NPSHA: Net Positive Suction Head Available. This is the total suction head provided by the system to feed the centrifugal pump. NPSHA can change as a system ages or undergoes modification. Never assume that the NPSHA of the original installation is unchanged. Margin: The difference between NPSHA and NPSHR. This must always be a positive number. If the margin is negative, system changes must be made or a pump with lower NPSHR must be chosen.

Head: The term used to express pressure in a centrifugal pump system in feet of liquid. When expressed in Feet of H2O, one Foot of Head = .43 PSI. NPSHR: Net Positive Suction Head Required. A value provided by the manufacturer that specifies a centrifugal pump’s feed requirement in order to prevent cavitation.
