PHILOSOPHY Our purpose is to acquaint the students with that important and substantial information about life and the world called “knowledge” and to aid students in the development of the principles of morality, discipline and self-reliance. All students are included in this task whether eager to learn and to grow or reluctant to do so. It is our responsibility to help as well as to guide them to think critically, to form mature judgments and to assume a role in society which models mature and dedicated Catholic Christians. We seek to prepare students to become integral parts of the world in which they live, to interpret it intelligently, to contribute to it positively, and to change it responsibly. We provide a moral, ethical, spiritual, and aesthetic view that encourages personal responsibility, service to others and love of neighbor. We provide academic programs that stress high standards, and we offer varied extra-curricular activities that encourage cooperation and competition. We provide a concerned, caring community of dedicated teachers, staff and administrators. Our process of education will be successful with the cooperation of the home, the school and the students. The following objectives are the means by which we implement our philosophy: Spiritual: - provide courses in religious studies for all students - encourage participation in the liturgy, sacraments, prayer, and apostolic activities - provide individual spiritual direction - provide retreats - develop an awareness of the importance of social justice - provide opportunities for community service Intellectual: - maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning - offer a curriculum which attempts to meet the needs, interests and abilities of the students - encourage participation in the fine arts - encourage self-directed learning - develop in each student the ability to think, read, write and speak intelligently, independently and clearly - provide for the on-going professional growth of the faculty Emotional - maintain a sensitivity toward the various levels of emotional maturity of our students - provide personal, as well as group, guidance and counseling Physical - develop an appreciation for good health and physical activity - provide physical education - offer interscholastic athletic activities - provide health care and allied health services Social - encourage a responsible attitude toward family, Church and community - encourage the utilization of facilities and activities available throughout the community - provide opportunities for social interaction within the school community

Grade Reports

ACADEMIC POLICY Admissions and Placement

Eighth-graders seeking admission to TCHS are required to take an Entrance Test. The results of this nationally evaluated examination are used in conjunction with the student’s elementary school records to determine placement qualifications in one of the college preparatory programs. Transfer students must supply all school records and standardized test scores from the school previously attended. TCHS admits students regardless of sex, race, color, religion or national or ethnic origin.

Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate, students must earn a minimum of 27 credits. Included in these credits must be: Department Religion Reach Out English Social Studies World Languages Mathematics Science Computer Technology Fine Arts Physical Education

Required 4 Credits 1 Credit 4 Credits 4 Credits 3 Credits 4 Credits 4 Credits 1 Course 1 Course 1 Credit

Promotion and Graduation Requirements

In order to be promoted to the next grade, any failure must be remediated in an approved summer program. Seniors are expected to pass all courses before receiving a diploma. Any senior who fails a course may not participate in the graduation ceremonies. Students are not eligible to be either salutatorian or valedictorian unless they have been at Trinity Catholic for four (4) years.

Examination Policy

TCHS gives an accumulative examination of 1½ hours at the end of each semester. This exam is weighted 20% of the semester’s grade. Any senior who maintains an A average in the course (A- in a weight 5 or 6 course) may, with teacher approval, be exempt from the final exam in the course. Absence from a scheduled exam is permitted only due to serious illness verified by a doctor’s note, death in the immediate family or with administrative approval in which case make-ups are approved by the Administration. All other failures to take scheduled mid-term or final exams will result in a comment on the transcript that the student refused to take the exam. In order for a student to take exams, all tuition payments and school obligations must be up to date.

Report cards are issued quarterly. Grades will be posted on EdLine every two weeks. Parents will receive log-in credentials early in the academic year. Progress reports will be mailed to parents as necessary when decided upon by the teacher. Please see the ‘Athletic Program’ section of this handbook for academic eligibility guidelines for athletics and all extracurricular activities.

Summer School

In order to be promoted to the next grade level, any failure must be remediated in an approved summer program. TCHS students may not substitute one course for another; they may register only for the particular course(s) failed during the year. If a student fails three (3) or more courses for the year, his/her return to TCHS for the next school year will be at the discretion of the Administration.

