CARVING TALK

November, 2010

VOLUME VII NUMBER XI

Wood Carving Magic Show River Valley Wood Carvers had a excellent trip to Franklin, Indiana on Saturday, November 6th for the "Magic in Wood Show." We had three tables; Ron & Lucy Collins, Pat Scott, Don Hogue, Bob Manning and Dick Middleton participated. Everyone had a great time and we did some carving through the day. We also collected a number of ribbons in the competition. Pat Scott was the biggest winner with a first for her "Baseball and Hand", a first for her hanging house carved in Bark and a second for another bark carving. Don Hogue won a first for his "Black Duck" and a second in the Cane carving. Bob Manning won a second for his trilogy of shelf elves and a third for one of his famous cowboys. Dick Middleton won a first for his "Cowboy Fiddler" and a third for his Santa's Elf. Plus he also won the whittling contest for the afternoon. Also our own Bob Manning conducted an hour and a half seminar on how to carve a shelf elf. There were five entrants and we all had a lot of fun with these imaginary and creative characters. The fact is, we all had a lot of fun for the whole day even though the road repair detours were not marked at all and we all got to see a lot more of central Indiana than we planned on! :~)

President’s Comments Here it is; late in November and it's still lovely outside (at least for today). We are bearing down on Thanksgiving and Christmas is just around the corner. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Nothing is more irritating to me than stores that start hawking their Christmas wares in early November. So in honor of Thanksgiving, what do we have to be thankful for? I'm reasonable sure we all have a roof over our heads. A warm bed. A full belly most of the time. (Probably more than we really need.) Most of us have pretty good health and the prospects of decent health care. We have freedom to go where we want and do what we want (if we can afford it !?!?!?) The fact is the vast majority of us are way better off than most of the rest of the world. So this is a whole lot to be thankful for. But perhaps we could put carving on that list. After all, it's quite a pleasure to sit down at the work bench and spend some time, be it a few minutes or several hours, doing something we really enjoy. If we are lucky we end up with a finished piece we can be proud of; something to

show off or give to someone we care about. Or maybe give to some child in the hospital whose days really need brightening. Or to some service man or woman far from home on Christmas Day. How much more fulfillment can we expect than these things? Let's not forget the joy we bring to others that see our efforts in shows and displays. I have heard one simple word over and over again from people as they approach our table at various carving shows. "WOW!" That will give you the warm fuzzies for sure! Or how about the reaction our pieces get at various displays. Just this week, I had a librarian tell me our current display in Scheben Library is, as always, the most popular display they ever have. She instructed me to be sure to tell all our members what a fun thing it is for them to have our work on display. All these things make me thankful that I have carving. But I think most of all I'm thankful for the time I spend with other carvers, sometimes learning, sometimes helping, but mostly just soaking up the camaraderie and fellowship. Oh, Yeah! Let's all be thankful for carving ! ! ! ! HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE

Carving Tip: If you are right handed, When you carve eyes, carve the right eye first (left as you look into the face.) That way you can use this eye as a carving guide to a good, matching, left eye without your carving hand being in the way. Same thing when you are drawing or painting the eyes in: Do the right eye first! Lefthanders, the opposite.

CONGRATULATIONS are in order to Tom Denton. You ask, “Why?” Uhhhh, he received the “ICUTME” Award at the Stu Martin Seminar. A few years back, Pete Kutschenreuter and/or Dick Motzer carved a “Bloody Thumb” which has been carried by the last person “cut” and passed on to the new “cuttee.” Mickey was presented the thumb a while back and on the first day of the Stu Martin Seminar, Tom cut his finger. Well, Tom now has “The Thumb” and he’ll keep it until he presents it to the next one who cuts themselves. Think you want it, it is easy to get! :~)

Recognition Dinner The Recognition dinner will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 6:00pm, at Hill Top Church of Christ. Donna Waller and Jackie Huston are coordinating the event and hope you are planning to be there with your family and friends. If you haven’t signed up, you can call Donna at 513347-7291, but do it now. This year the club will provide the meat, drinks, condiments and the dessert. You are requested to contribute a salad or a vegetable side dish. If you call Donna and tell her you are coming, she will work out what she needs you to bring. A gift exchange will take place among those who have signed up to participate. Please bring your Christmas wrapped gift for the exchange. “You bring a gift, you get a gift” in exchange for it. Plan to join the rest of YOUR club to celebrate this special evening. Our Display at the Scheben Library Branch in Boone County The glare is terrible for picture taking but here they are anyway. Two display cases and they are two sided. We have a dozen or more members who have joined in the display. This is very good for our club. One of our aims is to promote wood carving and this does that. Thanks for letting your pieces be part of the display.

An Irishman who had a little too much to drink is driving home from the city, his car is weaving all over the road so a cop pulls him over. 'So,' says the cop to the driver, 'where have ya been?' 'Why, I've been to the pub of course,' slurs the drunk. 'Well,' says the cop, 'it looks like you've had quite a few to drink this evening.' 'I did all right,' the drunk says with a smile. 'Did you know,' says the cop, 'that a few intersections back, your wife fell out of your car?' 'Oh, thank heavens,' sighs the drunk. 'for a minute there, I thought I'd gone deaf.'
