AXMINSTERS FROM AXMINSTER The best of British carpets have been made in the beautiful Devon town of Axminster since way back in 1755. Each one is made using wonderful wool from sheep grazing the rolling hills of Britain, spun and dyed in the UK and woven right here in Devon. It’s a guarantee of quality and it’s the way we work, even to this day. In fact, we’re proud to be a manufacturer that takes British wool from the fields to your floor, using the experience of generations of craftspeople. Their techniques have been handed down over the years, making Axminsters unlike any other carpets in the world. This traditional approach is a guarantee of quality and is why Axminster have invested in harnessing the craft with an injection of new technology. Right from the beginning, Axminsters have been highly sought after, warming the floors of manor houses, fine hotels, and private homes. Today it’s no different you’ll find our carpets in Royal palaces and first-class carriages, not to mention homes of all shapes and sizes, across Britain and beyond. CARING FOR YOUR CARPET So you’ve chosen your lovely new carpet, had it fitted and ‘oohed’ and ‘aahed’ at how gorgeous it looks. But, faced wit h dirty footprints, potential spills and constant trampling, what’s the best way to keep it looking beautiful? The good news is, wool carpets are naturally resistant to dirt. Their fibres make it harder for dirt particles to stick, so they’re easier to clean and keep their colour longer. Make friends with your vacuum A great-looking carpet is one that gets vacuumed regularly, ideally every day. If your vacuum has a beater bar or brush head, that’s even better. Take it slowly so the vacuum has enough time to clean from deep in the tufts, and concentrate on well-trodden areas like stairs, hallways and in front of chairs.
Protect against moths Moths can cause a lot of damage, so take extra care to clean around potential breeding spots like skirting boards, cupboards and heavy furniture. Think about wear and tear The position of your furniture will create areas that are more or less trodden on than others, so if your room is big enough, try to move things around occasionally. It’ll make you see your room in a whole new light too!
Know your carpet first aid Spills are going to happen, but tackling them in the wrong way can make things worse. The best thing to do in many cases is soak up as much liquid as possible with a clean cloth or kitchen towel. If it hasn’t soaked in yet, a final wipe leaving the pile in the right direction may do the trick. If not, see the carpet rescue guide on page 62.
Stair carpets can get a lot of wear and shifting them from time to time can really help. Ask for a little extra length to be left at the top and bottom so the carpet can be shifted, or order a little extra so you can replace worn areas if you need to. If your carpet runs right up to an external door, use a mat to catch dirt and grit on its way in. Always take off shoes with grips, like trainers, as they can tear the pile.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR CARPET CARE
NEW CARPET NIGGLES
1 Take your shoes off – it’s not just mucky footprints you’ll prevent; soles with grips can damage carpet pile. 2 Vacuum every day. That’s right, every day. If your vacuum has a beater bar or brush head, even better. 3 Move things around a little - reorganising your furniture can reduce wear and tear in certain places. 4 When carpet pile starts to look flat, vacuum against the direction of the pile to help lift it. 5 If your new carpet is shedding fluff, vacuum it regularly so it doesn’t clog the pile. 6 Deal with spills quickly so they’re less likely to stain. 7 Mop up spills gently using a clean white cloth – don’t rub! 8 Don’t believe the old wives’ tales – salt and white wine aren’t good for cleaning red wine, or anything else! 9 If you’re using cleaning products on spills, make sure they’re designed for wool carpets. 10 If in doubt, call in the experts. Your carpet is a big investment so it’s worth getting help with a tricky stain.
When your new carpet is first fitted, you might notice a few little niggles while it’s getting settled in. Don’t worry, they’re totally normal and won’t last long: Shedding – all new carpet sheds to begin with. Just vacuum regularly to stop it clogging up the pile. Sprouting tufts – occasionally little tufts are missed when carpets are sheared smooth and these can work their way to the surface. Never pull them, just cut them off level with sharp scissors. Visible bands – when carpet is stored on big, heavy rolls in a warehouse, it can develop crush lines. These will disappear within a few weeks with regular vacuuming.