Grading System

Following is the marking system in use at Trinity Catholic High School MARK A AB+ B BC+ C CD F

EQUIVALENTS 93-100 90-92 87-89 83-86 80-82 77-79 73-76 70-72 65-69 Below 65

Academic Honors

There are three categories of honors. Honors with Distinction for each marking period will be attained by those students whose grade point average is 3.90 or above. High Honors requires an average of 3.50 with no grade below a B. Honors requires an average of 3.33 with no grade below a B-. A weighing procedure is used in obtaining class rank. For Advanced Placement courses the grade point equivalent is multiplied by the factor 6; for Honors courses by 5; for College 1 courses by 4; and for College 2 courses by 3. The sum total of weighted points determines class rank. The weighing of marks for class rank is designed to recognize the adaptations made in subject content and methods of teaching for different levels of aptitude and degrees of ability.

Missed Work

Responsibility for making up work missed due to legitimate absence rests with the student. Where there has been a short-term absence, work should be completed within one (1) day. Where there has been an absence of more than one (1) week the student should consult with the Administration. The school does not ordinarily give permission for a student’s absence except in the case of illness or extreme emergency. Students who are absent with the permission of their parent, but without the permission or approval of the school, may not be entitled to make up quizzes or tests missed during the absence. Students may not make up work when the student causes the work to be missed (e.g. “cutting” class). In such instances, the student receives a grade “0” for that class. Any report card mark of Incomplete (“I”) must be remedied within two weeks of the end of the quarter in which the “I” was received.

Standard Work Procedures

In attempting to instill good work habits, the following standards are to be met by all students. Additional expectations will be distributed by each teacher at the beginning of the year. - In all major courses, one-half hour of homework will be expected daily. Assignments are posted on the school website (www.trinitycatholic.org) - Assignments must be handed in on time. - Students must follow individual teacher class requirements as distributed on the first day of class.

Some examples of cheating include homework copied from another student, research paper turned in with spurious documentation, copying during a test or exam whether from prepared material or from another student’s paper. Cheating in any form is considered a serious offense. It can have harmful effects far beyond the confines of the school.

National Honor Society

The purpose of the Sedes Sapientiae Chapter is to recognize students who have demonstrated outstanding ability in the four qualities upheld by the Society: Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. In the fall, juniors and seniors who have fulfilled these qualifications are inducted during a traditional ceremony. Membership in N.H.S. continues as long as the student proves himself/herself eligible . I. LEADERSHIP IN ACTIVITES AND THE CLASSROOM A. Demonstrates the kind of properly motivated leadership that should reasonably be expected of a high school student. B. Recognizes a need and takes the initiative to act on that need. C. Holds elective school office or positions of responsibility and actively and successfully performs the duties of that office or position. D. Contributes ideas, which improve the life of the school and exerts the type of leadership, which influences others for good.

II. SERVICE TO SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY A. Shows a willingness to give service to school, home and community. B. Shows a willingness to represent the school in inter-scholastic or inter-class competition. C. Shows a willingness to help the faculty and administration by being of assistance to visitors, school personnel and fellow students. D. Shows a willingness to do committee or staff work when asked. Sportsmanship

Good sportsmanship demands that we be good losers as well as graceful winners and that we learn and accept gracefully the results of honest rivalry. Visiting teams should always be made to feel welcome at Trinity Catholic High School. Students are responsible for their behavior at athletic events at home or away games. Booing or jeering officials or members of the opposing team is out of order. A student’s behavior is a reflection of themselves, their family and Trinity Catholic High School.

Tuition

Report Cards will not be released unless tuition payments are up-to-date nor will the student be allowed to take mid-term or final exams. No student may graduate and records will not be sent to any school unless tuition payments are complete.

Visitors

Visitors must sign in at the Main Office and receive a visitor’s badge. No student visitor is allowed in the school without permission from the Administration.

