Cathedral House Monthly August 2007 Everyone is a Star! During July we learned all about clowns and being silly. This month we will pretend to be other stars from the circus. Maybe we will be balancing on a tightrope, taming the lions, riding a unicycle, or swinging on a trapeze. Our summer long visit to the circus has been so much fun for us all!

Vacation Bible School During the week of July 23rd, excitement could be heard all through Primary and Kindergarten. The reason, Vacation Bible School of course. Each morning met the children with a new journey. They danced, drew pictures, imagined, and touched (and

painted) a real FISH! Thanks so much to Casey Shobe and Lisa Puccio for presenting our children with this fun week!

Hearing and Vision Screening Pinewoods Screening Services will be at Cathedral House on September 19th to screen children for hearing and vision. The state requires this screening on children who have turned four. Parents are welcome to have their child screened by their own pediatrician, and furnish the school with the results or have Pinewoods screen their child on the 19th. Information will be available at the front desk.

Current Records Are A Must The Harris County Health Department and Child Care Licensing have conducted our annual review. It is very important to keep all your child’s information current. If current immunizations are not on file during a review, children may be asked to leave pending arrival of current records. We also ask for contact numbers to be current. Wrong cell phone and work numbers have been called many times when trying to reach a parent.

News from the classrooms: Nursery I: This month our babies continued to learn and explore new things. Although we are small, we too love the circus theme. In class we will focus on all the bright colors, read “I Spy A Circus”, color a circus elephant, and make a lot of silly faces. Stop by and take a look at all of the pictures on our door of our circus fun.

Movement I: Greetings from Movement I...We’ve enjoyed learning about the circus this summer. We learned the sounds of a lion, elephant and monkey just to name a few. Did you see the cute clown faces we made? Everyone does love the circus but we love one thing even more..SPLASH DAY! Our new friends Charlie, Oliver, and Ben think Splash Day is the best, Hazel has overcome her fear, and John is the King of Splash, he would stay in the pool all day if we would let him. Sam and Elizabeth like to play with the boats while Reese prefers trying to climb into the water tables. Barrett and Henry tend to compete for who can make the biggest splash, while Remy relaxes in the bucket of water. Last but not least, Alexis shows off the meaning of cute by looking ever so stylish in her swim suit. In August we welcome Charlotte Hardig from Nursery II and new to Cathedral House, Maya Madraimov and her family.

Movement II: In July we celebrated the 4th of July with red, white, and blue and counting stars. Look at the new puzzles on our shelves. They help us work on shapes and different types of transportation. Our circus continues, we jumped like monkeys and roared like lions as we preformed in ring two. Also in July we said good-bye to Hudson Poole and his family, they have moved to New Orleans. Joining us from Movement I were Julia McMahon, Jordan Cheadle, and Maddie Schneider. New to Cathedral House is Tori Livingstone. Help us welcome her and her family.

Reminder: All items brought to school need to be labeled with your child’s first and last name. (cups, dishes, toys, sheets, clothes, etc.)

News from the classrooms: Primary I:

Greeting from Clown School -

Primary I has been having a blast learning how to make someone laugh by doing tricks and telling jokes. One of our favorites was: *Knock, knock * Who’s there? * Banana * Banana who * (repeat 3x) * Knock, knock * Who’s there? * Orange * Orange who * Orange you glad I didn’t say banana? * We had fun painting with watercolors and decorating our very own clown hats. We worked on numbers with a fun ice cream cone lesson, in which we matched ice cream scoops to the numeral on the cones. Some of us took a short break from Clown School to go on a Bible Voyage with Ms. Lisa and Mr. Casey. They really enjoyed Vacation Bible School. Joining Primary I this month were three new clowns, Aidan Ganchan, Charlie Maddux and Joseph Maddux.

Toddler II: “ What can you do Punchanello, funny fellow, what can you do Punchanello funny you.” That was the chant of July as we went to Clown School. The children practiced balancing, juggling and coordination skills. We played ball games and practiced the art of being funny, at which most of our children already are professionals! Last but not least, we could not be clowns without our brightly colored costumes. Clown hats, happy and sad faces, and ties completed our ensemble. Once all the clowns were dressed, we jumped into the clown car and honked the clown horn. We all had a blast. See you in August.

Kindergarten: Ha! Ha! Ha! July was full of laughter and fun. We had some very funny jokes shared by the children. Ben M. “Why did the cow cross the road?” “It wanted to get to the Moo-sium.”

Primary II: July was full of fireworks and fun! Plenty of fun! We had patriotic artwork to stomp out, and clown school to attend. We loved reading Morris and Boris at the Circus by B. Wiseman. It is about 2 very silly characters who end up being in the greatest show on Earth. July was full of art projects. Painting the big top, decorating clown clothes, and making a clown with our hands are just a few of the things we made. One of the favorite activities was face painting. Adding to the circus fun this month were the stories shared by those children that attended Barnum and Baileys Circus. This added to the fun and silliness of the clowns and amazement of the acts. Next month we look forward to becoming the STARS!

Molly “Why did the chicken cross the playground?” “He wanted to get to the other slide.” Dominic “Why did the excavator go into the closet?” “He thought it was a construction site.” We also had fun playing with shaving cream. We squirted it all over the tables. It would be hard to say who had more fun finger painting in it, the children or the teachers. The “joke” was really on the children, even though it was fun, this is a great way to clean the tables and make the room smell good. Thank you to Ian and his mom for sharing silly hats. They were fun to use as we dressed up as clowns. The next few weeks will be filled with many emotions as our Kindergarteners begin to move on to their new schools. We will miss them all so much!
