Celebrating 25 years in 2012!

NOTES FROM THE GFPS ADMINISTRATION

A SPA TRADITION

SPA is celebrating 25 years of providing wonderful opportunities for our elementary, middle and high school students and outstanding performances for our community. It is rewarding to know we have now created new “world class” facilities to compliment a “world class” program. Here’s to the next 25 years! Mr. Jody Thompson, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning

Locutus Lo

Ryan Schuster

Following tonight's curtain call, there will be a final musical number. The rest of the students in the Summer Performing Arts Company will join the cast to perform "I Sing the Body Electric." This song has closed all SPA performances for the past 24 years. This symbolic song ties the entire program together. It has different meanings to different students, but a common theme can be found in the literal text. The students are celebrating not only the arts, but their growth in the arts yet to come. They will go on to create their own tomorrows as they continue in music and theatre. The song also symbolizes the passing of a class. This is the last summer program in which the class of 2013 will be able to participate. This "passing of the tradition" is represented by the two soloists selected to sing. Ryan Schuster, a senior, will sing the first verse and then turn the spotlight over to ninth-grader Locutus Lo, a student new to High School SPA. "And in time we will all be stars." NOTES FROM THE SPA ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR (At the 20th year milestone for SPA, the following “Recipe” was listed in the program. I wanted to offer it again on this 25th year SPA milestone.) Recipe: How to Make a Star: (2007) Ingredients: • Start with one student, grade K-12, filled with imagination, an ability to work with others, and a desire to express themselves. • Mix in a talented and dedicated staff willing to give up summers with their own families to work with the students. • Add a sprinkle of administrative support to make sure the resources that are needed are made available. • Place in a community that has plenty of individuals and businesses that are willing to support with their dollars and time. Baking Instructions: • Put entire contents in a number of spaces throughout the community. Dress the space with lights and sound. Bake from 2 to 8 weeks. Remove. Serving Suggestions: • Serve with enthusiastic audiences at over 20 performances (30 in 2012) in June and July.

SPA Mainstage Productions: 1988

*** This summer, as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of SPA, one can't help but marvel at the quality and excellence evident within this remarkable program. The SPA program delivers on the promise of the mission statement of our school district; "Grand Forks Public Schools will provide an environment of educational excellence that engages all learners to develop their maximum potential for community and global success." Through SPA, students are discovering and developing their talents and thereby maximizing their potential. As superintendent, I could not be more proud of a district program than I am of SPA. My commendation to all SPA students, staff, parents, and supporters! Dr. Larry P. Nybladh, Superintendent of Schools

This “recipe” is a favorite for over 1000 (now almost 1200) students in the Grand Cities area each year. And it is an amazing combination, indeed. However, the real “magic” of the summer really happens in the years to come. The students you see tonight will carry their experiences from this summer into their lives to come. Self-confidence, self-esteem, and a positive attitude will follow them no matter what they pursue in the years ahead. Look at their smiles. Look at the sparkle in their eyes. Do you see it? Do you see the stage full of stars? What a fantastic sight! Thank you for supporting and for sharing in this special evening! SPA is a place for ALL students to experience the power and excitement of the performing arts. And in time we will all be stars! (So again tonight, enjoy the magical moments, the enthusiasm, and the celebration of every student.) Dean Opp, Administrative Director

Children of Eden was originally written in 1986 under the title Family Tree for a production by a religiously based high school theater camp. Stephen Schwartz adapted the script and music into a full length musical, giving it the title it uses today. The show opened in London’s West End in 1991. It closed quickly. This is thought to be due to the damper put on tourism by the Gulf War. Although the musical has never played on Broadway, the show’s publisher, Music Theater International reports that Children of Eden is one of its top 20 most frequently licensed properties. Children of Eden is based off of the first 9 chapters of the book of Genesis. Act one includes the story of the creation, Adam and Eve, and Cain and Abel. Act two is the story of Noah and the ark. The script requires that the same actors portray the families in both acts. This adds to the power of the piece, as you will see family dynamics over the generations that do not change.. Children of Eden is a love story. It is the story of the strongest and most perfect love known to the human race. It is about the unconditional love of a parent for a child. It is the love that the creator feels for the creation.

“Arts education aids students in skills needed in the workplace: flexibility, the ability to solve problems and communicate, the ability to learn new skills, to be creative and innovative, and to strive for excellence.” – Joseph M. Calahan, Director of Corporate Communications, Xerox Corporation

An adult who has loved a child will not make it through this without heartache. An adult who has loved a child will feel the pain that Father feels when Eve is disobedient. A father knows what a child does not. A father knows the consequence of the action. When a child makes a choice that we know is going to hurt, what can we do? And how does it feel to recognize yourself in that erring child? “Only in Eden grows a rose without a thorn, and your children start to leave you on the day that they are born. They leave you there to cheer for them, they leave you there to mourn ever so.. Like an ark on uncharted seas, their lives will be lost, And the deeper is your love for them the crueler is the cost And just when they start to find themselves is when you fear they’re lost" If you are a person who believes in a heavenly Father, watching God’s heart break when His children choose poorly and watching him respond may bless you as well. I experienced Children of Eden for the first time last Fall at Moorhead High School. I went away feeling like I had been given a gift. This beautiful show touches the heart on so many levels. It is spiritual, human and gut wrenching. It is beautiful, sweet and uplifting. It is the perfect choice for our 25th Season. Children of Eden is our gift to you. Thank you for 25 years of support. May this beautiful show touch your heart and stay with you always “Our hands can choose to drop the knife. Our hearts can choose to stop the hating For every moment of our life is the beginning. Now we begin.” Connie Sherwood, Director
