!! ALYTH FILM CLUB Autumn Showings at the Ogilvy Rooms

Sunday 18th December 7.30pm It’s a Wonderful Life PG Director Frank Capra's classic bittersweet comedy/drama about George Bailey (James Stewart), the eternally-in-debt guiding force of a bank in the typical American small town of Bedford Falls. As the film opens, it's Christmas Eve, 1946, and George, who has long considered himself a failure, faces financial ruin and arrest and is seriously contemplating suicide. High above Bedford Falls, two celestial voices discuss Bailey's dilemma and decide to send down eternally bumbling angel Clarence Oddbody (Henry Travers), who after 200 years has yet to earn his wings, to help George out. Start your Christmas celebrations with Alyth Film Club screening of the Christmas classic “It’s Wonderful Life” Starring James Stewart and Donna Reed Sunday 18th December, Ogilvie Rooms Doors open 7.15 for a 7.30 start **** Mulled wine and mince pies **** This screening is in aid of the community-led oral history project “The Story Box”.
