CARERS WEEK 8th - 14th June 2015

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. This year, the focus is on Building Carer Friendly Communities: communities which support carers to look after their loved ones well, while recognising that they are individuals with needs of their own. Carers Week is brought to life by the individuals and organisations who come together to organise activities and events throughout the UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is. Carers Week 2015 will be held on 8th - 14th June and once again will aim to improve the lives of thousands of carers across the UK and the people they care for. You can find information on events for carers in other boroughs by going to www.carersweek.org See Page 18 1for Carers Week Events in Bexley

CARE ACT 2014 UPDATE The Care Act 2014 came into force on 1st April 2015. This is an important piece of new legislation that will affect Carers and the people they care for that will mean lots of changes. The most important ones are: 1. As a Carer you have the right to ask for an assessment, information and advice where you appear to have needs for support, (regardless of whether the person you care for meets the criteria for services from the Council), and you may be eligible for practical support, like being able to take a break from your caring responsibilities. The Carers Assessment will consider the impact the care and support you provide is having on your own well-being and important aspects of the rest of your life, for example caring for a child for whom you have responsibility, maintaining other family relationships, continuing to work, or engage in education. 2. Whether or not the person you care for meets the criteria for support from local authority will depend on a set of national criteria, so this should not change wherever you move in the country. The assessment should focus on determining each person’s desired outcomes - i.e. what they would like to achieve in their daily life to continue living a dignified and independent life - and their well-being. The local authority will also be providing information and advice to enable Bexley residents, their families and carers to search for areas of support that is most appropriate for them. 3. Deferred payment agreements will become available across the country - meaning that people should not have to sell their home in their lifetime to fund their care and support costs. Further changes will take effect in April 2016, including a cap on care costs and the expansion of financial support for those who are eligible. Currently, you have to pay the full cost of your own care if you have savings of £23,250 and above. It is proposed that this will be increased from 1st April 2016 to £27,000 for community care and residential care where the value of your home is not included, and to £118,000 for residential care where the value of your home is included. For further advice and information you can contact Bexley Council on 020 8303 7777 (ask for ‘Care Act’) or Carers Support (Bexley) on 020 8302 8011 3

Carers’ Support (Bexley) now has a number of Support Workers who can provide flexible help for you with things like: • Shopping (either shopping for you or going shopping with you) • Housework • Preparing and serving meals • Company, companionship and ensuring the safety of the person you care for so you can go out with peace of mind • Taking the person you care for out and about • Accompanying you and the person you care for on trips out to provide an ‘extra pair of hands’ • Accompanying you and/or the person you care for to appointments (e.g. with the GP, hospital, optician, etc.) We are a registered charity set up by and for Carers of adults and children with disabilities and/or special needs. We are not here to make a profit, and any money we receive over and above our costs goes back into funding our charity. A big ‘Thank You’ to everyone who has supported us with fund-raising

Left to right: Councillor Geraldene Lucia-Hennis, Alison Baker, Councillor Sharon Massey and Dave Baker

Alison and Dave Baker were delighted to receive a cheque for £25,000 for Carers’ Support Bexley from Councillor Sharon Massey, which was the money raised for the charity during her year as Mayor of Bexley. The money will be used to provide respite for carers. ********

Four friends, Clare Churchill, Annie Ladbrook, Sandra Soler-Gomez & Maria Mason have been organising an annual Ball for several years now, where, as well as having a wonderful evening, they also raise money for local charities. This year the Ball was held on 24 January 2015 at the Brands Hatch Thistle Hotel and was attended by around 120 people. £2,500 was donated to Carers’ Support (Bexley) from the proceeds and we would like to say a really big “Thank you” to everyone who attended, but especially to Clare, Annie, Sandra and Maria for all their hard work.

Graziella Severi

- full time Volunteer Carer with Carers’ Support (Bexley) “My arrival to the United Kingdom happened on 7th February 2015, a cold and grey Saturday and a typical London day. The ‘shock’ began with the weather, as in the southern hemisphere, where I come from, it’s still summer. But now that the ‘shock’ has passed, I’m feeling more comfortable. Besides the climate, we (as new volunteers) need to adapt to many other things such as language, food, culture and so on. But regardless of any difference with my culture, I’ve got something very clear in my mind: to contribute to Carers’ Support (Bexley) and do my best and take full advantage of this opportunity. I will work as a volunteer for 1 year.

