We’re on the MOVE…

A Few Words

Memory Walk is one of the best ways to honor a loved one who has or had Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. It is also a great way for companies to come together to show the community that they support charitable causes. For whatever reason you’ll be walking in September – we’ll all be on the MOVE to end Alzheimer’s.

Through the distribution of the questionnaire our goal is to provide the best possible service to people with dementia, their caregivers and all impacted by dementia. This is your opportunity to let us know how we can better serve you! We would greatly appreciate it if you would participate in our study by filling out a questionnaire form. A FEW WORDS

A Few (Final) Words…

OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS I always knew it had to come one day, and now, I’m looking at leaving my office for the last time in mid-June. How could eleven years have flown by so quickly? When I started this job in September of 1998, my mom was just being diagnosed with vascular dementia. Some of you might remember my writings about the long and sometimes torturous path we walked until her death in late 2005.

As difficult as her illness was for her and our whole family, the silver lining of that cloud was the solid base of understanding that I hope helped me to do my job better. Because I can never forget how she looked and how I felt, I’m able to tell you that I understand how you feel and mean it. We share that bond and I guess always will. Now I’m moving on to new challenges. I’m happy to report that Leilani Pelletier, our Program Director for almost eight years, will take over as the chapter’s Executive Director. I know she’ll do a great job because Leilani holds this chapter and all of you close to her heart. She has the enthusiasm, knowledge, and concern that we need to keep growing and caring for all persons who are impacted by dementia, including family and professional caregivers.

As for me, I intend to stay close to this chapter, which has become family to me. I hope to walk with you in September and link hands with you over the Rainbow Bridge on World Alzheimer’s Day.

WNY CHAPTER STAFF

But right now, my most pressing need is to express my sincere gratitude for all you’ve done to help us become the vital and effective chapter we are today. You’ve supported us financially and with love and energy. You show up for Memory Walk, Blue Moon Gala, classes, conferences, and committee meetings. We could never do this without you.

Office Manager

So – it’s been a super eleven year run for me. Thanks for sharing it with me. Now, I’ll count on you to stay in touch, support Leilani and the chapter team, and call when you need us. We’ll be here for you! God bless. Linda Sabo

Chapter Welcomes Two and Says Goodbye to One We would like to welcome Kelsey Harvey to our staff as our new Education and Training Coordinator. Originally from Binghamton, N.Y., Kelsey moved to Western New York after obtaining her Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance. In addition, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Services with a concentration in Social Gerontology from the University at Buffalo. She has worked and volunteered in long-term care for many years with most of her experience being gained while she was the Life Enrichment Coordinator at Clare Bridge of Niagara. In her spare time, Kelsey takes pleasure in many activities, including enjoying music, reading, and cooking. Kelsey resides in Snyder with her husband and dog. Our best wishes go out to Kim Lanthier, our former Information and Referral Coordinator, who is moving onto new challenges after nearly six years of excellent service to our chapter and community. Kim’s skill and care in serving people with dementia, their families and caregivers is unparalleled and a true testament to her devotion to the quality of life for those impacted by the disease. Kim brought warmth and a solid expertise in all dementia related issues to the thousands of families she has touched over the years. She leaves with our deep appreciation for her dedication, and leaves a solid foundation of work for the chapter to continue. We would also like to welcome Jennifer McCabe, MSW to our staff. Jennifer worked as an intern with the Chapter for the past year while attending graduate school. Upon graduating with a Masters in Social Work from the University at Buffalo, the Chapter brought her on as the new Information and Referral Coordinator. Over the past year, Jennifer gained a solid understanding of the Association’s mission and the individuals we serve. Now that Jennifer has crossed off “getting the right job after graduation” on her list of goals, she plans on adding passing her LMSW exam, which she will take before the fall. Jennifer resides in Lockport, and in her spare time she enjoys volunteering at the Greater Buffalo Counseling Center and spending time with her friends and family.

Caregiver Stress Can Be Eased If you are the primary caregiver for someone who is memory impaired, you may be experiencing stress. Most people recognize the tension and anxiety associated with stress. However, anger, withdrawing from friends, depression, exhaustion, sleeplessness and irritability also are common symptoms.

