WHAT IS THE BUSINESS START-UP GRANTS PROGRAM? Adelaide City Council has initiated a Business Start-up Grant to encourage new small, innovative and diverse businesses to take up underutilised and vacant buildings in the City. We are looking for ideas that re-use empty or underutilised buildings for either: •

Ground floor activation



Basement activation



Upper storey activation

If you are looking to start a new business in an underutilised or empty building in the City, you can apply to Adelaide City Council for grant funding of up to $30,000 to cover up to 50% of the cost to improve the building and start your business.

WHAT TYPES OF IMPROVEMENTS CAN I MAKE? Grants are available for building improvements. These can include: •

Costs associated with addressing the building code related requirements



Improving accessibility for all users



Internal fit-out

Improvements that have already commenced or completed prior to lodging the grant application



Work covered by other Adelaide City Council incentive schemes or grant programs (you will need to apply separately)

WHEN CAN I APPLY? The 2015/16 Business Start-up Grants Program opens on Monday 2 November 2015, and closes Friday 11 December 2015. To apply visit adelaidecitycouncil.com/businessgrants.

WHO CAN APPLY? Under the grant program, new businesses and commercial property owners looking to start a new business are eligible to apply for an Business Start-up Grant. We welcome property owners and new businesses to collaborate in putting forward an application. Consideration will be given to applications that best meet the program objectives. The program objectives include: •

New business that will add to the diversity of the street



Enhance the appeal of the street



Increase the footfall and patronage to the street



Assist the street to feel safer and more welcoming

Properties owned or managed by Adelaide City Council or a State or Federal Government agency are not eligible for funding. Residential property owners are not eligible for funding. Businesses that are successful in receiving funding will be referred to Enterprise Adelaide for assistance with developing marketing plans, financial plans, and ongoing training and mentoring, as well as case management assistance. Successful applicants should also attend specific training and workshops that cover business planning, marketing, lead generation and customer service.

Applications will open on Monday 2 November 2015 and close on Friday 11 December 2015.

Obtain two written quotes from licensed contractors for the proposed works.

Complete and submit the Business Start-up Grants application form with the required documentation (quotes for the work, business plan and photo of the existing building).

Applications received by Friday 11 December 2015 will be assessed. An on-site meeting may be required.

Note: You may need to contact the property owner to arrange access to the building.

Note: Council may contact you following receipt of your application to discuss the project or to request additional information.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application in writing by 24 December 2015. Successful applicants will be advised that their application has been approved subject to obtaining all required approvals and permissions, including landlord’s consent (if applicable).

Approved works commence and must be completed within a six-month period (unless otherwise agreed).

Upon completion of the work, notify Council to arrange a site inspection.

Pay the contractors in full for the completed works and present proof of payment to Council. Council will then reimburse you for the works as specified in the approval letter.

Note: This is a competitive grant process. Applications are assessed against criteria and there is no guarantee you will be allocated a grant.

Adelaide City Council reserves the right to award grant funding at its discretion based on the merits of individual applications.
