LSU duo join hall together BY DAVE SKRETTA AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — By now, the story of how longtime LSU coach Dale Brown discovered Shaquille O’Neal has been told many times: Brown happened upon a massive 13-year-old at an army base in Germany, stayed in touch with him and eventually became like a second father. What is often forgotten is just how far fate stretched for it to happen. It wasn’t O’Neal a large army base — Wildflecken was so remote that the nearest large city in what was then West Germany was several hours away. There was one gym, one commissary. Soldiers despised the high altitude and lousy weather. “For him to show up,” O’Neal said, “that meant everything to me.” Brown would ultimately give O’Neal the confidence he Brown needed to attend college, something he had never dreamed possible, and make it into the NBA, back then not even a dream. So it made sense — maybe fate intervened again — that O’Neal and Brown would be inducted together into the College Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday night in Kansas City. They were joined by six other luminaries, including former Duke star Grant Hill, Louisville standout Darrell Griffith, longtime Maryland coach Gary Williams, Stetson’s Glenn Wilkes Sr., Five-Star Basketball Camp founder Howard Garfinkel and the late Prairie View A&M star Zelmo Beaty. “I’m most excited to be here next to the guy who gave me the opportunity,” O’Neal said, “because at 13, 6-foot-9, I had zero confidence. I wasn’t even thinking about going to college, going Please see HALL | 3B

PHILADELPHIA — Zach Mettenberger kept getting smacked to the turf, battered after the pass or just plain sacked, his protection almost as invisible as a Tennessee lead. He had plenty of time on the ground to reflect on a season gone wrong for the Titans. “It’s not looking real good for us for the playoffs,” he said. “It’s about pride. The work is there. The extra time put in is there. We just can’t seem to get everything going at once.” The Titans ran into trouble from the opening kickoff and never recovered in a 43-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Josh Huff returned the opening kickoff 107 yards and the Titans (2-9) were well on their way toward another defeat in a season to forget. “That’s not the way you want to

LEXINGTON — Devin Booker scored a career-best 18 points, Aaron Harrison added 14 and No. 1 Kentucky held Montana State scoreless for several stretches Sunday night to race to an 86-28 victory. A game in which the Wildcats (5-0) finished just 29 of 67 from the field (43 percent) was offset by a defensive effort that forced the overmatched Bobcats (0-4) into 21 turnovers and held them to 20 percent shooting. Opportunities were hard all night for Montana State, which went scoreless for nearly five minutes in the first half and scored its first second-half points with 9:36 remaining to make it 65-13. Joey Frenchwood’s seven points led the Bobcats. Booker’s second straight double-digit game helped Kentucky regroup from an 0 for 10 shooting start as the 6-foot-6 freshman guard scored 12 first-half points including a pair of 3-pointers. Racers see defense as key against Xavier BY JAMES D. HORNE [email protected]

Murray State is hoping it can play the same suffocating defense it did at the beginning of its game with Brescia when it faces Xavier University in the Cintas Center in Cincinnati tonight. Murray State (2-1) forced eight turnovers in building a 24-2 lead in its 89-56 home victory over NAIA-program Brescia on Thursday and understands doing the same against the Big East’s Xavier would certainly help its chances against the Musketeers. “We know we can score, so coach has been really getting on us about defense,” Racers guard Justin Seymour said after the win over Brescia. “We had the eight turnovers in a row, and I know he was happy about that. But we also need to do that against Xavier.”

MSU forward Jonathan Fairell agreed. “Coach told us our Xavier game started with Brescia,” Fairell said. “He doesn’t care who we play, whether it’s Brescia, Duke, anybody, we started playing against

Brescia like we want to play against Xavier.” The Racers know from the onset that Xavier (3-0), coming off an 81-63 win over Stephen F. Austin on Friday, will be tough to tangle with because of the program’s similarities. “It’s a tremendous program,” Murray State coach Steve Prohm said. “It’s going to be a great atmosphere, and they have a terrific coach in Chris Mack. They are similar to us in that they've had a lot of great, great coaches that have stayed there and won or moved on to bigger schools like Thad Matta to Ohio State or Sean Miller to Arizona. Chris Mack is really the next one, and he’s done a phenomenal job there.” The Musketeers are a highscoring team, averaging 90.3 points a game with five scorers