Some stressful situations can be managed by knowing how to react to a person exhibiting common behaviors of dementia. You can help alleviate agitation in a memory-impaired person by creating a calm, quiet environment. Use a soft voice. Listen to your loved one and act as if you understand what they are saying. Provide reassurance, using calm phrases such as “everything will be OK.” Do not correct or criticize or over-

One of the most important ways to deal with caregiver stress is to take care of yourself. Sometimes, that includes allowing others to help. Seventy-five percent of caregivers who don’t seek support end up getting sick themselves. If you are incapacitated, who will take care of your loved one? Seek assistance from other family members or community health care providers. Consider options like day care or respite care for your loved one so that you can occasionally experience a well-deserved and much-needed rest stop on this difficult journey. ElderWood Senior Care provides skilled nursing care, subacute care, rehabilitation, assisted living, independent living, memory care, cardiovascular transitional care and respiratory care to more than 5,000 people each year at 17 locations in Western and Central New York. Nine ElderWood skilled nursing facilities in Western New York have earned either Step 1, Step 2 or Step 3 Quality Awards from the American Health Care Association, the most prestigious honor in long-term care. It may be difficult to know the difference between age-related changes and the first signs of Alzheimer’s. As part of its public education effort, the Alzheimer’s Association has worked with a wide range group of experts to update its 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s to make them more current and user-friendly. The comprehensive review process included feedback from health professionals, clinicians, scientists and people with dementia. The revised warning signs are the cornerstone of Know the 10 Signs: Early Detection Matters, the Alzheimer’s Association’s national early detection campaign. The signs are a key tool in promoting recognition of common changes that may facilitate early detection and diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Early detection, diagnosis and intervention are vital because they provide the best opportunities for treatment, support and planning for the future. The revised list describes the following signs: • Memory changes that disrupt daily life • Challenges in planning or solving problems • Difficulty completing familiar tasks • Confusion with time or place • Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships • New problems with words in speaking or writing • Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps • Decreased or poor judgment • Withdrawal from work or social activities • Changes in mood and personality For more information about the updated 10 warning signs and early detection and diagnosis, contact the Alzheimer’s Association at 877.IS.IT.ALZ (877.474.8259) or visit www.alz.org/10signs.

EDUCATION & CAREGIVING

Keeping your mind and body active can help manage stress. Exercise, make time for friends, take advantage of activities; keep busy and involved outside of the duties of caregiving. Use relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, to help yourself through difficult moments. Become educated about your loved one’s condition. Accept changes in your loved one’s condition as they occur and give yourself credit that you are doing the best job you can.

TRANSITION TO USING HOME CARE SERVICES Q: I know my Mom and Dad need help in the home, but how do I know if it is too soon or how to go about arranging for care? A: If there was a choice, we know that most people prefer to age in their own home, close to their memories. So what happens when you may need someone to assist you to keep this fervent wish alive? As our population ages, this question is coming up more frequently for individuals and their families. When the need arises for In-Home Care, from companionship, meal preparation and transportation to nursing care and monitoring, using these FOUR W’S should reduce anxiety and assist in engaging the right in-home care company. WHY Several situations can spur the conversation for home care: • A health decline or a need to recuperate from a medical procedure. • The caregiver support system changes quickly without notice. • Physical changes that limit the ability to do everything around the house. • Safety concerns for the individual at home alone. • The caregivers are “maxed out” and need some breaks. • Finally, the deep desire to “stay at home!” WHEN The following signs become more evident to those involved: • Surgery recovery takes longer than normal. • Memory loss. • Trouble with activities of daily living (ADL’s). • Loss of socialization, loneliness. • Medication management troubles. • Proper nutrition. • Existing dedicated, support system can no longer do everything, and need to restore balance to their lives. WHAT The following suggestions will help you decide how best to move forward: • Talk with existing caregivers, spouse, children, and neighbors, if involved. • If recovery from illness or surgery, determine how much care, the cost and how long recovery will take. • Ask the question, can I or my loved ones stay home safely? What kind of help is needed? • Establish a reasonable budget, and compare with alternatives such as assisted living or nursing home placement. • If you are interested in hiring a caregiver, ask “what could they do to help me stay happy, healthy and at home?” WHO This is the biggest but most important step: • Use the phone book, internet, word of mouth to start your search for appropriate care. The Alzheimer’s Association also has helpful lists of these services.• • Meet with at least two agencies and bring a loved-one or family member with you to help you navigate this system. • Ask to have a professional assessment completed by the agencies. • Finalize what services will be in place to assist you. • Select an in-home care company that is able to verify their background checks for caregivers, is well known in your area and that you feel comfortable with. • Ask to meet proposed home health aide in advance, and make sure it’s a good fit. • Finally, review your needs on a regular basis, and make sure to keep in touch with your care providers.

