with the congregation a mid-year vision of what we wanted to see accomplished during the summer months. And although our attendances were waning in June, July has been a much better month. Our Sunday School hour seems to have made a turn for the better, and I know that many teachers and students are reaching out to those who have yet to choose a class. The numbers speak for themselves. In June we were averaging 294 in SS. July we jumped to 331, an increase of 37. We have the momentum to continue this if we all work hard to do our part in encouraging our people to not only come to class but to bring others with them. On August 17th a new adult SS class began. David Cajiuat is the teacher of this new SS class and is teaching on “Essentials to Godliness.” This class meets in the Choir Room.

One of the goals for the summer, that is well on its way to being met, is the goal to see 15 new members come into our fellowship. Thus far, we have seen fourteen new members. We rejoice in those who have come to be part of Calvary Baptist Church. We begin September with a visit from our missionaries serving in Spain. Randy and Karen Wilkins will be coming through on furlough to report their ministry to us on September 3rd. September 7th has been designated “Friend Day.” Dr. Ron Comfort will be here with us preaching both services that day. Missionary Geber Coelho will be with us in the evening service on Sunday, September 14th. On Wednesday, September 24th we will hear from South America as Jonathan and Sherrie Champlin share with us their report of the work in Suriname. At the end of the month, September 28th, we will

be honored to have a dear saint of God preach in our services. Dr. Ed Nelson, one of America’s oldest (91) and finest preachers, will be here. Please pray for his health that nothing will deter him. He will be a blessing to our church. Please use these days in September to bring the lost with you, and then let’s all pray for a very special outpouring of God’s power on all of us. July concluded our 35th year with this fine fellowship. Much has transpired and God has blessed. There have been some bumps in the road, but it is ministry. To all who have been faithful, I want to say thank you. To all who have prayed for this ministry, including many missionaries and people who we don’t even know about, we send a big thank you.

f you attended Calvary Baptist Church on Sunday, August 3rd, you left the church property singing that hymn or at least thinking about it. The day was special and will be remembered by all who attended. The congregation honored Pastor Greg McLaughlin and his wife, Shari, for their thirty-five years of service to the Lord through their ministry at CBC. The morning began with

the hymn “Great is Thy Faithfulness” and the entire day followed with thanksgiving and praise for what the Lord has done and provided in leading Pastor McLaughlin to dedicate his service and calling from God to be focused on Calvary Baptist Church. The following comments were an insert in the church bulletin. Longtime friend and missionary Roger Crowder

was the guest speaker. Roger and Sharon Crowder (once serving in Brazil and now currently serving as furlough replacement missionaries) have been supported by CBC for over twenty-five years. The pictures that follow can tell the “rest of the story.” The congregation sacrificially gave to make Sunday, August 3, 2014 a very special day for Pastor and Shari.

PASTOR GREG & SHARI MCLAUGHLIN’S 35TH ANNIVERSARY CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH (1979-2014)

n August 5, 1979, Pastor & Shari came to Meadow Hills Baptist Church (located on Blue Spring Road) to begin their new ministry as Senior Pastor. They were twentynine and twenty-six respectively. The McLaughlins had three children at the time they arrived in Huntsville; Joe (5), Rachel (3) and Sonja (2 mo.). Neither Pastor nor Shari had any idea what God had in store for them as they assumed the pulpit and began their new ministry. It was not long after Pastor & Shari’s arrival that the church was in need of relocation. In 1983, Meadow Hills Baptist Church moved to 1800 Sparkman Drive and changed the name to Calvary Baptist Church. Pastor McLaughlin continued to pray for God’s leading in how to grow the church and expand its ministry

outreach. In 1987, Calvary had its first annual Faith Promise Missions Conference during which the Faith Promise giving program was started. Several years later the Lord saw fit to gr o w bo th t he McLaughlin family and Calvary’s ministry. Pastor & Shari had their fourth child, Wesley, in 1992 and the following fall Calvary Baptist Academy began its first academic school year. Pastor has always had a vision of where he thought the church should go and a plan of how to get there, and Calvary is grateful to have had such a man in the pulpit for these past 35 years. Since 1979, the church has been blessed over and over again, not only with sound doctrinal preaching, but also with a pastor’s wife whose contributions to the ministry are invaluable. Shari started as the