start the game off,” Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt said. Not at all. And the next 59 minutes weren’t much better. The Eagles sacked Mettenberger five times, including 21⁄2 by Connor Barwin and two for Trent Cole. Mettenberger had 345 yards passing and two TDs and Delanie Walker had 155 yards receiving for the Titans. The Titans didn’t allow any sacks in last week’s loss against the Steelers. Without much pass protection, the Titans could never sustain a serious rally against an Eagles defense that swarmed Mettenberger. They got within six in the second quarter, then watched the Eagles (8-3) pull away and put a a 53-20 loss at Green Bay behind them. “This is a pressure team. averaging in double figures led by 6-foot-6 freshman forward Trevon Bluiett (18.0 ppg, 5.3 rpg) and 6-10 senior center Matt Stainbrook (16.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg). Myles Davis, a 6-2 sophomore guard, is averaging 11.7 points a game, 6-5 freshman guard J.P. Macura is averaging 10.3 points and 6-4 junior guard Remy Abell rounds out with 10.0 points a game. Murray State is 0-3 all-time against Xavier, but those meetings were back in 1953-55 with the Musketeers winning 69-49 in Louisville on Dec. 28, 1953; 7064 in Murray on Feb. 1, 1954, and 74-68 on Jan. 19, 1955, in Cincinnati. San Diego foils Rams’ upset bid BY BERNIE WILSON AP Sports Writer

St. Louis Rams tight end Jared Cook (89) stumbles as he is tackled by San Diego Chargers free safety Eric Weddle on Sunday in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO — The St. Louis Rams were 4 yards away from another upset. Journeyman quarterback Shaun Hill dropped back to pass and Kenny Britt flashed across the middle. Strong safety Marcus Gilchrist swooped in and it was game over. Gilchrist’s interception with 56 seconds left preserved the Chargers’ 27-24 victory against the Rams that helped tighten the AFC West race. “I feel very bad for our football team considering the way they played,” coach Jeff Fisher said. “We had an opportunity to win at the end of the game, and you can’t take that away. That was a tough one. There’s no blame to be placed on anyone.” Gilchrist jumped the route as Hill tried to force a pass to Britt, who also was covered by Shareece Wright, on second-andgoal from the 4. LPGA’s Ko gets record haul BY DOUG FERGUSON

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Tony Romo threw two touchdown passes to Dez Bryant, the winner from 13 yards with 1:01 remaining, lifting the Dallas Cowboys to a comeback 31-28 victory over the New York Giants. Romo threw for two TDs in the third quarter. But the Giants (3-8), trailing 24-21, staged a 93-yard drive capped by Adrien Robinson’s first career TD catch, from 1 yard with 3 minutes left. Back came Dallas (8-3) on an 80-yard march in which Romo never was pressured. He found Bryant in the back of the end zone to win it, setting up an NFC East showdown with Philadelphia on Thanksgiving. — Associated Press

Pacquiao dominates; wants Mayweather MACAU — Manny Pacquiao couldn’t resist having a little fun after getting the signature win he desperately needed for the fight boxing fans desperately want to see. No reason not to enjoy himself after sending Chris Algieri to the canvas six times Sunday night in a performance that will once again heat up talk of a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. “He’s going to fight me? Yes! Yes!” Pacquiao said, jumping up and down in the ring Sunday after tearing apart a reluctant Algieri on his way to a lopsided decision win. “I am ready to fight him next year.” Pacquiao got the big knockdowns he was looking for, battering Algieri around the ring at will Sunday in a lopsided welterweight title fight. Pacquiao chased Algieri from the opening bell, knocking him down repeatedly and dominating. About the only thing Pacquiao didn’t get was his first knockout in five years, settling instead for a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision against an opponent who seemed unwilling to engage. — Associated Press

Federer’s Switzerland wins Davis Cup final LILLE, France — Roger Federer defeated Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in the first reverse singles match Sunday as Switzerland won the Davis Cup final against France by taking an unassailable 3-1 lead. The 17-time Grand Slam champion gave Switzerland its first title in the team competition and added the only big trophy in tennis missing from his collection. The 33-year-old Federer and Stan Wawrinka had put Switzerland into a 2-1 lead Saturday with a straight sets defeat of Gasquet and Julien Benneteau in the doubles. Federer was thrashed by Gael Monfils in his first singles match after struggling with a bad back but recovered as the weekend progressed and did not face a break point on Sunday.