New Study Shows Cognitive and Social Activity in Midlife May Reduce Dementia Risk in Men Participation in a range of cognitively and socially engaging activities in midlife reduced risk for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in men, particularly those at elevated genetic risk for the disease, according to a study published in the September 2008 issue of Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association. “This fascinating study provides some of the first relatively strong evidence that cognitive activity, including social interaction, reduces dementia risk,” said William Thies, Ph.D., vice president of Medical and Scientific Relations at the Alzheimer’s Association.

In this study, which is part of the Duke Twins Study of Memory in Aging, the researchers divided cognitive activities into three categories – novel, intermediate novel, and passive/receptive – to discriminate activities that involved the active processing of new information from activities that were more passive or receptive in their processing demands. • Receptive activities included watching television, listening to radio, and going to movies, theater, art or music. • Novel activities included reading, studying for courses, and extra work (overtime or other employment). • Intermediate novel activities included home and family activities, visiting with friends and relatives, club activities (such as attending parties and playing card games), and home hobbies. The researchers found that participation in intermediate novel activities was most strongly associated with reduced dementia risk. “These activities might be indicative of an enriched environment, which has been shown in animal models to enhance the creation of new brain cells and promote brain repair,” said study author Michelle C. Carlson, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Mental Health and Center on Aging and Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. A growing body of evidence suggests that low social activity is associated with increased risk for Alzheimer’s, and that mid-life and late-life social engagement is associated with better cognitive and physical health, even when there is Alzheimer’s pathology in the brain. “Overall, these findings suggest that engaging in activities that incorporate both cognitive and social activity might confer protection against Alzheimer’s and dementia, particularly among those at elevated genetic risk for the disease,” Carlson said. “These results can help inform future preventive interventions, especially because they point to a range of activities that individuals are likely to maintain because they are rewarding, entertaining, and engaging.”

Have you lost a loved one to Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia within the past year? Do you need to share your grief with others in a similar situation? Join us for a 6 week session on coping with loss at the chapter office located at 2805 Wehrle Drive, Suite 6 in Williamsville. Sessions begin Thursday, September 24th, 2009 and will meet every Thursday through October from 10 – 11:30 a.m. The group will focus on the changes that individuals experience after the death of a loved one and provide an atmosphere of mutual support, understanding and confidentiality. The fee for this 6 week series is $25.00. Space is limited, and pre-registration is required. Please call the Association at (716) 626-0600 to reserve your spot.

Annual Family Caregiver Conference Was A Huge Success Our sincere thanks goes out to Park Creek Senior Living and Home Instead Senior Care for their sponsorship of our annual Family Caregiver Conference. Each session was attended by over 80 participants. The conference was held at the Leonard Post Jr Post No. 6251 VFW on Walden Avenue on April 8th and April 22nd from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Presenting on April 8th was Anne Doetterl, Director of Memory Care Services at ElderWood Senior Care. She presented valuable information to help caregivers better balance their emotions and health. On April 22nd, Judith Hutson, Administrator of Erie County Medical Center Skilled Nursing Facility presented the audience with an overview of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. On both evenings, 23 community vendors were on hand to share information about local services with those in attendance. Food, kindly donated by Pesci’s Pizza in Williamsville, and beverages sponsored by Weinberg Campus were served. Thank you again to our sponsors, planning committee and event volunteers who helped make this another successful conference.

RESEARCH & SUPPORT

Researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, MD, and Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC, conducted a 28-year prospective cohort study of 147 male twin pairs followed for dementia. They found that participants who had greater midlife cognitive activity in their leisure pursuits had a significantly delayed age of onset of dementia.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT THANK YOU BUFFALO BILLS CONCESSION STAND VOLUNTEERS

Office Support Caroline Barth

This past fall, the Association embarked on a fundraising adventure – running a concession stand at each home Bills game. Everyone’s hard work resulted in us raising $5,850, which included a bonus for coming in 2nd out of 38 other non-profit groups based on things like appearance of workers, cleanliness of stand and customer service. The fundraiser would not have been a success if it was not for all of the volunteers listed below who came out to help run the stand. A special thank you also goes out to Colleen Wenzel, the Association’s Finance Director, for organizing the volunteers and being our stand leader. Supporting Our Mission Over twenty-five years ago, the Alzheimer’s Association, nationally and locally, was founded by concerned families and community members who wanted to make a difference in the lives of those affected by dementia. Today as in years past, volunteers are an integral part of the Chapter’s ability to provide programs and services to our community. We value the contributions each volunteer gives to the organization. Details on all volunteer positions are available on the agency website. Check under “Volunteer in WNY” for the perfect opportunity for you or e-mail [email protected].