ATTENDANCE INFORMATION Absences from School

Students are excused from school for personal illness, illness or death in the family, for medical treatment or as approved by Administration. Skip days are neither sanctioned nor allowed at Trinity Catholic High School. Students will not receive credit for work missed due to unexcused absences.

Statement of Attendance

The learning experiences that take place in the classroom environment are considered to be a meaningful and essential part of its education structure. Time lost from class is intrinsically irretrievable, in terms of opportunity for interaction and exchange of ideas between students, students and teachers, teachers and students. Therefore, classroom attendance is considered to be an integral part of the student’s course of study. Regular attendance and punctuality are required of all students at Trinity Catholic. All scheduled classes – including study halls, lunch, homeroom, and assemblies – must be attended.

Attendance Policy

Trinity Catholic High School believes strongly that excellent attendance is the foundation upon which an outstanding education and strong academic achievement are built. Thus, the school stands by an attendance policy which mandates excellent attendance and promptness while at the same time allows for extraordinary circumstances that might lead to excessive absences.

This policy has not been adopted for punitive reasons. It has been adopted to raise the bar on student attendance, set a clear and understandable standard for students, to mirror the requirements of the workplace, and to raise academic achievement. Students are expected to attend class regularly. If a student is absent six (6) days in a quarter - three (3) tardies equals one (1) absence - the student shall receive a maximum grade of 59 (F) for that quarter. The school recognizes there are legitimate reasons for a student to be absent. The school also realizes that a student may reach six (6) absences through no fault of their own. Accordingly, the following types of absences are exempt from the total number of absences: - Long Term Illness: four (4) consecutive days or more accompanied by a doctor’s note. - School Related Absences: pull out for administrative reasons, school testing, school obligation. - Extraordinary Circumstances: serious and unavoidable personal or family situations (i.e., death in family) which prohibit a student from attending school require approval by the Administration. - Any Long Term Medical Leave must be verified by a Doctor’s note within 48 hours of the absence. Additionally, The attendance policy should not be interpreted as students having six (6) allowable absences for each quarter. If a student misses a particular class more than 20 times in a year, or ten (10) times for a semester course or five (5) times for a quarter course, credit may not be granted for that particular course. An absence shall be counted when a student misses more than half of one class. If a lengthy absence due to illness is anticipated, a special program (Homebound) is provided by local school districts. To be eligible, a student must first be absent ten (10) consecutive school days. The Guidance Department should be contacted for additional information. Please note that from the day a student is officially placed on Homebound until the day Homebound ends, the student is not recorded as absent from school. Days absent before and/or after Homebound are recorded as absent. Whenever a student is absent from school, upon return he/she must make up all classes, assignments, tests, quizzes and projects. Any student who is in school for less than four (4) hours will not be allowed to participate in, or attend, any athletic/extra-curricular activity or any school function for that day without prior Administrative approval. Excessive early dismissals will not be allowed.

Procedure to Follow in Reporting Absence from School Parent/Guardian must telephone the school prior to 8:15 a.m.

29 Day 4 Catholic Schools Week Winter Vacation Parents/Guardians: Please phone school (203-322-3401) by 8:30am on the day an absence occurs

Leave of Absence

Should extended absences from school become necessary due to an unforeseeable family problem, a request for an extended absence should be directed to the Principal in writing. Leave of absences for family trips/vacations will not be granted and will be counted as unexcused absences.

School Tardiness

Tardiness is disruptive to the educational environment. Any student who is not in school by the 7:45 a.m. bell must report to the Main Office for a late pass. A student will not be admitted to homeroom/class without a late pass. Parents are asked to call the Main Office to report lateness. The call does not eliminate the penalty of detention nor does it excuse the tardiness. In addition to academic consequences per the Attendance Policy, students will receive school detention for excessive tardiness.

Class Tardiness

When a student is late for class a teacher detention may be assigned. The Main Office will not issue an admissions pass to students who are late for class.

