MOTORCYCLES 1098
1951 1000cc Vincent Rapide Series C Reg. No. WNO 93 Frame Nos. RC9704/C Engine No. F10AB/1/7804 WNO 93 left the Stevenage factory on the 1st November 1951 to dealers Albons of Barking in Essex. Taking centre stage in the shop it was admired twice a day, whilst riding to and from work on his 500cc Comet by Len Short of Dagenham. Time passed and the Vincent stayed put but the desire to own it did not diminish, then on the 13th June 1953, a £50 discount was offered and the hard saved deposit for a house together with the Comet changed hands, the Vincent was hidden in the outhouse as the wrath of the mother in law, in whose house Len was living, was much feared. June 1960 saw a failure in eyesight and so the Vincent had to go but, rather than sell, the Vincent was driven up to Nottingham and handed over to his lifelong friend and Army pal who, most honourably, passed on £50 to the now ex owner. The next 2 years saw WNO 93 in regular use with a sidecar until a “£10 passage” new start in Australia took the young family away. Instructions were left with Dad to sell the Vincent and to take £45 if it could be got…no takers! 1966 saw the family back in Blighty, Dad handed the Vincent back and it went into the garage where it was in hibernation until the late 1970’s at which point the children started to show an interest. This inspired a refurbishment and the wheels, engine parts and forks were handed over to Maughan & Sons for some TLC, the parts came back and were ready for assembly. It was at this time that a family bereavement put all thoughts of riding motorcycles out of everybodies heads and WNO 93 once again was left to slumber. November 2006 saw a change of heart and the desire to get the Vincent up & running, an element of recapturing the past perhaps. Due to the long lay up it was thought sensible to revisit the rebuild and many specialist suppliers were consulted . The wheels had been rebuilt on Akront rims with a 400 x 18 rear and 350 x 19 front, (the original rims are present), stainless steel spokes were used and all nuts and bolts were replaced in the same material, the frame was touched up where required but the tank is believed to bear the original paintwork and transfers. The end of 2007 saw the Vincent in fine fettle and ready for the open road, just 11.5 miles later the realisation dawned that whilst the Vincent was still the mighty beast it ever was the owner was perhaps not. As a consequence WNO 93, with just over 24,000 original miles, is to be offered on the open market for the first time since 1953. The history file contains all bills and receipts together with a Riders Handbook, VOC spares and instructions lists, original spare parts list, original buff log book, Feb & June 1962 tax discs, V5C, MOT (8.11.08), VOC dating cert’, copies of the original Works Order form, Engine Check sheet, Despatch Check sheet and Road Test report, together with a copy of the original invoice to Len Short. An iconic motorcycle with VOC verified provenance, running sweetly on inspection, a truly rare opportunity! Estimate £22,000 - £25,000

1936 650cc Triumph 6/1 Reg. No. CUV 570 Frame No. V424 Engine No. 1V 6434 In July 1933 a brand new, modern Triumph made its bow in the shape of two prototype machines. This exciting machine, coded 6/1, was to enter limited production for the 1934 season but was only to be listed for two seasons. Not only did it have an advanced specification but it only sold in extremely small numbers, a few hundred only ever being built and today extremely rare. Designed by Val Page, the 647cc vertical twin cylinder engine bore no relationship to the Edward Turner Speed-Twin which debuted in 1937 and was subsequently mass produced in many guises and capacities. The 6/1’s valves are operated by a single gear driven camshaft mounted at the rear of the crankcases. The Mag-Dyno is gear driven from the camshaft with the dry sump lubrication featuring an oil container in the crankcase. A flywheel is carried on the nearside of the 360 degree crankshaft and, outboard of it, is the primary drive which is by double helical gears, an expensive feature and, because of this, the engine has to run backwards! To celebrate the arrival of the 6/1 an example was hitched to a sidecar and, after circling Brooklands for 500 miles at 60mph, was put through the gruelling ISDT winning the coveted Maudes Trophy. The vendor relates that CUV 570 was purchased in 1936 and sold the same year to a brother in law, Mr Alen Oven, who kept the machine until approximately 1998 when the current custodian purchased it. In the approximate 5,000 miles covered in the next 10 years the Brooklands banking and famous Test Hill have again been ridden. The urge to restore has been resisted and the 6/1 is presented in running, original, unmolested order and complete with V5C, SORN and some hoarded spares which include a front hub, rear wheel and seat covers. A unique opportunity to purchase one of the very rarest of all historic British Motorcycles. Estimate £6,500 - £7,500