Race to Remember… The Stakes are High The Race to Remember is a fundraiser around the Triple Crown horse races – the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. Purple pails with the “Race to Remember” logo were filled with Triple Crown party recipes for anyone interested in hosting a party or trying award winning recipes named after the events. These pails were then offered to people on Kentucky Derby Day which also happened to be the evening of the Blue Moon Gala! For those of you who may have received a purple pail from the gala or during the month of May, please call the Association and we will make arrangements to pick it up from you. Thank you for your support. Look for the purple pails next year…Derby Day is May 1, 2010!

On the evening of May 2, 2009, a group of approximately 440 people gathered for a good time and a great cause. The Alzheimer’s Association’s Blue Moon Gala “Saturday Night Fever” was a wonderful evening of fun, friends and some pretty funky dance moves! Over $107,000 was raised to support local programs and services that the chapter provides throughout the eight counties of Western New York. We would like to thank all of those who joined us that evening and those who supported the event through volunteering and the donation of auction and raffle items. Leaving a Legacy…Many Ways to Give

Buying or Selling a Home?

Each year the Alzheimer’s Association Western New York Chapter receives unexpected bequests from friends and supporters. While we are always very grateful for these gifts, notifying the chapter when making a bequest allows us the opportunity to recognize and thank each and every donor.

Summer is a popular time for people to be buying and selling homes. If you or someone you know is planning on buying or selling a home, please consider using Mike Olear, Licensed Real Estate Broker, of MJ Peterson/Olear Realty Group. Mike is passionate about our cause, and he would like to donate $300 from every home sale to the Alzheimer’s Association. There will be no mark up in realtor fees to recover the $300 donation, and the only thing you have to do is mention at your first meeting that you heard about the donation program from the Alzheimer’s Association. Then, Mike will make sure the donation is made once the sale is finalized.

By becoming a member of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Remembrance Society you will ensure your support in helping move towards a World without Alzheimer’s. Gifts can be made through wills, charitable annuities, IRA’s and other means and there can be tax benefits to using these tools. Anyone who is interested in providing these types of gifts should consult with their legal counsel, financial advisor or other professional to insure that the best tools are chosen for their individual situation. Some of the options are outlined here. Provision by Will (Bequests) Cash, securities, real estate or personal property can all be given to charity through a well-planned will. Bequests can be restricted to specific program or purpose or unrestricted. Please remember that gifts of all sizes are significant to us. A bequest can be stated simply as follows: “I give and bequeath to the trustees of the Alzheimer’s Association, Western New York Chapter ____% of my total estate (or $_____ or other property).” Name the Alzheimer’s Association as Beneficiary to Your Retirement Plan and/or Life Insurance Policy You can designate the Association as the final beneficiary of any remaining funds which you or your loved ones do not use. This type of gift can be designated when the fund is first established or added at a later time, by requesting a change in beneficiary. A specific amount or percentage of assets can be allocated to the Alzheimer’s Association. Enter into a Gift Annuity Agreement with the Alzheimer’s Association Through a charitable gift annuity, you can make a gift to the Association and receive fixed annual payments for life. The payment amount (annuity rate) is based on your age. This option has the potential benefit of minimizing taxes. There are many other ways to make planned gifts, and if you are interested in learning more, please call the Alzheimer’s Association at (716) 626-0600. You may also fill out the form below and mail it to the Chapter. By becoming a member of the Remembrance Society, we have the opportunity to thank you for your generosity and celebrate your commitment to ending Alzheimer’s disease. Save the Date WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY CELEBRATION – SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20TH Last year, the Alzheimer’s Association, WNY Chapter joined forces with the Alzheimer Society, Niagara Region in Canada to celebrate World Alzheimer’s Day (WAD). The Falls were illuminated in each organizations respective colors on the eve of WAD, and we had a small get together prior to spanning the Rainbow Bridge to watch the illumination. We are hoping to do the same thing again this year. So mark your calendars now, and look for more details to come. We need hundreds of supporters to span the entire length of the bridge so make sure to invite friends and relatives to be a part of our special celebration too.

