PBL: BE RESPECTFUL - Socially Acceptable Behaviour

Welcome to week 8 of 11 in term 1 at Casino High School and what a busy term it has been so far. Students have had to meet the academic demands of the curriculum and the involvement in many sporting, cultural and academic activities. Year 12 have had the extra stress of their half yearly exam and are now receiving their results and awaiting reports. I would like to thank the respected local community members who gave up their time to share their life and present career experiences with our Aboriginal Year 10 and 11 students as part of the Future Tracks Program. Congratulations again to William Fraser who after winning in the Lions Club Public Speaking Competition at Casino, repeated the performance at the Zone F i n al at Alstonville. He gave a very polished performance and was successful in winning at this level. Now William will represent the Zone at Tweed Heads on Saturday. This is a very impressive result, given That this competition is prestigious and all high schools, both private and public compete in it. I would also like to thank the organiser, Miss Evenden, of the McGrath Foundation Pink Stumps Day for Casino High School and all those who participated in raising over $1,100. It was great to see a ‘bit of fun’ happening and I was disappointed in not being able to bat and bowl in the lunchtime cricket match and turn the game around for the staff.

From the Deputy - Ms Grieves Year 12 students have completed their half yearly examinations and they have received their results. This is the time they need to focus on what they have learned from their exams and ensure they continue to review all that they have learned. The Year 12 students need to continue to use their time in the Senior Learning Centre effectively. This is an extremely valuable resource that is staffed by Mrs Veronica Parker who is committed to ensuring that students utilise their study periods to the utmost to reduce the amount of work they need to do at home. However, it is essential that students do work at home. They will need the ongoing support and encouragement from families as they traverse the roller coaster of emotions associated with their HSC year. Year 11 students are deep in the throws of their Preliminary work. Most students would have Assessment Tasks due this week or in the weeks leading up to the holidays. They need to complete these Assessment Tasks by the due date. Year 10 students will begin the Subject Selection Process for Year 11at the beginning of next term. This is an important milestone for those students as they transition from the ‘junior’ to the senior school. More information will be sent home as the time draws near for this process to begin. Year 7 students received their Interim Reports at an Assembly today. This Assembly is also the time that the Year 7 SRC Representatives were inducted. Congratulations to Olivia Armstrong, Brianna Brown, Cameron Davis, Candace Dennis, Angela Gawiran, Amy Randall, Bonnie Richter and Kahlan Spatty who are the Year 7 representatives.

Mr Lovejoy was run out for only 2 runs, much to the delight of Year 12. Mrs Gooley was the Staff’s second best batter contributing 8 runs and Miss Godden, Mr Kemister and Mr George added to the total of 51 runs for the Staff’s 7 overs. Year 12 got off to a great start through Riley Taylor. He was hitting the ball sweetly and managed quite a few boundaries. He retired on 28 runs. Kelly Gelzinnis only managed to get one run after being run out early on. John Acosta hit one ball well over the boundary line for a big 6 but could only manage to add one more run to his total after being bowled spectacularly from Miss Binge. Mat Vrckoff placed his shots very well and added a quick-fired 17 with most of his runs being attained through either 4’s or 6’s. Brendan Parker was let loose and he scored 18 runs off 3 balls after hitting three 6’s. He retired gracefully to allow his fellow students to bat. Josh Fuller however couldn’t manage to add any runs to the students’ total getting dismissed for a duck after being caught by Mr Bell. By this stage Year 12 had already won the match after surpassing Staff’s total after the first four overs. Moeisha Caldwell added to the Staff’s wounds by hitting four 4’s in her total runs of 20 before she retired. Zac Gray, Wayne Gordon and Abby Brooker added to Year 12’s total to bring their score to 96 runs. A very convincing and deserving win to Year 12 who really showed the Staff how you should bat in such a short overs game. Congratulations and well done to Year 12. You will be very hard to defeat this year. Thank you to Mitchell Pitman for umpiring the game.

Also thank you to Year 12 and the Staff that participated in the match in warm conditions. So Year 12 take out the first sporting challenge in 2016. We all look forward to the future games ahead.

The School’s Cross Country will be held in the last week of the term on Tuesday 5th April at Evans Head. Students need to ensure they return their notes and money as soon as possible. This is an enjoyable and worthwhile school event and I encourage all students to attend.

PINK STUMPS DAY STAFF VS YEAR 12 7/7 CRICKET Year 12 took on Staff in a game of 7/7 Cricket this week. This match was held in conjunction with the school holding a Pink Stumps Day to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation. Staff were low on numbers so they elected to bat first. The Staff got off to a very slow start only scoring two runs in the first over thanks to some excellent bowling from Mat Vrckoff. It didn’t take long but Mr Bell began to find his groove and put away a few 4’s and 6’s. Mr Bell retired on 35 runs.