Early Dismissal

The school discourages early dismissals. Most after-school activities should be arranged for after school hours. Exceptions to this rule are only for emergencies and with the permission of the Administration. Requests for early dismissal must be in writing, signed by a parent, stating both the reason and the time for the dismissal. The request must be brought to the Main Office before homeroom. If the request is approved, the student will be given a dismissal slip.

Study Halls

Juniors and seniors will be dismissed from school when their study hall occurs during the last period of the school day. This privilege may be revoked for attendance, behavior and academic reasons.

STUDENT GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES One of the essential purposes of a Trinity Catholic education is the formation of character. The directives of the school designed for this purpose are in the interest of good order, and are exercised with discretion and justice. Rules are established also to help provide an atmosphere which will expose our students to the best possible set of learning experiences and promote a school in which we can take pride. The school aims to secure an orderly and energetic pursuit of studies and to develop and strengthen character. The students' attendance at Trinity Catholic High School indicates his/her willingness to comply with the directives of the school. Any deportment that endangers the aims of the school or violates directives will be met by firm discipline, always recognizing the dignity of the young man or young woman.

Campus Security

All students and parents are advised that the campus is open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. Students are to be picked up no later than 4:00 p.m. If there is a good reason for students to remain until 4:00 p.m., there is a late bus available. If a student is at school and wishes to take the late bus, he/she must report to the front lobby. Most times, weather permitting, students will be asked to wait outside in front of the school. The school doors will be locked at 4:00 p.m. daily when our offices are closed for the day. No student should be in the building after 4:00 p.m. unless they are involved in a school-supervised activity.

The Drew Schemera Fitness Center

The Drew Schemera Fitness Center will remain open for students only if there is adult supervision present. There is to be no loitering in or around the Fitness Center. Students who abuse the privilege of working out in the Fitness Center will forfeit this privilege for the remainder of the school year.

Possession/Use of Illegal Substances

Illegal substances are forbidden. Possession, use, sale, distribution or attempted sale of alcohol or drugs, whether legal or illegal, at any time by any student on the school campus, on school buses or at any school function, whether on or off campus, are major offenses. The school reserves the right to report suspected involvement with illegal substances to the local police authorities. In addition, the following sanctions will be imposed: DRUG SALE ON OR OFF CAMPUS: Expulsion and criminal charges DRUG USE/ POSSESSION: Suspension or expulsion ALCOHOL USE AND/OR POSSESSION: Three (3) days suspension TOBACCO - IN ANY FORM: One day suspension. Multiple offenses may lead to further discipline. In addition to school discipline consequences, drug and or alcohol possession will result in suspension (non-participation) from school activities (including sports, clubs, dances, field trips, graduation) for a minimum of ten (10) school days.

These policies are implemented for the safety, security and health of all persons at Trinity Catholic High School.

Student Conduct

A student who engages in any type of conduct which results in a serious disciplinary infraction or which causes disruption or obstruction of a function, process or activity will be subject to suspension, probation or expulsion. Students who are sent from class because of insubordination, disrespect, etc., must report to the Main Office. Failure to report is considered a serious breach of school rules and suspension may result. Serious behavior/discipline issues which result in a student being asked to leave a class will result in disciplinary consequences ranging from detention to suspension. Although the school does not hold itself responsible for the offenses committed outside of its jurisdiction, conduct which is detrimental to the reputation of the institution, that hinders the advancement of the moral good of other students or if it affects the climate of the school is sufficient cause for suspension or expulsion. The school reserves the right to terminate at any time any student’s affiliation with the school, if, in its judgment, a student’s record is unsatisfactory in studies or discipline according to the established norms of the school. The school will take disciplinary action against any student whose conduct it judges to be unacceptable. The list of regulations is not intended to be all-inclusive.

Harassment/Bullying/Hazing/Initiation

Harassment/bullying will not be tolerated in this school. This includes verbal, physical or written behavior, electronic or otherwise. A student may first inform the offender that the behavior is not acceptable. Students should also report the incident to Administration or the Guidance Department. Examples of harassment/ bullying are: sexual harassment, racially motivated behavior, threats of harm, etc.