church secretary in 1981 and has been faithfully serving for over 30 years in this capacity. She has also been the school secretary since its second year. Shari began and has been the director of the Patch the Pirate Club since its beginning at CBC in 1986. Calvary is so thankful to have a pastor’s wife who exhibits a servant’s heart attitude in everything she does. After 42 years of marriage and nearly the same amount of time in the ministry, God has blessed Pastor & Shari with four children—Joe, Rachel, Sonja & Wesley. The McLaughlin’s also have a daughterin-law, Rebecca, and two sons-in-law, Ryan and Bryan. The Lord has also blessed Pastor & Shari with nine grandchildren— Micah, Noah, Levi, Aiden, Alana, Collin, Caleb, Sophie & Clayton.

MISSION SPOTLIGHT: MARK & DENISE NELSEN (FRANCE)

Mark Nelsen was born in Estherville, Iowa and spent his entire childhood living on an Iowa farm... Testimony of salvation: The Lord blessed me with Christian parents that were deeply concerned with the salvation of their children. This desire allowed me to attend a Bible believing church during my childhood. Our church also had a burden to see the gospel preached to everyone and would frequently hold

revival meetings. At the age of five, I attended one of those meetings and was convicted by God’s Holy Spirit of my lost condition. I had the privilege of praying with my Grandmother and trusting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Call to ministry: In a general sense, the Lord used the years when I worked at a Christian Bible camp to call me into fulltime ministry. During

those summer months, I was able to come into contact with dozens of Christian workers. These encounters allowed me to meet people who found true happiness and joy by serving the Lord as a life calling. During the summer of my 16th year, I made a public decision to follow the Lord into fulltime ministry. This decision led me to attend Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, Iowa. At the end

of my sophomore year of Bible College, I was able to take a month long trip to France. This trip opened my eyes to the incredible spiritual need of France, and God placed a burden on my heart to return to the country of France as a missionary. After this trip I met my future wife, Denise. We both worked in the recruitment department of our school and became good friends. Our “friendship” developed into

QUOTES FROM THE PULPIT Has your faith found a resting place in Jesus? It is the difference between heaven and hell. You can go to church all your life and die and go to hell. Prophecy is God’s history, prerecorded.

We thank Mission Committee member Ben Senior for gathering this information about the Nelsen family.

a more serious relationship. We were married on June 17, 1989. Denise Nelsen was born in Endicott, New York. She grew up in a Pastor’s home and had the privilege of living in a variety of states including New York, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Texas, Colorado, and New Jersey until she married Mark. Testimony of salvation: I grew up in a happy Christian home with loving parents. In the summer of 1973, my cousins were visiting. At one of the evening meals, my older cousin asked me if I was saved. At the age of 7, I had never really realized that I needed to make a personal decision. That night, my mother prayed with me, and I accepted the Lord as my Savior. It wasn’t until I was 16 years old that I told the Lord that I would do whatever he wanted me to do with my life. France ministry: We arrived in France on November 24, 1994. We spent our first two years in language school. In July of 1996, we accepted the call of a struggling mission church in La Rochelle. The church was on the verge of closing and was desperate to find a pastor. With our very limited language skills in hand, we accepted the challenge to work with the p e o p le o f La R o chelle. Over the past 16 years, we have seen our church grow (both spiritually and numerically). In 2008, we called a French pastor, Stéphane Corbel. We have been work-

ing with Stéphane since that time. During our annual business meeting last April, our church officially accepted to start a daughter church in a community about 40 minutes from La Rochelle. While we begin working on the implantation of this new church, we will also continue to work with Stéphane. Family: The Lord has blessed us with three children. Zacharie is 15 years old. A little over a year ago, Zacharie publically stated his desire to be a pastor in France. Currently he is considering attending a French Bible College, but has several years to ponder this decision. Our oldest daughter, Emilie, is 11 years old. She began junior high school this year and has repeatedly told us she wants to be a school teacher in France. Of course, she’s 11, so we will see. Our youngest daughter is Alissa. She is 9 years old and currently has no future plans other than enjoying every day of her life. We thank the Lord that each of our children has trusted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Further, we rejoice that each of our children has displayed outward evidences of their

