New Strategies in Financial Planning and Budget Modeling

This interactive class is designed to demonstrate the new and expanded capabilities of Excel and discuss the importance of effectively communicating financial forecasts and scenarios to governing bodies. Attendees will receive a financial model to work through in class, allowing for a hands-on experience and scenario analysis and practical application of the course concepts. Course Topics • The interrelated aspects of financial planning, cost of service and rate modeling • Big data capabilities of new Microsoft Excel add-ins that allow manipulation and analysis of millions of rows of data • Case studies from Keys Energy and CPS Energy to demonstrate and discuss different ways to utilize financial planning and budget models • Scenario building and analysis, based on attendee input, to plan capital spending, rates and debt issuances, though use of a dynamic modeling environment Who Should Attend This course is designed for public utility accounting and finance personnel—at utilities large and small—including: chief financial officers, executive and management-level employees involved in finance, accounting, strategic pricing, as well as rate analysts from large and small public utilities.

Distributed Generation: Cost of Service and Rate Design

Utilities are moving toward more accurate rate structures to recover costs from customerinstalled distributed energy resources (DER). Due to lack of metering information, many electric rate structures had little relationship to fixed- and variable-cost recovery from customers, which caused revenue stability and cross-subsidization issues on future DER installations. Customers often provide energy back to the grid, and utilities pay for the excess generation at a rate based on the utilities’ rates or on the avoided cost or value of solar. This seminar will cover the methods used to value distributed energy resources and the cost impacts on power supply, transmission, and distribution. Learn what cost of service information should be used to value customer solar and how to determine rates under net metering, net billing, and buy-all, sell-all arrangements. Discover the rate changes you should consider with or without automatic meter reading. Who Should Attend This seminar is ideal for general managers, policymakers, finance and accounting personnel, and rate analysts. Instructor: Mark Beauchamp, CPA, CMA,

MBA, President, Utility Financial Solutions, Holland, Mich.

What to Bring To participate fully in this course, attendees are required to bring a laptop with Microsoft Excel. Instructors: Max Bernt, Analyst, NewGen

Adjourn

San Antonio

ATTRACTIONS San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the United States, and ranked among top cities to visit. It’s a community of some of the kindest people you’ll ever meet. With many military bases and businesses in town, locals are an eclectic mix. There is no shortage of fabulous attractions — the Alamo, the River Walk, missions, Tower of the Americas, SeaWorld, the new Pearl Brewery, and Tobin’s Performing Arts Center.

SHOPPING The Shops at La Cantera are hard to beat for variety and name brand stores. The Pearl Brewery offers unique gifts and houses some of the city’s best stores, restaurants, and bars. Hop on a river boat from here to the Saturday morning farmer’s market for local produce and artisan-crafted edibles like pestos from Humble House.

DINING You’ll taste the world in San Antonio. Beyond Tex-Mex are German bakeries, Mexican cantinas, French bistros, and Italian trattorias. Flour from age-old European millstones becomes a morning crepes or an afternoon tortilla. Hill Country wines prove a silky foil to smoky chipotle. Acclaimed chefs bring their world-class training to the blossoming culinary landscape.