School Detention

School detention will be assigned to students by the Administration for infractions of school rules. This detention is held from 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., or at a time to be determined by Administration. The school uniform is required dress at detention. - School detention must be served on the assigned date. - School detention takes priority over other school activities. - Failure to follow detention procedures is a serious breach of conduct. - A student who skips a detention will receive a second detention for the first offense and may be suspended for further offenses. - Students who have questions regarding the detention must report to the Dean of Students.

Teacher Detention

Teacher detention will be held each afternoon in a room designated by the individual teacher. A teacher detention can be transferred to another day at the teacher’s discretion. Students should follow the same procedures stated under school detention except that the transfer permission will be granted by the teacher who assigned the detention. A student who fails to attend teacher detention will serve an additional school detention. - The student must not ignore school or teacher detention. - Multiple violations of school rules, regulations or procedures may lead to suspension, probation or expulsion.

Suspension

An in-school or out-of-school suspension may also result in a student’s removal from the school’s total program. Suspension may lead to probation or expulsion. Offenses such as insubordination, harassment, smoking, stealing, gambling, serious altercation or fighting, obscenity, truancy, leaving the grounds without permission, vandalism, threats, misbehavior and/or smoking on buses, or conduct harmful to the reputation of the school or student body, use of and/or possession of drugs and/or alcohol may result in suspension. This list is not intended to be all-inclusive. In every instance of suspension, a student must meet with their Guidance Counselor. Please note: - Students may be suspended or expelled for repeated violations of school policy. - Students who incur suspension will be re-admitted to school and/or class only after a conference is held with the Administration. - Students under suspension may not participate in, or attend, any school activity. This includes on-and-off campus athletic and non-athletic events. During this suspension period, it is the students responsibility to arrange with their teacher to make up all work missed during their suspension in a timely fashion.

Probation

A student may be placed on probation for behavioral or academic issues. The probationary period will set forth specific conditions or requirements to be met over a prescribed length of time. Failure to comply with the probationary conditions may result in suspension or expulsion.

Conduct While on Buses

The student’s conduct on the school buses must be above reproach for the safe operation of the vehicle. Misconduct will result in disciplinary actions determined by Administration.

Weapons

Any student who brings firearms or any weapon (as defined by state statute) on school buses, to the school campus or to any school function is subject to immediate dismissal and/or expulsion whether on or off campus. Incidents of firearm possession or anything that can be construed as a weapon possession will be referred to the local police authorities and the student will face expulsion. In addition, laser flashlights are not permitted. Any student who is in possession of a laser flashlight may be suspended.

Terrorism

Any student who makes a terroristic threat towards the school, a teacher, a staff member, or another student (example - crank calls, bomb threats, electronic messages, fireworks, pulling of fire alarm), or possession of terroristic materials (bomb making materials, etc.) is subject to immediate dismissal and may be referred to the local police authorities.

Protection of School Property

Students are expected to be mindful of the care and protection of all school property. Damages resulting from the destruction or defacement of school property, whether willful or accidental, are to be compensated for by the students responsible. In addition, the student guilty of malicious damage will be subject to disciplinary action including detention, suspension or expulsion.

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING

ATHLETIC PROGRAM – CRUSADERS

The Guidance Department is available to help students develop a sense of personal responsibility and to aid them in the process of making decisions so that they may enrich their lives and attain maximum potential whether it be in further education or immediate entry into the world of work.

The interscholastic program at Trinity Catholic is one that has a very rich and rooted tradition. Competing in the prestigious Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference, the largest high school sports league in New England, has allowed Trinity Catholic to gain statewide notoriety for its many fine teams.

