1908 - 2008

ALBERT HALL, NOTTINGHAM Saturday 26th April 2008 SOUVENIR PROGRAMME

From our Chairman Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen. Welcome to another concert by the Carlton Male Voice Choir. Another concert? Well, it's hardly that. This is not like any other. This is the Festival Concert in the Choir's 100th birthday year. We don't get those very often, do we? Back in 1908, Mattie Mann, a Netherfield coal merchant, began holding little musical soirees in his front room after work. Just he and three other men, we believe. They started singing together for pleasure; then more friends joined in; and one day they decided to put on a public performance. And that's how it all began. And here we are - 100 years later still singing in public. There are more of us, and no doubt our repertoire is a little wider than it was then, but what we are really doing is carrying on a great tradition of choral singing, and we love it. You may be aware that this year the Choir is supporting D.A.R.E., the anti-drugs campaign charity. It really is a privilege to be able to assist them in their stupendous effort of teaching young people the dangers of drug mis-use. We welcome their representatives with us this evening. So sit back, and on with the show. We've worked hard for this, and we hope you will really enjoy what you see and hear tonight. John Collier, Chairman, Carlton Male Voice Choir

Music Maker’s Trophy 2008 The Choir decided to commemorate its 90th anniversary in 1998 with an award which would show its commitment to supporting young musicians in the area. While touring Ireland it came across what was to become ‘the Music Makers Trophy’, to be awarded annually to the Clarendon College, now New College, student, who had made the most significant progress in the field of solo performance. The tenth winner of the Trophy in our centenary year is eighteen year old Rebecca Stafford, who started playing the piano when she was six. Rebecca pays tribute to Angela Smith, who has taught her piano throughout those twelve years. We are delighted that Rebecca will be performing for us this evening as she is currently very busy studying for her A Levels as well as working towards her Grade 8 piano examinations in June. Rebecca intends to take a year out before hopefully going to university to pursue her musical ambitions. We all wish her the very best for the future.

Winners of the Carlton Music Makers Trophy: 1999 Liz Mahon (Soprano) 2000 Nick Yates (Tenor) 2002 Patrick Shaw (Saxophone) 2003 Phillippa Thorne (Piano) 2005 Rebecca Matthews (Clarinet) 2006 Ruth Hodkin (Piano) 2008 Rebecca Stafford (Piano)

2001 Sara Lawson (Soprano) 2004 Rosalyn Curwen (Soprano) 2007 Lauren Broxholme (Soprano)

A Message from the Choir We extend a very warm welcome to everyone! It gives us great pleasure that you are able to share this celebration with us. The Netherfield coal merchant Mattie Mann could never have imagined what he was starting when he invited three friends round to sing part songs in the parlour of his home back in 1908. That simple house in Dunstan Street, featured in a drawing by choir baritone Cliff Laycock on the front of this programme, thus became the birthplace of the Carlton Male Voice Choir! After a long and occasionally difficult journey – especially when the Choir went silent in wartime and then when rival attractions like television threatened its numerical strength – we arrive at a packed Albert Hall in great spirit with perhaps our biggest choir ever! We are delighted that Mattie’s granddaughter, Jean Hancock, one of our life vice-presidents, and other members of the family, are in the audience tonight. Also we’d like to mention some our first tenors: Mike Smith and his uncle Roy, whose grandfather Tom Pole was a member of the original choir, and we pay tribute to Enoch Price, who has now been singing with Carlton for seventy of its hundred years – there must be something about those ‘tops’!

Mattie Mann

Mattie’s original quartet has now grown some twenty-fold but it is good to present a new ‘quartet’ of soloists – Joy Marriott, Florian Rago, Victoria Gray and Rebecca Stafford – all invited to take part tonight for a special reason. Each will display their own brand of melody and we hope you enjoy their musicianship and the variety they bring to the concert. As for our contribution, Terry has selected songs that respect and reflect the Choir’s history, including a brace of traditional numbers that are on our new CD “Give Thanks and Sing”, as well as two brand new arrangements written especially for this birthday occasion. We’re also looking forward to performing a few ‘party pieces’ with our special guests. And who better to ‘master the ceremonies’ than our old friend, the incomparable Andrew David? As for your good selves, all we ask is that you sit back and enjoy the concert, but do join us with customary gusto in ‘Jerusalem’! So, it’s “Happy Birthday to Us” - still waiting for that telegram from the Palace! We hope you have an enjoyable evening and look forward to seeing you at other centenary events. Once again, thank you for supporting the Choir. Here’s to the next hundred years! The Carlton Male Voice Choir

