1. Before Installing Cellos 1.1

If You Are Configuring Cellos Yourself, Verify Setup Before Installing Them. Let them sit for a day in area with good signal strength and make sure they report in okay.

1.2

Decide Strategy For Verifying Proper Installation. Due to the potential for wireless transmission and register input problems, properly configured Cellos may fail to report in or report in with only zero values. There are two strategies for handling the initial installation: A. For relatively inaccessible sites: Thoroughly check each unit as you install it. At the site you will: 1. Check wireless signal strength (Section 2). 2. Attach Cello (Section 3). 3. Check Register Inputs; Zero Pressure if logging pressure (Section 4). B. For relatively accessible sites: If you wish, you can install the Cellos then return later to troubleshoot just those sites that do not report data properly. if recording pressure, you must zero pressure beforehand at the office (see Section 4.4). At the site you will: 1. Roughly check signal strength with cell phone (Section 3.1) 2. Attach Cello (Sections 3.2–3.4) 3. Return later if necessary to troubleshoot problem sites (Section 5).

Items Needed At Site: A. If thoroughly checking an installation or if troubleshooting, you will need: 1. Cello, input cable, mounting bracket, screws (plus drill, etc.). 2. Programs installed on your laptop: (a) WinGPS.exe and (b) Cello Wizard. Confirm you have instructions. 3. Cello Comms (RS232) cable. Confirm that it works with your laptop. 4. If logging from encoder registers, bring extra registers if you can (in case one needs replacing). B. If minimally checking initial installation, you will need: • Cello, input cable, mounting bracket, screws (plus drill, etc.). • Cell phone.

2. Checking Wireless Signal Strength (for minimal test of signal strength, see page 3) This is Step One if you are thoroughly checking each unit as you install it. Also follow this procedure if you are getting “+CMS ERROR: 512”, “+CMS ERROR: 513”, or “Modem failed to register” errors in the Error Log. 2.1

If WinGPS and the Cello Wizard are not installed on your computer, install them: Both program should be on the CD supplied with the first Cellos you purchased; they can also be downloaded from our website’s Library. WinGPS is the newest and most versatile of the two program and should be used unless you wish to test the signal strength remotely, which only the Cello Wizard can do (see below).

2.2

Connect Cello to laptop with comms (RS232) cable and open WinGPS. Do NOT press the “Communicate” button. If you are already in WinGPS and communicating with the Cello, click the green connection banner at the bottom of the window to disconnect.

2.3

In the menubar, go to: Tools→Terminal.

2.4

Right-click anywhere on the screen and select “Wake GSM Modem” (or press Shift-F1).

2.5

See if Cello registers on network. It should connect in