c1939 350cc Norton 40M Manx Grand Prix Reg. No. N/A Frame No. None evident Engine No. 9379 During the 1930’s Norton continued to enhance its reputation as a manufacturer of superb racing motorcycles. Nortons of the 1930’s were further refined with the Carroll overhead camshaft engine and the Birmingham marque became increasingly famous for its racing exploits thanks to the efforts of team manager Joe Craig and riders such as Stanley Woods, Jimmie Guthrie, Harold Daniel and Freddie Frith. This machine represents the peak of Norton development for the private owner prior to the Second World War and has been in the vendor’s ownership for the last 25 years starting out as little more than a basket case. It has, over the last 4 years, been fully restored both mechanically and cosmetically by the leading pre-war, overhead camshaft Norton specialist and racer, Stu Rogers. The 1938 engine has been updated to 1939 specification including large fin cylinder head and barrel assemblies, correct Amal RN TT racing carburettor, BTH KD1 racing magneto, 3 plate clutch and complete engine rebuild regardless of cost. Similarly worked upon are the pie crust fuel tank, Dunlop saddles, girder front forks with Andre damper unit, plunger rear suspension, conical front hub, chrome plated exhaust header pipe and megaphone system. A full inventory of bills and receipts for the work carried out by Stu (totalling in excess of £12,000) will be supplied to the successful purchaser. The Norton is to all intents and purposes a brand new period racer that is ready for both show and go! Estimate £20,000 - £22,000
The following lots (1101 – 1105) are consigned from the deceased estate of Sidney Charles King. ‘Sid’ King was much respected in restoration circles having restored the famous “Copperknob” Brooklands racer amongst many others. During 1949 and 1950 Sid worked for Victor Martin, motorcycle dealer and producer of JAP engined machines, this is reflected in his passion for all things J.A. Prestwich and represented her by this collection of fine motorcycles. Cheffins will be offering a large consignment of JAP engines and related spares in forthcoming sales from this same deceased estate. 1101
c1928 500cc Douglas DT5 Dirt Track Reg. No. N/A Frame No. TF226K Engine No. EL1184 Dirt Track racing was first developed in Australia in the 1920’s, the first race in England was held at Camberley in Surrey on May 7th 1927 and Fay Taylour won the unlimited class, women were banned from the sport in 1930! The machines were not fitted with brakes or a gearbox just a single speed countershaft and clutch and the Australians favoured the Douglas racing machines such as the RA and TT models which had a suitably low centre of gravity. Douglas very quickly homed in on the new fad and developed the DT model in 500 and 600cc forms. Douglas subsequently ruled the roost for the next 3 years but more compact Rudge and JAP engined machines began to come to the fore and by 1928 most of the major manufacturers were producing “Dirt Track” models. The Douglas on offer has clearly seen some use in the past. It is related that the Douglas originally belonged to Sid some 30 or 40 years ago and was recently bought back by him, whilst some inconsistencies are evident such as the plated rear wheel rim and the recovered saddle this is nonetheless a rare opportunity to aquire an example of an all conquering British race machine. No documentation available. Estimate £4,000 - £5,000