NAPLES, Fla. — New Zealand teenager Lydia Ko was an instant millionaire even before she went into a three-way playoff Sunday in the CME Group Tour Championship. She finished off her rookie season in style. Another victory. Another record. And the richest single-day payoff in the history of women’s golf. Ko was flawless with a 4-under 68 that allowed her to capture the inaugural “Race to CME Globe” and its $1 million bonus. Then, the 17-year-old added an extra $500,000 to her big day when she won the Tour Championship with a par on the fourth playoff hole. And to think just one year ago she made $16,063 in her pro debut at Tiburon Golf Club. Her clothes drenched with champagne, she sat next to a pair of crystal trophies, with a glass case at her feet stuffed with cash to symbolize the $1 million bonus. Ko had posed with the cash case at the start of the week. She never thought about the money until it was hers. “When I saw that $1 million in the box I was like, ‘Wow, I wonder who the winner of that will be?’” she

Ko now has five wins before she can legally drink that champagne that was sprayed on her at the 18th green after she defeated Carlota Ciganda of Spain and Julieta Granada of Paraguay. She won three times this year, and her earnings

Matsuyama wins Dunlop Phoenix in playoff MIYAZAKI, Japan — Hideki Matsuyama of Japan beat compatriot Hiroshi Iwata in the first playoff hole to win the Dunlop Phoenix on Sunday. Matsuyama, who plays primarily on the U.S. PGA tour, started the day with a two-stroke lead and shot a 1-under 70 in regulation before saving par on the extra hole to claim his first victory this season on the Japanese tour. Iwata began the day seven strokes off the lead and surged up the leaderboard with a 63 to tie Matsuyama at 15-under 269. Walker’s return after a one-game absence from a concussion suffered against Baltimore was the lone highlight for the Titans. “It was a good day, just to have a concussion and come back to do what I did,” he said. “But I’m not really happy about it.” After the first of four straight three-and-outs to start the game by the Titans, the Eagles went up

14-0 on a 4-yard TD run by Darren Sproles. LeSean McCoy had a 2-yard TD run in the second quarter. Mark Sanchez, who threw for 307 yards and one touchdown in his third start for the injured Nick Foles, fired a 14-yard TD pass to James Casey in the third quarter. The Titans didn’t get a first down until Mettenberger threw a 40-yard TD pass to Justin Hunter on their fifth offensive series. Brandon Ghee intercepted Sanchez at the Eagles 30 to set up the score that cut it to 17-7. Mettenberger tossed a 68-yard pass to Walker to start the next drive to set up Shonn Greene’s 2-yard TD run, cutting the deficit to 20-14.

Cody Parkey kicked field goals of 36, 26, 35, 40 and 50 yards but his 49-yard attempt hit the post at the end of the first half to snap his successful streak at 17. Walker said the first four series doomed the Titans. “It was a big killer,” he said. “Their crowd was into it, they were jumping around very excited. When you get that type of momentum at your home field, it can go a long way, which it today.” The Eagles beat the Titans for the first time. They were 0-4 against them after their move from Houston to Tennessee. “We just weren’t able to protect the ball like we wanted to,” Mettenberger said. “We needed more points, more first downs.”

St. Louis got the ball back at the Chargers 40 after a long punt return by Tavon Austin and a 27-yard pass from Hill to Britt gave the Rams the ball at the 6. Benny Cunningham gained 2 yards before Hill was intercepted. “They had good coverage on my primary, and Kenny just kind of flashed and I pulled,” Hill said. “It was just a reaction. “The coaches put the ball in my hands with a chance to win the game, and I appreciate that,” Hill said. “I let them down. There’s no way you can sit there and second-guess the play calling. If you’re going to second-guess anything, second-guess the guy who didn’t execute the play, and that’s me.” The Rams (4-7) were trying for consecutive wins for the first time this season, having upset Denver a week earlier. “Until we put a couple of wins in a row together, it’s going to be hard for us,” Fisher said. “We are not going to change anything.” Ryan Mathews had a 32yard touchdown run and linebacker Andrew Gachkar scored on a 13-yard fumble recovery 21 seconds later for the Chargers (7-4). Philip Rivers shook off a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown by Janoris Jenkins and threw a 29yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to Keenan Allen, who earlier had two turnovers.