Services:

Boys and girls have a wide range of sports in which to participate. Girls can choose to join either the cheerleading, cross country, soccer, or volleyball teams in the Fall; basketball and cheerleading in the Winter; and softball, golf or tennis in the Spring. Some of the girls’ teams have both a varsity and junior varsity program. The boys also have a wide range of sports in which they can participate. The Fall program offers a choice of either cross country, football or soccer. In the Winter season boys can choose basketball or ice hockey. Baseball, golf, lacrosse and tennis are offered in the Spring. Many of the boys sports are offered in three levels – freshmen, junior varsity and varsity.

Counseling: Testing: Information: Miscellaneous:

Academic, Vocational/Career, Personal/Social, (Group and Individual) (Standardized) Administration, Interpretation, Colleges, Careers, College Scholarships and Financial Aid, Summer Programs, Enrichment Programs Parent/Teacher Conferences, Parent/Student Conferences, Processing of College Applications, Service to Graduates, College Transfer, Job Placement Applications

The functions of the Guidance Department fall into broad categories. The department is involved in a multitude of areas from freshmen and new student orientation to college and career planning. In the early fall each freshman is placed into an orientation group. This helps to familiarize the students with the school and establishes a line of communication in times of need. Throughout the year counselors monitor the academic progress of students. Special needs are identified and attention given to those having academic difficulties. In October, sophomores and juniors take the Preliminary Scholastic Test (PSAT). Students are given practice materials to familiarize themselves with these tests beforehand. In addition, in April, the ACT will be administered to juniors. During sophomore year, students are encouraged to explore career options and complete a career interest inventory. During junior and senior years, students are given regular reminders as to the steps they need to take to make plans for their future. In the second semester, juniors meet individually with their Guidance Counselor to discuss post-high school plans to establish realistic goals and to conduct a college search on the computer to establish a final college list. A Junior Parent College Information Night is held in the spring. In the fall, students have the opportunity to meet with college representatives during their scheduled visits to Trinity. Each senior meets individually with his/her counselor to review college plans. College recommendations are written, financial aid forms distributed and individual student/ parent/counselor meetings are conducted. Trinity Catholic serves as a test center for the College Boards Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT I and II) during May. Our CEEB Code is 070752.

TCHS has a winning tradition in boys and girls sports. The Crusaders have won State Championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, hockey, softball, tennis, track and volleyball. They have also won League and City Championships in baseball, basketball, football, hockey, softball and volleyball. Many athletes have been honored on the league and state levels. Many have gone on to play on the collegiate level, often on athletic scholarships. A few have been gifted enough to play sports on a professional level. Certainly, the success of Trinity Catholic’s athletic program can be directly attributed to the quality of athletes who have attended the school, but a large part of the success has been due to the outstanding coaching staff that Trinity Catholic High School employs. Any student who plays a sport is coached by a dedicated professional who cares not only about winning but also about the student as an individual. Trinity Catholic High School encourages students to participate in its sports program. High school sports is a great place to learn about the values of competitiveness, honesty, integrity, teamwork, and most important, how to deal with success and failure. It is a great training ground for what a student will face when their school days are over.

Policy Regarding Allowing for Mass Attendance

Students in Catholic schools in the Diocese of Bridgeport are expected to attend Mass in the Roman Catholic Rite on all Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. It is the responsibility of all school administrators, moderators and coaches to provide the opportunity and to attend Mass with all the students from the school who are participating in the sport. No student should be expected to pay an additional cost to attend Mass. While this primarily applies to overnight trips, schools are to make every effort to see that students traveling on a Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation know that it is their obligation to attend a vigil Mass on the prior evening.

In addition, athletic programs in the Catholic schools of the Diocese of Bridgeport must be designed so that no games or practices occur before 12:00 noon on Sundays. School Administrators, Athletic Directors and Coaches are expected to emphasize the importance of our student athletes to attend Mass on Sundays. If a practice or game is scheduled for a Holyday of Obligation, it is essential that provision be made for the athletes to attend Mass. Under no circumstances may practices or athletic games be held on Good Friday.