From Our President I am very pleased to welcome you all to the Carlton Male Voice Choir Festival Concert, in this, their Centenary year. The Festival Concert is always important, as it provides the opportunity for them to introduce new items to their concert programme. This is even more relevant in this landmark year, when they are all working so hard to make it very special - not only for themselves but also their audiences. We are always delighted to introduce to our programme, very talented supporting musicians and this year is no exception. Joy Marriott The Choir is honoured that Joy Marriott accepted our invitation to appear at this evening’s concert. Joy first sang with Carlton at the age of fourteen and has appeared as a guest in more Festival Concerts than any other artiste, including helping us celebrate our 60th, 70th and 90th anniversaries. Joy also featured in Carlton’s very first Albert Hall Festival Concert and at the concert when the Choir first wore its green blazers! There have been so many highlights in Joy’s long partnership with Carlton - but among the most memorable are her performance at a Silver Jubilee Concert broadcast on Radio Nottingham and an unforgettable visit to Aber Valley where her superb singing made a lasting impression in ‘the Land of Song’. Joy Marriott sang from a very early age (two and a half, she once told us!) and won honours at music festivals from the age of twelve. At fifteen she conducted a children’s choir and her all-round musical talents were recognized when, at the age of seventeen, she won a three year scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London. There she achieved her LRAM in teaching and performing, before returning to Nottingham where she became an established name in the East Midlands music scene. Joy performed with many choral societies, featured regularly as a concert soloist and belonged to the Grand Opera Group at Nottingham Arts Theatre, where she took the lead in many productions, including Aida, Turandot, Madam Butterfly and La Traviata. Nowadays, Joy sings with friends in the ensemble “Co-optama” and is also a member of the Nottingham Festival Opera Chorus. Joy’s performances have thrilled audiences and choristers alike over many years. She is also a long-standing friend of Carlton and as a Life Vice-President Joy is a valued ambassador for the Choir. The Choir is very much looking forward to listening to Joy and especially to enjoying the opportunity to sing with her again this evening.

Victoria Elizabeth Gray Victoria Gray, who recently celebrated her twenty-first birthday, first shared the Albert Hall stage with the Choir eighteen months ago in the ‘Music of the Midlands’ Concert for the CHUB charity, which is based in her home village of Bilsthorpe. At the time Victoria had just taken up a scholarship place at the Royal College of Music in London to study singing under Kathleen Livingston and we were captivated by her musicianship, stage presence and versatility. Growing up in a musical family, this former student of the Southwell Minster School displayed a love of singing and performing at a young age. For ten years she was a member and a principal soloist for the internationally renowned Cantamus Choir. With Cantamus, while studying under Pamela Cook, she sang in international competitions, performed with top orchestras and made professional recordings. In 2004 Victoria won first prizes in the under 18 and under 21 classes at the Mansfield Music and Drama Festival, receiving the Alfred Steel Trophy and Mansfield Music Club Bursary. In the same year she was awarded the Eduti Oulton de Pauley Prize for gaining the highest mark nationally in Grade 7 singing. In the following year Victoria again won the

under 21 class at Mansfield as well as attaining high grades at A-level and a distinction in Grade 8 singing. Then in October 2005 Victoria became the first singer to win the title of Nottingham Young Musician of the Year. In 2006 another prestigious prize came along: the John Ogden award, presented in memory of Mansfield’s greatest musician. Her successes led to invitations to perform with two professional orchestras, Pro Musica and the Orchestra of the Restoration. Victoria went on to audition at all five leading English music colleges and was offered a place at every one. Choosing the RCM, she is in her second year with studies that include master classes, recitals and concerts. Last summer, she was invited to France to sing in the Bauge Opera Festival and at Christmas was asked back to perform the Messiah in Angers Cathedral. Victoria has laid the foundations for a very successful career and we look forward tonight to witnessing the progress this fine young singer has made.

