2015 has started off with a blast. Both with the cold weather and with news about the new venture we are starting. We can not do anything with the weather but I want to announce our new venture. I have been asked by several companies’ that wanted to recognize Bob Hoffmann for all the things that he did to further recycling. At our January meeting the board of directors decided to start an Annual Bob Hoffman Memorial Scholarship. In order for the scholarship to become a viable option we have decided to have a golf outing. This will give us a chance to add some money to the Memorial Fund and sponsor some of our young people that want to stay in the industry. We talked about several different fund raisers and will start with the golfing outing. The July Board of directors meeting has been scheduled for July 11 in the Eau Claire/ Chippewa Falls area. We are planning to tour the Leinenkugels Brewery. Watch for more information coming to your e-mail and web site. Before we get to the golf outing we have the Upper Midwest Recyclers Convention in May. The date is May 7-9 in Waupaca. The venders are starting to call and get there booths and sponsorships. The attendee booklet will be mailed in March. This newsletter includes the vendor information packet. This info will be subject to change when more speakers and programs are added. Remember to check the web-sites carsofwi.com and recyclersconvention.com for further updates. We have a big year ahead so please join us for some education and fun. Sandy

Winter Workplace Hazards: Slips and Falls on Ice By the Minnesota Safety Council Last winter in the Midwest, slips and falls on ice and snow accounted for nearly one-third of all workers’ comp claims that resulted in lost time from work, including 29 percent of claims in Minnesota. EHS Today reports that winterrelated slips and falls claims doubled in 2013-2014 over the previous year, according to Accident Fund Insurance Company of America and United Heartland. An analysis of state winter falls data conducted by the Maine Department of Labor found that the majority of these type of injuries happened in parking lots, roadways, driveways and walkways where individuals travel on foot between their worksites and vehicles. About 8 percent occurred indoors; in entryways, hallways and other rooms where ice and snow had been tracked in from outside. Injuries in the Maine study ranged from minor bruises, cuts and abrasions to serious bone fractures, spinal cord damage and concussions. Strains, sprains and tears comprised the largest category. In addition to environmental factors that can increase the risk of slips, trips and falls, federal OSHA has identified the following human factors, all of which may be amplified by winter conditions: • Failing eyesight and/or visual perception • Age • Physical condition and fatigue • Stress or illness • Medications, alcohol and drug effects • Carrying or moving cumbersome objects or simply too many objects at one time • Not paying attention to surroundings or walking distracted

• •

Taking unapproved shortcuts Being in a hurry and rushing

To prevent winter slips and falls: •

Establish maintenance and indoor housekeeping procedures that support effective reporting and treatment (outdoors) or clean-up (indoors) of potentially hazardous areas. Place warning signs or cones near wet or slippery areas. Place floor mats at all entrances so people can wipe their shoes.

Individuals should: • • •

Slow down and take shorter steps when on a slippery surface. Be particularly alert in parking lots and when getting in or out of vehicles. Stick to designated walkways.

Executive Secretary Dumke Knitting for Babies in Her Spare Time

Baby Hats Donated To Hospital In my spare time this fall and winter I started knitting stocking hats that I donated to the Shawano Hospital. I had 44 hats ready to go and the nurses in the maternity ward were happy to get them. They said they get about 200 new babies a year. They said that the new mothers like to get a new hat to take home with their babies. I plan to do more hats and I have a couple ladies I know are thinking of doing that too. So if you have some 4 ply Worsted yarn that is not being used I am sure we can use it. Sandy Dumke

Upper Midwest Auto & Truck Recyclers Convention: Ladies and Kids Program The Upper Midwest Convention will be held on Mother’s Day weekend. We had the first weekend planed but had a conflict with another convention. I know this is an important time for the MOM’s so we have planed some pampering for them. We will have a massage/nails Spa for them. The time for this will be Saturday from 9:00 to Noon. At the same time we have set aside time for the kids. So the Mom’s can relax and not have to worry about watching the kids. The KIDS program will start on Friday from 9:00 to noon. They will be chaperoned and will make an ART Item. This will be at the same time as the foundry tour so the ladies can enjoy this very interesting tour. The children will be able to present their item at the Auction Friday night. Their art peace will be auctioned off and the child will receive ½ of the auction price. We will auction their items off first so they can get to bed at a reasonable time. There might be a couple other interesting things that will be offered so keep in touch on carsofwi.com and recyclersconvention.com websites.

ARA News for Safety Supervisors From ARA Work Place Safety Newsletter - Volume 6, Winter 2014 Don’t forget that New OSHA 300 Log Reporting Requirements (Went) Into Effect on January 1, 2015! Beginning January 1, 2015, all employers are required to report all work-related fatalities within 8 hours and all in-patient hospitalizations, amputations and losses of an eye within 24 hours of finding out about the incident. If your facility is regulated under an OSHA State Plan however, the new requirements may not go into effect until Jan. 1, 2016. REMEMBER, it is only the specific OSHA 300 log reporting provision from which employers with fewer than 11 employees can claim exemption. Facilities with any number of employees must follow other OSHA safety standards as required through Federal OSHA or an OSHA-approved state program. OSHA says that employers have three options for reporting these severe incidents. Use of Headphones Could Pose Safety Hazards (safety takeaway) How should employers handle the use of headphones in the workplace? According to OSHA , use of headphones and listening to “noise” at a level less than OSHA established legal limits is at managerial discretion unless its use causes a serious safety hazard...which would raise issues with employer compliance regarding OSHA’s general duty clause to provide a safe working environment.

Although OSHA sets legal limits on noise exposure in the workplace, it does not have a formal standard for use of headphone type devices. In a 1987 guidance memorandum, however, OSHA discourages the use of headphones in the workplace mainly “because excessive sound output can both drown out environmental sounds workers need to hear and threaten hearing.” This memorandum still serves today as guidance to employers. There is no OSHA mandate on the use of headphones in the workplace. Reprinted with permission.