new life in Christ. Life in France is not easy for a Christian young person. The entire country of France contains no more than 400,000 Bible believing Christians. The average teenage French believer has no Christian fellowship or contact outside of church activities. Our children attend a French junior high. To our knowledge they are the only Christians among a student body of 700. Because of this spiritual reality, we seek to be together as a family whenever possible. With our children we have been able to see and experience incredible things both in France and other countries in Europe. One of our passions is history. We have formed dear friendships with French citizens who lived through the German occupation and rejoiced seeing the American Army of liberation. We have also seen the scenes of great triumph in church history; specifically, the way God used the French Huguenots to evangelize our adopted homeland. We count it a true blessing and privilege to live and serve God in the country of France.

Auditorium Class Several of the Baptist World Mission administrators share the teaching responsibilities for the auditorium class. This provides a lot of variety and freshness. Recent topics have included Minor Prophets, missions philosophy, principles of personal holiness and suicide. The ministry experience of these men definitely adds a pastoral flavor to the lessons. Class members also share prayer requests and have the opportunity to develop closer personal relationships with one another. Body Building Class The Body Builders Class: Building the Body of Christ for the Purpose of Godliness (1 Tim 4:7,8) This class is developed to edify believers to have the freedom to grow in godliness—a natural expression of the character of Christ through our own personalities. This study will draw practical truths and principles in Scripture that apply to a selected array of Biblical disciplines, or “exercises” including: worship, journaling, fasting, Scripture meditation/application, evangelism, serving, and much more. As in bodily exercise, this class will seek to develop our spiritual strength and consistent discipline towards godliness, develop accountability part-

nerships for encouragement, and incorporate group interaction and feedback for better spiritual development. Some activities we'd like to incorporate in this class are a Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt, distributing care packages for families hurting in hospitals during holidays, monthly class fellowships, picnics, and volunteer community work. Each week our class will seek to encourage those who missed class by sending them text messages, emails, phone calls, or personal contact. As class instructor, I hope to see you in the class for our spiritual “workouts” on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in the Choir Room. David Cajiuat Career Class The Career class was developed at Calvary two years ago to meet the unique needs and challenges of single career adults who are aged twenty-five years and older. The class includes members who are engaged in many professions, including education, research and development, and business. The goals for this class include encouraging each student to have a dynamic walk with the Lord that is grounded in solid Bible study and that is saturated with an effective prayer

life; fostering an everincreasing desire to study the Bible; enhancing Bible study skills; and, exploring subjects and topics relevant to the students’ interests. Initially the class was conducted in the teacherlecture format but a couple of months ago my wife and I tried a different format in order to find a more effective means of meeting the needs of the students while at the same time incorporating more input from the students themselves. We then changed the class format to a discussion group setting with students seated in chairs around a very large table, which encourages discussion and gives students a place for their Bibles and study materials. The weekly topics are frequently chosen by students and are announced in advance so that students can prepare for the next week’s discussion. Everyone present contributes each week and the spontaneous discussions that occur are Bible-centered, insightful, instructive, and relevant. There is also time of food and fellowship before class each week. The Lord is richly blessing our class and we are looking forward to the wonderful things that He will do in and through the members of this inspiring class! Rusty Pettit