500cc Douglas DT5 Dirt Track (Dismantled) The lot in question was apparently nearing the final stages of restoration prior to Sids death. The frame and forks are present in repainted form as is the tank, two engines are included, EL703 (dismantled) and EL1162 (apparently complete). Wheels and tyres, seat, carburettors, sprockets, bars, exhaust, copious freshly plated parts are all present but potential purchasers must satisfy themselves as to the extent of the parts present before bidding. No documentation available. Estimate £1,500 - £2,500
c1930 500cc Rudge Whitworth Dirt Track Reg. No. N/A Frame No. None evident Engine No.4314 This machine is a twin port, four valve engined beast designed with the sole purpose of use on the anti clockwise oval. The nearside exhaust is raised at a jaunty angle to allow greater ground clearance whilst a twin float bowl Amal carburettor ensures that the Rudge engine has sufficient nourishment at full chat. With damped girder forks the minimalist machine is presented in nice “unfussy” condition and it can be assumed is a most uncommon survivor. No documentation available. Estimate £3,500 - £4,500
c1935 500cc Comerford Special Speedway Reg. No. N/A Frame No. None evident Engine No. JOS/D 38421 In 1930 the George Wallis designed speedway frame and the new JAP speedway engine were marketed by Comerfords the dealers at Thames Ditton, Surrey. Known as the Comerford Wallis, subsequent development by them saw the name change to the Comerford Special. The example on offer is equipped with a four stud JAP overhead valve engine, the sparks supplied by a BTH magneto and the fuel through a twin float bowl Amal carburettor. The super wide bars give this bike a real period feel which is complimented by the unusual fork design, in good clean condition this would grace any serious collection. No documentation available. Estimate £2,000 - £3,000 c1935 500cc Martin JAP Speedway Reg. No. N/A Frame No. None evident Engine No.JOS/I 82405 In 1932 JAP arranged for their engines to be sold by Victor Martin Ltd of Cheshunt, Herts. A former JAP employee who had been involved in the development of the engine, he set up business building complete machines utilising the JAP engine in a frame built along the lines of the Rudge speedway machine. This blue finished machine houses a five stud JAP engine with twin float bowl Amal carburettor and damped girder forks. A clean example of a pre-war, home developed machine. No documentation available. Estimate £1,800 - £2,500

1929 500cc Rudge Whitworth Special Reg. No. AAS 541 Frame No. 34754 Engine No. 55493 Described in the 1929 Rudge catalogue as the “Rudge Whitworth Special”, this 4 valve, 500cc machines known history starts when it was purchased from some ex-racers in the South of England sometime in the 1980’s. The engine at that time clearly showed signs of having been worked on and the new owner decide to embark on a full restoration to original specification. Difficulty was encountered in sourcing the correct parts and some long while passed whilst, with the aid of the Rudge Owners Club, the relevant correct parts were collected and paint work and nickel plating was attended to. The Rudge was then used on the road (sparingly) and taken to local shows where it took several prizes according to a former owner. Having changed hands again the Rudge has continued to take prizes at shows and is stated to run very well indeed with a fair turn of speed. A very handsome Banbury eligible machine that is offered with a September 2009 MOT and V5 documentation. Estimate £6,800 - £7,500
1947 1000cc Ariel 4G Square Four Reg. No. LJO 84 Frame No. XP1497 Engine No. DK651 The history of LJO 84 can be traced back to 1955 when according to the continuation logbook it was in the ownership of Mr Peter Hodds of Norwich and was then subsequently sold to Alfred Scotter in 1971, also of Norwich. The current owner purchased the Ariel direct from Mr Scotter on a Norwich building site c1974 and used it for the next couple of years before a troublesome magneto caused it to be consigned to the garage. The Oxford registered, iron barrelled two piper has remained in various garages ever since, the passing of time has left it very much untouched and original although there is no sign of any paint on the chromed tank, Dad’s decision to spray the chrome with laquer in order to preserve the tank has provided a curiously golden glow after 30 years. Oiled up prior to storage the Ariel has survived with a complete compliment of instruments and would appear to just lack a battery and pillion pad, the wheel rims are finished in black and are held in place on the rigid frame with the original telescopic forks. The owner has had the presence of mind to keep the V5 up to date with the DVLA and the original LJO 84 registration number is still live, now representing a fine restoration project or re-fettle in “as is” condition, the Ariel will be offered with continuation log book, old V5 and current V5C documentation. Estimate £3,000 - £4,000 1960 650cc Triton Reg. No. OAV 113 Frame No. R122D85914 Engine No. 01216 From the era of Quiffs and Cafes, the Triton is a legendary combination of the Norton featherbed frame and the highly tuneable Triumph 650 twin. No two of these creations were ever quite the same and reflected in no small degree the character of the builder. OAV 113 sports a 1957 aluminium head, twin carburettor, T110 pre-unit power plant with belt primary drive to a pre slickshift Triumph gearbox. Housed in a 1960 Dominator 88 Featherbed frame, the Triton is very handsomely finished with the 5 gallon tank, mudguards and primary belt drive case in black and the frame in red. Akront rims furnish the front and rear whilst clip-ons and a “bum-stop” seat finish off the suitably aggressive pose. The V5C document shows that the date of first registration is recorded as 1972 when it was issued with the Peterborough area OAV number. April 2007 saw the Triton feature in Classic Bike Guide magazine in a favourable comparison test with a Tribsa, since that time the vendor reports that a new speedo’ drive, oil pump and battery have been fitted and the 12 recorded miles since show the sparing use the machine has had whilst in its 14 year ownership. Supplied with an MOT and (duty free) tax both valid until August 2009 this is an opportunity to own a real head turning piece of period folklore. Estimate £3,500 - £4,500

