Speaking task Instructions to the teacher Using the Speaking task

Work with two or three students. Give each of them a stimulus sheet and explain that it gives examples of hobbies that people do in their spare time. Give them a chance to read it. Ask each student in turn to say what sort of things they like to do in their spare time.Ask open questions to gain more information:‘What do you like about camping, John?’ ‘How did you start collecting stamps, Susan?’ When all students have had a chance to speak, move to the second stage of the interview. Start by saying,‘Some people say that watching TV is a waste of time. Do you agree, John?’ Try to develop a discussion about the relative merits and dangers of watching TV. After each student has made one or two comments, draw the task to a close. Marking the Speaking task

During the interview, make two independent judgements about the speaking ability of each student. The first is about communication: can the student describe his/her interests in a way that a native speaker would understand? The second is about the quality of the language used: does the student use appropriate vocabulary, structures and grammar when explaining interests and opinions? For each judgement, a score of 0–5 is awarded giving a total score of 0–10. Band descriptors are provided below to clarify the marking system. Communication