College Class The College Sunday School class is aimed at high school graduates through twenty-five year olds. While not a requirement to be attending college, this class is tailored to those at this age who are growing and being challenged with issues brought on by increased independence and responsibility. Lessons provide guidance in making spiritual decisions to form and guide a lifestyle pleasing to God and aligned with His will. Recently we’ve explored the issues of managing life, living for God, social networking, trials, time management and even divorce; if marriage is in your plan (and for many college-aged people, it certainly is), you need to understand the biblical perspective on divorce. These lessons and their practical applications are “down to earth and very eye opening” according to one of our faithful attendees. We also balance the learning with plenty of fun and fellowship: breakfast, coffee and fellowship each Sunday morning, occasional Sunday School at Hardee’s, monthly activities such as Sunday evening game nights or going out to eat, canoeing, camping, video game nights, our annual Christmas party and more. So whether you are local and can attend each week or find yourself back in town on occasion, we encourage you to stop by,

soak up God’s word and enjoy the fellowship that we share in our Sunday school class and at our activities. The College class leaders are Alan & Gena Elledge, Steve & Jessica Krick, and Benjamin & Kerianne Schnur. Topical Bible Studies Class The teachers, Clovis Hale and Dennis Homesley, teach topics in which class members have expressed interest, and include doctrinal topics and practical topics on Christian living. Class members are encouraged to actively participate and present their biblical perspectives on the discussion topics. Recent topics have included “Spiritual Growth,” “Regrets,” “Doctrine of God,” “Doctrine of the Holy Spirit,” “Gratitude,” “Encouragement,” and “Biblical Parenting.” A series on “Cults” began July 27, 2014. In September a series on “Sanctification,” based on Jim Berg's popular book Changed into His Image, will begin and last for several weeks. All who are interested in learning God's plan for transforming your life are encouraged to attend and should notify one of the teachers so that books may be ordered.

Ladies’ Class The Ladies’ Sunday School class is currently studying the Book of Malachi. Teacher Eva Koeper states, “When I started studying to prepare my lessons I thought it would be a simple quick eight to ten weeks covering of the prophecy, but we are now in our third week of the first chapter. There is so much that can be directly applied to the life of the Christian. We cannot just gloss over it and move on. As we move from one part of God’s conversation with His people to another, we discuss how we can apply it our hearts.” We have reading assignments in other parts of the Bible that will apply to the next Sunday’s lesson. For example, this week we were to read Hebrews 8 and 9 because (though we will be talking about the meaning of the sacrifices and incense and such this week) we will be coming to chapter two and the broken priestly Covenant very soon. As to the other question of reaching out: each Sunday someone takes the name of a person who is absent and agrees to call or email that person before the next class...unless we already know she is out of town. And I always email my class once a week about something that is coming up in class and I encourage those who were absent then.

Please take time to read the testimonies that follow from graduates and currently enrolled members of CBC who have decided to diligently study the Bible and its life applications. Pastor McLaughlin concludes the testimonies. Information for your personal enrollment is included in this article. I so enjoyed the concentrated OT and NT reading. The lesson time proved very refreshing and challenging. Coupled with Pastor's messages, I saw growth in my faith, and other aspects of my walk, I'd not experienced before. —Tyler Tibbetts I was given the opportunity to enroll as a student in Faith Bible Institute one month before I turned 16. Little did I know the Biblical principles Dr. Yates taught me would impact my life forever both as a woman and as a nurse. Faith Bible Institute taught me the importance and necessity of not only studying and examining each verse in the Bible, but also applying those principles to my life. During my teenage and young adult years, there were moments I was tempted to stray, but principles on purity and Christlikeness enabled me to cling to Christ rather than wander and make foolish decisions that I would regret. Principles regarding suffering and death have also empowered me to support and encourage my patients as they suffer and approach their moments to

enter eternity. Faith Bible Institute also allowed me to grow closer to my father and sisters through studying God’s Word together and discussing areas in our lives that needed to be changed. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a graduate of Faith Bible Institute. —Rebekah J. Delaney Faith Bible Institute (the other FBI) has been a tremen d o u s b en ef it to me. Especially as someone who was not saved until I was in my 30's, I did not have the benefit of receiving a good Bible education growing up. FBI has provided me with a very solid knowledge base and I absolutely recommend it to everyone. While there is a time and study commitment, the benefits are immense. —Ed Marshman I want to tell everyone what a great resource FBI is. Stacy and I have so many conversations about the class (we have to take it at different times). The material dovetails so well with the sermons and Sunday School! I can't think of a better way to spend my Tuesday nights. —Stephen Smith FBI has been life chang-