1959 500cc Royal Enfield Meteor Minor Reg. No. DSK 904 Frame No. 6442 Engine No. 35060 A rare machine in its day and even scarcer now, the Enfield was more than able to hold its own in the 500cc class although its name did not help its image. The “Minor” was never inferior to its larger brother, the Super Meteor and its separate cylinder barrels and heads made DIY a breeze. DSK 904 has spent a portion of its life in Jersey from 1993, where it clearly had some love and attention lavished upon it as testified to by the quantity of invoices for parts supplied in the history file which also chronicles an earlier rebore and rebuild. Currently forming part of a private collection DSK 904 is presented with current V5C, an MOT valid until August 2009 along with (duty free) tax to the same date. An uncommon example of the marque in well presented condition Estimate £2,900 - £3,500
1951 500cc BSA A7 “Rigid” Reg. No. 944 UXM Frame No. ZA7 7575 Engine No. AA7 4210 An example of BSA’s vertical twin that was first announced in 1946. This 500cc A7 is one of the last produced with a rigid frame and chrome tank. The original buff log book supplied shows that 944 UXM, originally STW 717, was supplied direct to S A Coles Ltd of Leyton on the 22nd May 1951 and was sold from the showroom to Mr Gordon Lovat-Hack on the 31st December 1951, an original 1951 tax disc is also supplied. The vendor relates that the A7 was totally rebuilt by Cake Street Classics approximately 5 years ago and featured in one of the classic bike magazines in 2003. Owned by him since and only used for occasional local jaunts around Norfolk this very pretty machine is now offered with MOT valid until August 2009 and (duty free) road tax until May 2009, V5C documentation is present and the A7 is ready to ride or show. Estimate £2,700 - £3,200
1959 350cc Triumph 3TA “Twenty-One” Reg. No. NRG 432 Frame No. H9052 Engine No. 3TAH18206 The unit construction “bath-tub” 3TA was brought into the Triumph range in 1957 as a completely new model and also named the “Twenty-One” in celebration of twenty one years of Triumph Engineering since the 1936 takeover. Consigned from a private collection this example is believed to have been originally supplied by Furneaux & Co. in Aberdeen, purchased some while ago as a dismantled machine from the errant dismantler, it was restored and changed hands to a fellow Scot. Now very handsomely finished in blue, the engine number relates to a 1960 unit whilst the frame ties in with a 1959 number. Described by the vendor as being in very good condition in all respects, V5 documentation is supplied along with an MOT and (duty free) tax valid until September 2009. Ideally suited to those wishing for a lighter machine that has the distinctive period look. Estimate £2,500 - £3,500 1954 350cc AJS Model 16MS Reg. No. HFO 617 Frame No. A19444 Engine No. 23609 Built in typically AJS robust fashion this example of the swinging arm Model 16 thumper has formed part of a private collection in Scotland. Handsomely finished in black with gold pin-striping and matching livery to the wheels this very well presented machine is believed to have once been part of a museum collection and is described as “absolutely mint” by a previous custodian. Supplied with V5 documentation together with an MOT and (duty free) tax valid until September 2009. An easy to live with model from a greatly respected manufacturer. Estimate £2,500 - £3,000