7

In Brazil, I was working as a journalist and also have a Bachelor’s degree in journalism from one of the most famous universities in our country. I decided to come to the UK because since I was a child, I was always curious about the British culture. Also, I thought this was a good time to have an experience abroad, now that I consider myself more mature and independent. I am 25 years old and graduated four years ago. In my country I also had voluntary work experience, but in that instance, the situation was totally different. There, I helped a poor community located in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. We assisted them with food donations and medicines, as well as providing activities that brought them new knowledge. I believe that I have much to contribute to Carers Support, especially l because my grandmother, Olivia who is 92, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease a few years ago. Although physically healthy, her dementia is now advanced. With this background and my understanding of her illness, I anticipate I will be able to have empathy to share with clients who have relatives of their own with this condition. I’m feeling very confident and positive about my current experience so far and look forward to meeting lots of families that I hope I can make a positive difference to.” Carers’ Support (Bexley) volunteers come from all over the world (including the UK) and provide care in people’s own homes so that their unpaid, family Carer can take a break. Worried about your memory? Memory slips happen to most of us some time or another, and are usually just a nuisance. As a carer you probably have to juggle many tasks in a busy day that may lead to feeling stressed and exhausted, which often results in us forgetting things. Having a break and being offered regular support by family, friends and local voluntary and statutory support services may help with this. But memory problems that are getting worse or starting to affect your daily life may be a sign of a medical condition. There are several medical reasons for memory loss, which can include depression, infections, vitamin and thyroid deficiencies, as well as dementia. It is important to see your GP as they can help identify the cause of the problem. If you are concerned, you should make an appointment to see your GP. If you are concerned about the memory of someone close to you, encourage them to visit their GP. You might start the conversation by gently asking the person if they’ve been feeling any different from usual or are struggling with anything. There are many services available to support people with dementia and their families - and the earlier you seek help, the earlier you will receive the support that can help you manage the condition. This also might mean that you can make important decisions and choices now about your future. There may be a time when you are no longer able to make some important decisions.

What is dementia? Dementia is not a single illness but a group of symptoms caused by damage to the brain. It is more common in people over 65, but dementia can also affect younger people.

What are the symptoms of dementia? Dementia affects everyone in different ways, but common symptoms include: • struggling to remember recent events, although you can easily recall things that happened in the past. • finding it hard to follow conversations or programmes on TV • forgetting the names of friends or everyday objects 10

• • • • • •

cannot recall things you have heard, seen or read noticing that you repeat yourself or lose the thread of what you are saying having problems thinking and reasoning feeling anxious, depressed or angry about your forgetfulness finding that other people start to comment on your forgetfulness feeling confused even when in a familiar environment.

What if it is dementia? Although there is currently no cure for dementia, with treatment, advice and support, many people who have the condition lead active, fulfilling lives. In some cases a specialist may be able to prescribe drugs that can lessen symptoms for a while. You should also be offered the chance to attend groups or take part in activities that may help you and any carer to cope better. Your local social services department can do an assessment and may be able to work with you to arrange or provide services to support you at home. If you are worried, contact your GP. For further advice, call the National Dementia Helpline on 0300 222 1122 (Mon - Wed 9am - 8pm, Thurs - Fri 9am - 5pm, Sat - Sun 10am - 4pm). Sing with us Singing for the Brain

What is Singing for the Brain®? Singing for the Brain® is a stimulating group activity, for people in the early to moderate stages of dementia and their carers, which can help with general well-being and confidence. You’ll meet others with similar experiences in a relaxed setting, and can join in a variety of songs, as much or as little as you like. The groups are run by our friendly staff and volunteers, and are led by a trained Singing for the Brain® leader.

How can the sessions help? •

People with dementia may find that music encourages them to express positive feelings and emotions.

• Well-known songs can evoke memories, and people with dementia who have communication difficulties may find that the music helps to enhance their communication.

• The groups encourage movement through hand percussion and actions along to the music.

• Through coming along to the sessions, people with dementia and carers can strengthen existing relationships, share experiences and find support.

About your local group Your local group meets every Friday from 10.30am until 12.30pm at Wolsey House, Wolsley Close, Crayford DA1 4BE. If you’d like to find out more about the group, please contact your local Alzheimer’s Society office in Bexley on 01322 524950/01322 559308 or by e-mail: [email protected] 12
