POLICY: It is the policy of Carondelet Health to provide a therapeutic learning environment for students. PROCEDURE: 1. Designated nurse educators will serve as the contact-person-on-site for nursing student affiliations. All contracts will be processed through CH Risk Management at St. Joseph Medical Center. 2. Designated nurse educator will be responsible for identifying the following when contacted by the school: • number and level of students • length of clinical rotation • departments desired for clinical experience • objectives of experience and shared with appropriate persons • validation of a current contract for Carondelet Health • approval for requested experience if confirmed by nurse manager/leadership 3. If no current contract exists: • The designated nurse educator investigates request. The recommendations and request for approval or disapproval is sent to Director of Nursing Professional Practice and the CNO. If approved, the nurse educator contacts the CH Risk Management office at SJMC with appropriate information for contract submission. 4. Prior to beginning the clinical experience, all nursing instructors will be oriented to the facility.

5. Each new group of nursing students shall be provided with orientation materials. This orientation will include, but is not limited to: computer documentation, the CH Mission, patient confidentiality/HIPAA and safety information. Each student nurse will sign the CH Patient Confidentiality form and Clinical Rotation Agreement. These forms will then be given to the designated nurse educator. 6. During the clinical experiences, the instructor from the school will be present on site (this may not include students in all clinical rotations). The instructor has overall responsibility for the students. The nursing student instructor will review the documentation prior to the student leaving each day. 7. The Professional Development Council will annually evaluate existing nursing school affiliations and nursing program quality. 8. Nursing instructors and students will abide by the policies and procedures of Carondelet Health. See The CH HIPAA Student Access to PHI policy. 9. Shadowing experiences are coordinated through an education coordinator.