1939 600cc Ariel Square Four 4F Reg. No. KMK 839 Frame No. AX547 Engine No. EE474 This Square Four would appear to have been last on the road in 1953 according to the accompanying tax disc. The photograph above was taken c1970 since when it has been dry stored in kit form. Now loosely assembled, the vendor states that known parts absent include rocker covers, petrol cap, headlamp glass and reflector. The plunger framed OHV “Squariel” has had its identity kept alive with the DVLA and consequently a V5 document is present along with an old style log book. Certainly now in need of some serious attention but majorly complete and with the all important documentation present, this is a project opportunity that does not come along often. Estimate £2,000 - £3,000
1955 Triumph Thunderbird Reg. No. TSL 596 Frame No. 70428 Engine No. 6T70428 A fine matching numbers example of the iconic 6T Thunderbird. The “T Bird” achieved a certain cache’ after being ridden by Marlon Brando in the film ‘The Wild One’ and was named after a motel stayed in by Edward Turner whilst on tour in the USA. Finished in blue, the vendor reports that he purchased the Triumph whilst at a Cambridgeshire steam rally some 5 years ago and it is still in as fine a condition now as when he was first smitten. With handsome liveried wheels and the desirable 4 bar tank badge TSL 596 is supplied with 12 months MOT and V5 documentation as well as a certificate of authenticity. Estimate £4,000 - £4,500 1951 600cc Norton Big Four Tradesman’s Outfit Reg. No. LXN 850 Frame No. E7 32782 Engine No. E7 32782 The “Big Four” moniker was used on machines between 1907 and 1954 which was the last year of the Norton side valves. Designed as a durable and reliable sidecar tug, both World Wars saw them do sterling service for various armies boosting their reputation for economy and reliability. This 1951 machine has been constructed some years ago as a chimney sweeps outfit and carries the tradesman’s box on the sidecar chassis, resplendent with its sign writing for “F Grimes Chimney Sweep” and compliment of sweeps brushes. In recent years this working mans machine whilst not ridden on the road, has been used at Cambridgeshire village shows and, of course, at weddings where the tradition of the “Kiss of Luck” from the sweep after the wedding ceremony is supposed to bring good fortune to the newly married couple. Stated to be in good running order and complete with V5C documentation, this London registered Norton is surely a novel proposition and ripe for film and TV work. Estimate £3,000 - £3,500

1976 350cc MV Agusta Sport Model 216 Reg. No. NGH 462P Frame No. 2160986 Engine No. 2160406 No other motorcycle marque has more charisma than MV Agusta. Every enthusiast knows that for over a quarter of a century the legendary Italian companies Grand Prix bikes dominated the world’s race tracks. During that same period MV also produced a range of exclusive sports bikes. The prototype of the 350 Sport Model 216 was first displayed as one of the star exhibits at the International Milan Show in November 1973 creating a lot of interest with its sleek, modern lines. For its time it boasted many advanced features including triple disc brakes, cast alloy wheels and electronic ignition. This 1976 example is not only in showroom condition but has the advantage of the original and expensive option factory supplied fairing. The machine is finished in MV’s traditional red and silver paintwork which adorned the GP bikes ridden by the likes of Surtees, Hailwood and Agostini to name but three of the star riders. A superb Italian sportster to add vivid colour and excitement to any enthusiast’s collection. Supplied with V5C documentation, MOT valid until May 2009 and road fund tax paid until April 2009. Estimate £3,800 - £4,300

