CAMP WINTON LEADERS GUIDE

2016 SEASON

Welcome to Camp Winton! We are elated that you have chosen Camp Winton for your summer camp experience this year, and we look forward to meeting and exceeding the expectations that you have for your troop’s summer camp experience. This guide will give you a look into what we have to offer you and your scouts this summer, as well some policy and administrative things to make you prepared for the best summer yet at Camp Winton. Whether you are here for our stellar waterfront program, breadth of exciting opportunities for adults and youth alike, wonderful ranges, or remote forest setting, all of us at Camp Winton look forward to assisting you and your unit in creating the best summer camp yet. In order to cover all information and answer any questions before you get to camp we will be having a PreCamp Meeting on May 7th, 2016 at 1:30pm, look for emails regarding location and what to bring in order to be prepared for the meeting. One major change is that all merit badges will be signed up for before camp starts and all merit badge fees will be payed online before arriving at camp, then scouts will not have to carry excess money around and the supplies will be ready to pick up at the program area. We all look forward to meeting you and answering any questions about the changes to our program this year. If you have any pressing questions or need to have needs addressed sooner than the meeting in May please contact the Camp Director or Council Camping Department. 2016 MERIT BADGE SCHEDULE COMING SOON! Yours in Scouting,

THE 2016 WINTON STAFF

CAMP WINTON LEADERS GUIDE

2016 SEASON

ARRIVAL DAY!!!! Everyone is going to be extremely excited for the first day of an amazing week of camp and being prepared will only make it an easy process for you, your scouts, and the staff. You and your troop will have the option to have troop gear that cannot be carried into camp taken over on Das Boat at the north end of the lake before crossing the dams, troop items include patrol boxes, flag poles and stands and any other necessary group items, it does not include tents, backpacks, or any personal gear (unless it has been pre-approved by the lead commissioner). After that your troop will head over to the parking lot at the top of camp where you will meet your staff guide who will lead you through camp, to your campsite, trough orientation/med checks/swim checks. Since you will have fully packed arrival activities it is imperative that you show up on time; Sunday Start Weeks 1pm and Monday Start Weeks 6am. For med checks you will need:       

A copy of every persons BSA Health Forms parts A, B and C A copy of the Parental Authorization for Medical Treatment for every scout A copy of the Parental Firearm Authorization for every scout 3 copies of the unit Youth Protection Roster 3 copies of the unit Camp Roster Any early release forms signed by the legal guardians Tour permits for out of council Units

We also recommend that troops coming for Sunday Start Weeks have their scouts wear their swim trunks underneath of their BSA field uniforms while traveling to camp to minimize wait time during swim checks. The staff will see you at the top of the road, excited to bring you an outstanding summer camp experience in 2016.

CAMP INFORMATION AND POILCIES 

TOUR & ACTIVITY PLANS Every unit attending camp is encouraged to file a tour plan. Out of council units are required to fill out a tour permit with your council service center and bring a copy to camp for registration and check in. The unit leader will retain the permit for any emergency situations.

PROVISIONAL CAMPERS Any scout, who cannot, for any reason, attend camp with their troop’s week of camp, can attend camp as a provisional scout. Contact the Council Camping Department for more information

CAMPERSHIPS At times, it can be difficult for a Scout and his family to raise the full fee for summer camp. Limited financial help is available from the Golden Empire Council on an individual basis for Scouts who could not otherwise go to camp due to financial hardships. Scoutmasters in the Golden Empire Council who know of any youth with a legitimate need for financial help are encouraged to help that Scout apply for a Campership. The Campership Application is available at the Council Service Center or on the council website www.gec-bsa.org/camping/campforms.

REFUNDS The council camping department goes through great lengths to ensure a quality summer camp program which includes making commitments to staffing and food distributors and therefore will assess refunds on a case by case basis. Contact the council camping department for more information.

VISITORS TO CAMP Visitors are welcome at any time. However, Fridays are the best day to visit. All visitors must check in with the Camp Director upon arrival. Guest meals are available for a modest fee. Siblings and friends are not allowed at camp without prior explicit permission from the camp director or council program director. No pets allowed in camp except service animals.

CAMPFIRE PERMITS All fires held inside of camp property are covered by the Camp Winton fire permit, but if your troop is planning on going on a canoe or hiking trek out of camp you must obtain your own fire permit for the El Dorado National Forrest The Following Rules Apply: 1. No liquid fuel stoves or lanterns 2. Never leave a fire unattended (even while sleeping) 3. Smoking is prohibited in all areas of camp 4. No personal firearms or fireworks of any kind are permitted in camp

CAMP WINTON PROGRAM OFFERINGS 

DAILY LEADERS MEETINGS Each day at 10:00AM unit leaders gather in the Lodge for a meeting with the Camp Director, Program Director, and Lead Commissioner. This is a great opportunity for us to see how things are going. This is also a good time to relax and exchange ideas with other unit leaders as well as plan for the upcoming days and check up on your boy’s progress in their merit badges

SPL LUCNH MEETINGS Many camp wide events are decided by this group. Information about upcoming camp activities and special events is distributed through the camp Senior Patrol Leader’s Council. Sign-ups for flag ceremony, service at meals, and cleaning are done at this meeting. The SPLC has a daily luncheon with the Commissioner staff. After the daily meetings, the Senior Patrol Leaders return to their units and share the latest information.

CAMPFIRES Winton’s excellent night time program will be back again with the following servings: o Opening – A rousing opening night campfire sets the spirit for the adventure to come in the week ahead. Skits, songs, and storytelling add to the excitement of your first evenings in camp. o Wednesday NightThis is a camp wide program, which is put on by all the units in attendance at camp. Run by Camp Commissioners with the assistance of your SPL’s, this is quite often one of the best times for both campers and staff. o TRIBE OF WINTON – Conducted on Thursday nights and all Scouts in camp may participate. The program is based on Scouting Skills and Indian Lore. Scouts participate in a progressive campfire program and are excused to return to their campsites after each ceremony. This program is a lot of fun for Scouts of every age. Information will be discussed at the Pre-Camp Orientation Meeting and at the leaders’ daily meeting. o ClosingOur Friday evening farewell program gives Scouts time to reflect on the comradeship, experiences, and achievements of the week past. A formal US Flag Retirement Ceremony concludes this campfire.

ADVENTURE TEAM First Class Scouts and above (including adult leaders) are encouraged to participate in these bonus time activities which are scheduled each day after normal program areas close. The schedule varies with time and activity. A special patch is available in the camp trading post for those who complete three “adventures