ing for me. I not only understand my Bible like I never have before, but I have a deeper understanding of who God is, and that absolutely fills me with joy. My faith has grown as well as my knowledge. I learn something new in every class. This past semester we studied the book of James, which I have always struggled to understand. Now I can honestly tell you it is one of my favorite books of the Bible. —Stacy Smith The opportunity to study the Bible so thoroughly has set in motion a new level of commitment and discipline with my personal Bible study. Also, this opportunity for hard work has provided a better understanding of who God is, His love for me, and built a closer relationship with God. A goal when I started was to more effectively use God's Word when sharing the gospel, and I have been able to do that. I am very thankful to confirm, yet again, one really can do more than they think they can. —Linda Jackson

To enroll in FBI please go to their website: www.fbiclass.com/ register. You will need the following information: School name – Calvary Huntsville #871. We meet on Tuesdays either at 8:30 a.m. or at 6:30 p.m. in Room B in Phase II.

To say that we have really enjoyed being a part of FBI would be an understatement! Not just the gaining of Biblical knowledge and principles but the practical application of them has been so helpful! For instance, when Jesus proclaims that “I am the light of the world” we never fully understood the depth of what was actually transpiring. Simply amazing! —Ray and Trish Bergstresser Faith Bible Institute has been a great experience for me, and it has helped me grow so much spiritually. Pastor Yates has been a very interesting and inspiring teacher. He makes things that seem boring come to life, and the things that you don’t understand, he explains in a way you can understand them. FBI has also been a great way to enjoy Christian fellowship. It is always refreshing to either start the day, or finish a long day of school or work studying God’s Word with other Christians. I would encourage anyone that wants to learn more about the Bible or our Creator to take this Bible class. You will never regret it! —Gloria Delaney Have you ever desired a better understanding of the ENTIRE Word of God? Would you like a worldclass opportunity to study the Word of God? Having conducted FBI in my church in Singapore, I experienced the merits of the study both in my family and in my church. Consequently, I have promoted

FBI everywhere I go for ten years. I was thrilled when Pastor McLaughlin launched the program at Calvary. I was even more thrilled when I could complete my final semester to graduate! There is a special kinship among FBI students and graduates literally all over the world. —Pat Delaney Though I have studied the Bible over 50 years and listened to great Bible preachers and teachers, and taught Sunday School classes, there were lots of areas that I had not studied in depth and some not at all. The FBI course is very thorough and comprehensive and has served to fill in the gaps of my Bible knowledge. It has been a great blessing to me to have had the opportunity to take the FBI course. —Clovis Hale When we signed up for FBI, we knew we'd be getting plenty of in-depth doctrinal teaching, but we never expected so much personal application of Bible truth! Pastor Yates frequently draws on his personal experiences and those of others he knows to illustrate godly principles we should live by, how to resist temptation, creating witnessing opportunities, etc. Our daily homework has encouraged us to study our Bible on a regular basis and in much more detail than before we started the classes. Studying for our tests and applying what we're learning has brought us closer to each other and to God. —Jim & Linda Mandras

Faith Bible Institute is an incredible, life changing journey. Daniel J. Boorstin, twelfth Librarian of the United States Congress wrote, "Education is learning what you didn't even know you didn't know." There is so much to learn about God and His Word and FBI is a great tool in the lifelong journey of learning. Studying the word chronologically with the OT and NT at the same time has been eye opening, especially Semester Six. In Class Six the prophecies of Ezekiel, Daniel, Zechariah, 1-3 John and Revelation came to life in what was happening in the current world news and we talked about it for months. The fellowship and unity around the Word we have is just a glimpse of what can only be imagined when we get to heaven. —Cindy Gallagher Several years ago I was looking for a comprehensive study of the Word of God that would give the student a chronological understanding of the Bible. When I reviewed Faith Bible Institute I knew this would be a resource that could benefit the most learned Bible students to those who were just saved. A remarkable 28 years in the making, makes FBI something I wish everyone at Calvary would take advantage of. I believe it has helped me in my correlation of Biblical truths as well as in the communication of those truths to others. —Pastor McLaughlin

44 teens & 14 Jr. Agers attended camp this summer. 7 teens went back for a 2nd week at the end of the summer. Suttles & Meisners were the sponsors for the groups. “Thank You” to those who prayed and helped the teens earn money for camp.