Eligibility Rules for Athletics and All Extra-Curricular Activities

Eligibility requirements at TCHS are more stringent than the minimum required by the CIAC. Those participating in interscholastic athletics and extracurricular activities at TCHS must not fail more than one class. More than one failure for a quarter will render the student ineligible until the next report card is in hand or ten (10) days from the close of the marketing period, whichever comes first. Eligibility for the first marking period is determined by the student's previous end-ofyear grade report. More than one failure on that report for the entire year makes the student ineligible for a team for the following school year unless the course is retaken and passed in the summer.

Inter-Scholastic Team Practices at Off-School Locations

Some of the athletic teams practice at fields or facilities that are not on school grounds. Because it is cost prohibitive to provide transportation to these sites, it is the responsibility of the parents to provide transportation. These facilities include Terry Conners Ice Rink for hockey; Scalzi Park for tennis; Sterling Farms or E. Gaynor Brennan for golf; Rippowam for baseball, lacrosse, soccer and football; Barrett Field @ Belltown Park for baseball and any other site within Stamford that might be made available to our athletic teams. Note: The above mentioned rules are the minimum and by no means inclusive. We reserve the right to add or modify these rules.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS/CRISIS RESPONSE/WEATHER RELATED CLOSINGS Trinity Catholic High School, in cooperation with the Division of Emergency Management of the City of Stamford, has developed and tested its emergency response plans to ensure each child’s safety while in school, including a parent communication plan and evacuation plan. Contingency plans for unexpected dismissals or other emergency conditions should be arranged by parents and discussed with students in advance. In the event of an unexpected dismissal or school-wide emergency, parents are requested to refrain from calling the school or contacting students on their cell phones so as not to interfere with emergency communications. Parents/Guardians are requested to keep the school office advised of any changes in phone numbers/emails and emergency contact information as these changes occur in case it is necessary for the school to make contact with parents in an emergency.

Weather Related Closings

The decision to close school is made by the Superintendent of Public Schools and is based on information received from the Police Department, the Department of Public Works, Buildings and Grounds Department, the Bus Company, Transportation Office, and weather forecasts. When it is necessary to close school due to inclement weather, the announcement will be made over the following radio stations as early in the morning as possible (usually at 6:00 a.m.): WSHU, WNLK, WFAS, WGCH or watch and listen to NBC30, Channel 12 Cablevision, Channel 3-WFSB, or Channel 8-WTNH. TCHS is automatically closed when Stamford Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather. In addition, we issue a school-wide e-mail notice and an Emergency Notification System is in place. As inclement weather approaches, information regarding ‘snow day’ assignments will be forthcoming.

Delays

During the year there may be times when reports indicate that the weather will clear and traffic conditions will improve in a short period of time. Based on these reports, the Superintendent will delay the opening of schools for two (2) hours. Students should be at their bus stops two (2) hours later than usual.

Dismissals

In case of emergency early dismissal, all students who drive and their siblings will be dismissed ½ hour before the remainder of the student body is dismissed. If school is dismissed early, all school activities for the remainder of the day, including practices and games, will be cancelled.

OTHER EMERGENCY SITUATIONS Lockdown: An emergency may prevent the safe evacuation of a school building and require steps to isolate students and faculty from danger by enforcing a school lockdown. In the event of a lockdown, students are kept in designated locations that are away from the danger. Faculty members are responsible for accounting for students and ensuring that no one leaves the safe area. School personnel will also secure building entrances, ensuring that no unauthorized individuals leave or enter the building. Shelter-in-Place:

Shelter-in-place is used to protect the school occupants from external threats such as tornado, some chemical fumes and other natural and man-made threats.

Fire/Evacuation:

If smoke, fire, or explosion occurs or if there is a need to evacuate a classroom or area, school officials will follow R.A.C.E. (Rescue, Alarm, Contain, Evacuate) and the procedure determined by the Fire Department .

Crisis Intervention:

If a tragedy, such as a loss of life or other devastating event affects the school community, crisis intervention services are available. Crisis response teams consisting of administrators, faculty, staff members and additional support staff made available through the Diocese of Bridgeport and the City of Stamford, offer the support needed within the school..
