1ST Annual STEM Conference pathways available in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics), as well as to motivate them to pursue STEM courses in middle school and high school, ultimately leading to more STEM college students. The conference opened with an inspiring keynote speaker Luke Dubord, Avionics System Engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. He engaged students with his presentation on the Curiosity Mars Science Laboratory Rover that successfully landed on Mars on August 5 th, 2012. The conference consisted of several workshops that incorporated several STEM fields such as solar

energy, electricity, and geometry. At the workshops, students learned about different uses of the sun’s energy and built solar-powered toys and a solar-powered dollhouse. Students also saw an exciting demonstration of a Telsa Coil and learned about electricity from the past to the present. This conference was made possible by the generous grant from Southern California Edison and collaboration between LISTA (Latinos in Information Sciences and Technology Association), SME, and the Cerritos College STEM Club.

Telsa coils were used to conduct innovative experiments in electrical lighting, x-ray generation, and the transmission of electrical energy without wires.

Middle School Students WIN GOLD at SkillsUSA Competition Pathway Programs Department took two middle school students, Aadil Kher & Muhammad Siddiqui, to participate in the SkillsUSA California 46 th Annual State Leadership Conference in San Diego, CA. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry representatives, working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA has a long tradition of developing leaders in career and technical education. The students participated in the Urban Search and Rescue contest, where they had to design and program their robot, and have the robot perform various tasks. In addition, these students

Other Pathway Programs Spring Events Non-Traditional Careers for Women Conference On April 26 th, Pathway Programs Department held its 1 st Annual Non-Traditional Careers for Women Conference. The theme of this year’s conference is “You Can Be Anything You Want To Be!” This conference welcomed 60 young women from Downey High School, Warren High School, Bellflower High School, Artesia High School, and Gahr High School.

introduce girls to various industries, which have 25% or fewer female employees. Some of these fields included trades in technology, science, skilled construction, utility, and maintenance. Our hope is that women in these fields can achieve economic independence and security in their future.

The conference opened with a motivating keynote speaker, Virginia Martinez. Throughout her professional career, Virginia has been an active member of SkillsUSA. She was a competitor, a student state officer, a national officer, a California State officer trainer, and currently serves as the California SkillsUSA Event Coordinator. The purpose of the conference was to

Robotics Clubs Competition On May 4 th students from the Cerritos College Robotics Club competed against each other. The students built robots that had to navigate a small course that consisted of 10 turns marked by nine water bottles each with a ball on top. Hitting a water bottle and knocking a ball down resulted in the loss of one point. Julio Guzman’s, Pathway Programs robotics instructor, stated the competition’s objective was to have these students develop a machine that could do specific tasks, such as disarming a bomb. Guzman’s overall goal for students in the Robotics Club is to design robots that could function in real world situations. These students learned valuable life skills, such as working under pressure and working as a team. This competition was sponsored through funds from Southern California Edison. With this grant funding, Pathway Programs Department was able to create a year long Robotics Club for these students.

also had to do an oral presentation, a written test, and create an engineering notebook. These two outstanding students placed GOLD and will participate in the national conference, which is in Kansas City, Missouri this summer.

No donation is too small. All donations will fund programs and activities for K-12 students. To donate electronically go to: http://www.teamworkfundraising.net/cerritos/donation/cerritos _donation.html

These workshops were designed to teach junior high & high school students the fundamentals of Storyboarding. 10 students learned how to organize their artistic projects by brainstorming, placing, and arranging their ideas on storyboards, making their projects visually appealing. Cerritos College Fine Arts professor Steven M. Hirohama instructed this class and helped these students tap into their creative roots.

The Architectural Design Workshop will teach students how to integrate engineering and architecture, blend innovative architectural designs, and use cutting-edge engineering technologies. Begins Monday, July 1st & ends Thursday, July 26th.

Career Exploration Workshops These workshops will teach students how to identify careers of interest, research careers using reliable web resources, understand their personality strengths as related to careers, and connect college

majors to long term career planning. Two workshops will be offered separately to middle school and high school students. Please contact for additional information.

SolidWorks Workshops Pathway Programs will offer workshops to local middle school and high school students this summer. In this workshop, students focus on the visualization and creation of 3-D computer generated models and their applications in today's manufacturing industries. Students are instructed in the principles of 3-D modeling using SolidWorks software. Please contact for additional information.

Please contact Pathway Programs if you are interested in robotics.