PINK STUMPS DAY A big thank you to the school community who rallied and got behind our Pink Stumps Day this week in raising funds for the McGrath Foundation. Students and Staff dressed up in pink for the day and donated so generously. Thank you to the SRC who provided a sausage sizzle during lunch. We had a target of $650 and we exceeded this in raising funds over $1,100. All these funds go directly to the McGrath Foundation to ensure every family experiencing breast cancer in Australia has access to a breast care nurse, no matter where they live or their financial situation. We surpassed our total in 2015 and that is all down to everyone who got involved and supported such a wonderful cause. It was so great to see everyone dressed up in pink and having a fun day. PDHPE NEWS Year 10 PASS Excursion-Thunderbird Park/ Aqua Splash By Ruby Morris and Tim Myers On Thursday and Friday of last week (10th and 11th March), 37 students from Year 10 Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) elective attended an excursion to Mt Tamborine and Southport to participate in a variety of physically challenging activities. After an interesting bus trip, we arrived at Thunderbird Park, Mt Tamborine and quickly headed for the ‘Tree Tops Challenge” High Ropes Course. After a quick safety briefing, many students excitedly started the challenge, while others were tackling one of their biggest fears; heights. All students displayed outstanding teamwork skills throughout this challenge, demonstrating positive encouragement towards all of their peers. The Tree Tops Challenge was also very physically demanding, with many students demonstrating amazing upper body strength. Every student had a strong sense of accomplishment and enhanced their self-confidence after completing this course and was the highlight of the trip for most of them. Students then went for a 5km round trip walk through a tranquil rainforest to a beautiful waterfall. Everyone had a quick swim in the very chilly waterhole, then headed back to our accommodation for the night. On the Friday we packed up camp and headed down to Southport to attempt the Aqua Splash water obstacle course. During this challenge, students were tested physically, as they utilised their balance and climbing skills in order to make it through the challenges. Once again the teamwork demonstrated with students helping one another through each section was fantastic. Congratulations Year 10 for the amazing effort and making it through the two demanding but rewarding days! What the students had to say… “I loved how physically exhausting the challenges were” “I loved getting away from social media and talking to more people” “I liked spending quality time with peers” “I enjoyed getting over my fear of heights”

PDHPE NEWS Resistance Training for Teens Casino High School has been invited to participate in a research project conducted by Newcastle University. Our Year 9 PASS Elective classes of up to 58 students will be participating in the program as part of their studies of the human body, health and fitness programs. The primary aim of the study is to implement the health and fitness intervention and examine its effects on secondary school students’ fitness, health and wellbeing. The program involves students completing a short survey before and after participating in a 10 week fitness program scheduled for next term. Students will be instructed in resistance training methods and techniques once a week in class with their teacher and have access through their phone or computer to supporting technology through the use of a specially developed App, which will deliver personalised health and fitness information and motivation to achieve fitness goals. It will be just like having a personal trainer in your pocket! Additionally, having access to the school gym at lunchtimes to complete brief 7-minute student facilitated high intensity workouts will support students to improve their fitness targets. Current physical activity guidelines recommend adolescence regularly engage in both aerobic and muscle strengthening physical activities. As a result, Stage 4 & 5 Fitness & Cross Country programs in PE classes will operate a variety of interesting and challenging fitness classes to include ‘boxercise’, resistance bands, circuits and group challenge events. That’s right kiddies…exercise is fun, so get ready to move that body and take steps to improve your total wellbeing!

SCIENCE NEWS What is Science? There are lots of ways to define Science, the following is one method. Inductive inferences start with observations of something and arrive at general conclusions. For example, if a car goes over a bump and the engine misfires, and then goes over another bump and the engine misfires, and then goes over another bump and the engine misfires, and then goes over a long smooth stretch of road and there is no misfiring, and then goes over a fourth bump and the engine misfires again, one can logically conclude that the misfiring is caused by the bumps. Deductive inferences do the reverse. They start with general knowledge and predict a specific observation. For example, if, from reading the hierarchy of facts about the machine, the mechanic knows the horn of the cycle is powered exclusively by electricity from the battery, then he can logically infer that if the battery is dead the horn will not work. That is deduction. Solution of problems too complicated for common sense to solve is achieved by long strings of mixed inductive and deductive inferences. An untrained observer will see only physical labour and often get the idea that physical labour is mainly what a mechanic does. Actually the physical labour is the smallest and easiest part of what a mechanic does. By far the greatest part of his work is careful observation and precise thinking. That is why mechanics sometimes seem so taciturn and withdrawn when performing tests. They don't like it when you talk to them because they are concentrating on mental images, hierarchies, and not really looking at you or the physical motorcycle at all. They are using the experiment as part of a program to expand their hierarchy of knowledge of the faulty car and compare it to the correct hierarchy in their mind. We surveyed a select group of year 10 students and asked them:What is the best thing about Science at Casino High School, some answers were:  It is interesting  The air conditioning  Learning how things work  Cutting up hearts, eyes and brains  The writing and theory  The practical work  Learning about the world around us

What is the worst thing about Science at Casino High School, some answers were:  I can’t use my phone  Not doing practical work What is the best thing that Science has given the world, some answers were:  Knowledge about the Universe  Electricity  Medicines and medical equipment  Panadol

What is the worst thing that Science has given the world, some answers were:  Pollution from coal fired power stations  Nuclear bombs

Agriculture STEGGLES MEAT BIRD PAIRS COMPETITION This year Casino High School has entered the Steggles Meat Bird pair’s competition run through the Sydney Royal Easter Show Poultry Program. The students have been calculating how much feed they have been eating and watching them put on weight every week. Our largest bird at the moment is just over 1 kilo!!! The students will pick 2 similar size male birds and 2 similar size female birds to send to the Sydney show. The students have to choose the birds that they think will have a similar carcase as this shows how the commercial broiler industry chooses their birds. Our Hyline Brown layers will also be entering into the show again this year with the emphasis being on the commercial laying industry.