1959 150cc Royal Enfield Prince “Airflow” Reg. No. HSU 243 Frame No. 53739 Engine No. RE46746 From the first year of production this Prince represents the model that replaced the Ensign, it bore the same engine but had much improved suspension. The Airflow fairing was a factory option and was offered for all models. HSU 243 has been consigned from a Scottish collector and is in very fine order indeed with nice detailing such as the Airflow decals and tyre pump in situ. An uncommon model that actually left the factory in Airflow trim and bears the rare early tank badges. In complete and restored state and running well, the Scottish Prince is supplied with (duty free) tax and MOT valid until September 2009 and V5 documentation. Estimate Refer to Department

979 750cc Triumph T140E Bonneville 19 Reg. No. BGL 581V Frame No. TBA Engine No. DX06729 An example of the oil in frame Meriden Triumph twins which started life in 1971 at 650cc and were enlarged to 750cc in 1973. Probably the prettiest variant, the export model sports the high rise bars and peanut tank and had a loyal following in period. Clearly the subject of plenty of “TLC” this machine is very tidy indeed and is reported to be running well when recently inspected. Finished in black and red with gold pinstriping, the vendor reports that a new speedo was fitted in 2002 and at that time, a new clutch, barrel and top end rebuild was carried out, a new battery was fitted in June of this year, an MOT valid until June 2009 is present along with road fund duty paid until November 2008 and V5C documentation. 1993 904cc Ducati Imola Special Reg. No. L93 VYJ Frame No. 013902 Engine No. 019398 Starting out life as a 1993 904SL, this machine was converted using the well known Baines Racing Project-Imola kit. The kit sought to emulate the style and nimble feel of the bevel drives whilst retaining the performance, reliability and simplicity of the modern 900SS belt drive machines. A lofty ideal that appears to have been achieved in this achingly beautiful machine. The Baines kit consists primarily of the bodywork, frame, swinging arm and sub frame along with pegs, levers, exhausts, aluminium fuel cell etc, a full specification is supplied in the history file. The modification was carried out by the vendor and then checked over by Baines Racing. The engine was also worked on with new bearings, seals and belts and Arais race pistons, paintwork was carried out by Morley Brothers of Milton and the over all result is suitably head turning bearing the plaque “No.6 Baines Imola”. Much more than a collection of parts the black and gold 80BHP Ducati is offered for sale with receipts, MOT and tax valid until March 2009 and V5C documentation. Estimate £2,900 - £3,600

1957 200cc Greeves 20TA “Scottish” Reg. No. TBA Frame No. 8011/TA Engine No. TBA This very early 20TA was, according to a copy of the factory records supplied by the Greeves Riders Association, despatched on 18th November 1957 to H Wood of Newcastle. The frame number shows that this is in fact No.11, No.1 was despatched on 26th October 1957, making this possibly the earliest 20TA known. The vendor relates that the machine was purchased in a partly completed condition and the restoration has been completed by him. The engine has been entirely renovated (believed to have been done by Villiers Services) and the distinctive “up & over” exhaust system is also new. New shocks are fitted and Moorland blue paintwork to the frame is complimented by the correct early light blue fuel tank. The restoration is such that this is essentially in the condition of a new machine, by the time of sale the Greeves will be registered with the DVLA for the first time in its life and already carries an MOT certificate. Running well on inspection and a great contender for pre 65 trials competitions and shows. Estimate £2,500 - £3,000

1991 750cc Triumph Daytona Reg. No. J824 YAO Frame No. 000910 Engine No. TBA This is an excellent example of a “new” Triumph from the first year of the Hinckley production. In 1991 production began from a brand new factory, and it wasn’t long before the public recognised their quality in performance and finish. The Daytona 750 was only listed for one year in Glass’s Guide, (1992), but they were in fact available for two years, thus making this machine particularly rare. With only three previous owners, and just over 43000 miles recorded on the clock, the machine is stated to be in good working order, with all original bodywork, a couple of minor blemishes to the fairing and exhaust are reported. Recently sold by Cheffins, a change in family circumstance force the sale. Complete with V5C. Estimate £800 - £1200 1970’s 250cc “MAC” Trials Reg. 2110 * 1964 AEC Matador Mk.2 Reg. No. 532 CVE The AEC Matador’s origins date back to before the Second World War and it is testament to its longevity as a utility vehicle that in 1960 a Mk.2 version was produced with a production run of just 44 up until 1965. The reason for this short production run is that it coincided with the release from the military of numerous Matador Mk.1’s through the Government surplus sales and auctions. 26 of the Mk.2’s were exported to South Africa with others destined to the Middle East, Africa and Australia. Several stayed in the UK although it is believed that this example is one of just two surviving examples in preservation. The present owner has used the vehicle as part of his forestry business up until recently. It was purchased by him in 1982 from D A Garnham & Son Ltd of Norfolk. This example is described in very good condition and is offered for sale with V5C. It is taxed until July 2009 and has an Engineering certificate until May 2009. A number of spares including trnasfer gearbox, 2 wheels and tyres, steel cables and Army ground anchor kit etc are offered for sale with the vehicle. It featured in Classic & Vintage Commercials in July 2002 pp50-53. 2111 2112