Florian Rago The Choir first came to work with Florian in 2003 at a Christmas Concert in St Peter’s Church, Nottingham, when as a very young man he enchanted us with his fine playing. In May 2005, he gave another stunning performance at Southwell Minster in the Choir’s ‘Beyond Tsunami’ Charity Concert and we have subsequently followed his burgeoning career with great interest. Born in Italy in 1988, Florian Rago took up the violin at the age of five. At seven he was awarded a Scholarship to attend Lincoln Minster School and made his concert debut in Lincoln Cathedral at the age of ten. A year later he was auditioned for and accepted by the Royal College of Music. In the years that followed, he won numerous awards and was chosen as soloist for many prestigious concert appearances. In 2005 Florian was invited to perform the Bruch Violin Concerto with the Orchestra of the Restoration and received a standing ovation. Recent highlights include solo performances in St Martin-in-the-Fields, the Bishopsgate Institute and in Italy, while in October, having been invited back by popular demand, he played Paganini’s First Violin Concerto with the Orchestra of the Restoration. Recently Florian played before a capacity audience to help raise money for the Lincoln Cathedral Music Appeal. In the summer of 2006 he performed Paganini caprices and solo Bach in Lincoln Cathedral. On that occasion a former Principal of Cheetham’s Music School said “I am sure you will agree that we are in the presence of genius.” What makes this even more remarkable is that only days later Florian had a successful pre-emptive kidney transplant from his father at Guy’s Hospital in London after having chronic kidney failure from the age of two. To perform for us this evening, Florian takes time off from his undergraduate studies at the Royal College of Music, where as Regalian Scholar he holds one of the College ’s oldest awards and we are sure that our audience will enjoy his virtuosity on the violin tonight.

FINALE:

Jerusalem (the Choir, our Guests, but chiefly yourselves!)

Jerusalem And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God On England's pleasant pastures seen? And did the countenance divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among those dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, Till we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land.

Thank you for coming this evening. Have a safe journey home.

Carlton’s Music Team The Choir is fortunate to have four men who are a ‘team’ in the true sense of the word. Without John Sellers, our Deputy Accompanist, and John Collier as Deputy Conductor, to support Terry and Roger it would be impossible to have the ‘split’ rehearsals and extra practices which help us towards tonight’s new repertoire. Terry Moore and Roger Holland have been friends and musical colleagues for almost a quarter of a century, a partnership that is so well tuned that one or other has occasionally (if wrongly) been introduced on stage as ‘Roger Moore!’ Choir members may think of Terry and Roger as ‘saints’ but this is taking things a bit far! As well as being a fine soloist, Roger is an accompanist of the highest order. His tastes range from the Carpenters to Chopin and from Beethoven to the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah FESTIVAL CONCERT 2007 Band and his aptitude for music runs in the family - Roger and Terry give Emily and Claire of guests daughter Rebecca has played flute in Carlton concerts, ‘Drum Blondes’ tips on how to play marimba! while son Thomas features on guitar on our new CD. [Nottingham Evening Post] Roger is proud to have been born and bred ‘a man of Carlton’ and although Terry cannot make the same boast he has lived and worked in Nottinghamshire for some thirty years. Tonight he completes thirteen years as Musical Director and while his musical talent is self-evident few outside the Choir see how hard he works for it, even more so coming into this milestone year. After leading the way in singing workshops which provided the first formal training for many Choir members and brought in a number of new singers who make their debut this evening, he organised and conducted the recording of “Give Thanks and Sing”; he has arranged music for the Choir to perform; and of course has planned and will lead us into tonight’s concert. Terry also somehow finds time for his day job ‘at the chalk face’; no wonder Choir members have tried to encourage him to retire from teaching so that he can devote a bit more time to Carlton! Without doubt, the Choir owes him an immense debt and tonight we hope to sing at our best to repay the dedication shown by Terry and the rest of the ‘team’.

Andrew David The popular Andrew David is an appropriate compere for our centenary celebration as he fulfilled the same role for the Choir’s 75th anniversary back in 1983. Andrew’s excellent presentational skills come from his long experience of broadcasting combined with a great knowledge and love of music. Andrew is a talented organist and former church choirmaster and has been connected with choirs for as long as he can remember! Andrew has spent his professional life in broadcasting. He worked in the music libraries of Radio 2 in the early 1970s and then for BBC Radio and TV from 1972 to 1991 as producer and reporter. In 1987 he was head-hunted to front the news for BBC Midlands TV and developed media skills which have since been transferred to a range of areas. He was well known to listeners through his “Sunday Breakfast Show” which recorded some of Radio Nottingham’s highest audience figures. Recently, Andrew has provided media training for broadcasters and company executives. He is also well-known as a conference MC as well as producing, directing and presenting training and promotional films for blue chip companies and UK charities. In 2006 Andrew was appointed Managing Editor of Siren FM, a community station based at the University of Lincoln which went on air in the summer of 2007.