to the NBA. And Coach Brown sent me letters every week, ‘How are you doing?’ “One letter was my favorite letter,” O’Neal recalled. “‘Even if you never become a basketball player, I want to offer you a scholarship to LSU.’” O’Neal went on to win two national player of the year awards, average 22 points and 14 rebounds and set school records for blocks in a game, season and career. While he never made it to the Final Four — one of his biggest regrets — he still accomplished plenty in just three years. Drafted first overall by Orlando in 1992, O’Neal would embark on an NBA career that would include four championships, 15 AllStar appearances and a league MVP award. He would score more than 25,000 points and tally more than 19,000 rebounds over 19 seasons. This year’s class joins dozens of other players, coaches and contributors who have been enshrined in Kansas City since the inaugural 2006 class, headlined by John Wooden and Oscar Robertson. The annual induction takes place on the eve of the CBE Classic at the nearby Sprint Center.

‘Mockingjay, Part 1’ opens with $123 million BY JAKE COYLE AP Film Writer

NEW YORK — “Mockingjay, Part 1” didn’t catch fire like the previous installments of “The Hunger Games,” but it still had the biggest opening of the year with $123 million at the weekend box office, according to studio estimates Sunday. Lionsgate’s “Mockingjay” opened well below the $158 million debut of last year’s “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and the $153 million opening of the 2012 original. But even with a $30-million-plus slide in the franchise, “Mockingjay” far surpassed the previous top weekend of the year: the $100 million debut of “Transformers: Age of Extinction.” The result made for some Associated Press unusual ironies. The bigJennifer Lawrence portrays Katniss Everdeen in a scene from “The Hunger Games: gest opening of the year Mockingjay Part 1.”

(and by a wide margin) was seen by some as a disappointment. After initial box office receipts of “Mockingjay” rolled in Friday suggested a weekend take below expectations, Lions Gate Entertainment’s stock dipped 5 percent. But the decision to split the final book in Suzanne Collins’ dystopian trilogy into two films was clearly lucrative for Lionsgate. “Mockingjay” did even better overseas, where it made $152 million over the weekend, accounting altogether for a $275 million global opening. “It’s the biggest opening of the year, so it really illustrates the strength of the franchise,” said David Spitz, head of distribution for Lionsgate, noting the North American opening was the 15th best ever. Spitz declined to an-

swer questions about Wall Street’s reaction to the opening, or what the effect may have been of splitting the third book in two. “It speaks for itself,” Spitz said of the result. Dividing the book pushed much of the big drama of “Mockingjay” to the second film, scheduled for release in November 2015. On the same November weekend in 2010, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” — which similarly split the series’ last book into two — opened almost identically with $125 million. A year later, the second “Deathly Hallows” film debuted bigger than all previous “Harry Potter” films with $169 million. “I’m not worried about this franchise,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box office tracker Rentrak.

Babysitting damages are one-sided ‘Mad Men’ creator to receive Dear Annie: My sisterin-law and I exchange babysitting for our young children. I have three under the age of 5, and she has two. It is mutually beneficial except for one thing: If the kids break something at her house, she demands that I pay for it. Recently this included getting her couch professionally cleaned after all of the children, not just mine, drew on it with pens. I was fine with footing the bill, until something at my house was damaged, and her response was to laugh it off and say, “Well, you should have been watching them!” I do not appreciate the double standard. Is there some kind of rule as to who should pay for the damage? — Stuck with the Bill No Matter What in Oregon Dear Stuck: If one child is unusually destructive or breaks something particularly valuable, the parents should make an effort to reimburse for damages. However, if all of the children play in roughly the same way, it’s simply the cost of doing business. Discuss this with your sister-in-law and agree that you either split the costs or no one pays. If necessary, put it in writing. Dear Annie: I have a severe allergy to cats. I went through a five-year course of allergy shots and take an antihistamine every day, but I can still have a reaction when visiting the home of a friend with a cat. Many people don’t truly understand how severe the problem is. I would like to