CHARLES BURRELL & SONS LTD 6nhp ‘Devonshire’ Class TRACTION ENGINE - ‘Iona’ Reg. No. BJ 6398 Works No. 3135 Built at Thetford in August 1909 Single cylinder compound piston rated at 6nhp Weight approx 8 tons Current boiler certificate to 22nd April 2009 Last hydraulic test 9th March 2005
Iona left the Burrell works on Saturday 26th August 1909 being supplied new to E W Brook, farmer of Woodbridge, Suffolk. Designed and built by Burrells as a smaller version of their much longer 7 and 8nhp threshing engines, the Devonshire class being rated at 5 to 6nhp was targeted at the West Country market and Devon in particular although many were supplied to small farmers of East Anglia. On an unknown date ‘Iona’ was in the ownership of E Farrow of Hargrave, nr Bury St Edmunds until it was purchased in 1938 at an auction sale by Shackcloth Bros, contractors of Great Snoring, Norfolk and then subsequently to B J Aldrige & Son, threshing contractors at Pulham Market, Norfolk who were the final commercial operators using the engine as part of their threshing fleet during and after the Second World War. Purchased by the present vendor in 1950 and almost certainly one of the few engines to have been brought into preservation at such an early time and to have remained in the same ownership for 58 years. From the 1960’s the engine was looked after and rallied extensively throughout East Anglia by the late Reg Stutely and his wife Iris and more recently by Paul Coupland. Reg carried out much work on the engine including a new firebox in 1995 and later it was re-tubed with a new smokebox, door ring, spacer and perch bracket restored. The front wheels have been re-bushed and front axle re-conditioned. This wonderful engine offers a rare opportunity to purchase an engine with an impeccable and historic provenance. Estimate £100,000 - £130,000

Pair of JOHN FOWLER & Co (LEEDS) LTD AA7 18nhp STEAM PLOUGHING ENGINES ‘Bessie & Cissie’ Reg. No’s CF3411 & CF3412 Works No’s 15236 & 15237 Build date: Tuesday 11th December 1917 Motion: Compound
Formerly an exhibit at the Bressingham Steam Museum, this superb pair of ploughing engines were originally supplied new to Messrs E W Baldock (later Arthur Baldock) of Haverhill, West Suffolk where they were assigned the registration numbers CF3411 & CF3412. By 1952 they had been acquired by a local Cambridgeshire scrap dealer Richard Duce who kept them in his yard for the next 10 years before Alan Bloom of Bressingham purchased number 15236 and named the engine Bessie and number 15237 was acquired by Messrs Savages of Kings Lynn. Two further owners of the engine no 15236 are recorded; Messrs E N Frost of Talconeston, Norfolk and in 1963 the Reverend R C Stebbing also of Talconeston. In 1964 the pair were re-united when Alan Bloom purchased the engine and returned the engine to Bressingham to be given the name Cissie. The engine remained part of the Bressingham collection until recently when they were sold to raise funds for the restoration of the LMS railway locomotive ‘Royal Scot’. The sale of these engines offer a unique opportunity to acquire a genuine pair of steam ploughing engines with good provenance. They are offered for sale without current boiler certificates. Estimate £175,000 - £200,000
