VITAMINS FOR THE SPIRIT. This weekend’s Gospel is the beginning of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, which is found in Matthew’s Gospel. The form of the Beatitudes found here is not unique to Jesus. We quickly note in this reading that the people whom Jesus calls “blessed and happy” are not people we think of as blessed or happy, the poor in spirit, the meek, the persecuted, etc. This Gospel is one of reversals. Jesus’ blueprint for happiness reflects little of what the world might call happiness. The Beatitudes can be understood as a framework for Christian living. Our vocation as Christians is not to be first in this world, but rather to be first in the eyes of God. VITAMINAS PARA EL ESPÍRITU. THE GOSPEL presents the New Law of God's kingdom, the Beatitudes, at the beginning of the tla1 discourse of Jesus in Matthew's gospel, where he enumerates the citizens of the Kingdom; later, at the end of the last eschatological discourse (Mt 25:31-46), in the last judgment, we are told who else enter the Kingdom: the poor and those who took sides with the poor by helping them. The first and the last Beatitude end with the same words: "For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." (Matthew, a good Jew, avoids using the name of "God" and speaks of the Kingdom of "Heaven"). This phrase, repeated at the beginning and at the end of the Beatitudes, shows that Matthew is making a "literary inclusion," (a kind of literary "sandwich" in which the substance or the beef is in the middle) so that the types of persons mentioned at the interior of the inclusion (the meek, hungry, peacemakers ... ) are the ones who belong in God's Kingdom, since they are the citizens of the Kingdom. The Beatitudes express God's option for the poor in the New Testament. In line with Jewish thought, as I indicated last week, more than of the Kingdom of God, we have to think of God's active reign exercising his sovereignty over those who listen and obey him. The poor, the meek, the clean of heart, ... are the anawim, the Poor of Yahweh of the Old Testament, of whom the first reading from Zephaniah speaks; those who place their hope in God alone because they know there is no justice nor hope In human society. "Poor in spirit" in the translation of the Nueva Biblia Espanola are "those who are poor by choice," those who make an effective option against money and social rank, placing themselves totally in God's hands (cf. Mt 6:19-24; 19:21-24); they are poor "in their spirit, " through a voluntary decision, because they realize that true happiness is not In riches but in God. Poverty of spirit must have a dimension of solidarity and charity towards real and material poverty, towards that poor "brothers and sisters." Each Beatitude is accompanied by an appropriate promise; of the six "inner" Beatitudes, the first three refer to a painful condition of persons, while the last three refer to an activity which is of benefit for others, since to be and to act are intimately linked in biblical thought. The Beatitudes of Jesus are radically opposed to those of the world.

EL EVANGELIO nos presenta la Nueva Ley del Reino de Dios, las Bienaventuranzas. Al comienzo del primer sermón de Jesús en San Mateo donde enumera a los ciudadanos del Reino; luego. al final del ultimo sermón escatológico (Mt 25:31-46). nos dice. en el juicio final, quienes entran además en Reino de los Cielos: los pobres y los que se ponen de parte de los pobres. La primera y la ultima bienaventuranza acaban del mismo modo: "Porque de Elías es el Reina de los Cielos." (Mateo, como buen judío, evita usar el nombre de "Dios" y por eso dice en vez Reina "de los Cielos"). Esa frase, repetida al principio y al final de las Bienaventuranzas, nos indica que San Mateo esta haciendo una "inclusión literaria, (una especie de "sandwich" literario en el que la sustancia o la carne esta en medio) de modo que los tipos de personas que se mencionan al interior de la inclusión (pobres, mansos, hambrientos ... ) son los que pertenecen al Reino de Dios y a quienes les pertenece el Reino, pues son los ciudadanos del Reino. Las bienaventuranzas expresan la opción de Dios par los pobres en el nuevo testamento. Según el pensamiento judío, y como lo indicábamos la semana pasada, mas que en el Reino hay que pensar en el Reinado de Dios que ejerce su soberanía sobre los que Ie escuchan y obedecen. Los pobres, los mansos, los limpios de corazón .... son los Anawim, los Pobres de Yave, del Antiguo Testamento, a los que se refiere la primera lectura del profeta Sofonías, los que ponen toda su Esperanza en Dios porque no encuentran apoyo ni justicia en la sociedad humana. "Pobres de espíritu," en la traducción de la Nueva Biblia Española, son "los que eligen ser pobres," los que hacen una opción electiva contra el dinero y el rango social, poniéndose totalmente en manos de Dios (cf. Mt 6:1924; 19:21-24); son los pobres "en su espíritu," por decisión voluntaria, porque yen que la verdadera felicidad no esta en la riqueza sino en Dios. La pobreza de espíritu tiene que tener una dimensión de solidaridad y caridad hacia la pobreza real y material, hacia los "hermanos U pobres. Cada bienaventuranza va acompañada de una promesa apropiada. De las seis Bienaventuranzas centrales, las tres primeras indican un estado doloroso de la persona. y las tres ultimas una actividad beneficioso para los demás, ya que el ser y el hacer están íntimamente Ligados en el pensamiento bíblico. Las Bienaventuranzas de Jesús son radicalmente opuestas a las bienaventuranzas del mundo.
