Centennial High School Dance Team Guidelines The Centennial Dance Team will provide a rewarding experience and a fantastic avenue to get involved in athletics and school spirit. This activity and its facilitator will strive to instill character, selfdiscipline, self-esteem, and teamwork. Accompanying these advantages are also many physical, financial, and time demands that you must be aware of. These guidelines are set up to help you understand the commitments that are involved when one becomes a part of this program. They will serve as the official set of rules from which the program operates. These rules will be strongly adhered to for the benefit of the team. The coach and administration of CHS reserve the right to modify these guidelines as deemed necessary throughout the season. PURPOSE  To highlight the dance skills of CHS students through routines that include but are not limited to pom, hip-hop, jazz, and step routines.  To promote and uphold school spirit and good sportsmanship.  To support the athletics at CHS through our performances at home games and assemblies.  To represent CHS to the highest degree.  To enhance the reputation of Centennial in the community. SELECTION  The dance team does not have a set number of members. The team numbers will be decided once tryouts have taken place.  Selection is based on the listed criteria as stated on the tryout information sheet. REQUIREMENTS AND REGULATIONS  Every CHS Dance Team member must have a current physical on file before they can try out for the team.  Dance Team adheres to the eligibility guidelines of TSSAA sports. Therefore, students must have passed at least 10- ½ credits at the end of the spring semester to be eligible to dance on the team.  If a student has been in ISS during the current school year, that student may not try out unless they speak personally to the coach prior to tryout clinics.  Dancers must abide by all other rules set down by the coach. Any problems or questions should be discussed immediately with the coach. The coach will handle all violations of regulations with the assistance of the athletic director, assistant principals and/or the principal, if needed. ATTENDANCE The season begins after tryouts and ends the date of the following year’s tryouts. Attendance is mandatory at all times and is extremely important to how the team thrives and performs. Members are required to be at every scheduled event and to be on time. Events shall include, but not be restricted to: practices, football and basketball home game performances, pep rallies, competitions, summer camp, meetings, fundraising activities, and any community service events. Dancers will not be allowed to miss any scheduled performances without prior permission from the coach; otherwise the dancer is subject to suspension and/or dismissal from the team. The coach must be the one and only person you or a parent notifies when you cannot be at a practice session or a performance. If the coach is not contacted, it will be considered an unexcused absence. Dancers are expected to be at football and basketball game performances 30 minutes before the game begins. After performing at half time of the events the team will sit together in the stands until the end of the event. If a dancer is on the spirit squad, they will need to talk with the coach to work out the logistics.

Practices: A spring and summer schedule will be announced after tryouts. We will have a few practices throughout the summer in order to prepare our home routine for the camp competition. Next fall will pick back up with practices on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM at CHS. An additional practice will be held at a nearby studio every week to work on technique skills. If the team is not prepared for a performance, there is a possibility that extra practices will be scheduled. Summer camp will be held at Tennessee Tech University on June 16th-19th. Competition dates are TBA. We will attend two competitions in November, including the TSSAA State Dance Championship. This year, we would also like to attend the National Dance Team Championship in Orlando, FL in January 2016. Dates to remember:  March 11th-13th  March 24th  March 27th      

This includes fulfilling the role appointed to the dancer by the coach. Each team member must constantly be a strong representative of the program and a positive reflection of his/her teammates. Because members represent the school, exemplary behavior is mandatory at all times in the community and at any function where students can be recognized as representatives of Centennial High School. Abusive, uncontrollable, irresponsible or any form of negative behavior IN or OUT of school as well as on social media IS NOT tolerated! This includes drug and/or alcohol usage, smoking or use of other tobacco products, fighting, vulgarity, vandalism, stealing, excessive PDA or arrest in the community. Moral standards and character are of the utmost importance to this organization and will be regarded as a high priority of all its members. A dancer may face immediate dismissal from the team if the dancer or the parent exhibits negative, ugly, abusive behavior that is damaging to the team in any way. Dancers are to behave in a respectable manner to all students, teachers, parents, principals, coaches and others. Disorderly conduct will result in consultation with the coach and could lead to suspension and/or dismissal from the team. Grades will be checked for every dancer weekly. Each dancer is expected to maintain a 70% or higher in every class at all times. If the dancer falls below a 70% then they must attend a designated team study hall session after school as well as sitting out of a performance until your grade is passing.

PARENTAL RELATIONS Parents and family are a VERY important part of our program! A great rapport between parents and dancers is critical to ensure the success of our program. There will be many volunteer opportunities for our parents. Parents are requested to be at as many fundraisers as possible throughout the year. Parents are also requested to attend informational meetings to help organize fundraising and various events. Please respect that family and friends are not allowed at practice sessions at school or the studio. If the need should ever arise to discuss anything with the coach, please schedule an appointment to do so. The lines of communication are always open. ***Any event, situation, incident, or problem that may arise that is not specifically stated in these guidelines, will be acted upon at the discretion of the coach and school administration.