There are many important events that happen during the summer for our youth group, but none as important as our week at the Wilds. This year's trip to the Wilds was described by most as, “THE BEST WEEK EVER!” It was wonderful to hear our teens talk through the week about what the Lord was doing in their hearts. There was a sense of joy and excitement. The focus of the teens was becoming centralized again. We had the privilege of hearing Evangelist Jeremy Frazor. Jeremy is no stranger to our ministry. He was here in 2005 as the Teen Evangelist with the Pettit Team, and returned as our Special speaker for our Annual Spring Retreat in 2008. Jeremy has a unique way

of presenting the truth of God in a relevant way to reach the hearts of teens. There is no doubt that our teens’ faith has been strengthened through his ministry. Of course, one of the great joys of camp is also the fun that you can have, and we all had a lot of it! It was exciting to watch the teens as they played some wild and crazy games. We had a great time tubing together and had an intense game of gezeeball (not enough space to explain what this is, but it is fun!). The teens took great pleasure in seeing their youth pastor be in the dunking booth. Their youth pastor took great pleasure in the fact that no one could hit the target. That is, until Ms. Katie ran up and hit the target with her hand. We praise the Lord greatly for the ministry

of the Wilds and the atmosphere that it creates to help cultivate a passion for the Lord in the next generation. Thank you for giving to this ministry and for praying for us! Please feel free to ask us how we are doing with our decisions and keep us accountable. 11th & 12th Grade Sunday School We are very excited about this upcoming school year. We are going to be focusing on II Timothy and dealing with “Character in Crisis.” Many parents and grandparents are concerned about the future generations and rightfully so. We will attempt to stem the tide and help our students pursue a different course and develop godly character.

Staff this year has changed a little. Gena Elledge is back teaching 7th & 8th Grade Keyboarding; Deb Bolender will teach the 4th-6th Grade Physical Education, and Julie Wilson rotates off this year from Health class instructor. She will be back with us the following year. This September 24thth 26 , some of our teachers will attend the SACS Convention (Southern Association of Christian Schools) in Gatlinburg, TN. They are looking forward to the event, especially since this is the BIG tri-state convention that occurs every three years. One unusual fact is that this is the first year we have not enrolled any K-5 students. Mrs. Bergstresser will have four K-4 students in her class. Since we do not have any kindergartners, we will not have a K-5 Graduation next May. We do not have any 5th grade students in-house this year either. (A little side note, I will have

three grandchildren in CBA this year. YEA!) We have twenty-five CBA Faculty & Staff, for the 2014-2015 school year. Although, the GREAT thing about this year is that we have two new CBA Alumni who are teaching. Sarah Gregory will teach Algebra I and tutor the senior Advanced Math students, and Wes McLaughlin will teach 7th & 8th American Republic and 4th & 6th Grade Music. We are thrilled to have these two CBA Alumni back in the halls of CBA again. They graduated from CBA in 2010. Wes graduated this past May from BJU with a Business Administration Degree and a minor in History; Sarah graduated from Calhoun with an Associates Degree in Math and is working on her Bachelor’s Degree in Math from UAH. These two alumni were lifers at CBA, in that they began as K-4 students. WHAT A BLESSING TO HAVE THEM TEACHING NOW! These are our student

numbers for the 20142015 school year:  33 In-House Students (20 Families)  42 H.S. Students (19 Families, including 2 Associate H.S. Families who come in for classes and field trips but are under another H.S. Umbrella) We certainly are praying about the Lord bringing more students into CBA, whether it is new families who come into our church or some of our homeschoolers who decide to put their children in-house. This ministry began in 1992, and this will be our 22nd year. We are so grateful for the students who have come through CBA, and we look forward to this new year. Many thanks to those who have given to our teacher and student scholarship funds and have diligently prayed for our teachers and students! This is a ministry that reaps many dividends, and God will bless you for your sacrifice.