GAME ON! BLONDES VS. BRUNETTES COMES TO BUFFALO The age-old rivalry of Blondes vs. Brunettes (BvB) will invade Western New York this fall! On Saturday, October 17 at Sweet Home High School the Alzheimer’s Association’s first-ever Blondes vs. Brunettes powder puff football game will be played! The game starts at 2:00 p.m. There will be prizes, giveaways and a 50/50 split raffle at the game. Sweet Home High School has been kind enough to run the concession stand for us and donate all of the proceeds back to us! The mission of BvB is to bring together prominent, civic minded leaders for a series of events, raising awareness and funds benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association. BvB was created in 2005 by young, professional women in Washington D.C. Since then, it has created a buzz across the country, which has led other chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association to run their own annual BvB games. Co-Chairpersons, Tracey Callisto and Chrisi Pearl, need your support. Sponsors, participants, referees and other volunteers are needed. Yes, men, we need you too as volunteers, cheerleaders and coaches! Each player needs to raise at least $100 and sell 4 tickets at $25.00 to the game. It’s going to be a blast! Please visit www.bvbbuffalo.com for sponsorships, donations, volunteering, and player information. TOUCHDOWN!

Cheese Please The Cheese challenge is back again in its third year, and it could be coming to your favorite pizzeria, sub shop or deli soon. Between August 16th and September 12th, 2009 local establishments are welcome to participate in the Cheese Challenge by selling paper elephants to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. It is not uncommon to see these elephants decorating entire walls of restaurants or pizzerias.

Wendy and Allen both indicated that this very supportive community is what made the Cheese Challenge such a success for them last year when they came in second place by raising over $700. We are very grateful to have business owners like the Wilson’s who help support our vision of ending Alzheimer’s disease. In 2008, first Place went to Pesci’s Pizza on Main Street in Williamsville (Transitown Plaza) and third place honors went to Johnny’s Pizza of Cheektowaga (4841 Union Rd.) Thank you to Pesci’s, Chris Phillips and Johnny’s Pizza, Rita Grieco respectively. If you are interested in learning more about the Cheese Challenge or having your favorite establishment participate, please contact the Alzheimer’s Association at (716) 626-0600.

In cooperation with Bankers Conseco Life Insurance Company, the Alzheimer’s Association, WNY Chapter, participated in the nation-wide fundraising event Forget-Me-Not Days. Volunteers were in the community providing ForgetMe-Not seeds in return for donations. The seed packets were printed with the 1-800-272-3900 Helpline number and the alz.org website address, making it easier for people to reach us. Our thanks goes out to Surgit Singh, local Bankers Conseco Branch Manager, Kathleen Marshall and all the employees of Bankers Conseco who gave their time to staff the tables at the Boulevard and Eastern Hills Malls. Renee Mecca of Invitrogen Corporation on Grand Island had such a great response from employees at the firm that she was able to coordinate multiple volunteers at 2 locations on Grand Island, and together they raised over $300. Nancy Swiston, Elaine Meyer and Katie Meyer staffed a table at the Tonawanda Farmer’s Market while Diane Ginter, Julia Schrader and Linda Sabo were present at Ulbrich’s Garden Center in Alden. Thank you to the businesses that allowed us to set up tables at their locations and the many more volunteers who helped staff them across the area. The event not only raised needed funds but also raised awareness.

That was the case in September 2008 for Wendy Wilson (left) and Sarah Harlock (right) Wilson’s Pizza Shop and Deli located at 2730 holding the pizza pan plaque Wilson’s Pizza Shop and Deli received for their second place Main St., Newfane, NY. The pizza shop opened in 1963 by Allen Wilson Sr. and his finish in the 2008 Cheese Challenge wife Rosalyn. In 1989 their son Allen Jr. and his wife Wendy began operating the shop. Serving the community for 46 years, this family owned business has seen many generations grow up and people who have moved away often make Wilson’s Pizza Shop their first stop when they are back in the area! Wendy said, “It is not a job. We feel very fortunate to be here.”