Ask Annie make a few suggestions: 1. Please don’t be offended if I ask you about your cats, am hesitant to visit your home or need to leave early. This isn’t personal. It is a medical issue. 2. Many people vacuum just before an allergic friend arrives. This actually makes the problem worse because it sprays allergens into the air that hang suspended for hours. Instead, vacuum hours earlier, and then open all of the windows to air out the house. Consider purchasing a HEPA-filtered vacuum. And please realize that the more people present the more the allergens are stirred up. I am unlikely to want to attend a large party in your home. Again, it’s not personal. 3. Please provide a surface to sit on that has not been previously occupied by the cat. Consider having the visit in an uncarpeted area. And keep the cat confined the whole time. I know your cat is adorable, but I can’t have it rub against me. 4. I appreciate your invitations to reciprocate, but I am very uncomfortable in your home. Instead, you can “host” by bringing dinner to me. 5. If you have an allergic friend or relative and you do not currently have a cat, consider adopting something else. If you get a cat, expect visits to your house to diminish. And consider the message you

are sending to that friend or relative. I hope this helps people understand that we cat-allergic people are just trying to maintain friendships the best we can. It would be a lovely gesture if our friends could accommodate this one part of who we are that is so inconvenient. — Trying My Best Dear Trying: We know some folks will decide you are too much trouble to accommodate. But for those who value these relationships, this will help them understand how difficult and dangerous it is for you to be exposed to cats. We like the idea of friends bringing dinner to your place (or maybe inviting you to join them at a restaurant) to reciprocate. We hope they will. Dear Annie: The letter from “Unforgiven,” who inadvertently left her brother’s stepson out of her father’s obituary, touched my heart. May I suggest that she offer to publish an anniversary notice in the newspaper, in which the stepson is not only mentioned, but invited to participate in writing? If that doesn’t soothe the sister-in-law, there’s more to the issue. — Sheila in Massachusetts Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. honorary International Emmy BY CHARLES J. GANS Associated Press

NEW YORK — “Mad Men” stars Christina Hendricks and John Slattery will be presenting a special award at the International Emmys Gala to the show’s creator and executive producer Matthew Weiner who’s preparing the final episodes of the 1960s Madison Avenue ad agency saga that are slated to air in spring 2015. Weiner will be receiving the honorary International Emmy Founders

Award at Monday night’s ceremony at the Hilton New York. “‘Mad Men’ has really come to define television for a whole generation of viewers,” said Bruce L. Paisner, president and CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “It’s an amazing global cultural phenomenon ... a force of nature as much as just a television series.” “Although these are stories in theory out of the ’60s, part of the success of the show is that it’s a

touchstone for how we think about ourselves and our own relationships even today.”

Horoscopes MONDAY, NOV. 24, 2014 ARIES (March 21-April 19): A change in your legal, medical or financial status will be beneficial if you remain calm and focus on getting things done. The less time you spend pontificating, and the more time you spend taking action, the better. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Interesting information will develop through a conversation you have or a lecture you attend. A little knowledge can go a long way, so dig deep and discover all you can before incorporating your findings into your daily routine. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Sharing will help you keep your relationships on track. Offering

unique suggestions and taking part in events or activities that you feel you have something to contribute to will encourage you to get more involved. Love is in the stars. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Put greater emphasis on partnerships. Express your concerns and plans for the future, and you will weed out the people who have no interest in helping you reach your goals. Be careful not to fall for someone’s insincere gestures. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Set aside some time to do things that will help improve your outlook, appearance or overall wellness. Avoid anyone who brings you down or puts unrealistic

demands on you. Consider alternatives and make a move. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Pick up the pace. You don’t have to make drastic changes, but you can put practical plans into motion. Be a little creative, but don’t feel the need to please someone who is using emotional tactics to make you feel guilty. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Travel to unfamiliar destinations that can offer you inspiration and get you away from any problems brewing at home. You need time to think about the changes you should make to keep personal conflicts to a minimum. Love is on the rise. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21):

Take a moment to reorganize your personal space to better fit your needs. Use your insight and strong sense of practicality to come up with a plan that is cost-efficient and will help you be more productive. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Keep the facts straight to help avoid someone messing with you mentally or emotionally. Get involved in a new venture that will add to your knowledge or skill set. Try to improve the way you live and be open to change. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Productivity will be the name of the game. What you put in, you will get out. Now is not the time to scrimp with your

time or your attributes. Offer what you can, but make sure you get something in return. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Don’t back down when under pressure. Taking action will help you avoid someone trying to manipulate the way you do things. Making a change is a good idea if your motives are good and your plan is well researched. Love is highlighted. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You’ve got options, so don’t feel the need to follow the crowd. Someone will mislead you if you are too much of a chameleon. Be creative and let your intuition help you make the best choice. Don’t let a poor relationship cost you.