Show team Any Year 7 students interested in joining the show team after Beef Week in term 2 should come and see Mrs Wenham in the science staff room to put their names down on the list. We will be making the decision based on a cooperative attitude and engagement in class and around the school. Mrs Wenham

English Faculty Awards Congratulations to; Calem McGregor, Seth Hill, Samual Eather, Sara Cole, Poppi Hadley, Jayden Marsh, Rozalie Franks, Lilly Petty, Lateah Lambeth, Isabella Ennever and Kahlan Spatty for consistent effort, handing in work on time and engagement in class.

SCIENCE NEWS Models in Science In Science we use models to help students understand scientific ideas or concepts better. Models can be used to make predictions to design further experiments.

Extracting copper element by modelling smelting

Designing model solar ovens to learn about light

A model of DNA to help visualise the structure

It is important that students participate wholly during all investigations, as this is an excellent opportunity to practice their understanding, use creativity, and to really engage with scientific concepts on a deeper level. Just a few examples of experiments used to model ideas in science. Modelling the igneous rock pumice by making honey comb.

Sport Sport Sport………. AFL Queensland Schools Cup: Byron Bay By Tim Myers Casino High School nominated 2 teams to compete in the AFL Queensland Schools Cup on Wednesday 9th March; a Senior Male and Senior Female team. Other participating schools included Xavier College, Trinity Catholic College, Mt. St. Patricks College, Lindisfarne College and Byron Bay High School. Our male team faced Mt St. Patricks College first up. Our boys were a little slow to start with, letting the opposition get away with a quick lead. Casino High School had a much more successful 2nd half, however were narrowly defeated 23-25. Byron Bay High School was our next challenge. They have a reputation as being a strong team and with a professional AFL player as their coach; it was going to be a tough match. Casino High School was finally defeated by a team who proved most accurate in front of the goals. Our third and final game was against Lindisfarne College. Casino High School were on top of their game now, and started off very strong, with 2 quick goals early in the first half. Due to time constraints, this game was cut short; however, we remained a few goals ahead when the final siren sounded. Well done to all students who played on the day. Everyone showed a high level of respect towards other players, umpires and officials. All were great representatives of Casino High School and did our school proud. By Jessica Collison - Year 10 On Wednesday the 9th March we took a Senior Girls AFL team to Byron Bay to play in the Queensland State Cup. The girls played 3 games starting off a little scratchy losing our first game against Xavier College 6-4. We then played Trinity Catholic College defeating them 24-4 and finished off with a brilliant game against Mt. St. Patricks College defeating them 27-0. All of the 16 girls (Emma Gordon, Shania Townsend, Zoe Williams, Naomi Robinson, Juliara O'Donghue, Stella Allen, Darcee Telfer, Japirra Torrens, Samantha Taylor, Molly Richardson, Jessica Collison, Maddi Langbein, Talarra Berry, Isabella Carey, Samantha Adam-Armfield & Shanae Slade) played very well. We had some girls that stood out, Zoe holding up the centres and tackling great, Naomi defending the ball from goals and Juliara and Darcee competing in every ruck. All the girls played well and thoroughly enjoyed their day and the AFL experience.

U15’S Boys AFL Selections!! Matt Bradshaw and Luke Judson travelled to Coffs Harbour last week to compete at the North Coast Trials for U15’s Boys AFL. Congratulations to both boys as they have now made the North Coast Team and will travel to Newcastle early next term. Well done boys!

Sport Sport Sport………. CHS Netball Zone Knockout Competition On Monday 14th March, 9 girls from Casino High School represented the school at the Zone Knockout Competition. The girls looked great in the new uniforms and started the competition with a strong win over long-time rivals Maclean High School. The girls won 39 – 19 and showed great strength and determination in very hot weather conditions. The second game was against The Rivers College and the girls were preparing for a tough Casino High School Open Girls Netball Team game. The weather was getting hotter but the girls rose to the occasion, beating The Rivers College 31 – 13. The third game, Zone Final was against Alstonville. The sun was beating down and many of the girls were starting to feel the effects of the heat. Casino High School started the game strongly but unfortunately Alstonville HS were too good for us on the day and we lost 17 – 29. The Zone Trials were also held in conjunction with the Knockout Competition and two of our players were successful in making the Northern Rivers Team. Congratulations to Naomi Robinson and Zoe Williams who made the Northern Rivers Team and will go to Grafton on the 29th March for the North Coast Trials. A big thankyou to the parents that came and supported the girls at the courts and also to Melissa Williams who scored on the day. Miss Bennett - Coach
