The exam is 1 hour 45 minutes and there are three sections.

Question 1 – Reading – 35 minutes

Question 2 – Writing – 35 minutes

Question 3 – Summary – 35 minutes

Cambridge IGCSE – Core Paper – Exam Top Tips 40 of the 50 marks for the paper are based on your reading skills – take the time to read the extracts carefully!

Make sure to read the sentence in italics as this gives you a summary of what the text is about.

Make sure to keep going back to the text and looking at it throughout the exam.

Own Words Summary: Read the section and then use your own words to explain the key points made.

Info Retrieval: A question where you need to find the information to answer a specified question.

Own Words Explain: Explain the meaning of specific words.

Find / Explain Quotations: Select quotations and then explain the reason for their impact on the reader.

Cambridge IGCSE – Core Paper – Exam Top Tips Even if you are finding it hard to explain the quotations in a find / explain quotations task, pick out some quotations to gain some marks. If you are being asked to find information from the text, make sure to pay attention to what exactly you are being asked to find.

To help you to understand a quotation, go back to the text and read the surrounding sentences.

If you are being asked to explain individual words in a quotation, you need to think of a synonym for the word (a word with a similar meaning).

For the passage summary question, read one paragraph at a time and write down the points from this before moving to the next paragraph.

You can use the three bullet points as your paragraph structure and write one paragraph for each of these. You should aim to write around ½ a side for each bullet point.
